Kos: Conservatives like to shoot cops
posted at 1:24 pm on April 5, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
The boss has noted the tragedy in Pittsburgh, where a lone gunman killed three police officers trying their best to defend their community:
A gunman wearing a bulletproof vest and “lying in wait” opened fire on officers responding to a domestic disturbance call Saturday, killing three of them and turning a quiet Pittsburgh street into a battlefield, police said.
Police Chief Nate Harper said the motive for the shooting isn’t clear, but friends said the gunman recently had been upset about losing his job and feared the Obama administration was poised to ban guns. …
The three slain officers were Eric Kelly, 41, Stephen Mayhle, 29, and Paul Sciullo III, 37. Kelly had been on the force for 14 years, Mayhle and Sciullo for two years each. Another officer, Timothy McManaway, was shot in the hand and a fifth broke his leg on a fence.
Today is Palm Sunday, and I’d ask Hot Air readers to keep these men and their families in your prayers.
Unfortunately, some sick people will use this tragedy for their political hobby horses. We’d like to think that only the idiots at the fringes would do so, but as my decidedly liberal and decidedly rational friend Tommy Christopher found out, that’s not the case. Markos Moulitsas twittered his list to blame the shooting on the conservative movement, and apparently joke about the murders:

I’ll let Tommy pick it up from here:
Dana Houle is a Daily Kos frontpager, not some tinfoil diarist, and Markos is the public face of the liberal blogosphere. Granted, his influence isn’t what it used to be, but he is still the most recognizable, the most closely-associated liberal blogger out there.
When I saw his re-Tweet, I was stunned, and I hadn’t even heard about the Pittsburgh shooting yet. I thought he was talking about the shooting in Binghamton. When I looked back at Houle’s Tweet, and I found the story of the three policemen who were killed yesterday, I could not believe my eyes. As you can see, I tried to get Markos to explain his re-Tweet, unable to believe that these two would be joking about this at all, let alone hours after the tragedy. …
Maybe there’s something wrong with me, but I think this is shameful. This is the kind of thing I would probably delete at Political Machine. I don’t even see the humor in it, even setting aside the heartless ghoulishness involved.
Be sure to read the rest of Tommy’s piece, because he’ll need the support after taking on Kos. He thinks eight years of “mortal kombat”, as Tommy puts it, has momentarily deranged Markos. I’m not so sure that it’s momentary.
People on both sides like to take non-political tragedies and manipulate them for their own purposes. The Binghamton shooting occurred just before we went on the air Friday, and I remarked that both sides tried to use the Virginia Tech shooting to their advantage, and that I expected something similar from Binghamton. Some people refuse to acknowledge that lunatics do lunatic things, and it has nothing to do with the honestly-held policy beliefs of millions of Americans. Those who would use such horrifying tragedies to smear their political opponents are completely unworthy of engagement, and utterly despicable to boot, regardless of which side they’re on.
Update: Jim Treacher has another screen cap for posterity, just in case Markos tries burying this.
Update II: Don’t miss Caleb Howe’s take on this, either.

What did they have to say about the 4 cops killed in Oakland? Let me guess.

Don’t know who is more infantile, Kos or Obama. Tough choice.
tarpon on April 5, 2009 at 1:29 PM
This is totally unfair of Kos.
It’s not like you can go to conservative blogs and find commenters saying things like “the only good leftist is a dead leftist.”
Well, except for this site. Yesterday, in this thread:

But really, that’s the exception, right guys?

Oakland police shootings anyone? How about the G-20 rioters?
Using the Moulitsas standard, I can say “apparently the left thinks the revolution is at hand and they can engage in violence at anytime like in Oakland or at the economic summit.”
No wonder he’s a fan of Olbermann’s.
[don'tcha love the "apparently" weasel word?]

Yes, by all means, compare a commenter to Kos himself. Keep reaching, e-pirate.

Huh-wha…? Kos? A hate-monger? Shut. UP!
Anyone surprised by this hasn’t been paying attention.

When you are as delusional as the Kos kids, what exactly do you expct? They don’t see anything, they don’t do their home work and they sure do not care about the families of anyone in this type of situation.
It is wrong that the cops lost their lives… lets hope that the Kos Kids grow up, and see the err of their ways. But I doubt it.

You’re right, it is different.
Kos said “Conservatives like to kills cops”
But I posted an example of a conservative wanting to kill democrats, which is a much larger percentage of the US population.
Kos was wrong in who he assumed conservatives want to kill?
So, point to you, I guess?

Hey E-Pirate,
You don’t really want to go cherry-picking from the COMMENTS do you? Good grief buddy, get a clue.

There is no fairness, honor, sanity, or scruples on the left. Every day they take our civilized society to new lows and blame it on the good people. We should all learn it and embrace it. They will never go away. Now fight on!
BetseyRoss on April 5, 2009 at 1:37 PM
God bless these men’s families.
We already know that most criminals vote Democrat, as Democrat rule means fewer cops, Democrat judges, and thus easier sentences if you get convicted at all. I imagine that if someone were politically incorrect enough to break down cop killers by race and political affiliation we’d see some very interesting numbers.
Will Markos be asked about this next time he’s on some ‘respectable’ news programme?

I told him, that I spent the last 8 years hearing hate and vitriol spewing from many mouths on the left in the direction of conservatives and the Christian right in general. I grew up with many very fine, loving, (give you the shirt of your back) people. When the same mouths that were spewing hatred at these people for years want me get get on board with their version of a new world, you’ll have to forgive me if I cannot .
“Sorry, Ive been listening to your for 8 years, I know who YOU are and Ill pass!”

