Romney: We must acknowledge when Obama is right

posted at 7:55 pm on April 2, 2009 by Allahpundit

He must be running in 2012 because he surely can’t believe this will endear him to anyone except independents.

“I also think it’s important for us to nod to the president when he’s right,” Romney said, after chiding the president’s budget. “He will not always be wrong, and he’s done some things I agree with.”

Romney, who spoke at a dinner for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said he’s pleased with the president’s plans to “finish the job” in Iraq and Afghanistan — lines that drew applause from the partisan audience. He also applauded the president for standing up to the auto industry.

“I hope he continues to be tough and shows some backbone because that industry is not going to make it unless we have real backbone and get those guys to fundamentally restructure all of their obligations,” he said.

I have no problem with him saluting The One on Iraq, but … he still can’t offer a critical word about Obama canning GM’s CEO? Play to the independents if you must, Mitt, but throw the base a little red meat now and then. Surely Sarahcuda is at least mildly peeved at the thought of the president dictating to America’s business elite. Exit citation, from the Fox News poll I just wrote about: Maybe Mitt knows what he’s doing.

We’ll see, your Obama collectibles won’t be worth much 2012, in any real currency that would be.

the_nile on April 2, 2009 at 8:33 PM

Hell, by 2012, A-boy would have already ground up his commemerative obama plate to make bread.

HornetSting on April 2, 2009 at 8:34 PM

Obama will implode with his “I-pod in every pot” mentality.

Rovin on April 2, 2009 at 8:30 PM

That would be justice. But the world today is upside down. There seems to be little truth, justice or the American way left in the world.

My daughter who is turning 10 next week heard that Obama gave the Queen an Ipod and she said, “I want an I pod for my birthday!” I told her they were extremely expensive the kind of thing a President buys for the Queen of England. She didn’t believe me.

I just love her and would have loved to see a Romney/Palin ticket. Folks…. I think there is a big surprise coming our way and very soon. Fasten your seatbelts.

DeMint/Bachmann ’12

That would come pretty close to a dream ticket for me. I’d rather see the GOP nominate someone who spends the next couple of years standing up to all the fraudulent one’s attempts to bankrupt and destroy our country, than someone who wants us to make nice with him.

califcon on April 2, 2009 at 8:37 PM

If he can fire the GM CEO, he can fire every other CEO in the country until someone calls him on Constitutional grounds and takes him to court!

We must acknowledge when Obama is right” Okay, but has there been one, just one instance yet? Or have I missed something?

AntonK on April 2, 2009 at 8:38 PM

It’s this kind of silly disingenuousness that makes folks think he’s squirrelly.

Maquis on April 2, 2009 at 8:38 PM

When has he been right again? Overall, he is ALWAYS going to be wrong in the big picture given his stated positions. Agreeing with him when his is right (which isn’t happening yet) helps his overall agenda. I would rather just remain quiet when he is right.

Okay spill! You can’t leave something like that out there! My fondest dream would be for Obama to be indicted with Blago. Well not my fondest dream that wouldn’t have anything to do with politics… But an indictment would be great!

petunia on April 2, 2009 at 8:39 PM

I don’t think Romney plans to run again. I think he feels free to speak his mind. I wish however he would say more about this stupid stupid budget today. Of course there is nothing good that can happen no matter what anyone says. Obama and the crooks in Congress ARE going to steal that money. We can’t stop them.
petunia on April 2, 2009 at 8:28 PM

I really don’t think he’ll run again either. Didn’t his wife make some sort of remark about it? Plus he spent how much of his own money in this last run and got zip for trying thanks to Huckafool.

And I hear ya loud and clear on the budget that’s getting rammed thru at record speed. Where is the outrage and discussion on that? We need to get off the “who are we going to run” crapola and pay attention to what is happening now.

Petunia – I know this is going to be perceived as sick. I spent 18 years in law. Now I just keep my husband organized as he is in healthcare and we travel alot. I keep on all this stuff. There is a road map laid out here. April is the month if this is going to come to pass. My theory involves Fitzgerald, Blago, the Clintons, Justice Roberts, McCain and Sarah. I might be nuts, but I don’t think so. That’s all I am prepared to share. Connect the dots.

