Video: Tea leaves in the mail look like an attack

My friends at NowHampshire are laughing about the reaction from Rep. Carol Shea-Porter’s staff after getting a Tea Party protest letter in the mail, but I’m not so sure we should scoff. Ten years ago, if someone got tea leaves in an envelope, no one would have batted an eye. A few anthrax attacks can change your perspective:
Taxpayer tea parties have rattled some politicians in Washington, as thousands have gathered in cities across America to object to President Obama’s spending policies. But no politician was rattled as severely as the staff of Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH) was yesterday.
After opening an envelope containing a teabag and marked “Tea Protest” in the Congresswoman’s Manchester office, Shea-Porter’s staff called Capitol Police and city police and firefighters.
The authorities instructed Shea-Porter’s staff to seek “refuge” as they performed field tests on the substance contained in the tea bag. It turned out to be green tea.
Was it a teabag, though, or loose tea leaves? The video report appears to indicate the latter, not the former. When they say “green substance” and “green material”, it doesn’t sound like a teabag. Given the mailed attacks during 2001-2, any political office would be foolish not to take precautions when finding an envelope filled with an unknown substance.
The Union-Leader’s coverage makes this even more clear:
After the letter arrived at Democrat Shea-Porter’s office at 33 Lowell St., Capitol Police in Washington told the staff to call city police and firefighters.
Manchester Fire Lt. Paul Smith said emergency responders quickly identified the substance as tea or tobacco. But they tested the material to be sure.
Since tobacco doesn’t come in bags, with a couple of exceptions for dippers, it certainly sounds as though the protester mailed loose tea leaves.
The person mailing the letter obviously intended it as nothing more than an extension of the Tea Party protests, so the police have rightly dropped the matter. I’d call it a good lesson all the way around. When sending tea to your elected representatives, send it in the wrapper. It’ll save you a visit from the local police, and save your community some money on emergency services.

And–you’ll notice that they all congregate for the most part in the most expensive places to live in the state. When did the Dems become the Party of the wealthy and semi-wealthy? and the most educated. How times have changed.

At the risk of going all HuffPo here, I’m actually not all that bugged by a Congressman calling in the National Guard to protect him from a teabag in the mail. I mean, isn’t it reasonable to suppose that Rep. Shea-Porter is going to ignore tea labels sent to her? But a full-on bag of tea?
I guess I see the progress as:
-Tea in mail;
-Bomb Squad called in;
-Evening news reports it;
-Fellow in easy chair wonders who would send tea to a Congressman and more importantly why;
-Fellow investigates (or hears it on the news) and thinks “Capital Idea!”
What return have conservatives received in the public domain for trying to be reasonable and considerate in our protests? We get ignored at best. Well, let’s take a page out of Alinsky then and refuse to be ignored.
JohnTant on April 2, 2009 at 1:09 PM
An intentional over reaction intended to delegitimize a symbolic protest? I think so. The first report said tea bags. Why question that? To check what was inside, you would need to open it (after donning your haz-mat suit) then all you would find would be the ground tea (which might look like tobacco). The Dem pol was P.O.’ed and intentionally over reacted to stop other similar protests.
So, 4,000 demonstrators assembled last month at the Fullerton tax revolt called by John and Ken, and 4,000 demonstrators make asses out of themselves in London this week. Which one received no mention in the LAT?
tommylotto on April 2, 2009 at 1:09 PM
What a bunch of over reacting whiners.
Anthrax looks nothing like tea leaves. Tobacco looks nothing like tea leaves, unless the tobacco you used was taken out of a cigarette-& that $hit ain’t green.
Pretty soon, any type of protest will be judged as ‘terrorist’ activity & we won’t be able to protest AT ALL.
This reminds me of the guy in PA who received a letter from the state’s Dept. Nat. Resources on the ‘wood debris’ dams on his property that he ‘created’ without a ‘proper permit’.
These wood debris dams evidently caused flooding & damage & the guy was ordered to dismantle them.
Turned out they were beaver dams.
Ineptitude at all levels of govt.
Govt. officials need to GET A CLUE ABOUT THE REAL WORLD.
*sigh*

Anyone else going tot he one in Phoenix?
bluelightbrigade on April 2, 2009 at 1:14 PM
Yeah, I was thinking that too. In the wrapper. Definitely.
Ryan Gandy on April 2, 2009 at 1:15 PM
Sorry…illegible…
Anyone else hitting up the Tea Party in Phoenix? I can’t wait :)
bluelightbrigade on April 2, 2009 at 1:15 PM
That guy that does the Thomas Paine speeches said that he was told to tell us to just send the string and label of the tea bag, not the actual tea bag.
myrenovations on April 2, 2009 at 12:15 PM
This is why conservative leaning people are terrible at protests. We want to follow the rules. So the very people we are protesting against, tell us the rules for protesting. And we say, yes sir! I will protest as you have instructed. Am I the only person on this planet that sees how INSANE that is?
Burning the evilchimpybushitler in effigy is way cool! Mailing tea in the mail is a terrorist act!!
John D on April 2, 2009 at 1:18 PM
Any tea parties near southern NH? Not Boston though, can’t stand the place.

