Manufactured outrage of the day: Huckabee jokes about letting air out of Dem’s tires

posted at 9:20 pm on April 2, 2009 by Allahpundit

A test case for the HA faithful: Do you guys hate Huck so much that you’ll hold this against him? It’s an obvious joke and, like MKH says, the guy who’s claiming to be offended has been known to do shots of rum on cable television. Ben Smith thinks it’s kind of a big deal; I think it’s kind of anything but. Exit quotation from Huck himself: “As someone who served as a Governor for 10 years, I can say if these are the type of things Terry McAuliffe worries about and make him break down and cry, then he won’t last 10 days as Governor much less four years and he doesn’t deserve the people of Virginia’s vote.”

You guys sure are touchy tonight.

The irony is that the people who should most take offense hearing that joke are Huck’s Christian supporters, but even they know it was over the top.

But to see it used to smear evangelicals as Huck’s dominionist Christianistas or whatever was along the lines of David Letterman’s cheap shots on Rush Limbaugh the other night. Now there’s one bitter old man fading fast and clinging to grade school lines to cope. It was nice to finally see him called on it. O’reilly could have been much harder on him if he wanted to. But Letterman realized he just got exposed and deserved it, so that was the end of it.

Or hadn’t you heard that Obama gave our country away today at the G20,

Knucklehead on April 2, 2009 at 10:52 PM

It hasn’t sunk in, yet. It should be the main topic, nationally, tomorrow. If not …

This is very, very bad.

progressoverpeace on April 2, 2009 at 10:55 PM

How encouraging to see a politician who’s not politically correct!

I’d still not vote for him, though.

desertdweller on April 2, 2009 at 11:08 PM

Meh. I’m with Huck on this one. Guy recycled a stupid joke. McAuliffe’s OUTRAGE seems a bit put on.

Slublog on April 2, 2009 at 11:08 PM

And they are just as outraged at lefties who actually slash tires of opponents, military recruiters….

Look, Ma. I can play the game, too.

reaganaut on April 2, 2009 at 11:13 PM

A humorless Terry McAuliffe pounces: “Let’s be clear: there are no jokes to be made about denying people the right to vote in this country. It’s not a laughing matter. This is a right that people fought and died for, so as public figures, we must be sure that we are setting the standard.”

Have you sent this memo to ACORN, Mr. McAuliffe?

Knucklehead on April 2, 2009 at 11:22 PM

Is it just me, or does the podium he is standing in front of look like a mini church pulpit? I can’t stand Huckabee, but this is just ridiculous.

I think McAuliffe needs to let a little air out of his outrage, his ego, & his head.

portlandon on April 2, 2009 at 11:24 PM

I don’t like Huck – but this is a good joke.

Hell – I’d be happy even if it wasn’t. ACORN does much worse – in order to survive one has to adapt.

Maybe he WAS NOT JOKING??

Anyway – kudos to Huck for that one.

I still think he’s a David Frum Republican though.

HondaV65 on April 2, 2009 at 11:24 PM

Huck is and always will be an idiot.

bball3212 on April 2, 2009 at 11:39 PM

Even if he was being serious, and it’s obvious to anyone with a functioning brain that he wasn’t, this is mild by comparison to what Dems have already been convicted of doing. He said, “let the air out of their tires,” not “go slash the tires of their GOTV vans at their party headquarters.”

Wingo on April 3, 2009 at 12:36 AM

Do you guys hate Huck so much that you’ll hold this against him?

Not me. It was clearly a joke and everyone knew it but it’s the kind of thing that dems and the media will use against him. I would call it an unforced error. I don’t hate Huck but I wish he could have found it in himself to drop out of the race when it became clear he had no chance to win. I voted for Romney because I thought he had more experience, a better record of success, and a more presidential demeanor than Huck.

I can’t listen to Huckabee sorry. But as far as any Democrat saying that Republicans have supressed the vote. This isn’t even a free country anymore with all the elections the Dems have stolen this year. They all learned from Washington State… now it is common practice.

petunia on April 3, 2009 at 1:27 AM

Not a big deal, but I have to wonder how Republicans would take it if a Democrat had made the joke about Republicans. Especially with the “Do the Lord’s work” bit thrown in.

RightOFLeft on April 3, 2009 at 1:49 AM

It’s strange that the execrable McAuliffe would have a problem with the idea of letting air out of voters tires; cause that’s just what Democrats did to Republicans in Wisconsin in the 2004 election:

Suspects Charged With Election Day Tire-Slashing in Wisconsin

RightOFLeft on April 3, 2009 at 1:49 AM

If a democrat had said it there would have been a companion story about 100s of cars with flat tires.

Dollayo on April 3, 2009 at 2:22 AM

Democrats slashing tires to interfere with people voting isn’t even considered a seriosu crime.

