Palin to Begich: Resign and face Stevens again in a new election

posted at 8:40 pm on April 2, 2009 by Allahpundit

Not going to happen, but no harm in trying:

Palin’s call came after a reporter at the Fairbanks News Miner emailed her a copy of a statement by Alaska Republican Party Chairman Randy Ruedrich calling for Begich to step down.

Asked for her response, Palin simply wrote back: “I absolutely agree.”

When the reporter wrote back to confirm that Palin meant she’d like to see Begich resign in order to hold a special election, the governor responded: “Yes.”

In an email to POLITICO, Palin spokeswoman Meg Stapleton confirmed the governor’s position. “She absolutely agrees that there should be a special election,” Stapleton wrote. “Stepping down to hold the special election would be the right thing to do.”

In the statement Palin was provided, Ruedrich said that “the only reason Mark Begich won the election in November is because a few thousand Alaskans thought that Sen. Ted Stevens was guilty of seven felonies.”

Begich says he’s not going anywhere. Er, didn’t Sarahcuda call on Stevens to step down after he was convicted last fall, before the appeals process had wound its way through the courts? Why is she willing to give him the benefit of the doubt now when she wasn’t before? And what exactly is the theory of unfairness here? As I recall, he was prosecuted by Bush’s DOJ, not a Democrat’s. Like the boss says, Stevens was a pork-guzzling corruptocrat even if his corruption didn’t rise to the level of a criminal offense. Aren’t we better off rid of him?

I thought Palin has “taken on” Stevens? I thought she was the enemy of the corrupt Alaska GOP? Palin just isn’t what she was presented to be. That’s why she was such an electoral dud in 2008.

Problematic to say the least. She shouldn’t have touched it.

Like the boss says, Stevens was a pork-guzzling corruptocrat even if his corruption didn’t rise to the level of a criminal offense. Aren’t we better off rid of him?

Sure, along with about 95% of both houses of Congress.

Correct me if I’m wrong here, but wasn’t he let off the hook due to prosecutorial misconduct? From what I could tell he still committed crimes.

I used to laugh at the black voters that kept reelecting people like Maxine Waters and Laura Richardson. Then the Alaska GOP renominated Ted Stevens.

Not gonna effect my vote in 2012, but this is pointless grandstanding. Everyone knows it’s not going to happen, so why bother?

Trent1289 on April 2, 2009 at 8:49 PM

Ridiculous. Steven’s should have stepped down and let another Republican run. This idea that people have some right to hold on to their office is ridiculous. It should go to the best qualified person.

Yeah…who needs him?

Who cares if we cant filibuster the next marxist that Obama nominates for the Supreme Court.

Who cares if we cant filibuster the ruination of our country due to marxist tax and spend policies.

After all…Steven did what most other politicians do, so, who needs him?

Who needs the USA to stay free anyway? Who needs it?

Speaking as an Alaskan, there are two things we think about up here: 1) The federal govt. owns a majority of our land that we cannot develop as a consequence; they promised to build infrastructure if we became a state, a promise that has never been fulfilled. Stevens tried his best to get the dollars we were promised when we voted to join the union. 2) The earmark process is completely broken and corrupt and Stevens took advantage of that for more than just Alaska’s interests. That said, he was more conservative than not and a fighter that never took crap from democrats. He was politically targeted for the purpose of taking a senate seat and giving it to a democrat. Gov. Palin just calls it like she sees it with the information at hand.

Stevens to step down after he was convicted last fall, before the appeals process had wound its way through the courts? Why is she willing to give him the benefit of the doubt now when she wasn’t before?

Because it distracted Stevens from doing his job and gave the party a black eye ? Now that Stevens is cleared she has every right to say step back up Ted.

William Amos on April 2, 2009 at 8:57 PM

Yeah, this is dumb. Its not that Stevens was innocent, just that the prosecutors had a few improprieties that would have resulted in disbarment for them, and the Stevens found not guilty.

Begich is not a flaming lefty anyways, probably one of the more conservative Dems, and probably to the right of some of the Republicans.

As I recall, he was prosecuted by Bush’s DOJ, not a Democrat’s.

Don’t make the same logical error as the Democrats!

Government is not one god-like President waving his/her/its hand/paw and having things happen.

It is a vast machinery made up of lots of little people doing their thing.