I read on KOS last week someone bragging about sabotaging Tedisco campaign by volunteering for the campaign. These are people who openly brag about their lying and subterfuge, they stand for nothing. That they would use the tragedy of this shooting for political gains shows they can and will seek new lows. How sad they use their time in power to bring new lows to the political landscape and revel in the tragedy of slain police officers.
msmveritas on April 5, 2009 at 1:49 PM
Liberals like to kill cops, burn down houses, murder babies, and release murderers from jail. In fact, President Obama personally endorses a cop killer.
If liberals aren’t spitting on soldiers, they are worshipping the newest cause de celeb murderer on death row.

Yep. Not much for him to do now he’s got his man into power. Conservatives know what a thankless task it is trying to defend your man when he becomes unpopular, and we’ve already seen how quickly the Obama activists have gotten bored.
EnglishMike on April 5, 2009 at 1:55 PM
If anyone thinks that conservatives ( republicans ) like to kill cops I suggest that you point out places like Philly, Detroit, Washington D.C. N.O. Flint, Gary, NYC, L.A. and point out that those places all have several things in common ….they are all democrat strong holds ….. full of obama’s hard core base…… and most of those cities typically make the top ten list of most murderous American cities. Then if your feeling really mean you can throw in that the group that voted for obama at close to 100 % has committed 52.2 % of all murders in this country since 1975 at least that is according to the Bureau of Justice web site http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/homicide/race.htm…then you can listen to them call you a racist for pointing out facts
Aggie95 on April 5, 2009 at 1:56 PM
e-pirate just got smacked down big time.
With all of this craziness going on recently, I’m beginning to suspect the true motives behind these actions. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely feel for the families and am praying for those left behind, but I am beginning to question if some of these people really are who they say they are.
I mean on CNN yesterday (they had it on at Max & Erma’s) they had a 4 person panel talking about the “Upsurge in Gun Violence” simply because of 2 lunatics that just happened to become crazy within the same week.

You can’t really be this stupid, and you can’t really expect people who come here to be that stupid.
You want to talk about @ssholes who want the adherents to a political ideology to die and think you can only find an example here?
KOS and HuffPo have had to shut down comments when they post about a conservative who is dying or has died. Bill Maher openly wished on his TV program that Dick Cheney had been assassinated.
And plenty of Lefties have talked about wishing conservatives dead, some even talked about taking our rights away.
But here you point to one lone person and pretend we’re the true evil.
If you want to be this stupid, please don’t bring it here.

But when their whole purpose for years was to bash Bush/Chaney, and all conservatives in general, what have they got left? They can’t sit there and say anything negative against this administration, they’re the ones partially to blame for putting him there. That, and adolescent girls. And ACORN.
scalleywag on April 5, 2009 at 2:06 PM
This is very sad, and Conservatives don’t like to shoot cops. There are people in both sides that snap. Doesn’t mean that all Conservative nor Democrats like to shoot cops. It is a good way of brain washing the weak minded who will never stand up and fight for themselves. What happened to all of the cops, Oakland as well which is only 3 1/2 hour drive from my town. I keep all in my prayers that feel in the hands of radical’s that took innocent human lives. Just watch the radical’s will more than likely celebrate the man in Pa. that did this. They will call him a hero. Those in Oakland that hailed that punk as a hero should have been shot by the police for encouraging violence against policemen. They do that in other Countries, they don’t put up with minds like that. The ones that praise such violent acts are the ones that rake the welfare in and live off of us. They are nothing but a useless waste in our Society. Now when cops arrest gang bangers the punks tell the cops that they will have their jobs and have their homes. Sadly they more than likely will. This is what Obingo wants is a thuggery Country ran by not only Socialism, but Union thugs and street thugs. With the will of God I don’t think we The Patriots will let them get by with this. Fight People Fight! Have a wonderful Palm Sunday.

I was living in the bay area when some big gangbanger, Felix Mitchell, was killed in prison. They had an 8 mile long funeral procession through Oakland. An Oakland cop had bought some sports car, riddled with bullet holes, at a police auction in which some other gangbanger had met his demise. He and some other cops rode it in the procession. The usual suspects complained they were disrespectful, but I thought it was hilarious.

Three officers are ambushed and killed by a nut job and KOS makes jokes about it. Another lefty comes on here and defends KOS, or rationalizes it because another nut said he hated democrats. What are we coming to as a country?
After 35 years as a police officer, I find nothing funny about 3 lives snuffed out while they were simply doing their job, and find it equally hard to place his political beliefs at blame for his actions. Is there any doubt he was mentally ill? Being a conservative or a liberal does not make you mentally ill.
Almost every police officer I have known over 35 years is conservative in his or her beliefs. Does that make them evil in liberals eyes? I know and have worked with a lot of liberals who appreciated police officers and respected the job that they do. Does that make them bad liberals?
I love to read this site because most of the folks here express the same views that I have, and make very good arguments against the few folks who come here to express other views. But when people die, back off folks. There is nothing here to joke about or to politicize. It is a nut job who took three lives, nothing more, nothing less.

These individuals face deadly risks on a regular basis, all in the effort to keep our communities safe. They are true heroes, and I hope the families of the lost officers can find some comfort in knowing that millions of Americans are deeply grateful for the sacrifices made by their loved ones. May God bless and protect the souls of the dead officers, and may He give solace to those who grieve for them.
