Video: Is Michelle ready for a third party?
posted at 5:55 pm on April 2, 2009 by Allahpundit
Just a little food for thought inspired by Newt’s comments this morning to accompany the vid of her slicing and dicing the great Grayson/Frank salary grab of ’09. Gingrich:
“If the Republicans can’t break out of being the right wing party of big government, then I think you would see a third party movement in 2012,” Gingrich said Tuesday. The speech, to a group of students at the College of the Ozarks in Missouri, was recorded by Springfield TV station KY3…
“Remember, everything Obama’s doing, Bush started last year,” he said. “If you’re going to talk about big spending, the mistakes of the Bush administration last year are fully as bad as the mistakes of Obama’s first two, three months.”
Gingrich told the students that the current governmental system “is so sick, so out of touch and so arrogant that you’re going to have a nationwide rebellion at the polls of people in both parties who are just fed up.”
Notably, MM seems more irritated by the dozens of Republicans who crossed the aisle to vote for the AIG bonus tax and the 10 who backed Grayson/Frank — with Eric Cantor voting present(!) — than by the Democrats. I figure all it’ll take is one more push for amnesty by the GOP, which is a fait accompli given McCain’s poor showing with Hispanics last year, and she’ll be ready to embrace the new Atheist Libertarian Workers Party. One percent of the vote or bust!

We dont need a third party we need one GOOD party. One that isnt beltway mezmerized.
Conservatives should focus on reforming the party and putting pressure on the rinos by getting better organized. If we start recruiting and feilding better candidates we wont need people like Spector or other RINOs.
Conservatives can win on a conservative message. Its the medium that is killing us not the message.
William Amos on April 2, 2009 at 5:59 PM
Exhibit A on why I find all the third party talk tiresome.
Hawkins1701 on April 2, 2009 at 6:00 PM
It happened in Canada. The old Progressive Conservative Party became so liberal, that a new Conservative Party was founded and it is now the party in power.
The GOP has abandoned conservatism. Time to get this party started.

What could go wrong?
Trent1289 on April 2, 2009 at 6:02 PM
I belive in God, I believe in small government, I believe in a strong US military, I belived in a country where the old and young are treasured not slaughtered as an economic necessity by the hatefull left bent on controlling everything including human life.
I believe in Success through hard work. And hard work is not standing in a government line every month to get a government check.
I believe in challenging those that break the law no matter where they reside if in Congress or Wall Street or the White House. Honesty is something to strive for not abuse.
I want a party that plays by the rules and gives a damn about the people they represent and not just about winning elections every few years. If you can focus more on the people then on yourself then I want you in government.
Someone please point out to me where anything I said is wrong or anti America ? If I can say those things and not be challenged then how is my conservative beliefs bad ?
William Amos on April 2, 2009 at 6:04 PM
Can we trust the Republicans to be Conservatives and to be true to the Conservative beliefs? At this point I say “NO” there aren’t very many out there who I would completely trust to remain true to Cons. policies. All these people want to do is win and they will stoop to anything to attain their goal. I am so tired of being used and lied to.
UnEasyRider on April 2, 2009 at 6:04 PM
Better idea: have the Leftists start their own third party.
Third Parties are a guaranteed disaster.
Remember: if it weren’t for the dipshits who followed Ross Perot off a cliff with that bizarre “Reform Party” scam, we would never have had the Clintons in the White House.
Give up that stupid idea, pronto..
TexasJew on April 2, 2009 at 6:04 PM
Well, they were fed up with the gop and now it is the dems turn.
Of course, if the dems fail, there will not be much of a country for a third party to govern.
getalife on April 2, 2009 at 6:06 PM
This fear of third parties does not apply in a time when the GOP only gets votes by default of not being the Democrats and even then they don’t get enough to win elections because many conservatives don’t even want to vote for them. Form a strong Conservative party and the GOP will melt away in short order. Without funding, it won’t survive. It will close up shop.

Those who don’t want to follow – don’t have to. If winning elections is what’s important to you – then you can join the Democrats. No one’s holding a gun to anyone’s head.
Michelle is right. Republicans still don’t know what the hell they are doing.
I’ll tell ya what. If they don’t start fighting – I’ll sit right on my duff next year and watch them fail at the polls again. I’m not ready to put these freaks back into power – they aren’t up to it.
Hard decisions have to be made to save this country. THE DEMOCRATS HAVE THE GUTS TO MAKE THEM. They just make the WRONG decisions. But they are definitely up to the task of fighting for what they believe in.
I don’t want these Republicans to be in power again if all we’re doing is putting McCain style leadership in office. Or even Bush style. I want someone in there like REAGAN – who moved the football down the field – and didn’t make excuses.
If it ain’t in the Republican party – then we need to look elsewhere.

The people who hold power within a party are the people who generate the most cash for it and the people who have the most cash in their Political Action Committees. This “cash” becomes a way of “voting” for what direction you want the party to take.
If you’re happy with Michael Steele – then you ought to donate cash directly to the Republican party – he gets the credit for that stuff.
If you want the party to take an elitist, soft “where the hell are we today” direction – then donate to Mitt’s PAC or to Newt’s organization.
If want the party to go into a CONSERVATIVE direction – then you need to be donating to SarahPAC – or one of the other truly Conservative PACS (and those names escape me right now – if they exist at all)
At the end of the day – all these PACS lay their money out on the table and the ones with the most $$ win. They are the ones that control the party.
And Sarah Palin needs to make a move now – she is doing too much hibernating up there in Alaska. She needs to get in front of the game soon to stay viable.