Does Romney staking out a moderate position have anything to do with Mr. Newt trying to stake out a more conservative position and suggesting a third party might be in the offing?

technopeasant on April 2, 2009 at 8:54 PM

Oh my gosh. We already debated this and the grown ups (the Romney supporters) won the debate.

Romney trashed Obama, the democrats, and even McCain for an hour and then mentioned, like a grown up would, that we should recognize when Obama does something right.

Romney called for these failed CEO’s to leave months ago in the WSJ. The U.S. government is essentially the majority stockholder (something Mitt was against) and so NOW that the U.S. government is the majority stockholder (against Mitt’s wishes) it is in the majority stockholder’s best interest to get some new blood in there to turn things around so that the majority stockholder has a better chance of recouping its money.

That is how a grown-up would see it.

That is NOT how a Palintologist will see it because it requires knowledge, maturity, the reading of newspapers, and general lack of a-holeness.

OK, tards….have at it!!!

The Wall on April 2, 2009 at 8:58 PM

Mitt is dead wrong on backing Obama on Iraq. Obama is in a big hurry to get out of there and that endangers or victory there.

Always felt Mitt was weak on the WOT and this make me doubt him again.

William Amos on April 2, 2009 at 8:58 PM

Ok. Let’s everyone here think just a sec- looky at all the folks saying “OH, Romney had my vote before THIS outrage!” This is standard MO for the trolls. “Oh, I’ve voted Republican ALL MY LIFE but now this is too far!” Is anyone buying this crap? Romney was applauding Obama’s statement that he would let GM declare bankruptcy. Every conservative I read has been saying that for months (including Romney from the fall ’08), so cut the crap. The trolls/libs/media are terrified of Romney, hence the feigned outrage of “conservatives” saying this is what soured them on Romney- THEY”RE TROLLS OR MORMON HATERS LIKE RIGHT2BRIGHT. If republicans can’t see that, we don’t deserve to win. And when the US government is the owner of GM (which they are as of now), they can fire whoever they want. I don’t like it, but them’s the breaks. If Wagoner had declared bankruptcy instead of taking $14bil, he would still have a job. This is the essence of why conservatives like non-intrusive government- you suck at the government’s tit, you’re de facto in bed with the whore.

Fred Thompson tells CNN he wants Obama’s policies to fail

“I want his policies that I believe take us in the wrong direction to fail,” Thompson told Roberts on CNN’s American Morning.

“If he takes us down the road of tripling our national debt in ten years and making us vulnerable to higher interest rates and higher inflation, and things of that nature, I want all those policies not to succeed,” he said.

Thompson, who made the rising cost of entitlement spending a focus of his 2008 presidential run, said he’d be happy to help Obama overhaul those programs.

“If he wants to do that, I will join with him. I’ll do everything I can to make him succeed with regard to that because that’s the whole ball game in terms of our fiscal future in this country,” said the former Tennessee senator.

“I hope he continues to be tough and shows some backbone because that industry is not going to make it unless we have real backbone and get those guys to fundamentally restructure all of their obligations,” he said.

When you have government involved in industries “making it”, you have a faulty premise that has been established, and it’s that faulty premise that should be attacked and reversed by Republicans.

Industry should have plenty of motive to “make it” outside of pleasing politicians. If the stockholders of GM, for instance, don’t want to make money and don’t want to elect officers who will do what is necessary for the company to make money, then the company should go under.

Sorry but many experts in reading the US Constitution say it appears the President does not have the right or authority to fire CEOs or to dictate how private businesses operate. This is an overreach on Obama and his administration’s part. There is no other President in history that has interfered with a private corporation to this extent. That is why many of us are confused and troubled by Mitt’s statements. I am now a Palin supporter but I liked Mitt when he ran in 2008.

sarahpalinfan99 on April 2, 2009 at 10:07 PM

He must be running in 2012 because he surely can’t believe this will endear him to anyone except independents.

