Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on April 3, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

We covered this yesterday when it happened, but in my estimation, the worst amateur moment thus far in the Obama presidency came when the President of the United States executed a bow to a monarch so deep that he literally had to take a step back to balance himself. Not just any monarch, either, but one of the most repressive among those nations friendly to the US. Interestingly, this came just after Barack Obama met with another monarch, and the contrast between Barack Obama’s show of respect is striking. I put together this video to demonstrate it:

People criticized George Bush for holding hands with the Saudi king, but holding hands does not signify submission to another’s authority, and certainly not in the manner that Obama’s bow does here. Holding hands is a sign of friendship. And for those who believe that a bow is another sign of friendship, note that Obama didn’t execute a bow like this for the Queen of the UK, and the Saudi monarch doesn’t bother to reciprocate, either.

So what’s the protocol for heads of state? Anderson Cooper hinted at it in his coverage of Obama’s meeting with the British monarch:

When President and Mrs. Obama met the Queen tonight, there was a handshake, and both the President and the Queen both nodded respectfully to each other.

Was it a bow? Not quite. It was more of a, “I know you are a head of state and so am I. We are both heads of state together and this is what heads of state do when they meet other heads of state.” In other words they bow to each other without actually bowing.

Well, that certainly went out the door, didn’t it? And I’m certain that Obama’s fans will try to rationalize this, but my good friend Scott Johnson at Power Line notes that the DU had already put together a defense of Michelle Obama if she didn’t curtsy when meeting the Queen:

In fact, protocol dictates that she not do so.

Angier Biddle Duke, President Kennedy’s Chief of Protocol told this very poignant story…

Before the Kennedy’s first state visit to England, Jacqueline Kennedy asked Duke whether she should curtsy to the Queen. He told her no because she was the wife of the head of state and heads of state and their wives do not go around bowing and curtsying to one another.

Three years later, after her husband’s funeral, Mrs. Kennedy received guests in the White House family quarters. When Prince Philip greeted her, she curtsied to him. Duke was surprised because Mrs. Kennedy was a stickler for protocol and had a steel trap memory for such things. Noting his surprise, Mrs. Kennedy whispered to him:

“Angie, I’m no longer the wife of a head of state.”

Duke said he immediately left the room and wept.

So, don’t be surprised if Mrs. Obama does not curtsy to the Queen. Also don’t be surprised if she gets jumped all over for it – but she’ll be doing – or not doing – exactly what she’s supposed to.

Indeed. And President Obama shouldn’t have bowed to the Saudi monarch, either.  No American President should ever make such an obsequious display to any monarch — ever.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Obama is a dhimmicrat.

Whether or not he really is or isn’t a closet mohammedian death cult member does that matter at this point? If he were a mohammedian jihadi sympathizer, how would his actions in weakening our policies, and making us more vulnerable to attack be any different than what he’s been doing and will continue to do?

The Precedent holds a great reverence for muslims. He loves them. He hates the West. Maul the Queen and prostrate yourself in front of the savages. Great.

This is the depth to which America has been dragged … and we haven’t even glimpsed the bottom yet. Bad, bad stuff coming.

National suicide is ugly, ugly stuff. I never thought I would see this.

If the king wasn’t Muslim (currently the left’s most hip fashion,) he wouldn’t have bowed.

Jimmy Carter has to be quietly celebrating that he is no longer the worst President ever.

Aristotle had a saying that a great man should be “haughty toward men and humble to the gods”. The American left has transformed that to “haughty toward conservatives and humble to every tin-pot dictator and thug on the planet”.

Obama’s obsequiousness is disgusting and base, just like everything about him and his supporters.

My understanding of the etiquette is very limited but to be fair, I understood that the correct way to greet the Queen was a simple head tip. So he may have handled that one correctly.

On the other, maybe we should just be grateful he didn’t drop to his knees and beg forgiveness for all the USA’s past ‘sins’.

progressoverpeace on April 3, 2009 at 8:17 AM

Interestingly, Wikipedia, notes this regarding bowing:

“Bowing to other human beings is frowned upon in Muslim cultures as all human beings are considered equal and bowing is only supposed to be done to God in Islam. Similarly, in Judaism the second of the Ten Commandments is generally interpreted to forbid bowing before anyone but God.”

I guess Obama doesn’t have much respect for the God of Islam. Maybe he isn’t Muslim after all. :)

Not as submissive. So, Obama is more of a beta male than Bush was toward the Saudis. Is that your idea of a good thing?

Then again, the moral equivalence crowd isn’t up on making fine distinctions, anyway, their default logic being “If Obama does bad thing X, bring up Bush’s bad thing Y, however tangential and specious the comparison”.

RandyChandler on April 3, 2009 at 8:15 AM

Yep. When the next election rolls around, the budget plan approved by Congress yesterday will have dug the hole so deep there’s no getting out of it, the economy will still be dragging its feet, and many will be developing a deep addiction to the expanded nanny state. The majority who pay no taxes will be in the driver’s seat.

Iran will have nuclear weapons, Russia will have extended its iron arm over much of eastern Europe, and Korea will have the means to take out cities anywhere in the world. And America will be disarming and so enfeebled, and so hobbled by debt, that by the end of Obama’s second term, while he rides off into the sunset with his book royalties, the American dream will be becoming but a memory…

Man I’m depressed today.

I like a tale of two bows–very telling…in martial arts, when you bow to your sensei, you must display the top of your head in deference and trust. When you’re on the mat and prepare to face off against your opponent, however, is when you half-bow, keeping your eyes trained on your opponent.

