Thank you for your kind permission. With that thought in hand, I’m wondering why the Queen would give anyone any hints as to what they ought to give her? If you look back over the years, and at the gifts various Presidents have given her, I doubt she asked for a bronze of a cowgirl “with personal inscription” — that was what I would call “spontaneous” — an unbidden gift.

Consider what the unnamed white house sources are making the Queen look like. How did “asking the Queen” what she wanted happen? That’s the modern AMERICAN way of giving gifts — a “gift card” which requires no thought on the part of the person giving the gift — only on the part of the person receiving the gift. As I pointed out in my root comment, this meme (as you put it) makes the Queen look like a child in a candy shop.

The article I quoted from has the white house putting considerable thought (I believe those were the exact words) as to the gifts of state to be presented to the Queen. There’s no thought involved at all on your part if you ask the intended recipient what they want and then get it for them…

I do indeed think the unnamed white house guys are lying, and I think that the lie is far worse than the original faux pas, since it is intended to improve Obama’s look of culture at the expense of that of the Queen.

I’ll be honest — when someone asks me what I want for a gift, my response is always “nothing — you don’t need to do that”. I expect, if the Queen were asked, that would be her response too.
