Palin to Begich: Resign and face Stevens again in a new election

posted at 8:40 pm on April 2, 2009 by Allahpundit

Not going to happen, but no harm in trying:

Palin’s call came after a reporter at the Fairbanks News Miner emailed her a copy of a statement by Alaska Republican Party Chairman Randy Ruedrich calling for Begich to step down.

Asked for her response, Palin simply wrote back: “I absolutely agree.”

When the reporter wrote back to confirm that Palin meant she’d like to see Begich resign in order to hold a special election, the governor responded: “Yes.”

In an email to POLITICO, Palin spokeswoman Meg Stapleton confirmed the governor’s position. “She absolutely agrees that there should be a special election,” Stapleton wrote. “Stepping down to hold the special election would be the right thing to do.”

In the statement Palin was provided, Ruedrich said that “the only reason Mark Begich won the election in November is because a few thousand Alaskans thought that Sen. Ted Stevens was guilty of seven felonies.”

Begich says he’s not going anywhere. Er, didn’t Sarahcuda call on Stevens to step down after he was convicted last fall, before the appeals process had wound its way through the courts? Why is she willing to give him the benefit of the doubt now when she wasn’t before? And what exactly is the theory of unfairness here? As I recall, he was prosecuted by Bush’s DOJ, not a Democrat’s. Like the boss says, Stevens was a pork-guzzling corruptocrat even if his corruption didn’t rise to the level of a criminal offense. Aren’t we better off rid of him?

Blowback

Is anyone calling for Stevens to be automatically reinstated?

ddrintn on April 3, 2009 at 12:22 AM

Er, didn’t Sarahcuda call on Stevens to step down after he was convicted last fall, before the appeals process had wound its way through the courts?

Because he was a convicted felon and it made the party look like a bunch of democrats if we didn’t get rid of him, that’s why — appeal or no appeal.

Why is she willing to give him the benefit of the doubt now when she wasn’t before? And what exactly is the theory of unfairness here?

Because the convictions were reversed and the charges dismissed. The theory is that he is not a convicted felon.

These are sort of obvious questions you’re asking.

Blake on April 3, 2009 at 12:23 AM

Wow. AP sure attracts seminar bloggers to the comment pages. We have a constitutional right to a fair trial…AG Holder is overturning the conviction, which means Stevens is innocent. i.e. presumed innocent.

I am certainly game for another trial.

Ted Stevens is as innocent of any felony charge as MB4.

A felony is a criminal act…even AP says:

aigle on April 3, 2009 at 12:59 AM

For those who seem to be convinced of Stevens’ crimes, I suggest you gather some facts before you make your pronouncements.

It was a hell of a lot more than mere procedural errors. It was manufactured bullshit, most likely politically driven.

That doesn’t excuse his pork-tastic ways, but assuming guilt of criminality based on drummed-up charges, and the slanted reportage thereof, is vile.

Amazing number of astroturfers here (MB4 is an apprentice) No facts – but a valiant effort to fill two pages of comments with “Stevens really was guilty! Got off on a technicality!”

I am continually amazed that the GOP continues to fight with Marquis of Queensbury rules when the Dems bring razor blades and zip guns. How many seats have been outright stolen by ACORN and their ilk? SD? AK? MN? And the GOP plays nice? How about we start with ripping their heads off and sh*tting down their necks? Just for a start?

Or we can sit and watch these jerks and traitors destroy our republic.

Poptech on April 3, 2009 at 2:11 AM

“didn’t Sarahcuda call on Stevens to step down after he was convicted last fall, before the appeals process had wound its way through the courts? ”

Of course. Because at that moment, he was a convicted criminal. The right thing to do for a member of Congress who is convicted of a crime is to step down. Heck, some even do it before conviction, just indictment is enough to make many step down.

“Why is she willing to give him the benefit of the doubt now when she wasn’t before?”

Because the charges have been dropped and he is no longer a convicted criminal. It should now be up to the people to decide. Sounds like fair play to me.

crosspatch on April 2, 2009 at 9:22 PM

Good summary.

