First Lady flub: no touching the Queen
posted at 8:47 am on April 2, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
This seems to be getting a lot of traction in the headlines, so let’s talk about Michelle Obama’s supposedly grand faux pas in meeting Queen Elizabeth II in London. Time Magazine reported that the British (which include the “English”) sputtered with indignation when the First Lady touched Elizabeth’s back. The reaction seems a little exaggerated, considering the circumstances, but it still broke protocol:
The rules are set in stone, and so the eagerly watching British media sputtered when the First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, briefly put her hand on the back of Queen Elizabeth II as the two chatted at a reception. …
Of course, there are corollaries to this. One must certainly touch the Queen if the monarch offers her hand (though you should return this not with a firm handshake but just a touch). On Wednesday, Michelle Obama put her hand on the Queen only after the Queen had placed her own hand on the First Lady’s back as part of their conversation. So there is room for theological argument as to whether the American reciprocity of touch was allowable given the social dynamics of the situation. …
In any case, the touch lasted just a second or two, and the Queen did not seem particularly perturbed — though she appeared slightly surprised as she drew away.
I’m not much a fan of royalty and the pomp that accompanies the monarchy, so I tend to see this as a much lesser offense than getting the name of the country wrong. The gesture from the Queen would normally prompt a human response of reciprocation. Time’s explanation of the miraculous healing powers of the Queen’s touch is interesting from a historical perspective, but since Americans don’t tend to believe such things about monarchs (we made that clear in 1776, although the Princess Di infatuation may have confused some people), Mrs. Obama’s treatment of Elizabeth II as a mere mortal is somewhat understandable.
Of course, diplomatic protocol exists for a reason, and it’s clear Mrs. Obama didn’t adhere to it, if she ever got instruction on it in the first place. As it turns out, she might not have had it, since her husband hasn’t gotten around to staffing the White House protocol office. Apparently, no one told Barack Obama that the State Department had staff to fill the gap, either:
Only a few weeks on the job, Obama created a minor diplo-mess when British Prime Minister Gordon Brown came to the U.S. for a visit. Obama’s historic Oval Office desk, a gift from Queen Victoria to Rutherford Hayes, is made from the timbers of the HMS Resolute. Brown proudly presented Obama with a pencil holder carved from its antislavery sister ship, the HMS Gannet. Classy! Obama lamely reciprocated with a DVD set of Hollywood movies, including “Psycho.” When Brown got back home, he discovered they didn’t work in his European player. “At a minimum you don’t want to give offense,” says a former White House official who helped orchestrate foreign visits for a previous president. “That was really phoning it in.” (The official, like others quoted here, asked not to be named disparaging a sitting president.) Apparently it was a rookie mistake. According to a person close to the situation, Obama hasn’t yet appointed a chief of protocol and his staffers, still unpacking, didn’t realize that the State Department has an entire office dedicated to foreign visits.
Hiring a chief of protocol isn’t as high a priority as staffing, say, the Treasury, but the position is quite obviously critical to not looking like Ugly Americans when traveling the globe as head of state. I don’t think anyone has called this the Greatest Transition Ever in a while now. I think the bloom has left that rose, and this is just another example of the problem. Obama really had no clue as to the scope of this job.
So yes, Mrs. Obama committed a a small breach of protocol, but it’s not on the same level as the Angela Merkel back rub or replacing “Great Britain” with England.
Note: Comments copied from Headlines post.
Update: The offending gesture, from the Daily Mail:

Eh. I just can’t get terribly worked up about this, since the Queen has her arm wrapped around Mrs. Obama.

Michelle better get on a tread mill. She’s eclipsing the shot.
I’ve never been much either, for the idea, that we need to curtsey or bow, but protocol, is protocol, and if that’s what is necessary when meeting, and greeting royalty…so be it. The Obama’s better start learning, and quickly.
capejasmine on April 2, 2009 at 11:46 AM
Protocol is fine. Respect is fine. But the queen isn’t a divine being and all the artifice surrounding the royals is BS. Last I checked she was a human being, albeit a very lucky one. Much ado about nothing I think.

