Obama, G-20: Hey, we have an extra trillion laying around here …

The G-20 summit has reached its conclusion, with Europe and the US agreeing on a plan to rescue the world from its credit crisis. How will they do that? By borrowing a trillion dollars. No, unfortunately, as ironic as that is, I’m not kidding. In fact, they don’t even claim that the plan will work, but they’ll borrow the money anyway.
Note the pessimistic and critical tone of the coverage in the New York Times today:
Struggling to bridge deep divides over how to revive a paralyzed global economy, the leaders of the world’s largest economies agreed Thursday to bail out developing countries, stimulate world trade and regulate financial firms more stringently. But President Obama conceded that there were “no guarantees” that those measures would reverse the biggest global downturn in six decades.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown of Britain, host of the Group of 20 summit meeting called to fight the crisis, announced at its conclusion that the leaders had committed to $1.1 trillion in new funds that would greatly increase the capital available to the International Monetary Fund. The goal would be a revival in trade, which is expected to contract this year for the first time in 30 years.
But the combination of loans and guarantees fell short of an injection of fresh fiscal stimuli into the economic bloodstream — the result of a stubborn division between Continental Europe and the United States over whether to act now or wait to see whether existing spending measures took effect.
Moreover, the final accord was far more forceful in addressing the plight of emerging economies that had been sideswiped by the financial crisis than it was in addressing the deep recession in the largest countries where the crisis began.
If Obama intends to come home in triumph after this G-20 meeting, he’s going to face a hard sell. Just how much of this $1 trillion will come out of American pockets? We passed a $700 billion Porkulus bill to supposedly stimulate our economy, even though at least half of that money won’t get spent for another two years. Congress just passed a $3.5 trillion budget for FY2010, representing another increase in government spending, separatei from Porkulus. Even the rosiest of rosy projections for next year’s deficits puts us at over $1.2 trillion in the red.
Borrowing money to spend one’s way out of bankruptcy … now there’s a strategy! Well, Obama said that there were “no guarantees” that this would work. No kidding.
Michael van der Galien takes a look at the view from Europe about the G-20 results. The bottom line — Obama and Gordon Brown got thwarted from spending even more money:
European conservatives believe it could have been worse. Considering the ones in power today, and especially considering Barack Obama’s goals beforehand, European commentators point out, the summit can be called a success. Obama wanted European governments to ’stimulate’ their economies just like he did at home, but in the end accepted their refusal to play along. The latter got what they wanted. They were prepared to invest heavily in the IMF and to help ailing economies survive, but they were unwilling to adopt Obama’s plans for their own economies.
European progressives are satisfied that “progressive action” has been taken, but not as progressive as Obama wanted. Conservatives, meanwhile, tell themselves: “thank God Obama and Brown didn’t get their way.”
Be sure to read it all. Michael links to a “thank God it’s over” response in the Telegraph:
It all depends where you set the bar. In my view, nothing too stupid has been decided and some reasonable measures have been agreed, though most, such as strengthening the International Monetary Fund, were widely expected. There is one very obvious missing item from the G20 communique – a further economic stimulus package – but that is no bad thing, given that plenty has already been done, and at substantial cost. Instead there is new money for trade loans and the like. That’s good enough for me.
So yes, it could have been worse. When a group of progressives and nanny-staters get together to plan their economies, a trillion-dollar promissory note may be the least bad result.

So now we’re on the hook for an addition trillion(or at least a sizable portion of it) as well as $787 billion for porkulus, $410 billion for omnibus, $700 billion for TARP, $3.6 trillion for the budget, plus all the bailout money which I can’t even keep track of anymore?
Am I missing anything or does that pretty much cover it? And where may I ask is this money coming from again?

I hate to be ProfessorGloomandDoom, but alas, I think you are wrong. How many countries who have gone down the nanny state road have succeeded in reversing that course? None, even when they know it is not sustainable. The majority become addicted to relying on the government, and that is what determines the outcomes of elections. And Obama’s changes to tax policy have the effect (and intent?) of putting elections in the hands of the people who pay not a single cent for the nanny state he is creating.

javamartini on April 3, 2009 at 9:56 AM
No global stimulus was passed.
Stated more truthfully, no global government spending drain on the economy was passed.
Government spending does not stimulate the economy. It just takes money from people who WOULD stimulate the economy. At best, we could hope for a short-term gain by spending money now. But even in that case, the looming of the future repayment retards growth. In reality, government spending is inefficient, and so you get less growth than you would if the private sector borrowed the money or just proceeded normally.