Honestly, wasn’t anyone the least bit suspicious when the conviction came just before the election? Stevens said at the time that he believed the charges would be dropped. Looks like he was right. Unfortunately, he believed that the people of Alaska would believe in him even though he had been convicted, and on that point he was wrong.

Hmmm. Politically motivated prosecution involving huge levels of prosecutorial misconduct timed to affect a U.S. Senate race, that eventually sees all charges dropped.

Sounds like Democrat dirty tricks.

Palin’s right. The election was tainted because everybody believed Stevens must be guilty if he had been convicted. The result might have been different otherwise.

No, of course Begich will not resign. But that doesn’t mean it’s not a good idea to ask him to. Let him be the one to explain why he’s hanging on to a seat he probably did not win fairly.

Make no mistake: this is a game-changer. The people who believed Stevens was guilty because he was convicted will now wonder if the whole trial was political, and designed only to elect another Democrat.

By calling for Begich to resign and have a special election, Palin calls attention to that question.

More fuzzy headed thinking from the ditzy Sarah Palin.

Once we’re done with Obama we won’t be crying out for someone who is essentially a right wing Obama in drag.

Ares on April 3, 2009 at 3:10 AM

Should also mention, a lot of commentators here are acting as if Palin is trying to force Begich to resign. She has no such power. If he does resign, she doesn’t even have the power to appoint a replacement. The vacancy can only be filled by a special election.

So all Palin can do is say that he really should resign and run again. You may disagree, but it’s hardly a shocking or incomprehensible position.

ThereGoesTheNeighborhood on April 3, 2009 at 3:22 AM

Er, didn’t Sarahcuda call on Stevens to step down after he was convicted last fall, before the appeals process had wound its way through the courts? Why is she willing to give him the benefit of the doubt now when she wasn’t before?

Gee, I wonder what changed? Maybe the dismissing of all charges, with prejudice? Maybe the vast prosecutorial misconduct?

Are we better off with Stevens gone? Maybe, though I tend to believe the Democrats are just as prone to pork and corruption as Republicans, and can get away with more since they’re in the majority. So I don’t know that Stevens would be worse than Begich.

ThereGoesTheNeighborhood on April 3, 2009 at 3:34 AM

According to the AP and KTUU-Alaska it is “the Alaska Republican Party is calling on Democratic Sen. Mark Begich to resign to allow for a special election.

A special election would allow Alaskans “the chance to vote for a Senator without the improper influence of the corrupt Department of Justice,” said Alaska GOP Chairman Randy Ruedrich in a letter sent early Thursday morning.

Gov. Sarah Palin endorsed the idea of a special election in a separate statement and says she absolutely agrees.”

So for all you commenters who are criticizing Palin because she thinks she can force Begich to resign, you are wrong. As other commenters have stated, she has no power to do so. She is only stating her support for the Alaska GOP’s position in this matter. Why are conservatives bashing Palin for supporting the GOP when if the shoe were on the other foot the Democrats would be protesting and screaming for a special election?

Has everyone forgotten about how the Democrats are always insisting the 2000 election was stolen by Bush which led to a lot of the vitriole and hatred directed at him? How about the Minn. Senate elections? Why can’t conservatives support the Alaska GOP and Sarah when they decide to play hardball with the Democrats? Conservatives won’t win by playing nice as McCain’s campaign should prove.

I would expect to see some of your comments at HuffPo.

dakine on April 3, 2009 at 1:16 AM

Weren’t you banned for making a derogatory remark in reference to the Governor?

It’s the hit and run trolls.

She obviously knows that Begich won’t resign but it’s not a bad political move at this point because it would gain her some points with many alaskans. By doing this, she also casts Begich as an illegitimate candidate weakening him in the eyes of many in Alaska (2014?). It’s a given that Begich had no chance against Stevens If these federal charges were never brought forward.

TimeTraveler on April 3, 2009 at 5:38 AM

Remember when Sarah Palin’s narrative was that she “took on the old boys network in the Republican party in her state.” I remember that talking point being repeated over and over and over again during the campaign. I bet the Palin fans out there have like muscle memory from saying it so much. And yet here she is backing up one of the most corrupt senators in history who was part of the old boys network in Alaska’s GOP. The oldest boy in fact and the one who really created the culture of corruption there. Now even Palin is undoing her own narratives, doesn’t need the MSM anymore.

