Obama’s trip shows he excels … at caving

posted at 10:22 am on April 4, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

No one will accuse Jackson Diehl of being a right-wing neocon, but even from his center-left perspective, the Washington Post columnist recognizes disaster when he sees it.  After watching Barack Obama abdicate all responsibility for Porkulus to Nancy Pelosi, Diehl wondered whether Obama was tough enough for the presidency.  Obama’s Grand Tour of Europe leaves Diehl more convinced that Obama is a weak sister, unable to stand up for America’s interests:

Barack Obama has proved in the past few days that he can work smoothly and productively with a wide range of foreign leaders — provided that he allows them to set the agenda. …

What’s striking about Obama’s diplomacy, however, has been his willingness to embrace the priorities of European governments, Russia and China while playing down — or setting aside altogether — principal American concerns.

As U.S. officials readily acknowledge, strategic arms control is of much greater interest to Russia — whose nuclear arsenal is rapidly deteriorating — than it is to the United States. From Washington’s perspective, stopping Iran’s nuclear program is far more urgent than agreeing on the next incremental reduction in Cold War warheads. Yet Obama essentially consented in his first summit with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to devote the next four months of U.S.-Russian relations to an intensive effort to complete a new START treaty. No such cooperation on Iran is on the horizon. “I don’t think we want to suggest that somehow . . . there’s agreement about how to proceed,” one U.S. briefer conceded.

The G-20 and NATO summits followed a similar pattern. Even before Obama traveled to Europe, his administration surrendered on the biggest U.S. priorities — which were prompting Germany and other Western European countries to boost domestic spending and dispatch more troops and trainers to Afghanistan. With stimulus off the table, the economic summit centered on the platform of Germany and France — expanding government regulation — and on areas of general agreement, such as the provision of fresh funding for the IMF.

That sounds excellent!  We can work on retreat from Russia — which, by the way, still hasn’t removed its troops from Georgia as promised — in return for Russia selling arms to Iran.  We get to trade a lack of support for the NATO mission in Afghanistan with our promise to give the IMF a trillion dollars.

As Diehl notes, Obama’s “pliability” did not go unnoticed.  Angela Merkel refused to consider Obama’s plan of government stimulus spending (which in this case was a smart choice anyway).  Nicolas Sarkozy insisted on getting his statist expansion, and got it.  Very little occurred in terms of negotiations, but it seems Europe had no trouble with ultimatums.

This isn’t “smart power.”  It’s mindless, unilateral surrender.  That seems to be Obama’s specialty at home and abroad.

Diehl tries to soften his analysis at the end by suggesting that surrender just might help America gain more respect from Russia and its allies.  I’d like to see one historical instance where unilateral surrender ever made a nation stronger and more respected.

Barak Obama Feb 29 2008

Second, I will cut tens of billions of dollars in wasteful spending.

I will cut investments in unproven missile defense systems.
I will not weaponize space.
I will slow our development of future combat systems.
And I will institute an independent “Defense Priorities Board” to ensure that the Quadrennial Defense Review is not used to justify unnecessary spending.
Third, I will set a goal of a world without nuclear weapons. To seek that goal, I will not develop new nuclear weapons; I will seek a global ban on the production of fissile material; and I will negotiate with Russia to take our ICBMs off hair-trigger alert, and to achieve deep cuts in our nuclear arsenals.

Once Russia is granted the place it craves as a nuclear negotiating partner of the United States, the prickly regime may prove more willing to toughen sanctions on Iran [etc]

Is the new president shrewd and pragmatic about using his power at home and abroad — or too passive, even weak? That’s a question worth weighing as he heads back to Washington.

I am not aware of any significant event in history where obsequious bowing and scraping produced anything but contempt, false advantage, and eventual adventurism against US interests. This is not a question that needs weighing; it has already been proved to be both dangerous and deadly.

So here we go again, having learned nothing from history.

TOTUS goes and even mocks US the American People over in Europe. Then he lifts travel band to Cuba. Isn’t that just wonderful! /sarc He is making friends with Countries that we fought in to save Europe. Taiwan and Israel is very nervous and can’t blame them. He is kissing butt to Countries that created Nazi’s who killed millions of innocent people, Countries that enslave their own people. He goes to Europe when we are having a crisis. Oh, he is living nicely while so many American’s don’t know where they will sleep, eat work. The people that lost their jobs will have trouble keeping their homes, paying bills and buying food. For the American’s that are single and go to get help like food stamps, forget it. Especially if you don’t have children. A friend of mine who is white, and not trying to bash other races, but if you are white and have no children. In Ca. Welfare will give you 40.00 a month for food! That is what my friend has to look forward to. What about essentials like toilet paper, shampoo and essentials that a human needs as well? Think TOTUS cares? Don’t even think he does because he doesn’t. Our Country did so much of Europe and most of the Countries never even paid us back. Now Nato is going back on an agreement that they made. Liars just like TOTUS.

rockbend on April 4, 2009 at 11:54 AM

I think people are missing the boat. The strategy is to get these folks on board the Obama bus and then go for the gold. You want the World cheering section on your side. He is using the power of positive pressure to get the results or better results than power posturing. It is a variation of talk softly but carry a big stick. The World knows he has a big stick he doesn’t have to wave it. Fire the CEO and replace the Board of Directors of a once prestigious free enterprise, “What is good for General Motors is good for America”, is certainly a bold move and shows he can wield power to reach his goal domestic and probably international. Don’t under estimate what is going on or mistake it for the 1930’s appeasement strategy of Chamberlain. He knows the tools at his disposal or his handlers do and they will leverage them to the maximum as time marches on. The Republicans and Capitalist have had the butts kicked and are whining about what? He touched the Queen, DVD’s to the Prime Minister yes and they took the gifts and blessed him.

We are organizing a tea party in our largest city; organizing our strategy to expose Senators Tester and Baucus to fellow Montanans, and organizing methods (such as email campaigns) to educate our community in the importance of following politics closely. Far too many Montanans go about their daily lives with a simple trust that our politicians won’t dare harm us. Far too many Montanans know little or nothing about politics. Myself, and other volunteers are about to change that dynamic.

We are the opposition army…

TOTUS did compliment America today and even said he was proud of his country.

I guess he heard he had pissed off a ton of Americans.

Why does he never sound like he means it when he says things like that?

Whew! I was worried. Of course I know you and I knew it was sarcasm. No problem tho.

Obama was only trying to appease those who were pissed overe the American being arrogant comment. I dont think it will work because like you said…it was obvious he didnt mean it.

Now this is what I’m talking about. We are doing the same in Nevada. It is imperative that we rid this country of the bane of Harry Reid.

I do know the community here at HotAir. It was a great day when I got to register to post after months of lurking. I have also been very aware of you, since your name and your posts are memorable.

You owe me no explanation of your bona fides.

Our wet noodle POTUS is preparing us for the ass rape of the century.

He’s like the guy who’s wife caught him telling his girlfriend on the phone how much he hated his wife. When he is confronted he tells her that she’s crazy that’s not what he said. He was telling that skank how much he loves his wife. And the sad thing is over 1/2 of Americans will accept that story.

Wow, looks like getalife is sleeping in this morning. What will its programmers feed it to spin this one with?

Something like this:

“Obama and Michelle have taken the world by storm! Didn’t she look fabulous in her Gap prom dress? I love how she paired it with the argyle sweater. She’s so Jackie! Nobody since Scarlett O’Hara has been able to wear their draperies with such style and elegance! It was a complete triumph! The world loves us again! So what if Obama achieved none of his objectives? What’s important is that the media liked Michelle’s outfits!”
