Video: Michelle Obama sails to Britain on a sea of media slobber

posted at 3:45 pm on April 2, 2009 by Allahpundit

Dedicated to my beloved boss, the biggest Michelle Obama fan of all. No doubt Greg Hengler could have made this 10 minutes long if he’d wanted to — there’s no shortage of fawning footage available — but blog readers like things snappy so he wisely observed the three-minute rule. In fairness, I think only part of this is attributable to lefty bias; the rest is due to the media’s fascination with royalty and fairy princesses (see, e.g., Diana and Caroline) and their enthusiasm for facile historical parallels that lend themselves to easy narratives. If you think the Jackie Kennedy comparisons are heavy handed now, imagine if the G20 was being held in Paris. Good lord. They’d be re-running Jackie’s White House tour daily on MSNBC.

Incidentally, Mrs. O’s favorable ratings are near majority levels even among Republicans. Just sayin’. Click the image to watch.

I watched, unfortunately, some of her last night. She is WAY too tall and lanky to be considered a duplicate of Jackie or Diana. I was flabbergasted at the comparisons. She had a sleeveless white blouse on when over PM Brown’s on Downing standing out front. She towered over everyone; stood with her legs crossed awkwardly; and that blouse made her biceps look enormous. She looked like she should be coaching NCAA Women’s basketball for UConn or something. Reminds me of Love & Basketball not the West Wing. Very Cheryl Miller-seque not Lady Di.

Maybe it’s just me, but I always thought of the FLOTUS as classy, elegant, stylish, compassionate, thoughtful, smart, nurturing, steady, studied and well spoken. Dainty yet strong. Inspiring, quiet yet firm in resolve, a person for all young ladies to emulate and aspire to being.

I guess the former first ladies have raised the bar too high and we will have to settle for _____.

Yawn… As for this particular clip, it’s a no brainer to assemble a montage of political royalty comments from the ones who fawn over our President. It’s the equivalent of showing video clips of a sunny sky and marveling over the color blue. Now if you want to impress, create a montage that shows us something we don’t already know.

I never heard of the lady before the presidential campaign. I recall some people whining about attacks on her speeches. I don’t recall much about the actual attacks, just that they were “unwarranted”. I don’t really care if it was or not. When you are in that kind of spotlight you have to be an adult and deal with the slings and arrows that get hurled.

bigskinny on April 2, 2009 at 4:55 PM

She is ugly from the inside out. Her graceless behavior is m mirrored in her lumbering posture. She doesn’t carry her extra pounds well, and she is out of shape, no matter how much the media raves about her arms. She has that scoop mouth and an evil smile. Her eyebrows would provoke a tweezing duel from Joan Crawford. There is absolutely nothing nice, pretty or inspirational about The First She-Hulk.

We The People have been deprived of a real First Lady, deprived of a strong POTUS and delivered a TOTUS and a big sh*t sandwich to swallow down the road to socialism. And, we’re a little upset. Sometimes I find solace in the humor on the site and hope that it will not be banned.

And, just for some nostalgia and at the risk of admonishment and banning, let’s all give a shout out to the good ole 70’s where we clapped and sang and laughed about racial divides!

Question for Allahpundit:
If she was a manly white woman would you allow people to criticize her looks, attitude and demeanor?
When I look (reluctantly) at MO I see ugly from the inside out.
This woman is not proud of America, now or ever.
Her affirmative action job at the hospital was no more obtained on merit than Shrillary becoming a Senator.
She hates white people, as evidenced by HER sitting in that church for 20 years.
Like her husband she is educated but uninformed.
To me that is real ugliness, not some off the cuff name calling.

HammerNH on April 2, 2009 at 5:04 PM

I thought hateful vile destructive tactics were a province of the Left.

Maquis on April 2, 2009 at 4:54 PM

I thought that at a minimum the United States of America could be proud of its leaders, namely Barack and Michelle Obama. They have embarrassed our Nation publically.

I have some faith in Barack Obama, but he has underperformed. He has consistently showed a lack of integrity through broken campaign promises. A lack of intelligence through the use of teleprompters at every event. A lack of ability to think on his feet even in friendly US press conferences. A lack of knowledge of the free markets. A lack of ability to properly vet nominees to stand by his side in his cabinet. His wife has shown disdain for our country, a lack of class, lack of decorum and a lack of respect for our allies.

Are these thoughts from an individual ‘hateful and vile tactics’? Or, are they factual evidence that has been played out left, center and right and even overseas.

Key West Reader on April 2, 2009 at 5:04 PM

Tell that to SnarkVader, Poptech & Co, who called Palin every insulting adjective in the dictionary. Apperantly that has a place here, and it’s OK since 99% of HotAir is there to defend her?

Yes. Any site is going to have trolls. The point is whether the trolls are vastly outnumbered by the thinking posters. That’s the case here when it comes to Palin, in that both people who like Palin and outright Palin cultists will com to her defense.

On the other hand, a sizable chunk start calling MO a Klingon, ugly, b***h, etc. Who defends her? Very, very few posters. How do you think that looks? If anything, that’s hypocritical.

