Video: Obama bows to Saudi king?

posted at 2:41 pm on April 2, 2009 by Allahpundit

Question mark in the headline because I can’t tell for sure without knowing what words passed between them, but it certainly looks like a bow. Skip ahead to 0:50 and judge for yourself. Like the boss says, whether this is more or less nauseating than Bush holding hands with his pal Abdullah while they went for a garden scroll is immaterial. The fact remains that having to co-exist with the Saudis doesn’t mean having to respect them. When they stop whipping old ladies for having unrelated men in their homes, maybe then we can reconsider observing the niceties of protocol.

If this is a bow, it’s more than Elizabeth got when The One met her yesterday. Maybe if she started beheading people for not practicing the state religion, she’d have received a little more deference. Exit quotation from a 1994 edition of the NYT, contemplating the prospect of Clinton bowing to Japan’s emperor: “Canadians still bow to England’s Queen; so do Australians. Americans shake hands. If not to stand eye-to-eye with royalty, what else were 1776 and all that about?”

Yes, I know. That image is like Jihadi pornography. It reeks of dhimmitude.

Of course, the MSM in the US are not reporting this at all. So, only readers of conservative internet sites will know about it. And many of them will only see the off-angled video that might or might not be bowing, and not this very revealing photo.

I’ve read several analyses from the right that treat this as insignificant, or consider it the equivalent of the Bush hand holding and sword dancing incidents. To me, those were cringe-worthy enough.

But, bowing on bended knee is a universal symbol of submission which is a very, very bad precedent for any president of the United States to do before any other head of state, let alone before King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, “Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques.”

Loxodonta on April 2, 2009 at 9:23 PM

Loxodonta on April 2, 2009 at 9:23 PM

Bad precedent indeed. Perhaps we should get this disgusting photo ready for some tea party posters, might be a way to get it in the public eye. Dunno if it’d work, I’m not a street protester by nature, but the MSM has got to pick this stuff up or have it shoved down their throats.

Speaking of Jihadi pornography, which is typically snuff films, it does kinda look like Obama is offering his neck for severing here doesn’t it?

Maquis on April 2, 2009 at 9:31 PM

This bowing thing gives me the creeps. My husband was positive Bush had bowed to someone at sometime, but I Googled it and have been reading the comments and it seems Bush at least never did that. 0bama could have done that to just about anyone else and it wouldn’t have had quite the same dire significance. This just gives me a really bad feeling.

Further, the photo of the President’s action can be used by our nation’s enemies to demonstrate American weakness and submissiveness.

Loxodonta on April 2, 2009 at 8:20 PM

Do you really think any photo can do more damage than Obama’s actions so far already have? The “crash” has already occurred, this is a minor fender bender on the scale of stuff that our enemy’s can use to embolden themselves. It’s that smart power thingy at work don’t cha know….

“It also leads to bowing, which is a violation of God’s law. The faithful bow to no one but God.”

The Precedent and his ilk are truly godless.

Amazed at the one’s stupidity. The King looked as if he were shaking any real mans hand, confidently looking into obama’s eyes extending and his hand to shake. The King doesn’t even look expectant of any such submission. Is that what obama saw, true confidence of a man who is not afraid. Again amazed, I know I shouldn’t be but WTF.

“Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”
Was effective, it inspired the captives of Communism.

“Muslim world, America submits!” Was pathetic, it will inspire our enemies to make us captives.

It’s amazing – the contrast. When looking at the statements side by side (yes a bow is a statement) I get the distinct feeling that I will never hear such a confident and inspiring statement from the precedent. he’s so pathetic.

The damage Obama has done so far inside our country is enormous, and he wants to do more. So, yes, comparatively, this photo is a small issue.

But I worry about what it says to our enemies abroad. I don’t want America slipping into dhimmitude as Britain and the rest of Western Europe seem to be doing.

I certainly agree. I just think Obama’s policies, foul ups, and insults towards foriegn heads of state so far makes this peanuts on the larger scope of things is all.

America will survive. We survived Jimmy Carter and then thrived. Obama is a sissy’s sissy for sure. But so was Carter. I’ll start getting worried when I have to wait in line for gas for 2 hours again.

Hog Wild on April 2, 2009 at 11:21 PM

I suppose if Germany controlled as much of the world’s oil back in the thirties, both a President Bush and a President Obama would have held hands with and bowed to Adolf Hitler.

MB4 on April 2, 2009 at 2:50 PM

Germany had large oil reserves in WWIII. The United States also had large oil reserves, which allowed it to bomb Germany’s oil reserves.

The U.S. (like Saudi Arabia) nowadays has large oil reserves. Why doesn’t the US use itsa oil reserves to its advantage?

Dhimmitude. That’s the only reason.

Don’t. American’s by and large may be ill informed. But some of these policies start hitting home, they will wake up. Most American’s know if it looks like a turd, and it smells like a turd, they don’t have to taste it to know it’s a turd.

We just have to wait for the unsilent majority to catch up and pull the blindfold the MSM has on them off. You can only fool some of the people some of the time for so long. The electorate just has to feel it to open their eyes. Or at least get their butts off the couch and vote.

Mid terms are only 16 months away.

Loxodonta on April 2, 2009 at 11:34 PM

I certainly hope for that. It’s no mystery to me why it’s so hard for folks to feel hope at this time; we are witnessing some very profound events in the life of our nation, very dangerous ones. I wish I could exercise the optimism some have shown here in their belief that we can simply reverse what Obama has done in our next turn at bat. It’s really not so easy. We have lost so many fundamental rights and protections that no one ever suggests be returned to us. The governments have overstepped their Constitutionally limited bounds on hundreds of fronts, seizing powers and dominion in places it was never meant to go, and no one suggests we chase it out and back to it’s rightful place.

