Video: Tea leaves in the mail look like an attack

posted at 12:08 pm on April 2, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

My friends at NowHampshire are laughing about the reaction from Rep. Carol Shea-Porter’s staff after getting a Tea Party protest letter in the mail, but I’m not so sure we should scoff. Ten years ago, if someone got tea leaves in an envelope, no one would have batted an eye. A few anthrax attacks can change your perspective:

Taxpayer tea parties have rattled some politicians in Washington, as thousands have gathered in cities across America to object to President Obama’s spending policies. But no politician was rattled as severely as the staff of Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH) was yesterday.

After opening an envelope containing a teabag and marked “Tea Protest” in the Congresswoman’s Manchester office, Shea-Porter’s staff called Capitol Police and city police and firefighters.

The authorities instructed Shea-Porter’s staff to seek “refuge” as they performed field tests on the substance contained in the tea bag. It turned out to be green tea.

Was it a teabag, though, or loose tea leaves? The video report appears to indicate the latter, not the former. When they say “green substance” and “green material”, it doesn’t sound like a teabag. Given the mailed attacks during 2001-2, any political office would be foolish not to take precautions when finding an envelope filled with an unknown substance.

The Union-Leader’s coverage makes this even more clear:

After the letter arrived at Democrat Shea-Porter’s office at 33 Lowell St., Capitol Police in Washington told the staff to call city police and firefighters.

Manchester Fire Lt. Paul Smith said emergency responders quickly identified the substance as tea or tobacco. But they tested the material to be sure.

Since tobacco doesn’t come in bags, with a couple of exceptions for dippers, it certainly sounds as though the protester mailed loose tea leaves.

The person mailing the letter obviously intended it as nothing more than an extension of the Tea Party protests, so the police have rightly dropped the matter. I’d call it a good lesson all the way around. When sending tea to your elected representatives, send it in the wrapper. It’ll save you a visit from the local police, and save your community some money on emergency services.

“containing a teabag”

Fear the teabag.

Or the teabagger.

Or something.

(Definite overreaction if a teabag was sent. Politicos will be getting a lot of these if they haven’t already.)

Note to self: forget about sending any loose Cremora with the teabag.

Smoking tobacco does come in bags…you just need rolling papers to use it…or a pipe…

But “green”…that’s not smoking tobacco.

Tobacco can come in a small bag, if it is of the smokeless variety.

And in any case, the thing was labeled “tea protest.” What kind of diabolical plot could involve someone trying to disguise tobacco as tea? Hope the guy makes a cup and gets cancer?

That would be one patient terrorist.

DaveC on April 2, 2009 at 12:25 PM

This is obviously intentional over-reaction by Shea-Porter’s staff, who want to stifle dissent. The tea parties are highly publicized beforehand. Also, traces of loose tea frequently escape tea bags, so the basic message is “Don’t send us tea.”

What’s next? Reporting promises to vote her out as death threats?

Christien on April 2, 2009 at 12:25 PM

We scanned a few tea bags arranged on the scanner and made a couple of files. One is in color, the other in black and white. We sent out over 20 of them yesterday. They had better be concerned as I am fed up with almost the entire Congress for legislating my rights away. I am glad to hear that they are noticing. Maybe they will stop and think before voting for something they haven’t debated or read. Their time is up.

Oh, did you know that the Washington Redskins were once the Boston Redskins? Did you know that the Boston Redskins were named after the participants in the actual Boston Tea Party, who disguised themselves as Native Americans Injuns?

View from a conservative in New Hampshire: Carol Che-Porter (that’s what many of us up here call her) is a joke. She had succesfully beaten her incumbent opponent in 2006 solely on her anti-Iraq War views, nothing else.

In October of 2008, a New Hampshire National Guardsman, Cpl. Scott Dimond, was killed by a roadside IED in Afghanistan. He had joined the NG in his late 30s after spending his career as a police officer in the central NH city of Franklin. He volunteered for Afghanistan, and also volunteered to ride point in the convoy that was attacked.

At his military funeral, thousands of people showed up, including hundreds of military people.

The first person to speak at the service was Governor John Lynch, a Democrat. Also at the service were all of the other members of the NH Congressional delegation except for 2 members. Rep. Paul Hodes, also a Democrat, and now-former-Senator John Sununu were also there. Senator Judd Gregg had a legitimate excuse to miss the service, as he had already been previously scheduled to be at the Portsmouth NH Naval Shipyard that morning for the christening of the new attack submarine, the USS New Hampshire.

Che-Porter however was conspicious by her absence. And when I got home from the service (Scott was the son of a good friend of mine) I found a fund-raising e-mail from Ms. Porter in my in box.

I replied asking her why she wasn’t at the service. And never got a response.

Last week the city re-named the police station in Scott’s name to honor him. I’m sure she was too busy to attend that ceremony as well.

The adults are in charge in Washington now. I have to remember that.

This state has drifted left for the last 10-15 years. I’ve written her on numerous issues. Just get haughty, dismissive responses (probably from staff) like “BIG-OIL” and “special interests”.
Will be attending tea party on 4-15 in Manchester. There is a river there and would dump tea in it…..ooopps, can’t do that because it may raise the PH levels and oofffend some aquatic life. This is the same river Al Gorleone had levels raised for his canoe trip during one of his campaigns.
State Motto here in NH: LIVE FREE OR DIE