A lot depends on our new batch of leaders and if the old GOP wood can be uprooted. Without a housecleaning, we’ll continue to glow Democrat-Lite. Michael Steele doesn’t fill me with confidence major changes will happen. A slow bleed still takes one to the same destination.
a capella on April 2, 2009 at 6:20 PM
Exactly. Starting a third party sounds good just to scare the Rhinos, but it’s just self-defeating, as it is the surest way to get the left elected.
Instead, we have to fix the republican party’s lack of good capitalist philosophy.
We can start with the statement “Greed is bad” and work our way from there.
The only reason we have these rhinos is that when half the party agrees with the democrats that greed is bad, fighting socialism is impossible on the long run.

petunia on April 2, 2009 at 6:29 PM
Short of a third party, there aught to be a better way to separate the wheat from the chaff in the Republican party. The ACU ratings are practically worthless for making a determination. Here are the ACU ratings for the 10 house Republicans that voted for arbitrary salary control, as well as Cantor, which voted present:
86.47 Bilirakis
84.58 Brown-Waite, Ginny
Cao (no rating)
72.06 Diaz-Balart, L.
75.94 Diaz-Balart, M.
87.03 Duncan
87.98 Jones
71.55 McHugh
94.76 Rohrabacher
73.45 Ros-Lehtinen
96.25 Cantor
The problem is, IMO, that the rating isn’t weighted by the importance conservatives place on the various issues. If the American Conservative Union polled conservatives on a periodic basis to determine appropriate weighting, or if they allowed users to weight issues for themselves using an interactive web site, the would actually mean something.

and she’ll be ready to embrace the new Atheist Libertarian Workers Party
I thought it was the “Hawkish Atheist Libertarian Party”. “HALP is on the way” is a much better motto than “WALP is on the way”.
The problem with your “new” party is that it’s no alternative to the Democrats and Republicans because its founder believes representatives of the party should vote with the Democrats so that they won’t be seen as obstructionists. The day before the Republicans in the House all held together and voted against the stimulus package, the founder of WALP was suggesting they should vote in favor of it or else be seen as obstructionists.
It would be a much better alternative to just fix the Republican Party by replacing Steele with someone who will purge the RINOs.

Third party? Silly.
How about calling it the “Guaranteed No Republicans Ever in Office Again” Party.
More than two parties is why Europe govts. are so weak. They spend most of their time trying to get a coalition together to see who rules. And then spend the rest of the time arguing with each other.

If we’re going to start a third party, now is the time to do it. And it should be called the Patriot Party, the emblem being either a Revolutionary War soldier or a bald eagle.
ErinF on April 2, 2009 at 7:04 PM
The biggest problem with third parties is that it would take decades to build the political infrastructure they need: money, public recognition, and especially congressional support. Even if Ross Perot, the most successful third party candidate of the modern age, had won in 1992, he would have faced a Congress with not one seat held by members of his party. He would have been fairly easy for the Democrats to bend to their will. (I doubt the Republicans would have been able to muster the political ferocity to do the same – they’d have been more likely to look for ways they could accomodate Perot, provided their personal political fiefdoms were not jeopardized.)
It would take a generation to build up a party that could replace the Republicans outright, and as the people who sat home because they didn’t like McCain in 08 have discovered, allowing the Democrats total power for even one election cycle can have disastrous consequences. Splitting the “red state” vote for 10 or 12 years would bring the Great Conservative Third Party to maturity just in time to face a government that had effectively outlawed them – they’d get to be the slightly right of left of center party.
God help us, America’s hopes rest with the GOP. Period.
Doctor Zero on April 2, 2009 at 7:04 PM
No, the democrats are:
The Satanist, Huggies, Drunken, Greedy, Social party!
portlandon on April 2, 2009 at 7:05 PM
Every once in a while, the political party landscape in this country does change. The last really drastic change though was in the 1850s when the Whig Party died and the GOP took its place. I think it’s a little too early to be thinking third party just yet; however, now is the time to put the heat on our GOP leaders and let them know in no uncertain terms that we are torqued off in a major way and that our patience has just about reached its end. 2010 will be very important for a lot of reasons. If the GOP has not gotten the message by that time, then yes, I can very easily see a new political party rising.
Regarding someone’s query about the libertarians–there are some points I agree with them on, others I disagree. They tend to be a bit too isolationist for my liking, and I’m a federalist as regards issues such as abortion and gay marriage–in other words, I believe those issues should be decided by the people in the individual states either directly through referendum or indirectly through their state legislatures, but that policies should not be set at the federal level. Legalization of drugs is another issue on which I part company with the libertarians on.
To be honest, as a classical liberal in the Adam Smith and Jeffersonian tradition, I like the idea someone had of retaking the Liberal label back with a new party calling itself the Liberal Party.