This is very true, but not from the central banks, by my reckoning. This idiotic ploy is coming from the political left (The Precedent and the insane dem Congress). The Precedent thinks that he’ll be able to call martial law when the dollar disintegrates, but he doesn’t understand that the chaos will be far beyond the control of the federal government. Very far beyond.

Tried to find out where I read what I was talking about. I got the feeling it was here on Hot Air, but couldn’t find it. All I could find was talk about the Millenium Development Goals of the UN and an increase in foreign aid to(of?) Africa to 50 billion dollars (apparently ignoring Bush’s increase to that exact amount).
Looking at the lofty goals of the UN, attempting to achieve them would probably cost more than 1% of our GDP.

Yup indeed. It will be up to Middle America to save America as the Founding Fathers wanted it or sit back and let it slide into the abyss. Tea Parties are raising awareness. It will take other means like in 1776 to insure it. I hear the word resistance on an increase in my neck of the woods. It is said with no anger but sincerity as folks see their vision of America becoming destroyed by a Pretender in office and a Congress that is tone deaf & corrupt.
Taking America back may involve a little violence at this point. Are you ready for that?

This is ridiculous. This just goes to show that even local news lies or doesn’t check their sources because I heard 2 different numbers on 2 different radio stations yesterday. 610 WTVN in Columbus first said that the IMF would get $1 Trillion and then later they said $500 Billion; while 1290 WHIO in Dayton said $750 Billion.
I of course already knew it was at least $1 Trillion because I read it before I heard about it on the radio, however now I find out that it’s apparently $1.1 Trillion now. I was thinking to myself yesterday that with all of the conflicting reports that soon we would hear the real number and it would be $2-3 Trillion. Sadly it actually looks like we are heading that way.
Maybe the 2 radio stations here in Ohio somehow got the number that JUST the U.S. would be giving to the IMF? Wouldn’t that just be great?

I was cleaning my couch the other day and lo and behold a found a trillion dollars underneath the cushions. So being the Biden democrap patriot I am, I immediately sent it to that bold symbol of truth and integrity, Mr. Geithner, and told him, that I wanted Mr. Obama to have a successful summit, so that a generation from now people will say, I knew Mr. Obama, and Mr. Obama was a JFK. I therefore wired the money to Treasury and told Geithner to have Obama put it in a world stabilization fund (being a good democrap I told him the UN should have control in distributing it because they are honest and non political to a fault). Geithner said that the UN had more pressing issues to deal with than handling my trillion dollars, but that Mr. Obama and the G20 would make sure it was well spent. I wiped my brow, and thanked Mr. Geithner, and told him to thank Mr. Obama for his fiscal discipline and his rescuing of the capitalist system from those reckless republicans over at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and Wall Street. I thought I heard him chuckle, but I’m sure it was just some interference on the line.
And that’s what I did on my Spring Vacation.

Bishop on April 3, 2009 at 11:05 AM
But he IS preparing. I can’t believe some of the naivette I see around here. Any semi-serious student of history knows exactly what’s happening, and exactly how it ends up, every single time. There are reasons why I don’t do things like get a concealed-carry permit (just go ahead and tell the govt you’re armed….not me). There are reasons I tend to distrust any currency issued by any govt (it’s as valuable as the paper it’s printed on).
Let’s talk about control. That’s what “gun control” is all about, it’s not about the guns. The govt now controls the supply of energy, food, and housing (don’t believe me, try not paying your property taxes). They have just taken control of all the money, such as it is. They are now taking total control of the means of production of the transport industry (but what about the foreign companies, right? They are already mostly govt controlled).
This is not going to be stopped by the republicans, they just do the same thing more slowly, and that distinction is becoming a joke. Trolls like athensboy and drywall may not know it, but they’re on the winning side (getalife is obviously one of the bosses creating traffic, no one is that stupid). Granted, the “winning side” in all this is gonna lose just like the rest of us, unless they manage to make it to “elite” status before the final take-over, but the point stands.
Learn to live in a totalitarian nightmare, this is how it happens every time and no one here can point to a single exception, save those that currently exist and we can all see where they are ALL headed.

Dude, he can’t spend a trillion dollars or any portion thereof of taxpayers money on Europe by himself. If the Democrats are left to just wrack up a bill like they’re movie stars shopping at Neiman Marcus on Rodeo Drive for the next two years we will have to claim complete and utter insolvency, scrap it, and start all over again. The printing pressing can’t produce dollars that fast.
