Barney Frank: Republicans have a “psychological disorder” or something

posted at 4:21 pm on April 2, 2009 by Allahpundit

A very particular psychological disorder, as it turns out: They think giving Tim Geithner carte blanche to regulate “excessive” compensation at firms receiving TARP money might be a bad idea. This is a sequel of sorts to yesterday’s vid of Cavuto pounding Democrat Alan Grayson for writing the bill that would grant Geithner that discretion. Frank’s spinning it here as little more than an expanded version of the bill to tax the AIG bonuses that so many House Republicans supported. If they objected to excessive compensation in that case, he reasons, why wouldn’t they object to it in other cases as well? Hence their supposed “psychological disorder” in voting against this one. Of course, objecting to a discrete set of payments at AIG and deciding that Geithner should be appointed salary czar or whatever for TARP companies are two very different things — but seeing the dopey Republicans who voted for the bonus tax squirm is almost worth it.

Grayson’s bill passed last night, 247 to 171. Exit quotation: “The government can barely run the government… To try to tell these companies how to pay the people who work for them is not the right thing to do.” Click the image to watch.

You mean the psychological disorder that makes you say a company is doing just fine and needs no oversight, and months later blame your political allies for not saying the opposite?

Whatever you thay. Thufferin’ thuccotath.

MadisonConservative on April 2, 2009 at 4:25 PM

Hey, Barney – maybe they’re just finally starting to understand free markets. See, setting compensation levels sorta takes the “free” out of the markets.

But if you want to force the smartest, most productive members of companies to go elsewhere, that’s fine. How will you make up that lost tax revenue, though?

hawksruleva on April 2, 2009 at 4:26 PM

I still, for the life of me, can’t figure out why anyone with any sense would think this is a good idea.

Or, is it a case of very few thinking it’s a good idea, but the voices are amplified only on one side of this garbage?

Very very scary situation.

Did you hear Obama call for an end to “boom and bust”?
The business cycle is like breathing to the economy, expelling the failed in order to make room for expansion. Saying you are going to get rid of boom-and-bust is like saying you are going to hold your breath indefinitely (I think a case can be made that the Great Depression was essentially this).

Republicans are opposed to dictatorships.

Dictators usually have their opponents sent to insane asylums for “psychological” disorders. See Hitler, A.; Stalin, J.; or Hussein, S.

Ergo, dixit Bawney Fwank, Weepublicans have psychological disawdas.

Blarney Fwank, like Pelosi, Reid, Geithner and the rest of the sorry gang of holier-than-thou goons in D.C. (not excluding Osama Obama Himself), see a chance to make their wildest fantasy become real: they will soon have a cradle-to-grave, playtime to work-time stranglehold over us all, controlling what we eat (and who grows our food), what work we do and how much/little we are paid for it, and who makes the cars we drive and runs the banks those of us with any money left use.

None have the guts to admit that they are hard-core Stalinists; instead, it is “for our own good.”

Until every one of these cancers is rooted out of the national body, we are doomed to a life familiar to those who toiled for the good of the Party in Russia, circa 1917.

Commissars never have to work. That, plus the joy of living in unearned luxury and the power to enforce rules on others, drives these pathetic losers.

Sadly, we are closer to a revolution than we think. Whether it can be accomplished without bloodshed is a question we will soon have to face.

Of course this is from Wiki and has obiviously cleaned up it is still pretty good reading.

Steve Gobie
In 1990, The House Ethics Committee recommended Frank be reprimanded because he “reflected discredit upon the House” by using his congressional office to fix 33 of Steve Gobie’s parking tickets. Frank confirmed that he paid Gobie for sex, hired him with personal funds as an aide and wrote letters on congressional stationery on his behalf to Virginia probation officials, but Frank said he fired Gobie when he learned that prostitution clients were visiting the apartment.[8]

The investigation into Gobie and Frank’s interactions were prompted by Gobie’s attempt to cash in on assertions that Frank knew and approved of Gobie’s illegal activities in the Frank residence. “Two years [after Frank fired Gobie], Gobie tried unsuccessfully to sell his story to the Washington Post. He then gave the story to the Washington Times for nothing, in hopes of getting a book contract for the male version of The Mayflower Madam.”[9] After an investigation, the Ethics Committee found no evidence that Frank had known of or been involved in the alleged illegal activity and dismissed all of Gobie’s more scandalous claims.[10][11]

Attempts to expel or censure Frank, led by Republican member Larry Craig (who himself was later embroiled in his own gay sex scandal), failed.[12][13] Rather, the House voted 408-18 to reprimand Frank who later won re-election in 1990 with 66 percent of the vote, and has won by larger margins ever since.[14]

Those who work 40+ hours a week, or two jobs to make ends meet deserve more. They are at least attempting to better themselves. Those who set in their government subsidized living quarters for years on end, not even attempting to better themselves or their families, deserve where they are.

My two cents.

Grayson is priceless in the DC Examiner article:

This bill will show which Republicans are so much on the take from the financial services industry that they’re willing to actually bless compensation that has no bearing on performance and is excessive and unreasonable,” Grayson told the Examiner on Monday. “We’ll find out who are the people who understand that the public’s money needs to be protected, and who are the people who simply want to suck up to their patrons on Wall Street.”

Grayson’s suggestion that any Republican who voted against the bill was “on the take” became the subject of testy exchanges in the committee room when Republican Rep. Pete Sessions read the quote to Rep. Frank. “Do you agree with that statement?” Sessions asked.

“I will say this,” Frank answered. “It has been my experience that there are Republican members of Congress who are able to be completely mistaken for free.”

These Dems who had their hands in the pockets of AIG, Fannie and Freddie make me want to puke. How in the world do they get away with saying this stuff unanswered?