DeathToMediaHacks on April 3, 2009 at 6:30 AM

It was not her narrative, it was true, Sarah Palin did take on the old boys network. And by the way, considering the number of outright liars, thieves, swindlers and incompetents on your own side of the aisle, why do you care what this woman said. Go clean your own house.

Dear Obama say it ain’t so. Palin actually believed what the DOJ said! She took the word of government officals!

Well so did I. I was actually happy when Stevens got booted. I was wrong for believing my government. Sarah was wrong too.

Now we’ve got an American citizen removed from his job due to lies perpetrated by government officials. It’s a good thing this crime didn’t happen to me, because I doubt I have the resources to defend myself.

Anyone a bit scared by this yet?

Exit question if Stevens was a border agent would he still be in jail?

Newagegop on April 3, 2009 at 8:37 AM

You can’t unring the bell. Having said that, while removing Stevens makes the Senate a better place, it’s hardly clear that adding Begich is a positive thing for Alaska, or the nation.

I’d also say that Palin has a long way to go before she catches up to Keith Olbermann in calling for resignations.

Right. He was convicted and only escaped his prison time due to government ineptitude. If Stevens cared about the party he would have stepped aside before November to allow another Republican to get the senate seat.

Seems like a bad move by Palin, unless she feels the need to appeal to Stevens supporters in her re-election bid. From a national standpoint Stevens is history and will be remembered for his misuse of government power and the people’s money. It’s the last thing the GOP wants to be associated with.

Considering how pissed off I’ve been at the antics of the democrat party, which they always get away with, you could be right. It absolutely disgusts me that they get away with everything in the book including murder. As far as you are concerned though, your own version of mob mentality profoundly disgusts me also. America is a nation of laws, the Bush prosecutors have been caught breaking those in the case of Stevens, and I will be counted amongst those who believe it is better for a guilty man to go free than an innocent one to be convicted. Thanks to those prosecutors we must not convict as they definitely couldn’t convict Stevens honestly. There are reasons for that. We don’t know what those were.

You don’t believe in the rule of law. I see no reason you shouldn’t be called on it.

Can you find a precedent in U.S. history where something like this has happened? Do you think Stevens will be successful in a lawsuit against the Justice Department?

Stevens was convicted by a jury based on the evidence. It sounds like someone from the government may need to go to jail, but that nothing has come up to clear Stevens of his wrong doing.

dedalus on April 3, 2009 at 10:26 AM

Blago did nothing that other Dim governors don’t do. They just do it more subtlely.

Speedwagon82 on April 3, 2009 at 10:30 AM

IMHO, this is a tough call for Palin. When Stevens was (apparently) convicted, and had a reputation as a porker, and Palin was the VP candidate and railing against the “Bridge to Nowhere”, she had to denounce him in order to maintain credibility in her VP campaign with McCain. The problem was, Stevens had already won the Republican primary, and couldn’t be replaced by another candidate under Alaska law.

Now that Stevens has been exonerated, and Palin knows that Begich won the election based on a spurious prosecution, she can state this fact and “ask” for Begich’s resignation, knowing full well that he will not resign.

Of course, not everybody obeys state laws after they’re indicted. Bob Torricelli had won his Dem primary in NJ before being accused of corruption, and was behind badly in the polls, yet Democrats switched in Frank Lautenberg well after the legal deadline, and Lautenberg won election in 2002 and re-election in 2008.

This isn’t the first time that spurious indictments and/or prosecutions have forced people out of office. Tom DeLay was indicted (after three tries with various grand juries) as a co-conspirator in a money-laundering scheme, but after resigning his House seat, has he been convicted yet? No!!!