Influence also from Taxachusetts. Look at what all that education brought these “enlightened” idiots. Higher taxes, especially property, less freedom and more regulation. Not to mention civil unions.
If it wasn’t so hot there I’d move to Texas. Am thinking about Idaho or Montana as well. Hell, even both US senators from Montana (demoncRATS) are against a renewal of the assault weapons ban.
mountainmanbob on April 2, 2009 at 1:20 PM
These are the same people that relate anarchist thugs across the pond…
want to keep you from donating money to charities…
want to ban used books and clothing for children…
want to experiment with fetal stem cells – even though there is no reason to…
want to fund abortions with your money…
use tax laws as a weapon…
marched in the streets with pictures of a decapitated president Bush…
And now we are to believe they’re scared of tea?
Dorvillian on April 2, 2009 at 1:21 PM
Agreed.

Wish I could do that, but can’t. I have to stay here and go down with the ship. And, my last hope, Gregg, says he’s not going to run again. I’ts all so depressing I am considering therapy as soon as I get universal health care. Might as well get something out of it all.
jeanie on April 2, 2009 at 1:28 PM
If it had been Aspertaime everything would be ok.

Do you have a protesting permit, Sir!?

Excuse me while I throw a few more trees on the burn pile.

Seconded.
They lost any and all right to tell people how to protest right around the time the “Bush should be shot” BS went into the national spotlight.
Ryan Gandy on April 2, 2009 at 1:40 PM
Agreed.
Reminiscent of The 40 Year Old Virgin:
“You know how I know you’re gay? You think sending tea leaves in the mail is a reckless act.”
SlimyBill on April 2, 2009 at 1:42 PM
This just means that tea protests, using actual tea and not photocopies, are even more effective at gumming up the system. Keep sending it in! It’s called nonviolent protest.
Along similar lines, when universal healthcare is implemented, we should all go to the doctor at the same time. I know I need a checkup. And mental health counseling. Every week.

Awesome

Even us ND folks have Dem congress people.
But our gov is Repub & believe it or not, the state teacher’s union loves him.
In fact, I’d wager most ND folks love our gov.
I have a theory about W states with Dem reps:
1. city folks through demographics are out-voting the main rural populace
2. ag people like their govt whore $$-so they vote Dem on the national ticket to get their handouts & bcs they’re socially conservative, vote Repub on the local tickets.
But that’s just in my humble opinion only.
I admit-I have once taken the govt whore $$ to stay in the cattle business, if yet but for only another few years.
Badger40 on April 2, 2009 at 2:00 PM
Not your best effort. Keep trying.

This will be used as evidence by the left that conservatives are unhinged rage monsters out to destroy everything good and decent.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, unlike Henry Paulson, doesn’t hail from Wall Street, but he’s one more example of how titans of government swiftly come to sympathize with titans of finance. They slip in and out of each other’s worlds, promote each other to the top, and mystify their work to convince the uninitiated that no one else can do it.
They easily have their way with compromised regulators ready to look the other way as a small sliver of the population plays high-risk poker with other people’s money. This sliver then has its way again unwinding the damage caused. Huge sums are pocketed on both ends.

anyone who thinks this is anything other than an over reaction intended to scare off future attempts is mistaken.
to begin with any mail sent to members of congress is now routinely screened. She is just being an ass.

Another OVER-REACTION. Anthrax doesn’t even “look” like tea.

Better yet, enjoy the tea bag as you normally do. Send in the wrapper with ‘tea party protest’ written on it. Same message, no goofus worries about terrorists.

Don’t mail the tea bag just the little tab that’s on the end of the string. They’ll get the point. Of course our imperial overlords still won’t care.

SOME TEA
LimeyGeek on April 2, 2009 at 4:31 PM
Sorry folks, I hate to break it to you but sending tea, labels, or the like is a GIANT waste of time, these idiots in Washington DO NOT care what you think, they are going to do what they damned well please and don’t think for a MINUTE you will vote any of the Democrats out of office after O’bunghole seized the census and handed at least part of it to ACORN. Free and open elections are OVER in the U.S. so don’t bother me with your “tea parties” until you have the guts to do what ACTUALLY needs to be done.
nelsonknows on April 2, 2009 at 5:16 PM
I think it is telling that Socialists who run protests like bicycling naked through San Francisco or 40 of them smearing their naked bodies with blood and protesting outside of an recruiting office or stalling traffic across I-5 (as happens here in Seattle over seal or dolphins or whales or something) criticize conservatives as they build a growing and successful “Tea Party” movement.
.
Each meeting allows us to meet, make speeches, exchange contact info, etc. More important it allows those of us who are worried about eventual violence to build a cell network, stockpile weapons and ammo, and scout out possible recruits.