If the demands are unreasonable, then don’t agree to the engagement.
Why does it matter? I’m quite sure that any Muslim leader that demands excessive protocol requirements, understands the drawbacks of such requirements.
For example, if you’re going to require all meeting participants to kiss your feet prior to discussions, then you must realize that you might miss out on meetings which may be valuable for you and those you lead. Additionally, you might have to give in on other conditions in order to have your feet kissing condition met.

What about a US President bowing down before a foreign king?
Of Saufi Arabia, no less.
I don’t know what really happened here, but the picture looks really bad.
Loxodonta on April 2, 2009 at 11:57 AM
Well, you know, that would explain a lot.
But I just don’t know how anyone could be so STUPID, as to mess with foreign dignitaries without having a protocol office! And not to know the State Department has these people? That is just . . . too incompetent to believe.
Regarding touching the Queen, I’m with you, eEd. The Queen DID do it first, and “returning affection” can never be a very serious faux pas, Queen or no. Most etiquette is based on the concepts of kindness and good intention.
Not only that, but most people would probably have felt they needed to return the gesture. (And I wonder if the State Department even has any protocol on, “What to do if the Queen puts her arm around you.”)
I did have a thought, though, on reading a headline on Drudge, referencing a British newspaper saying how feted and admired Michelle is in Great Britain.
This made me think: Michelle must be undergoing a great deal of cognitive dissonance, coming as she has from a place she thinks where Americans are downright mean and she isn’t proud of her country, to a place where she represents them.
She also said in a recent interview how she’d talked to a lot of people now, and discovered they were just like her, with the same needs, and so on.
Are we witnessing a fundamental change in this woman? Is she softening? I do think she is, a bit.
But I’m also inclined to think that if enough people turned against her husband’s policies, she’d be back to her harsh world viewpoint.
Because I don’t think any of her new outlook applies to anyone who isn’t a rabid fan or a polite/friendly head of state.
Alana on April 2, 2009 at 11:57 AM
Wasn’t it Obama who requested a meeting with the Queen, rather than the other way around? And sorry guys, but real royalty is tightly bound by honour, protocol and duty, it’s not the same as Hollywood trash royalty. It’s like the “salute the office, not the man” thing.
The Obamas have no class and no manners.
Fortunata on April 2, 2009 at 12:01 PM
Well done, Ed, but I disagree with the above quote. Protocol is protocol Period. This is exactly the same as replacing Great Britain with England, German shoulder rubs, etc.
The great problem here is that Obama has consistently and abysmally failed to to his Constitutionally mandated job- representing the US- while he runs around firing private CEOs, releasing terrorists and paying off ACORN.
What is even worse is crap like this:
This behavior from the press is inexcusable. I concede that it’s not necessary for them to shout from the rooftops every time a breach of protocol occurs (unless it involved Bush) but accurate reporting is necessary.

Unlike capitulus, I actually understand the true value of years of education as a predictor of something that actually matters – job success.
Schmidt and Hunter’s classic meta-analysis (1997) places the correlation between years of education and job success at about .11. This mean years of ed. will explain about 1.2% of the variation in job success. Some predictor you’ve got there, sparky.
There have been other studies since that re-ran Schmidt and Hunter’s numbers, but I’m reasonably certain there were no significant changes in years of education as a predictor. General intelligence, job knowledge, and even personality have vastly more predictive validity.

In the intercultural field, it is general understood that you may sometimes breach protocol–on the condition that you already understand and respect the norms. It’s pretty obvious the Obama administration doesn’t comprehend savoir faire.
It’s no surprise that many folks across the pond are nonplussed to suffer their cultural traditions ignored.