Next year at the G20 Summit, Obama will do more than listen, as he said he was going to do this time. I suspect he will make his first move for control of the Summit and set the stage for his world leader position for 2011. With the world courts and sharia law in place, he will change our Constitution for probably the 10th time and make himself president for life in addition to world leader for a 10 year reign. Don’t laugh. This is why he can laugh in the face of interviewers. He is gaining the power to do it all.

We’re in the position we are in- A is A. It’s like these flat taxers. Of course the flat tax is best but it will never, ever, ever happen. Most business’ major descicions are based on the existing tax codes- you’re going to tell them so sorry, just kidding, throw out all your strategic planning for the next 20 years? I hate the current system to (I have 36 employees and a hefty accountant bill), but it is unserious to keep bitching about the flat tax. Pick battles we can win.

You have a excellent point. While I was eating dinner my hubby brought pretty much what you had said.

Common decency and practical politics all suggest that if an elected official in high office governs competently, it should be noted and approved of, regardless of party affiliation.

Just let me know though, when and if you see any
high-ranking elected officials acting that way.

Mike D. on April 2, 2009 at 10:20 PM

Romney forgets one thing. Geithner was at the head of the herd for the AIG bail out, and Obama knew in advance, about the bonuses, yet feigned ignorance, and outrage.

That in, and of itself disqualifies him from being right.

Romney also forgets, that Obama among others, are a huge part of the problem, and were integral in the downfall of the economy.

capejasmine on April 2, 2009 at 10:21 PM

Ladies, you can still love Mitt without thinkin he might be a decent POTUS.

He’d be a good cabinet guy, but he is not presidential on the inside. He lacks courage and has too many doubts. That is not something you can teach. If you don’t have convictions at this point in your life, forget about LINE, because you are STAFF.

Sapwolf on April 2, 2009 at 9:58 PM

Sapwolf! Long time no see. You have a great point. I don’t think he would be a good President. I just admire him, but don’t feel he could cut it as a President. Great to see you.

The trolls/libs/media might have been afraid of Romney in December of 2007, but he’s yesterday’s news now. The media seem to love him the way they loved McCain before he ran against their draling, the trolls and libs don’t care.

ddrintn on April 2, 2009 at 10:24 PM

I agree with Mitt. I even said on this board a few days ago that we shouldn’t mimic the left by bashing Obama on every single issue regardless of what he does.

That being said, his Presidency is off to a disastrous start. Aside from Iraq where he’s essentially following in Bush’s footsteps, what else has this man done right? He’s broken countless campaign promises, he’s scared the crap out of Wall Street, his cabinet is filled with tax cheats, he’s spending us into bankruptcy, he’s targeting private citizens with smear campaigns, he’s surrendered in the former “War on Terror”, and he’s attempting to take over private companies.

Mitt’s welcome to agree with Obama when he does something right. We all should be mature and ideologically honest enough to do likewise. But when 98% of what this guy is doing is wrong, conservatives need to make their feelings known.

That is very true. The Trolls and Libs don’t care. I was watching Daniel Hannan on Hannity tonight. Of course the Libs and trolls won’t believe this. But if a woman has breast cancer and it is a certain stage in the UK. They are refused treatment. That is Socialized Medicine for you. He stated that he hopes that we don’t Socialize medical. I truly believe that our heartless Government is doing its best to kill American’s. Not only in Health Care but in Burdening the People with high taxes and this damn Budget that those greedy ass bites just passed.

Before Palin (who I love), the media’s favorite whipping boy was Mitt. Any reasonable person knows that. They loved McCain right up to the nomination, then unloosed the dogs of Hell. They still hate Mitt. Why? Cause they say he’s a flipper? Rubbish- Obama is king flipper, they love him. The media hates Romney for the same reason they hate palin- he is competent and can win if portrayed in a neutral light. We lose when we drink the media/troll’s koolaide. So if you’re a true Palin or Romney supporter, don’t tear the other one down. Listen with an open mind, and if Romney or palin does something right, take it in good faith. If they do something wrong, take it in good faith, ’cause one or the other will be the nominee in 2012. Remember that before you go ape

drballard on April 2, 2009 at 11:08 PM

As Rush Limbaugh says… having 31% of the American people love him, means he’s a hell of a popular guy.