I am just pointing out the blatant hypocracy here by Allah and others. But we can go back and forth on this forever, so we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

Norwegian on April 2, 2009 at 4:59 PM

That’s not hypocrisy. If a small percent of commenters were the ones throwing the low blows on MO, and the majority were telling them to grow up and start treating her with the same respect they want Sarah Palin to be given, Allah wouldn’t have to tell people to settle down.

You know, after watching tourists in NYC for 20 years I can report that America (at least the ones who come to hang out and be ‘cool’ in Times Square) are overweight and wear terrible clothes that fit 20 lbs ago. The guy in the faded jeans, shiny white sneakers and a t shirt that proclaims “Hook ‘em Horns” for example. Or the woman in her camel-toe inducing mom jeans and cutesy holiday sweater. Gotta look sharp when going to Applebees before catching Mama Mia.

But hey, it’s America – wear whatever the hell you want. Just don’t criticize what others wear. You really shouldn’t talk.

INC on April 2, 2009 at 5:01 PM

Still, though, attacking fashion? I’m not saying it’s wrong, but it’s cheap, not to mention vapid. The woman talks in ways that imply forcing people to adhere to her will, and bashes the country her husband just became the leader of…and we resort to being offended at her choice of dinner gowns?

That’s one of the cases where I really am ashamed at America, because in few other countries would people really be bemoaning clothing choices of the families of their leaders in the middle of an economic and constitutional crisis.

As long as she keeps up with pretending to do her Martha Stewart thing, I will deal with the Incredible Hulk posturing as First Lady.

The minute she inserts herself into policy (which she will) she incurs my wrath.

The O’s are utterly ridiculous imo, in every way. MO is an abomination and her prissy husband is completely out of his league. They are an embarrassment.

Cody1991 on April 2, 2009 at 5:11 PM

Woah… This is weird. A posting on the gushiness of the press as it relates to the first family gets sidetracked so very quickly towaards:

5. Calling another first wife a killer (really you wanna go there?)

You’re the reason New Yorkers have a reputation for being rude. You call visiting Times Square an example of the unwashed masses trying to be ‘cool.’ I call it a nice way for the city to make money besides taxing the locals to death.

But by all means, treat visitors to your home with contempt, because what is more American than quietly judging others and reinforcing your pathetic need to feel important at somebody else’s expense?

Hopefully when they hand out the Mao jackets and pants to the “workers” everyone’s body type will be considered. Also, as Cap and Trade, emissions restrictions, energy monitoring, etc. go into place and food becomes too expensive, all your fat americans should slim down to government prescribed weights. Our First Lady has the demeanor of Eeyore, but lacks the grace, poise, and fashion sense of that depressed ungulate.

And let’s not even get started on the specific comments she’s made.

Frankly, if the Europeans are so enamored with her, I’d be willing to see if we could arrange a trade.

Bob Owens on April 2, 2009 at 5:22 PM

You really shouldn’t talk.

capitulus on April 2, 2009 at 5:09 PM

Awesome. So because the overall consensus is that I dress awesome, I get to criticize others who dress badly?

Then Michelle Obama has horrific taste in clothing. really, does she dress in the dark? Perhaps Clinton and Stacy from What Not to Wear can do an intervention.

I think Michelle looks fine, but I also think that the Dems are using the slobbering over her to push their radical agenda, even to the G20 group. Is Hollywood turning the whole world into letches? Is France turning us into Haute Couture junkies? It’s sickening.

Christian Conservative on April 2, 2009 at 5:23 PM

Michelle O is there not as Michelle O, but as First Lady of the United States of America. I’d like for her to look as if she took her position representing the country seriously.

Going back to Malloy’s old Dress For Success, clothes make an impression. They indicate what you think about yourself and those whom you are meeting.

INC on April 2, 2009 at 5:21 PM

I can understand and somewhat agree with that. However, we both know she doesn’t take her position seriously as anything other than a source of power.

MadisonConservative on April 2, 2009 at 5:23 PM

Who the hell cares what color she is. It isn’t relevant in the least. You know who cares? Loser whites that can’t stand that they are slipping down in the pecking order year after year.

capitulus on April 2, 2009 at 5:13 PM

Right. But why criticize her at all? What’s the motive? Is it because she’s liberal? Hardly, she barely even discusses policy. We all know why you people despise Michelle so much…she’s just too black for your liking.

I lived there for 10 years, and my closest friends are the native New Yorkers, a rare and lovely breed. Then you have the freak city transfers who will always be more not from somewhere than from there, even if they’ve lived in Manhattan for 20 years.

viking01 on April 2, 2009 at 5:28 PM

Aren’t First Lady approval ratings usually pretty high as long as they stay out of the political arena?

I’ve had no issues with Michelle Obama since she stopped giving political speeches on her husband’s behalf where she spoke of how horrible and mean the U.S. is. As long as she maintains the usual First Lady role of staying out of politics and focusing on humanitarian efforts, I won’t have an issue with her.

If she goes the Hillary route though and she steps into the political arena, I reserve the right to take issue with any stupid policies she comes up with. The flip side is that I will wholeheartedly support any good policies she comes up with.