Then there were the allegations that candidate Ryan in the 2004 IL Senate race wanted to force his wife to have sex in public, and he stepped down, and the seat was won by a then-unknown Barack Obama. Now that the former Governor of that state has been indicted, who knows where this will lead? Senator Burris needs to watch his “six”, because Fitz might be on his tail…

Then, of course, there was the indictment of Bush 41 Secretary Caspar Weinberger right before the 1992 election, won by Bill Clinton, after which Weinberger was acquitted. Clinton did not resign, despite the fact that he himself was indicted six years later…

We also saw Congressman William Jefferson caught by the FBI with $90K of “cold cash” in his freezer, yet even Dennis Hastert defended him–how dare the FBI raid a Congressman’s house? Jefferson won that election, but lost the following one…

We also heard that the former Governor of New York was caught with a prostitute (after prosecuting prostitutes as Attorney General), and he resigned. Senator David Vitter also admitted being with a prostitute, and is still in the Senate.

As for Palin, it’s probably a meaningless gesture. Begich won’t resign, and Palin knows it. As the saying goes, you can indict a ham sandwich, but Stevens had plenty of pork behind him. This will probably be soon forgotten, and Palin will probably be re-elected Governor in 2010.

Yes, it was a meaningless gesture on Sarah’s part. What is even more surprising than the content to some onlookers is that she would even resort to a ‘meaningless gesture’? That’s how high a ‘puritanical’ standard we hold Sarah to. Perhaps Sarah’s followers should become a little more earthy about Sarah’s motivations. After all when it said and done Sarah is still a politician. We fool ourselves if we think otherwise.

technopeasant on April 3, 2009 at 10:57 AM

By calling for Begich to resign and have a special election, Palin calls attention to that question.

ThereGoesTheNeighborhood on April 3, 2009 at 2:56 AM

I keep telling people that Sarah knows what the hell she is doin.

Begich is now tainted and if Sarah does not run for POTUS in 2012, she gets to waltz over Begich’s corpse on her way to the US Senate in 2014.

Begich is a one-termer now.

Not only that, the Cuda has helped to patch it up a little with the Stevens crowd and the Alaska GOP. Not bad for what, less than 100 words.

She makes it look easy too.

Sarah Palin is so stupid that after withdrawing from the battlefield of national politics for 4 months she, through SarahPAC, apparently is the leading fundraiser among the potential GOP Presidential candidates in 2012, with much of that money being siphoned off by her from donors who previously gave primarily to the RNC. Boy is Sarah really stupid.

And regarding Sarah ‘having a hard time keeping her mouth shut’ if that is not a complete distortion of what has happened in the last 4 months nothing is. For your information Monkei, Sarah Palin is constrained by the ethics legislation in Alaska to what she can address. Has she appeared on any national radio or TV programs in the last 4 months? No. Has she made a major political speech tailored to the concerns of the lower 48 during that period? No. Did Sarah Palin speak to or criticize the GOP House or Senate members in relation to their opposition to Obama? No.

I would submit instead that Sarah Palin is cunning like a fox and superbly reticent and Stoic while she keeps her powder dry.

technopeasant on April 3, 2009 at 11:12 AM

It’s the last thing the GOP wants to be associated with.

dedalus on April 3, 2009 at 10:00 AM

Sarah was right on like usual. She stood up for uncle Ted without giving up anything, and permanently wounded Begich so that in 2014 any GOP candidate including Sarah can bring him down.

The woman is running for a second term as governor and NOBODY, not even Ted is gonna stop her. Will she run for POTUS? Who knows? That will depend on how Obama does.

But she is positioning for US Senate in 2014 IF she decides not to run for POTUS in 2012.

She probably secured her future in Alaska if there were any doubts, and if the lower 48 don’t want her she’ll watch it burn in the horizon, from her house.

the_nile on April 3, 2009 at 11:17 AM

Cuda should spend some time checking in on her children so they dont

a) get knocked up by the local self-described “bad boy of high school hockey) while listening to Iron Maiden in the back seat of a chevy Malibu.

b) go on national TV and declare that to expect high school kids to be celibate is “just not realistic”.

It probably isnt realistic for the trailer park mentality, but those of us who raise children properly, they stay virginic until holy matrimony.

Its all about caring about your kids more than lying about the Bridge to Nowhere. Its about priorities.

She cant stop the Jihadists and the globalists if she cant even stop the local Mr. Bad Boy High School Hockey Player from knocking up her high school daughter.