The government doesn’t work like Donitz navy or Boskone. Once the conviction of Stevens was launched, Bush was stuck. If he intervened, then he would have been “saving a crook”.

Government is a system, not a god-like individual.

benny shakar on April 2, 2009 at 9:08 PM

There should be a new election, since the last was tainted by government misconduct.

(Unless you want representatives to be destroyed by similar “legal” moves, and then have the lawbreaking judicial actors “apologize” after the damage is done, and their “apology” is meaningless, as far as power in the Congress goes.)

The character of the politician is irrelevent to this scummy tactic.

It can be used to ruin anyone.

profitsbeard on April 2, 2009 at 9:08 PM

I believe that Palin’s position on Stevens was that he should have stepped down in time for the Republicans to field a better candidate. She wasn’t saying on Nov 1 that Republicans should vote for Begich or boycott the election.

I’m no fan of Stevens, but I don’t claim to know the truth about him – as many here seem to. My general impression is that, if he’s truly corrupt, it’s penny ante compared to the everyday, perfectly legal self-dealing that goes on in DC, the famous revolving door that allows leading figures of both parties to enrich themselves beyond most of our imagination with richly remunerated positions on corporate boards or as lobbyists, before returning to power as appointees or even through re-election.

I don’t see a great need for Palin to get involved on this flight of fancy, but reminding voters and Begich himself that he holds a Republican seat is a good thing.

the_nile on April 2, 2009 at 9:12 PM

Did you people read about what happened to Stevens.

The FBI agent slept with the chief witness against him and coached his testimony. They knew that Stevens had written to make sure he paid for all the cost of the renovation to make sure he wasn’t Rankowskied (which he was). They sat on this information while inflating the supposed cost from 60,000 to 250,000.

The people from the FBI and Justice should go to jail themselves.

Now Stevens was responsible for pork to Alaska without a doubt. But this case that lost him the election was pure fraud. Heads should roll and it looks to me like Bush was somehow convinced to work for the Democrats the last two or three years he was in office. There is scant evidence that he had the interest of the GOP in mind.

It sickens me the way Bush pushed for Nationalization of Banks and Immigration reform. He really paved the way for Obama.

“didn’t Sarahcuda call on Stevens to step down after he was convicted last fall, before the appeals process had wound its way through the courts? ”

Of course. Because at that moment, he was a convicted criminal. The right thing to do for a member of Congress who is convicted of a crime is to step down. Heck, some even do it before conviction, just indictment is enough to make many step down.

“Why is she willing to give him the benefit of the doubt now when she wasn’t before?”

Because the charges have been dropped and he is no longer a convicted criminal. It should now be up to the people to decide. Sounds like fair play to me.

BS. Michelle et. al. are misinformed.

Stevens paid for the work on his chalet at Alyeska at the going rate at the time. The prosecution determined that it should have cost more, based on inflated numbers. Stevens declared gifts, not things he paid for. That was the law. He followed it.

The case against him was bolstered by the testimony of the ex-head of VECO, who himself had already been convicted of any number of federal crimes. They offered him a lighter sentence to say Stevens did something wrong. Anyone smell a rat there?

Prosecutorial misconduct is the least of the issues here. Noticed that as soon as the seat went to a democrat, charges were conveniently dropped. They were a load of horsecrap to begin with.

Ted Stevens was a good servant to the people of Alaska. No other state puts up with so much crap from the federal government, preventing them from developing, drilling, and otherwise using their own natural resources. Stevens brought home the money that replaced the income Alaska was prevented from collecting.

But hey, don’t let the facts get in the way of your kneejerk condemnation. Let’s all act like the DailyKos and burn him on the internet in effigy, since we’ve all been fed the party line. /sarc off

Good call Sarah! It is the Alaska GOP along with Sarah asking Begich to stand for a special election. If Stevens was a Democratic Senator and Begich was a Republican, the MSM, DNC and Obama White House would be screaming for Begich’s head. Some of the Democrats in Alaska and nationwide were saying Palin should be impeached over Troopergate and she didn’t do anything illegal or improper? Why should Republicans just roll over all the time?

This at least puts Begich “under a cloud” and in a negative light for the time he is in office and can be used against him when he runs in 2016. It looks like Stevens was targeted. The feds could have waited until after the election was over to charge him then it wouldn’t have been a factor in Stevens’ loss.