Captain Ed: The photo above reminds me of a tale about Queen Victoria. At a formal dinner, an honored guest drank the water from the fingerbowl laid before him. To spare him embarrassment, Queen Victoria did the same.
The main theme is that if Laura Bush, Sarah Palin, or any other conservative woman did the same thing, “charmed” would be about the last verb the AP would select to describe the photo.

I’m impressed with the analysis. I’m sorry it’s wasted on a troll who only see’s us as white trash. He/she has been on a roll the last couple days to a week throwing every popular insult. The new vogue with liberals is not to paint us as rich old white guys but as stupid hicks from a trailer park. They never fail to amaze me with their universal hypocrisy in almost every aspect of their world view. That amazes me and of course, how quickly they change their characterization of us to suit their current argument.
I personally don’t care about this thread. It was a breach of protocol to touch the Queen first. obama should have known it and it was embarrassing. The Queen didn’t seem to have much of a cow over it so move on in my opinion. What does get me on a thread like this is any one of the current class of freshman trolls who only seem to be able to come here and throw insult after insult. Of them, Crappytitless is the most abhorrent creature I’ve ever read comments from on Hot Air; bar none. I’d ban hammer the b@tch faster than he/she could say “Hitch a ride with Ted.”
Crappy reduces the conversation to the kind of banter you hear in a bar, right before the swinging starts. But hey, that’s the new civility; I’m in. Like I said, he/she makes it easy.

From what I read, the Queen has loosened up considerably about this stuff over the past decade.
Clearly, much ado about nothing.

Let’s be honest – the Queen knew MO was from Chicago and once she saw how big MO was she may have thought she’d better be friendly – fear of a smackdown can make anyone do strange things. Who makes hostile gestures in front of a rabid dog?

Mommypundit on April 2, 2009 at 12:36 PM
I have never liked her, because she is ugly on the inside. By the same token, this is a minor slip up compared to the usual classless behavior of the Obamas. They have no use for manners, because they’re narcissists. The world revolves around them, and they have no respect for other cultures and people they feel have “kept them down.” The Queen probably did not mean, but the message is sent loud and clear to her subjects. So, she might have minded on that count.

No. The Queen would never do such a thing. Never make the mistake of thinking that the Queen has anything similar to our mental model of life rattling around her brain. They are literally a different breed. That’s why Di was so shocking to them….indeed, the future of the monarchy may well depend on William.

So, you have a BS. Any farmer can tell you what that means.
As far as my “expertise” in meth, I never claimed to be any such thing. I was just quoting what the Leftist taxpayer-funded PBS told me. If you have any quibbles with the data, take it up with them. Never tried the stuff myself, which is what your childish retort implies.
However, when I returned to Hawai’i for a visit in 2003, after not having been back for almost 4 decades, I saw a Leftist tropical paradise that had been ruined by meth, which they also call “Ice” out there. And in talking to a local cop during my visit to my old hometown of Kailua-now home to the Western White House-he told me the main reason why the state had such a bad meth epidemic.
The ultra-liberal Hawai’i Supreme Court has for years refused to let local and state law enforcement out there use the exact same methods that their Mainland counterparts have been using for years to successfully catch meth smugglers. The Hawaiian Judges claim that such methods would “invade the privacy” of the bad guys.
In other words, in this liberal paradise, the criminals have more rights than their victims do.
Del Dolemonte on April 2, 2009 at 12:47 PM
I haven’t seen anything to suggest the Queen is upset.

Classless Michelle “Patrick Ewing” Obama grabbing the Queen? Not surprised, but the Queen is an fragile 80-year old woman, she was probably petrified.

peski, that’s the attitude that suggests we not respect other cultures.
What’s making me laugh today is how the liberal sites are ALL saying that.
While bashing Bush for “offending” others at the same time.
Either your ethnocentric……or you’re not.
In this case, I’m sure it was quite benign. The Queen apparently is smitten with the idea of the Obamas. Why not?
He’s hardly evil, hardly going against our natural affinity with Britain, and…..well, anyway.
This is just as silly as people making fun of Sarah for her accent or whatever.
It’s elitism.
The queen makes it clear if she doesn’t like something. She obviously did not.
And, as I stated, from my reading?

