Video: Schultz dishes on his sponsors

posted at 11:02 am on April 4, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

MS-NBC’s marketing group may want to have a word with their new show host, Ed Schultz. It’s hard to keep advertisers paying for a show when the star keeps talking about how they’re going broke and the product itself will flop. Greg Hengler at Town Hall caught this moment on YouTube:

I got a lot of e-mail when MS-NBC announced its deal with Ed Schultz, wondering how he got a TV gig, but it was really not that big of a story.  Successful libtalkers are pretty rare — which is why the Left wants the Fairness Doctrine returned.  It’s basically a subsidy for libtalkers who can’t compete.  Schultz has hit the top of that segment, though, showing significant commercial success.  He’s probably the most successful libtalker in the business, and it makes sense for a TV network deliberately and explicitly positioning themselves as the Progressive Channel to eventually give him his shot.

He’s not exactly an intellectual heavyweight, though, as his debate with Michael Medved proved.  His new TV show will simply display that to a larger audience … or maybe not so much larger.  It is MS-NBC, after all.

Rush actually has the same dilemma with the GM total confidence plan.

AbaddonsReign on April 4, 2009 at 11:14 AM

I’ll enjoy immensely his laughable ratings as he is crushed by Bret Baier.

gsherin on April 4, 2009 at 11:14 AM

Why is it that the only picture I ever see of this guy is him flailing his right hand around like he’s riding a bull or something?

The picture says it’s from March 30, 2009, well I know I’ve seen a picture that looks almost exactly like that one before March 30th.

Anyhow , he’s right about the volt , it will be too expensive even with 4 dollar a gallon.

This is the guy! This is the same party hack who claims to be for the working guy. Whenever asked or emailed about Illegal Aliens taking Americans jobs or the government allowing the labor market to be flooded with cheap Illegal Alien labor, you get the same silence as you get from Tom Harkin at a Hilda Solis confirmation hearing…

RealDemocrat on April 4, 2009 at 11:19 AM

I hope he has learned to remove his earpiece.

becki51758 on April 4, 2009 at 11:21 AM

Wait, the Volt is going to be $40,000? I didn’t even know that, I thought it was going to be around $22,000 and compete with the midsize sedans. But 40 freakin’ K? GM deserves to fail, who makes these idiotic decisions?

I suppose the Volt will be fine now though, considering its production will be subsidized by the taxpayers now. From Amtrak to GMtrak.

Daemonocracy on April 4, 2009 at 11:22 AM

The Volt has to be great, the Illegal Aliens will be assembling it here in the states…

RealDemocrat on April 4, 2009 at 11:24 AM

RealDemocrat on April 4, 2009 at 11:49 AM

Well if the Volt won’t make a dime.

And if the volt will cost $40k to buy.

Then why exactly is GM making this car? Ego?

The guy is probably a dunce but even a broken clock is right twice a day…

The Caliph Hussein al-chicago and his Merry Marxist Marching Society of Congresstitutes do not worry about the nomenklatura. They only see huge Voting Blocs and their Community Organizers Comrade Commissars telling the proles what to think, when to think and when to

His potential audience–the hosts and production crews for Hardball, Olberman’s Show, and Maddow’s show–will be busy with their own shows. Beyond that, who’d want this guy in the background at the dinner hour? On the plus side, Andrea Mitchell might tune in.

Has anyone noticed that little plugging there is on Morning Joe for MSNBC’s evening programming? There’s a ton of commercial advertising, but there’s no specific mention of Olberman and Maddow. Once, in a blue moon, Matthews turns up on the show. They chat up Andrea Mitchell’s show and David Gregory’s Meet the Press. But you’d think Olberman and Maddow were on a different network. And I suspect that Schultz will get the same reception.

thmcbb on April 4, 2009 at 1:12 PM

Ed Schultz? Never heard of him.

ddrintn on April 4, 2009 at 1:17 PM

I think what he said in the commercial was a LOT worse than what he said on his show.

The Chevy Volt gets “up to 40 miles per charge”? And GM PAID him to say that! What the Hell were they thinking?

There are plenty of people who can pay $40,000 for a car, even if it’s just as a moonbat status symbol. But there are only a very tiny handuful of idiots who’d pay $40,000 for a GOLF CART!

logis on April 4, 2009 at 1:19 PM

Not much business sense, ragging on his network’s advertisers. That said, have to agree with him. And why is GM making this POS? Because our Green Overlords want them to. When it doesn’t sell, and they lose money on it, they’ll be forced to sell less of the cars people do want, that actually make money. Gubmint run corporations!

What is “Dishing”?

Isn’t it “dissing”….meaning to disrespect someone or something?

MidnightRambler on April 4, 2009 at 1:36 PM

The Volt will be obsolete by the time it makes it to market. Well, for that matter, all current hybrid cars will be too, effectively making them worthless because of this.

I imagine that buying a Volt in 2010 or any hybrid car today will be an exercise in economic futility/waste, because without the new quick charge battery packs no one should consider buying one. I suspect this is one of the reasons why the hybrid car market has completely tanked (asides from the fact that they are expensive to buy, an inefficient use of motive power, and over the long term are expensive to operate.)

I’ll give credit to Schultz only in that he will perhaps have prevented one, perhaps two persons from buying a hybrid or electric vehicle.

Schwarze Tulpe on April 4, 2009 at 1:46 PM

What’s much better is when Sean Hannity sucks up to his sponsor, GM. On a day they nearly went bankrupt, he told us how great they were (because he too, was paid to).

Criticize Ed for whatever you want, but what do we care if he knocks one of his sponsors? That’s his problem, not ours.

I wish more talk hosts would do stuff like that.

Respectfully, no posts hit the mark. GM will be forced to make the Volt, and price controls will keep it at $6,000.

gooddad on April 4, 2009 at 5:43 PM

Well, if you want to get picky, you’re still missing the mark. There’s no problem at all with giving everyone in America government-subsidized golf carts. I might get one myself – who knows if I might find some kind of use for it.

The PROBLEM is that anyone who (foolishly) manages to make cars or any other products at a profit will be taxed to pay for that subsidy.

logis on April 4, 2009 at 7:09 PM

I agree with him on the Volt … it’s not going to make a dime. Not a dime.

Figure in the R&D on the battery and the chassis design. Figure in that … that must be A LOT of money because they are putting it out now when it only goes 40 miles on a charge. So someone decided the R&D had become a financial Vietnam and opted for “peace with honor” instead of throwing more R&D into finding a way to increase this … very sorry … 40 mile range.

40 miles gets you NO WHERE unless you live in an urban area. Oh – but – Obama, who now runs GM … well to him – there are ONLY urban areas!

Pfft!

So how long till the Congressmen and Senators start naming car models after themselves?
For fun go ahead and name them!

DSchoen on April 5, 2009 at 6:40 PM

Should be interesting. You guys can have him. Those of us who know him might miss a bit though. He is quite good at providing news in the Fargo / Moorhead area. Let me see, what is more news worthy. Shooting his dog, shooting off his mouth and again being thrown out of a bar for misbehaving, or is it him being arrested again for punching out his wife. Who knows, could be any or all.

You all who want to watch big eddied (think its big for his mouth becasue it certainly is not his brain)have fun.

Oh, did I mention that 5 years ago he was operating as a conservative? Guess I didn’t, but those who will end up watching this clown will eventually figure it out that he is simply someone craving attention and as he totally failed being on the right he now has re-marketed himself as a lefty. Its all show anyway so most probably won’t care as they will now get some red meat on the left.