Correction: When she runs for the Senate against Begich in 2014 and trounces him.

People, the lady knows what she is doin. She’s GOP.

Thanks! Correction noted.

Yep. Although I’m no fan of big pork Stevens, the case against him was also weak apparently due to a female (for sure Obama voting) FBI agent f’in around with one of the witnesses.

Come on, let the old fart free.

Sapwolf on April 2, 2009 at 9:30 PM

I am no fan of Stevens but the truth is that he would have won his relection bid if not for what the just.dept did to him.I belive in fair elections no mater who is running. We all know that Begich will not resign but now his election is tainted. He will be known as the Sen.who won with the help of the just. dept.

That’s Mudflats. They are a bunch of whackjobs and most people know that.

Even DKOS says she will be re-elected if she runs again for governor.

Pie? I want a piece of pie…
I will be honest, I think cuda should have stayed out of this. Just because the prosecutors were playing grab ass doesn’t mean that Stevens in the wrong.

Sarah Palin calls for a special election while the Messiah fires the head of GM.

What do you think is more egregious?

Please keep everything in perspective.

Bingo. Begich is now tainted like Murkowski was tainted after he made his daughter Senator.

Now if the Cuda don’t run for POTUS in 2012, guess who she is gunnin for in 2014. Begich’s head is in the Cuda’s scope now and boy is she smilin. It ain’t gonna be moose for dinner this time.

Sapwolf on April 2, 2009 at 9:39 PM

Like the boss says, Stevens was a pork-guzzling corruptocrat even if his corruption didn’t rise to the level of a criminal offense. Aren’t we better off rid of him?

Not like this.

If he had been defeated fair and square without a politically motivated indictment and prosecutors who willfully tried to deny him a fair trial, then I’d say yes. But I’m not willing to overlook that kind of an abuse of prosecutorial power no matter how pork-addicted Stevens was.

But I’m sure if Republicans had won a seat this way you’d be condemning it, worried sick about our image.

Redstate said it best yesterday
. Money quote:

The second thing is that I have to note that Achance, again, was right. Republicans, in a bid to appear as white as the driven snow, have been tricked, again and again, into committing fratricide. For all that Obama can give the world lessons in throwing people under the bus once they become inconvenient, Republicans are hardly slouches. All it takes is an accusation, a news headline and the entire concept of “innocent until proven guilty” is thrown out the window in a rush to condemn and disassociate (as if the MSM would ever forget to attach the big scarlet ‘R’).

Yeah, Stevens was a real joke — most Senate Republicans are these days.

*Sigh*. I like Sarah but am now not too impressed with her or her staff, for that matter. Hopefully she can win me back before 2012. Go on, throw your stones at me.

Strange how when Alaska is ever mentioned here hundreds of posters are either “Alaskans” or experts on Alaska. I suppose this has been happening here at HA for years, you should rename this site Hot Alaska since the other 49 states are hardly ever mentioned.

callingallcomets on April 2, 2009 at 9:27 PM

Oddly enough, real people do live in Alaska, and even have computers with internet access. What is strange is how completely ignorant most folks are about Alaska.

But everyone is entitled to their own opinions.

The kossacks are just as retarded as you guyz.
I greif on them too.

But you guyz are way funnier….so whiny and delusional, and the selfparodies! and the victimology!
The Beck and Breitbart show really brings teh funnie.
It was kinda fun to grief on Michael Moore, but now you have John Zeigler, and hes even more hilarious!
And Palin…..shes a gold mine of hilarity.
And you guyz get all pissy and jacked up every time someone disses her.
ineffable sweetness.

I would like Palin to be our champion in the Senate much like Ted K. is to the Democrats. We don’t have many Senate heroes these days that can grab headlines and who works behalf of the party faithful.

Begich is just a seat-warmer for 2014, when a Republican wins back the seat, like say, oh, I don’t know, Sarah Palin? *fingers crossed*

Dave From Canada on April 2, 2009 at 9:45 PM

Exactly. While Stevens still committed those crimes, he is technically innocent due to the prosecutor withholding relevant evidence.

How can you say with any certainty he’s guilty of any felony when the prosecution withheld evidence that could have exonerated him? That’s like saying the Duke Lacrosse Players got off on a technicality, but truly were guilty.

Sheesh, do people know what exculpatory evidence is?