This isn’t a simple tug of war where what was lost can be so simply regained. Our liberty and our blessings are unique in this world, and if lost, may never be replaced. Perhaps we will discover that God does still look after drunks and America, despite our errors, but any scriptural example of endless denial of God given liberty and endless abuse of His blessings inevitably do not end well. We are not omnipotent. We will not be forever protected against the consequences of our own mendacity and greed and apathy. There is a reason patriots have trembled in fear of the myriad ways our populace could lose their liberty through lack of vigilance and uprightness and courage. They knew how delicate a flower liberty is, and how easily it is crushed, or simply allowed to fade away.

Our failure to preserve our liberty doesn’t mean that we have to consider a do-over. It means we lose the power to direct our fate. Were we alone in the world, or isolated by great oceans from potential enemies, maybe we could recover in time, but we aren’t isolated anymore. We have giants wishing to compete with and crush us economically and militarily. We have vast hordes of ideologues hellbent on destroying us simply for the sake of aggrandizing their desert god, and they are in the initial stages of the most terrifying arms race this world has ever seen, for Iran will not be stopped by this nation and every other nation under threat by Iran will pursue the bomb with great vigor to counter it, and apocalptics have no fear to use them.

Our borders are completely open, ineffectively policed, and are already war zones for criminals combating to supply our drug addled leisure class, and an invasion route already in use by radical Islamists seeking to destroy our cities and our confidence. Weakness invites aggression. Failure essentially assures domination by a multitude of competing factions, many of which have been planning our destruction for decades.

So I really hope some day I will find true reason to feel hope. For now, I can only watch in horror as our leader submits to tyrants and prostrates before the sworn enemies of liberty in this world in the name of Allah.

But you are right, Reagan pulled off some wonderful miracles, along with JPII, and hearing that man speak always stirs my soul. May such a man be amongst us now.

So, now when someone posts that he or she thinks Obama is a muslim, he or she will be censored? Does MM know that AP is threatening to do away with the First Amendment on HotAir?

And by the way, where is the rightful screening of the occasional comments written here which are pornographic or blasphemous? Nonexistant and probably unimportant to that particular athiest.

But even the mention of the possibility of Obama being a muslim (not far-fetched considering the fact that he was raised and schooled as a muslim in Indonesia)and AP is vigilantly swooping down on the offender. Ridiculous. Unacceptable. And oh-so-like Obama.

AP really does not add anything much to this blog, but since he/she pounds out copy and does the busywork, I guess that counts for not having to bother to find someone else for now.

Mark Steyn:

So let me see if I understand American protocol in the age of Obama: The First Lady hugs Queen Elizabeth as if she’s some granny at a seniors’ center photo-op, but the President of this republic prostrates himself before King Abdullah as if he’s a subject of the Saudi pseudo-Crown.

This is a very weird presidency. But something tells me Abdullah won’t be getting the discount DVD pack of Psycho and Lawrence Of Arabia.

Hog Wild, I do hope this photo and video goes viral. An image can make a big impact.

INC on April 3, 2009 at 12:58 AM

Power Line:

It is akin to Jimmy Carter succumbing to Brezhnev’s infamous kiss at the signing of the arms accord in Vienna in 1979. It is a disgrace. As in Carter’s case, Obama’s supplicant attitude signifies his spirit.

INC on April 3, 2009 at 1:03 AM

Power Line also picked this up from DU. I wish I had seen this earlier today:

Anticipating that conservatives would criticize Michelle Obama if she were to curtsy to the Queen, one of the denizens of Democratic Underground posted this interesting anecdote yesterday (I can’t vouch for its veracity):

In fact, protocol dictates that she not do so.

Angier Biddle Duke, President Kennedy’s Chief of Protocol told this very poignant story…

Before the Kennedy’s first state visit to England, Jacqueline Kennedy asked Duke whether she should curtsy to the Queen. He told her no because she was the wife of the head of state and heads of state and their wives do not go around bowing and curtsying to one another.

Three years later, after her husband’s funeral, Mrs. Kennedy received guests in the White House family quarters. When Prince Philip greeted her, she curtsied to him. Duke was surprised because Mrs. Kennedy was a stickler for protocol and had a steel trap memory for such things. Noting his surprise, Mrs. Kennedy whispered to him:

“Angie, I’m no longer the wife of a head of state.”

Duke said he immediately left the room and wept.

So, don’t be surprised if Mrs. Obama does not curtsy to the Queen. Also don’t be surprised if she gets jumped all over for it – but she’ll be doing – or not doing – exactly what she’s supposed to.

I’m pretty sure that this is a story that lost its currency among the left today.

INC on April 3, 2009 at 1:05 AM

I’m sure our pathetic POTUS would,if he could get away with it, after bowing and actually genuflecting to a Muslim head of state.

Yes, let’s not bother with details.

December 7, 1941: Japan launches aerial attacks on Pearl Harbor, Guam and Wake Island; they invade Thailand and Malaya; Japan declares war on the United States and the United Kingdom.

December 8, 1941 8: The United States and the United Kingdom declare war on Japan; The Netherlands declares war on Japan.

December 11, 1941: Germany and Italy declare war on the United StatesThe United States reciprocates and declares war on Germany and Italy. .

So yes, technically FDR declared war on Germany AFTER they had already officially declared war with us. Of course, if you want to just pretend we’re not at war with someone while they continue to attack us, your guy for that is in the White House now.