She may be old, but obviously, she’s still changing.

In many fields, a degree is simply confirmation that its recipient was able to complete their courses over a 4 year period, and also pass examinations.
Bill Gates never got a degree. Neither did Steve Jobs. Or Albert Einstein. Or George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, or Harry Truman.
Likewise, many of our most brilliant authors never graduated college. Such as Mark Twain, William Faulkner, and Papa Hemingway.
And guess what? Queen Elizabeth never got a college degree, either. That must be why the O’bamas treated her as an inferior.
Del Dolemonte on April 2, 2009 at 1:07 PM
Are we at war with the British again?
I’ll believe that when they drop the protocol altogether. It stands, and even if the Queen had more class than to snub Michelle Obama, she must have been offended at the insult to her subjects, no matter how slight.
She is hip enough to have already had an Ipod from her grandson. She doubtless has color TV with which to marvel at Barack Obama’s stunning eloquence and his wife’s toned arms. It apparently needs pointed out we do not have royalty in this country, and the Obamas show poor manners when they become overly familiar with royalty.
Just like Catholics in France were mortified when President Bling Bling, or “the American,” texted on his mobile while he had an audience with the Pope. It’s disrespectful. It’s even cruel irony that Obama was supposed to elevate the US among it’s allies and restore dignity to the Oval Office.

If the Queen didn’t seem ticked off, then I guess it is no big deal. When I interviewed at Warner Brothers, I walked in the room where there were six people. The Senior Vice President wasn’t there yet. I saw two chairs and I took the one on the end. I noticed I got some strange looks. When Mr. T came in I could tell by the way he looked at me that he was acting like a school kid. Later I was hired and he loved the fact that I had the nerve to take his chair. He loved it, said it showed I had a lot of confidence. Was with him for 14 years. Times are changing and maybe the Queen was flattered. We don’t know.

capitulus on April 2, 2009 at 1:46 PM
You’re a very angry person. What do you have against fat people, btw? I would stay where you are – you wouldn’t do well in regular society.
capitulus on April 2, 2009 at 1:47 PM
Go comb the fleas out of those hairy pits, comrade.

Wow you guys are clowns. This is what has got your panties into a bunch? You need to ask for a refund back from your speed reading course, because the Daily Mail link actually says this:
It sounds like the Queen and the Obamas are friends to me.

…anyway…moving on…I’m guessing the “sexually-repressed” hit it on the head by the reacion–LOL! I usually get it right with men…I’m that good…
RepubChica on April 2, 2009 at 1:53 PM
Lovely. How about the moustache? Get that trimmed up?
capitulus on April 2, 2009 at 1:53 PM
Purely a rhetorical observation on your part since you’ve only seen the civilian side of life. How the hell would you know which is better. And I don’t hate fat people. I hate fat liberals, like you and Mike Moore.
But you’re right about one thing. I’m angry. And I’m getting angrier. Frankly, I’m not sure what would happen if God forbid we lose a bunch of the guys from my unit this next year knowing that ingrates like you are back stateside pissing on what we’re doing.

Hey, crapitulus’s big brother is back.
According to the NY Times, Pappy Bush never threw up on the Japanese Prime Minister at all-he threw up all over HIMSELF.

Nice try, kid. Thanks for playing!

Use your speedreading skills to scan the entire thread. Most of us said it’s not a big deal.

Actually, he likes the peach fuzz for the rim job…and you–guess the 5 dollar hookers aren’t turning tricks for you now that your bic lighter ain’t workin right…must be why you’re so happy and charming
RepubChica on April 2, 2009 at 1:57 PM
You should seek counseling – really. You’re clearly mentally unstable. Engaging you any further would be taking advantage of your obvious mental handicap and that’s just not sporting.
Best of luck in working things out. There’s no time like the present.