I wouldn’t mind having 31% of the population like me!

joe_doufu on April 2, 2009 at 11:28 PM

Uh…you ARE aware that Saracuda was the first clown to call for Stevens to step down before the appeal process could be completed. Mitt wouldnt have been that stupid so he doesnt have to take “notes” dear.

The Wall on April 2, 2009 at 9:00 PM

But uhm … he DID NOT step down.

Let’s review kiddies.

Stevens was CONVICTED … CONVICTED … on 27 October … before the election.

Now, when William Jefferson was found to have had hundreds of thousands of dollars in his freezer – I supported calls for him to resign his seat in Congress. He wasn’t convicted yet – but if you’ve got that much money in your freezer I don’t care who you are – you got a problem.

But Stevens was CONVICTED. And in the U.S. a certain amount of stock has to be placed in a conviction in a court of law. Thusly – Palin called for him to step down. So did Obama – so did McCain and a lot of other politicians.

Now – also – no one is saying that Stevens is “INNOCENT” … hehehe … he’s not (not in the actual sense anyway). His conviction may get overturned on the grounds of proprietorial misconduct – but that doesn’t mean he did no wrong. On the contrary.

I don’t like Romney. I do like Sarah. I can’t stand Obama. That said, GM asked for money, hat in hand. The man with the money set the conditions. GM had the option of saying no. Obama didn’t fire anybody.

“We lose when we drink the media/troll’s koolaide”

drballard is right. And I think this is also Allahpundit throwing red meat to the anti-Romney folks.

Of course the story is from CNN which is going to slant the news and pluck out anything favorable to Obama and leave out the other stuff….it’s almost pointless to link to them.

I’ve read on several sites that Romney spent most of his speech prasing Republicans and taking on Obama, especially on spending issues.

Also if Mitt truly is considering a run in 2012 it’s wise to seperate his tone & language from sounding like a conservative pundit ala Limbaugh, Levin, Hannity, Beck etc.

And it really doesn’t bode well for our side if we spittle cataclysmic language at anyone who dares say a tiny nice thing about Obama….good grief…..stick a fork in him….he’s toast…..Really?

Good grief, we are going to end up no better than the worst Bush Derangment Syndome sickies.

For heavens sake Hugh Hewitt had to talk Newt down from calling Obama a dictatorship the other day on the radio.

Our principles will lose all credibility and any hope of widening if we keep up this style of debate even amoungst ourselves.

Mitt Romney is a conservative. He may not be your preference for POTUS but he belongs in the conservative party.

Anybody writing anything else has Obama Derangement Syndrome and should be quarantined until we get the White House and control of Congress back.

“Yep. Gotta get those independents at all costs. Romney/Pawlenty all the way.”

Not at all costs, I want them to be conservative independents.

I want Romney to run, not sure that he will….I think alot depends on how his wife Ann is feeling and also if he feels he can help America.

Pawlenty is good. I’m a big fan of Jindal. I think a Romney/Jinal ticket would be a tremedously competent team. And I think competency will be the main characteristic needed of a challenger to Obama.

I don’t want a Romney/Jindal ticket for the simple reason that when it gets clobbered, I don’t want to hear 4 more years of “those socons/Fundies/evangelicals/other assorted wild-eyed lunatics are dragging us down to hell”. I want to see two fairly moderate candidates on the ticket.

ddrintn on April 3, 2009 at 12:27 AM

^ For the same reason, I really wish that the last time around it had been McCain/Pawlenty or McCain/Lieberman, in retrospect. Then there would be no Crazy Stupid Sarah and her mouthbreathing followers to blame.
