Obamateurism of the Day
posted at 8:05 am on April 3, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
We covered this yesterday when it happened, but in my estimation, the worst amateur moment thus far in the Obama presidency came when the President of the United States executed a bow to a monarch so deep that he literally had to take a step back to balance himself. Not just any monarch, either, but one of the most repressive among those nations friendly to the US. Interestingly, this came just after Barack Obama met with another monarch, and the contrast between Barack Obama’s show of respect is striking. I put together this video to demonstrate it:
People criticized George Bush for holding hands with the Saudi king, but holding hands does not signify submission to another’s authority, and certainly not in the manner that Obama’s bow does here. Holding hands is a sign of friendship. And for those who believe that a bow is another sign of friendship, note that Obama didn’t execute a bow like this for the Queen of the UK, and the Saudi monarch doesn’t bother to reciprocate, either.
So what’s the protocol for heads of state? Anderson Cooper hinted at it in his coverage of Obama’s meeting with the British monarch:
When President and Mrs. Obama met the Queen tonight, there was a handshake, and both the President and the Queen both nodded respectfully to each other.
Was it a bow? Not quite. It was more of a, “I know you are a head of state and so am I. We are both heads of state together and this is what heads of state do when they meet other heads of state.” In other words they bow to each other without actually bowing.
Well, that certainly went out the door, didn’t it? And I’m certain that Obama’s fans will try to rationalize this, but my good friend Scott Johnson at Power Line notes that the DU had already put together a defense of Michelle Obama if she didn’t curtsy when meeting the Queen:
In fact, protocol dictates that she not do so.
Angier Biddle Duke, President Kennedy’s Chief of Protocol told this very poignant story…
Before the Kennedy’s first state visit to England, Jacqueline Kennedy asked Duke whether she should curtsy to the Queen. He told her no because she was the wife of the head of state and heads of state and their wives do not go around bowing and curtsying to one another.
Three years later, after her husband’s funeral, Mrs. Kennedy received guests in the White House family quarters. When Prince Philip greeted her, she curtsied to him. Duke was surprised because Mrs. Kennedy was a stickler for protocol and had a steel trap memory for such things. Noting his surprise, Mrs. Kennedy whispered to him:
“Angie, I’m no longer the wife of a head of state.”
Duke said he immediately left the room and wept.
So, don’t be surprised if Mrs. Obama does not curtsy to the Queen. Also don’t be surprised if she gets jumped all over for it – but she’ll be doing – or not doing – exactly what she’s supposed to.
Indeed. And President Obama shouldn’t have bowed to the Saudi monarch, either. No American President should ever make such an obsequious display to any monarch — ever.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Disgraceful, disgusting, nauseating!

Sad, so very sad day for the (former) greatest nation on earth.

No American should bow — ever.
In my Aikido dojo we all bow to each other as a sign of mutual respect, but I would never bow to any king, emperor, potentate, or what have you. I am an American citizen, the equal of any other human being, no matter the circumstance of their birth.

Alexander’s Macedonia soldiers refused to perform proskynesis to him, even after he had conquered half the known world…
Popillus Laenas (a citizen of the Roman Republic when it was the sole world super power and deputized ambassador of the Republic) did not bow when he met King Antiochus of Syria. The King had invaded Egypt, and it was Popillus’ job to stop the hostilities. He handed the King the Roman Senate’s ultimatum. When the King asked for time to contemplate a response. Ol’ Popillus took his staff and drew a circle in the ground around the King and said, “Before you step out of this circle, give me your response that I shall bear back to the Senate.” The king submitted to ultimatum.
If you are the sole superpower, act like it.

Jesse Owens narrates this 5 minute film as the American Flag is not dipped at the 1936 Berlin Olympics opening ceremonies.
Liberals use to take great pride in this little piece of history. The irony between the Jesse Owens Olympic story juxtaposed against this President’s bow to tyranny is illustrative of how far the Left has fallen.
(Hey trolls! Bet you don’t even know who Jesse Owens is, do you?)