The president gave the elderly lady the opponent bow and the Saudi despot gets the sensei treatment…

capitalist piglet on April 3, 2009 at 8:42 AM

This was the difference in obama’s mind:

In bowing to the Queen, he feels he only has to acknowledge her title, so he gives her only a nod. The bare minimum. Plus, she’s white, and bowing to a whitey I’m sure rubs him the wrong way. But in bowing to the King of Saudia Arabia, not only is he acknowledging his title, but he feels, as a multiculturalist, he also needs to pay homage to a different culture, homage to the islamic religion, and homage to the monarch’s regime that sells us oil, because obama won’t let his drill for our own. In his eyes, therefore, the Saudi Monarch is worthy of much more respect.

Before the Kennedy’s first state visit to England, Jacqueline Kennedy asked Duke whether she should curtsy to the Queen. He told her no because she was the wife of the head of state and heads of state and their wives do not go around bowing and curtsying to one another.

The head of protocol and Mrs. Kennedy both should have known better–this had nothing to do with being the wife of a head of state. We do not bow or curtsy because we are not their subjects. No American, whether a private citizen or a government official, has any business bowing or curtsying as if he were a subject or is in some way subservient. And I respectfully disagree with commenters who say this is not a big deal–it is a very big deal that Americans know who we are.

I know that I have read or heard about the subject of protocol as far as the Queen goes in the past. Head of state’s wife or not, just plain American citizen, a woman shouldn’t curtsey to the Queen. You’re not one of her “subjects”. I wouldn’t be rude if it were me but as far as anything else goes she could kiss my Irish ass. Now if you’re a Catholic head of state I don’t know if the idea would be that if you are representing your country you wouldn’t kiss the Pope’s ring but in private yes, as part of your religion. That makes sense to me. But any other time, I don’t think any head of state should be bowing and scraping to any other head of state. Zero is either a dimwit or a Moslem, I’m not sure which. All I know is it wasn’t right.

It taught me something that I’ll take with me to my grave, and pass on to my children.

That’s because you were reared correctly; unlike Barry Soreto…

What about Hillary kissing Arafat chick looks like a dude.

Haunches on April 3, 2009 at 8:52 AM

Haunches, I was trying to have breakfast. Ugh, two men kissing each other so early in the a.m. :^D

I love this.

DrMagnolias on April 3, 2009 at 9:08 AM

I get the feeling this presidency is a paint-by-numbers or dot-to-dot exercise.

A very painful experiment we are forced to live through.

FireBlogger on April 3, 2009 at 9:00 AM

If it’s paint-by-numbers, then the instructions would be clear…in which case, Obama would be real stupid if he couldn’t get these protocol things right.

No, it’s more like Really Bad Improv.

misslizzi on April 3, 2009 at 9:09 AM

about the protocol office: if they coach bambi & first clydesdale correctly on some points, do they take the rest of the month off for gift giving & other issues?

kelley in virginia on April 3, 2009 at 9:09 AM

That’s our President……LIL’ BOW-WOW.

HumblyRight on April 3, 2009 at 9:11 AM

At least model-songstress Carla Bruni knows how to play it safe when greeting world leaders.

misslizzi on April 3, 2009 at 9:14 AM

Moslem head of state…is that the difference?

coldwarrior on April 3, 2009 at 9:16 AM

When your foreign policy is predicated on appeasement and blame America first, this is what we get.

liberals yelled to the rooftops about “corrupt Saudi money”,”kissing their buts for their oil”,”this is where most of the highjackers came from”,and “Bush’s money connections”.

Now that it has been revealed how much money democrats like Bill and Hillary Clinton have been taking from them and there is a democrat in the White House,it is all “smart power”.

Here’s some more of that “smart power”:

Court Rules Combatant-Detainees in Afghanistan Can Challenge Detention…in U.S. Courts

(via Ace of Spades)
http://minx.cc/?post=285374

Today, a district court judge in D.C. applied the Supreme Court’s ridiculous reasoning in last year’s Boumediene v. Bush to extend constitutional habeas rights to three aliens captured by the military during a war and held in a war-zone. The lengthy opinion is here (PDF).

Yes, aliens held overseas in military detention as combatants (and not just at Guantanamo Bay) have the constitutional right to habeas review in the federal courts. *facepalm*

Now we are starting to see the results of liberal idiocy when it comes to real world decision making.

Al-qaeda will be filing lawsuits against our Soldiers next.

Baxter Greene on April 3, 2009 at 9:19 AM

Thanks, Ed. Your video comparison is very good.

Obama uses the standard diplomatic greeting that all heads of state use to greet all other heads of state, except one.

As shown in this very revealing photo, Obama bows on bended knee to Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, “Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques.”

Note the king and his staff smiling down at Obama, not at all displeased that the President is breaking claimed Islamic disapproval of bowing.

I see President Soetoro is holding a townhall meeting in a foreign country, since when do you do that? Looking for more ass-kissing? This guy is truly a megalomaniac and in serious need of a psychiatric intervention. Or a good facepunch.

Thanks. All those fighting for our country are in my prayers.

Godspeed to Hawkdriver and his mates.

Loxodonta on April 3, 2009 at 9:21 AM

He is so eager to please, so eager to make “us” loved…he is in for a big surprise, and let down.

right2bright on April 3, 2009 at 9:21 AM

ProfessorMiao on April 3, 2009 at 8:38 AM

I see us headed down that trail also. I used to think that the American People would not stand still for such a fate, but I do think that we have, or are close, to tipping the balance where the majority of people will be more concerned about their handouts than American and what she used to stand for.

kam582 on April 3, 2009 at 9:22 AM

OT,
hawkdriver is being or has been deployed. Those of us who pray do so for him and his mates. Those of us who don’t do whatever it that you do in situations like this. I’m praying.

thomasaur on April 3, 2009 at 8:21 AM

Our prayers are always with those who defend our country…that is why I am having such a difficult time with this group of “leaders”…are they defending our country?
