NYT complains about Obama “muzzle”

posted at 1:32 pm on April 2, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Apparently, the love affair between Barack Obama and the mainstream media may be mostly unrequited.  New York Times reporter Helene Cooper complained yesterday at The Caucus that Obama tried to blow off reporters after taking only six questions.  Cooper uses a particularly scornful tone in reporting on the snub:

Is President Obama trying to muzzle his press corps? …

Mr. Obama even tried to cut off the press conference after six questions had been asked—most dealing with the growing rift between the United States and the rest of the world over how to fix the global economy. “All right?” he asked, in an “O.K.-we’re-done-I’m-outta-here” way.

Mr. Brown was having none of that. As Mr. Obama made to leave, Mr. Brown exercised his host’s privilege and called on George Pascoe-Watson, from a tabloid, The Sun. He may have regretted that though, because Mr. Pascoe-Watson asked Mr. Obama if he had any advice that would help Mr. Brown, whose poll numbers are in the basement, to win re-election.

Responding in a fashion that would make Miss America proud, Mr. Obama said that Mr. Brown needed to stay true to himself, so “you can wake up and look at yourself in the mirror. And that,” he concluded, “is the kind of integrity that Gordon Brown has shown in the past and will continue to show in the future.”

Cooper includes the video of the presser.  You decide whether this …

… looks anything like this? I mean, can’t a man just eat his waffle?

Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy

Has the press discovered that their love affair will be decidedly unidirectional, now that Obama won the election? Or will they actually realize that it was unidirectional all along, but that their infatuation blinded them to this, as well as several other truths about Barack Obama that have become clear from the fumbling, bumbling start to his presidency?

Naaaaaah.

Yup and “not the president of uhhhh China, uhhhhh Japan, uhhhhh and the other countries here at the summit” Well 2 out of 20 aint bad.

MDWNJ on April 2, 2009 at 2:24 PM

Did any one just pick up on his answer to Jake Tappers question about will the policies at this summit stop a recession or a depression. Obama said well we cant give guarantees, because we know that from the people at AIG. So is he saying he and the rest at the G20 are just like the AIG exec’s. Or that the only thing different between him and the AIG people, is he wont guarantee anything.

Ares on April 2, 2009 at 2:54 PM

The press corps usually asks such stupid leading questions it really is no big deal. Obama of course is the first President who has ever been able to get away with this. The press corps sucks and are really getting what they deserve and have earned over many years of obnoxious behavior. I am not a supporter of Obama and can’t understand how he has fooled so many people but I do have to say he is using his immunity from mass media attach to stick it to many deserving people not only in the press corps but to others that have earned it over the years. This is the only thing about this President that makes me smile occasionally between his lies, his ignorance of history, his arrogance and drive to socialism in his time.

rsl775 on April 2, 2009 at 2:56 PM

The degree of skepticism expressed by the M.S.M. may depend on how many personal skeletons they have in their closet. If Obama’s team can trash private citizens like Rush, or Joe the Plumber, they can trash journalists too. Or their families. They have a shovel-ready proxy army trained and ready to dig for dirt.

A New York Times complaint about Obama in a blog post is a little different than a series of critical/snarky/borderline libelous Page 1 stories day after day, in the Sarah Palin mode. When that starts happening, then you’ll know the love affair between the media and the president is over.

Really – a Presidential press corps? That’s so… american. What we REALLY need is a WORLD press corps. A global press corps would be much more understanding, and help spread global justice throught the world, and not ask questions unless Obama had given the questions to them beforehand.

Seriously. Cooper is going to get miffed NOW? Her newspaper spiked a story about Obama’s relationship with ACORN, ran several nasty stories about the GOP candidate, whom they chose, and totally ignored Obama’s lack of experience, candor, or defining principles. You wanted to elect the empty suit, you live with the consequences. Suffer with the rest of us, Helene. Nobody will ask the questions America wants, so why should your trivial softballs be suffered by the One?

They NY Times and WaPo staff should roll down to the nearby monuments to “overseas contingency operations”. Because there IS right and wrong in the world. And the REAL bad guys, the ones who we’re letting out of GITMO, and their friends, have already promised a big surprise for us.

What did Europe’s love affair with Obama get us? More help to fight the “real war” in Afghanistan? Help with Iran? No. For all the bluster about Obama bringing the world together, the rest of the planet still wants America to fail.

The truly sad part? I think Obama might want us to fail, too.

Thanks to the announcement of FASB rules changes on mark-to-market. Something Obama could’ve worked on DAY ONE in office. But hell, Obama can’t even hire staff. You can’t expect him to know about economics, or diplomacy, or NCAA brackets, or protocol, or media relations ALREADY.

getalife – why not defend Obama on his campaign promises? How’s that “most ethical White House” going? How about the “no lobbyist” rule? Or the new age of transparency (would that include talking to the press?) Or the end of politics as usual (which used to be called the politics of personal destruction). The end of partisanship. Not a single dime of new taxes for 95% of Americans.

How’s Obama doing on those promises? I mean, Obama himself said he doesn’t watch the markets, and things are going to get worse. So watching the Dow isn’t evidence of anything other than restrained (free? cmon) markets at work. What’s your favorite Obama accomplishment so far?
