Heart-ache: No kiss for Obama from Sarkozy’s wife

posted at 6:56 pm on April 3, 2009 by Allahpundit

The Daily Mail wonders, did he snub her or did she snub him? Given that she used to be a supermodel, I’m guessing he didn’t snub her.

Politics ends at the water’s edge, my friends. When it comes to the president of the United States getting a kiss from the world’s hottest first lady, we stand united.

It is usual in France to greet one another with a kiss – but the best Mr Obama could get out of a suddenly flustered Carla Bruni was a handshake.

Ms Bruni appeared to lean in to kiss the president’s cheek as she greeted him on his arrival in Strasbourg for a Nato summit today.

But when Mr Obama did not seem to reciprocate, she hesitated then quickly backtracked, settling for the handshake and a smile instead.

Hard to tell from the vid. A tough day for Mrs. S overall, it seems, as the media’s decided she lost her fashion showdown with Michelle Obama. And to think, Howie Kurtz finds their coverage of her a tad gushy.

Blowback

The last person he kissed before Michelle Obama was Frank Marshall Davis. Obama is bi.

I saw a really close-up picture of Barack & Sarkozy talking somewhere today. Barack wants him bad.

Now we know that Obama is no Bill Clinton. Clinton could charm the pants off a marble statue. Obama couldn’t charm the pants off a $10 whore.

BottomLine5 on April 3, 2009 at 10:38 PM

It does seem funny that Obama had no problem kissing him. Maybe Michelle told him if he kissed her she’d deck him.

Jaynie59 on April 3, 2009 at 10:39 PM

I’m thinkin Michelle had B’s testi’s in her handbag. Don’t you dare put your lips on her.

Jed1899 on April 3, 2009 at 10:42 PM

Michelle is the better fashion plate, over Ms. Bruni? Surely you jest???

All the gushing in the world, will never convince me, that Michelle has such grandiose taste, in fashion. Not that I really care, but c’mon. Everything she wears, is underscorced by that bum!

capejasmine on April 3, 2009 at 11:20 PM

haha

Uncle Obammie’s used that bobble-head ‘hey bebe’ thang when they made eye contact. He’s got that whole shuck n’ jive thang down with da first ladies… yo.

I don’t think he intentionally avoided the cheek kisses. He’s still just a newbie, with little pre-existing refinement to begin with, and he obviously wasn’t very well briefed on custom etc, again, and he simply flubbed it. On her part, I don’t think she avoided it. She absolutely seemed prepared to follow through, but she is also classy and appeared to be well versed in the cultural short comings of foreign visitors and deftly avoided an awkward moment saving them both from a possibly embarrassing moment. Very nicely handled by the French First lady I’d say.

That we continously say “but the Democrats do it too” shows how much the conservatives/Republicans have been remiss at setting forth the philosophy and principle that are supposed to undergird conservatism.

“Cowards to the right.”

csdeven on April 4, 2009 at 2:54 AM

Bah. Sarkozy’s wife is a jerk. She wouldn’t kiss me either. And that’s after I wrote her two emails asking her to.

Not sure about the Bruni thing, but Barry was in his element, wasn’t he? A literal “red carpet” with thousands of adoring fans cheering. Hmm.. seems like I saw an ad mocking Obama as a celebrity at one point, but his campaign quickly reminded us that that was silly… right?

RightWinged on April 4, 2009 at 6:10 AM

Carla Bruni made sure to downplay her looks for the event, for she knows, as we all do, that there’s just no comparison between her and Michelle.

misslizzi on April 4, 2009 at 6:15 AM

Bruni had Mick Jagger, a real rock star. What does she need Obama for?

adamsmith on April 4, 2009 at 7:46 AM

Clearly Bruni is shunning Barack because of his anglo-saxon heritage.

heh heh. Glad to finally see at least one white woman turn his kiss down. Good for her.

The American people are past caring about “honor” in the old sense or Ogabe would not be prez.

Go back to the ’80s and let us win elections now.

sven10077 on April 4, 2009 at 8:53 AM

No way I would have kissed him either.

becki51758 on April 4, 2009 at 9:38 AM

I love the purple dress without the overcoat. It was beautiful. She even made a former supermodel look ordinary in the shot of them together. I’m so glad the US is glamorous again.

dcwvu on April 3, 2009 at 7:14 PM

Oh please. while the dress was not her usual disaster the coat was part of her standard bad taste. Why can’t the woman get some help in dressing for her body? You’d think that “such an educated woman” would understand the purpose of a full lenght mirror.

katiejane on April 4, 2009 at 10:22 AM

I think the poor gal was obviously scared. I’m sure she’s heard that once you go black, you never go back…knowhatimsayin’.

I think that’s what I said.

sven10077 on April 4, 2009 at 8:53 AM

Without an undergirding principle and philosophy of conservativism, “you” were unable to win elections in 2008.

In the eighties I was part of the force which hepled bring down a totalitarian edifice. I don’t intend to see another built now and I don’t intend to sit around while people like you keep trying proven unsuccessful tactics.

So excuse me, hon, if I don’t take “let” your type determine my political future.

Did Michelle Obama hire Julie Andrews as nanny? The coat she’s wearing looks like it was made out of drapes.

Michelle Dubois on April 4, 2009 at 12:33 PM

Reminded when Carol Burnett did a parody of Gone With The Wind. She was wearing the drapes, curtain rod and all…

seabee1 on April 4, 2009 at 1:27 PM

When The Precedent come out he won’t need TOTUS because those feeling run true and deep.

nolapol on April 4, 2009 at 6:02 PM

Actually…It looks like obama –It looks like he knows he flubbed it, and it sounds like he says “I want a ‘do over’” as he opens up his arms.
At that point Karla says something like “they like you” or something to that nature.
Which translated means “You snooze you lose, you loser”.

Seriously..checkit out and listen for it.

Handel on April 4, 2009 at 7:44 PM

I seriously hate the kissing thing. So if Obama could just tell the Euros to knock it off all together… What’s wrong with a good ole American handshake? I know losing battle…. but hey European culture only has a few more years and all the women will be wearing burkas anyway…

petunia on April 4, 2009 at 8:33 PM

Michelle seems to lean toward the upholstered look in clothes… I hope this isn’t the big fashion and we will all be wearing our couchs soon. Sigh.

What?!? You mean Bawney (I wike your) Fwank rejected 0Bama, too? Barry did have a bad week, then…

dmh0667 on April 5, 2009 at 4:26 AM

I wouldn’t kiss her either, she’s a friggin walking Hep C petri dish.