Yes, it’s a conspiracy theory that Obama is really Muslim.
I can shrug off the Indonesian madrassa that he attended as Barry Soetero.
I can ignore the Reverend Wright and his ties to the Nation of Islam.
I can even laugh off the goof when Obama talked about his “Muslim faith” to Stephanopolous.
But this just brings my suspension of disbelief crashing down. Obama bowed to his King. He bowed low, really low. This mistake of protocol revealed Obama’s true interior, and that interior soul is Muslim.
I think we’ll see more indications as time goes on. And I pray we’re worth saving by a merciful God.

I don’t think so. It’s pretty clear to me that he was anxious to submit himself – and by extension, us – to this man.

Islam is a phony, made-up religion (death cult) conceived in the warped mind of a murdering pedophile and extortionist and foisted upon weak-minded people. It is designed to keep them bitter and angry and locked in the dark ages.
A soul, as given to man by a just and true God, is the property of God and cannot be “Muslim”. Muslims have souls, but keep them buried under camel dung and sand fleas.

Haunches on April 3, 2009 at 10:27 AM
It’s a major gaffe. Of course you can’t find the story in the US MSM.
The Saudi king is acknowledged as the spiritual leader of Sunni muslims, a point sharpened by the official Saudi endorsement of Wahabbism. Never mind the Saudi institutional support for terrorism.
To have our President bow before royalty of any country, before the leader of most of the world’s muslims and a terrorist sponsor is shocking.
It will serve to further encourage the Islamicist bastards that they will succeed in defeating the USA as they remake their Caliphate.
Greg Toombs on April 3, 2009 at 10:29 AM
I can tell you how people can look at it and think that it is not a big deal…
First, this can be interpreted as a sign of respect and not submission by some. In doing this, I believe he believes that he is opening the doors to a better relationship in being humble.
My personal problem with this is the fact that showing respect also requires that you maintain dignity for yourself and in this case the country that you represent. Also, therein a consistency issue exists as he did not show the same “respect” to the Queen (as far as I know).
Second, perhaps he is not so misguided. “Keep your friends close; keep your enemies closer” mentality? Or rather, “I am strong…you know that I am strong; but, I choose to show respect.”
Maybe he is hoping this will soften the heart…or maybe he dropped something…
My opinion: If it was a bow, it seems ill-advised to put diplomatically. :-)

Obama will likely insure conservative American leadership for decades to come. Every few generations people must learn first hand the Jim Jones lesson of enchantment with snake oil salesmen.
Obama is all about elevating flunkies the wrong way. It will prove to only prolong their road to advancement. The government dole is not the answer, but the problem. It will take a conservative to break the cycle of dependency and failure for the welfare masses.

“President Obama was not bowing! He was actually challenging the Saudi King to a full rut, (ala two stags going at it during mating season). Because the Saudi King refused to accept the president’s challenge to rut, President Obama clearly established himself as the dominant male. Obama really needs to get his protocol office staffed. I kind of think that he thinks he’s making some kind of mending gesture to the muslims of the world which if that is his intention and taken with his recent moves of soft peddling the WoT, Gitmo, etc. .. we’re toast.
I think it went beyond criticizism Ed, I think it became a mild version of BSD as opposed to full-blown BDS. And in my opinion it was taken to a level of juvenile behavior. What President Bush did was in his nature to offer his hand to steady an elderly Head of State who was visiting him as he walked down the unfamiliar path. It was nothing more than that, and I do the same thing for elderly people that I don’t even know when I see they need some assistance. Bush is a caring and compassionate man and I think it speaks very ill of our country and especially of our party with he is criticized for his compassion.

What rbj wrote needs to be repeated over and over-
Other than extremely limited situations, such as bowing as a sign of MUTUAL respect or a performer or athlete bowing to an audience,
No American should bow or curtsy — ever. I am an American citizen, the equal of any other human being, no matter the circumstance of his or her position. I will never bow or curtsy to any king, emperor, potentate, or what have you.
Repeat as needed- which is often:
No American should bow or curtsy — ever. I am an American citizen, the equal of any other human being, no matter the circumstance of his or her position. I will never bow or curtsy to any king, emperor, potentate, or what have you.