Poor kid…never been taught and never had a role model to follow (Sarah was knocked up when she got married too).

It’s a very good tactical move on her part. She knows full well that Begich will not resign his seat and that she can’t force him to–that’s not the point here. The point of the exercise was to once again showcase the Democratic tactics of intimidation and misuse of the judicial system to sway an election. Granted, Stevens was corrupt–but the whole dropping of his case just smells so foul here.

As for those who insist on underestimating her–well, they can go right on ahead–it’ll be fun watching their reaction when that steamroller hits them.

It was that they were taught…not just by words but by example….that premarital intimacy is a horrible decision that could really screw up your life. When I say be example, our children can count to 9 and, thus, are very aware that they were born well after 9 months of our holy matrimony….unlike the Sarah Palin clan.

Stevens was convicted by a jury based on the evidence. It sounds like someone from the government may need to go to jail, but that nothing has come up to clear Stevens of his wrong doing.

dedalus on April 3, 2009 at 10:26 AM

If you can’t bother to follow a link to get to the truth, then you probably shouldn’t be so quick in your condemnations. I hope you are never wrongly accused of any criminality, but the way things are going in this country, you just never know.

Stevens would win a landslide if there was another election held this month.

Regardless if it happens or not; I think this was a brilliant move by Palin. She will win in a landslide in 2010, only three national govenors are currently at 60%+ approval ratings; and Palin is one of them.

Btw, Sanford has dropped below 50% approval…

So Sapwolf, Matt Helm and I make cogent points regarding Sarah and her comments of Begich and instead of dealing with the subject of the thread you make ad hominem attacks not on Sarah which would be gross enough but on Sarah’s daughter who probably couldn’t care less about the futures of Ted Stevens or Mark Begich.

This is the worst aspect of Fascism: irrational attacks that are offered only to inflame and incite discontent and divisions, foment ridicule and degradation and promote contempt and animosity.

You and your ilk are out to destroy Sarah Palin. Admit it. You couldn’t care less about the the love life of Levi and Bristol. With you their tale of passionate teenage love is only a means to an end, and that end for you is to play the part of the Roman soldiers who pierce Sarah’s side to draw blood and break her bones while she stands before the world mocked and crucified as millions of catcalls and several pounds of rotten fruit rain down at her, as if vaudeville still existed, while she slowly approaches her last breath and guarantees your Messiah’s permanent reign over America.

Oh wow. That was sick. Cuda aint the Savior, dude. You will find out over the next few years.

That punk just revealed that Cuda knew that her high school daughter was sexually active with that high school hockey player. Any good mom, wouldve shipped their under-age high school daughter to live with the grandparents or to some relative in the lower 48 rather than allow the INEVITABLE pregnancy occur. Face it…she is a lousy mother.

The Wall on April 3, 2009 at 11:58 AM

Bristol Palin is not my ideal of a female teenage values. I’m not arguing that. I suspect she has always been the disappointing one in the Palin family. From personal experience, I know the eldest daughters tend to be the most disappointing to their parents. But to harp on it when there are so many bigger problems is ridiculous. The only difference between her and the average teenage girl is that she got pregnant from it.

Speedwagon82 on April 3, 2009 at 11:59 AM

Hmmm…. interesting…

Looks like some left wing website sent their people over here to put down Palin…

As to the issue…

She’s agreeing with the Alaska Republican party… she did NOT come out with this statement on her own… no big speech, she was ASKED if she agreed.

The Alaska Repubs however are playing this smart… either the Senator does not resign… and is tainted… or he does, Stevens then pleads old age, and the Repubs run someone else… best of both worlds…

Several months ago a poster on HA compared 25 similar traits and biography of Hitler to Obama. I and millions of Americans should have been paying closer attention at the time.

Like Hitler and his Nazi thugs, our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents learned, there is no compromise with Fascism, no reasoning with it, no compromise it will accept, and no stopping their thirst for power and with that power the complete devaluation and dimunition of the individual and the individual human spirit.

You and your fellow trolls have exposed your true colors. Like our ancestors did in WW II we will be relentless and defeat you and demand nothing less than an unconditional surrender.