JadeNYU on April 2, 2009 at 4:32 PM

Well said. I think there’s some lingering resentment over the things Michelle said during the campaign – she adopted a confrontational attitude, and some pushback is inevitable. She did not present herself as an elegant, benevolent non-combatant during the campaign.

More troublesome is the slobbering media worship of both Obamas. It’s a curious feature of leftists that they need to elevate their leaders into epic heroes. As worshippers of government power, they have a deep need to believe the masters of socialist government are titans. The media shares this basic liberal predilection, amplified by their romantic attachment to towering figures who cast long shadows across history – they are always in love with those whose biographies they find compelling, and who make spectacular promises about “taking charge” and using huge amounts of power “for the people.”

That’s why you get laughable nonsense like health magazines declaring Barack Obama, an underweight smoker with a history of drug use, to be a superman whose physique is the new standard by which all men should be measured. I doubt even those who seriously dislike the Obamas would mind a few photos of Michelle sporting around Europe and having a lovely evening with the local childrens’ choir, but breathless media attempts to portray her as a supermodel are too much to swallow, especially when we all know that no Republican president or his wife would receive this kind of over-the-top gushing. No small-government conservative, no matter his biography or achievements, will ever get the “lightworker” treatment, or be spoken of as generating “more heat than any star in the room,” as a media sycophant famously described Bill Clinton. And no conservative’s wife will ever be portrayed as a dazzling runway model, even if she actually is one. As we saw with Sarah Palin, the media will not be admiring her fashion sense – they’ll be using a microscope to study the price tags on her jacket, and wondering aloud how she can dare to spend so much money on fine clothes when America is rocked by financial crises.

Yeah, I should have been more succinct; I mean the tourist breed of New Yorkers who show up in my area to go fishing wearing pants around their ankles and enough gold bling to choke a whale.

We don’t see too many of the average New Yorkers who are like every average of other states, we usually see the brash loudmouths like crappy who want everyone to know EXACTLY where they are from.

The way I see it is the media is giving her credit for being a style icon, which she clearly isn’t. Being a former working mother, like it is so hard? Possessing some sort of genius insight into working families and military families, when many first lady’s b4 her had these causes as their own, etc.

If they can fawn and drool and exclaim that she is Jackie reincarnated, then why can’t we express our aversion for her lack of style, her ugly countenance and her angry black woman schtick? I personally am repulsed by some of her comments on the campaign. They naturally have spilled over into my view of her as an “ugly person”. Libtards have no problem picking on RUSH for being FAT and a drug addict, so I don’t have a problem bringing up her obvious physical shortcomings.

I am flying my family to NYC this weekend for a jaunt of sightseeing. While our son is a “rocker” type at a young age and is a huge Beatles fan, he will dress respectfully, tastefully (much to his chagrin), and he will display the manners that I taught him.

We’re not old fashioned. We are well mannered. We ar disciplined. We ar gracious. We are polite. We are humorous. We are kind. We are generous. We are hard working. We are honest. We are discerning. We are gentle. We are faithful, patriotic and respectful to others. We are Americans.

And, so dear bloggers please look for us in NYC. We will visit our fallen brothers and sisters at the 9-11 site, we will ride the elevators to the top of the Empire State Building. We will visit the Museum of Natural History. We will visit and help to prosper small American businesses in our travels.

We’re Americans. Remember that. And enjoy NYC while she still stands proud. At least our son will experience the greatness of the Best City on Earth.

You missed the point. Laura Bush, rightfully was never presented as a Princess Di or Jackie O redux. Nor was she looking to be.

MO is not Di or O either. Just as the messiah role is wearing off BO the same will happen to MO.

Just a couple of IVY league grads in the right place at the right time, nothing special.

Good assessment. Liberals have an entirely different mindset that that of conservatives. Liberals are like children who need structure and an authoritarian figure. That is the danger when they become adults yet retain the inability to behave like adults and accept life with all its risks. They are afraid of failure, and if it happens they want a way out – someone to blame.

This is really the difference between conservatives and liberals. It’s the difference between the timid and those who are willing to accept life, grab onto the challenges and accept failures when they happen. Socialism appeals to those who cannot accept the fact that life is tough and humans are imperfect. They do not understand human nature. If they did, they would realize that grasping for the Utopian ideal is pointless.

I despise liberals for the simple reason that I expect people to grow up and face reality. They cannot. That is why I regard them as inferior, emotionally retarded and dangerous with power as we are witnessing now.

Cheers, Dr. Zero. You’re a wise person.

It must be me….. because Michelle Obama always looks awkward and rumpled (for lack of a better word). The picture with the Queen and her sweater is pulled funny and her beads are off. When everyone is dressed in suits and jackets (business attire) , she wears sleeveless cocktail after 5 dresses. Her clothes never seem to fit properly, they are pulled and wrinkle in odd places. She is pear shaped and does not care what she looks like.

The Obamas didn’t even know there was a Protocol position in the White House and that it had not been filled. DUH! They don’t even want any help they are so full of themselves.

I suddenly realized she is meeting all of my expectations…. low class – NO CLASS….

How much more time to we have to put up with them?
