NYT complains about Obama “muzzle”

posted at 1:32 pm on April 2, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Apparently, the love affair between Barack Obama and the mainstream media may be mostly unrequited.  New York Times reporter Helene Cooper complained yesterday at The Caucus that Obama tried to blow off reporters after taking only six questions.  Cooper uses a particularly scornful tone in reporting on the snub:

Is President Obama trying to muzzle his press corps? …

Mr. Obama even tried to cut off the press conference after six questions had been asked—most dealing with the growing rift between the United States and the rest of the world over how to fix the global economy. “All right?” he asked, in an “O.K.-we’re-done-I’m-outta-here” way.

Mr. Brown was having none of that. As Mr. Obama made to leave, Mr. Brown exercised his host’s privilege and called on George Pascoe-Watson, from a tabloid, The Sun. He may have regretted that though, because Mr. Pascoe-Watson asked Mr. Obama if he had any advice that would help Mr. Brown, whose poll numbers are in the basement, to win re-election.

Responding in a fashion that would make Miss America proud, Mr. Obama said that Mr. Brown needed to stay true to himself, so “you can wake up and look at yourself in the mirror. And that,” he concluded, “is the kind of integrity that Gordon Brown has shown in the past and will continue to show in the future.”

Cooper includes the video of the presser.  You decide whether this …

… looks anything like this? I mean, can’t a man just eat his waffle?

Has the press discovered that their love affair will be decidedly unidirectional, now that Obama won the election? Or will they actually realize that it was unidirectional all along, but that their infatuation blinded them to this, as well as several other truths about Barack Obama that have become clear from the fumbling, bumbling start to his presidency?

Naaaaaah.

Well, at least she admits that they are Obama’s press corps.

The press should be not only a collective propagandist and a collective agitator, but also a collective organizer of the masses. – Vladimir Ilyich Lenin

The NYT should know this by now.

Meet the new boss same as the old boss.

Obama needed the press to get elected. Now their questions get in the way of O getting his way.

dedalus on April 2, 2009 at 1:35 PM

Or will they actually realize that it was unidirectional all along, ?

unfortunately no, because the vast majority of the “journalists” in the MSM will never admit anything but complete objectivity…

max1 on April 2, 2009 at 1:35 PM

And that is the kind of integrity that Gordon Brown has shown in the past and will continue to show in the future

Note to Obama: Don’t endorse candidates in foreign elections.

Better answer: “I think that would be interfering with the government of our friends in the UK, so I’m not going to get into that.”

Since they haven’t gotten any bailout money (yet), aren’t they still free to report on anything they choose?

Asking Obama questions that they know exactly how he’ll answer hardly seems like something any of them should be spending much time on.

I think that the press still have a few more months before they really get the point. You know, like that stalker boyfriend/girlfriend you had in your twenties, who just had to keep hanging on. Obambi will use and abuse them for a while longer, before they realize they are in a classic “enabler” relationship.

I’m not sure why they really care about this at all (well, I’m not sure how many actually do, other than an handful). The MSM stopped reporting ‘news’ many years ago…so Obama doesn’t actually need to say anything anyway. The can just continue to manufacture miraculous stuff out of whole cloth based on the scraps he gives them…though, I admit that takes more work than just reporting facts. Maybe that’s why they are complaining about it.

The MSM is suffering from “Battered Journalists Syndrome.” They keep getting abused by The One, but they’re afraid to leave, believing that it’s their fault because they don’t love him enough. Abusers don’t change and their victims need years of therapy to recover, if they escape from their abuser before it’s too late.

Actually, victims such as you describe believe they are abused because there is something they are not doing right or not doing enough of, even thought their efforts to win approval may look absolutely bizarre to an outsider.

Knucklehead on April 2, 2009 at 2:04 PM

Reading all the stories on the msm’s, and their glowing reports daily on their pride, and affirmations on all things Obama, I can’t help but see it, as the msm’s see themselves as the parents, and Obama their child.

They beam with pride, no matter what he does. Good, or bad. Whether they agree, or disagree privately, their public persona will always be, the proud parent.

If I were Obama, I’d find this insulting. They never saw Obama as a man who ran on his merits. More of the msm’s way of saying…see? We’re good parents…and we’re not racist, and look at our baby go!

Just my opinion here, but that is always in my mind, when I read these articles. Unfortunately for these msm’s….Obama will only acknowledge them, when he needs them, and no otherwise. Kind of like the rebellious teenager telling mom, and dad to get off his back.