Who gives a damn about deflating tires?

malclave on April 3, 2009 at 2:54 AM

That was too funny! One thing I like about Huckabee is his sense of humor (oftentimes off color but LOL good) which we all could use a lot more of especially in politics.

Like the Rolling Stones once said, “If you can’t take a joke, then $%#@ it!” or something like that!

sarahpalinfan99 on April 3, 2009 at 3:02 AM

Huck’s joke was great. People will overreact on the left and MSM.

Do the right thing. Friends don’t let friends (or anybody) vote Dem. It was really a needed public service announcement.

sarahpalinfan99 on April 3, 2009 at 3:05 AM

I don’t know if anybody mentioned this but I think if Huckabee had not mentioned ‘Do the Lord’s Work’ in connection with letting the air out of their tires it may not have resonated. Just a thought.

technopeasant on April 3, 2009 at 3:11 AM

“Do the Lord’s work”? WTF. My father uses the same wordig. He does the “Lord’s work” every Sunday…. He’s an usher down at his local church. Ugh. I just can’t get behind The Huck. The more I hear/see of him, the less I like.

Ben Smith thinks it’s kind of a big deal

Of course the liberals at politico think it’s a big deal. I must have missed the expose they did about acorn receiving 4 billion dollars in the stimulas bill. politico has been been biased from their start up and the way they have been accepted by so called “conservative” commentators has been troubling. They went from 0 to 90 literally overnight yet no one has answered one important question; who supplied their start up money? They are argueably one of the most quoted news sources these days yet they have an obvious liberal slant. Has media matters or any of the other soros fronts ever attacked the politico? Nope.

Hate is such a strong emotion. I don’t like hating. I don’t feel good inside when I hate. So I pray. I pray for Allah to slip on a banana peel and break his neck. But hey,at least I’m praying.

Ben Smith thinks it’s kind of a big deal

You mean from the completely unbiased Politico?

Physics Geek on April 3, 2009 at 7:55 AM

Putting on my Simon Jester hat for a moment….

Even if Huck wasn’t joking, it wouldn’t work.

And McAuliffe would have a point that Republicans are trying to suppress the vote by sabotaging the vehicles

However, spray-painting the words “sucker,” “stupid,” or “moron Democrat” on any car with a McAuliffe bumper sticker, would not prevent the vehicles from being driven to the polls. And, it would be a valid expression of free speech (or street art), as practiced by ACORN. So they (and the Dems) couldn’t complain, cause that’s the sort of thing they do. And it would work. Think about it: Would you like everybody in town to know you’re a “self-admitted” idiot? Of course not. And unlike replacing the air in the tires (5 minutes with an air compressor and tank – remember, he said let the air out, not slash the tires), the “morons” (I won’t call them victims) displaying the freedom of speech artwork on their vehicles would remain on view for days.

Yes, folks, I’m just kidding. Raise your blarney shields.

georgej on April 3, 2009 at 8:05 AM

It’s a joke, nothing more.

Those who think is is offensive are the ones with deep anger and hostility.

Do you guys hate Huck so much that you’ll hold this against him?

“Hate” is such a strong word, Allah. I am personally glad that Huck didn’t get the nomination, but it wasn’t anything personal against Huck.

By the way, who did we have running that would have been more electable? The Republican party was, and still is, in shambles.

gryphon202 on April 3, 2009 at 11:32 AM

A joke makes a joke….

Huckabee, just stay back in Arkansas, please

Norwegian on April 3, 2009 at 11:44 AM

This is actually a standard stump-speech joke for Huck. I watched him give a speech for McCain-Palin in October wherein he used the very same line.

The real joke isn’t a politician with folksy humor about tire pressure. The real joke is a presidential candidate whose platform for tackling high gas prices revolved around tire pressure–or possibly the joke is on the U.S. for electing that man president in spite of this.

cackcon on April 3, 2009 at 2:30 PM

I won’t vote for Huck but that was rather entertaining. Which begs the question, “Where were all the O-bombats when dear leader was talking about getting in peoples faces who wouldn’t be voting for the messiah?”

cackcon on April 3, 2009 at 2:30 PM

The joke in the oval office is what happens when you let petulant juveniles vote.

Here is Huckabee’s response:

From CNN Political Producer Peter Hamby
Huckabee said McAuliffe is overreacting to his recent comments in Virginia.

(CNN) – Mike Huckabee shot back at Terry McAuliffe late Thursday after the former DNC chairman and Virginia gubernatorial candidate accused Huckabee of encouraging voter suppression.

“As someone who served as a Governor for 10 years, I can say if these are the type of things Terry McAuliffe worries about and make him break down and cry, then he won’t last 10 days as Governor much less four years and he doesn’t deserve the people of Virginia’s vote,” Huckabee said in a statement to CNN.
