Smart power: Obama gets the queen … an iPod

posted at 2:35 pm on April 1, 2009 by Allahpundit

Because, after all, nothing says “special relationship” like a gadget you can buy in every mall in the western world. What’d he get Prince Philip? An Xbox?

The inevitable punchline — almost as inevitable as the fact that Gordon Brown’s DVDs were the wrong format: She already owns one.

Barack Obama met the Queen at Buckingham Palace today and gave her a gift of an iPod loaded with video footage and photographs of her 2007 visit to the United States. In return, the Queen gave the President a silver framed photograph of herself – apparently a standard present for visiting dignitaries.

The Queen already has an iPod, a 6GB silver Mini version she bought in 2005 at the suggestion of Prince Andrew.

Turns out there was more loaded on there than just 2007 mementos. Tapper shares the somewhat horrifying detail that they added some music for her too, leaving us to wonder what America’s diplomatic brain trust considers appropriate for a royal mix tape. We know what a big fan The One is of that “Yes, We Can” track…

Seriously, none of this merits a firing or three in the protocol office?

In view of the fact Queen Elizabeth is rather short and Michelle Obama is toweringly large, wouldn’t it have been a courtesy, as a visitor and guest in the Queen’s house, for Michelle Obama to have worn flat shoes instead of high heels so as not to overwhelm/intimidate her hostess?

The shock and discomfort on the Queen and Philip’s face is obvious. Incredibly thoughtless bores assisted by buffoonishly incompetent WH office of protocol and Dep’t of State. They’re all too self-absorbed to ever notice anything’s wrong.

Could you please write the Queen of England the Prime Minister and the British citizens on behalf of the Americans that are not out of their minds crazy over Presidente Pinnochio apologizing for the lack of wisdom, class, and common respect normally advanced by our President and his spouse.

These are abnormal times and we deeply regret and apologize for the One who bambooozled half the electorate into thinking Urkel has a clue.

As citizens we could respond by sending the English people some tea from our already opened boxes.

Thanks Rush

If Obama’s such a video guy, the Queen should have given him a DVD of The Queen, starring the great Helen Mirren, in which a smug head of government (her Prime Minister) grows up and learns to admire her stoical wisdom based on deep and long experience and to reject the juvenile superficiality of his self-admiring handlers and staff.

Slightly OT but you should read this for a British take on the lovefest so far. He doesn’t make anything of iPodgate, but just drips loathing (mostly of Brown). Great fun.

Fortunata on April 1, 2009 at 11:20 PM

Just saw this comment at the Times:

Another note: In the third to the last paragraph, what Obama said, if it is quoted exactly, makes absolutely no sense. But that is expected if he didn’t have his teleprompter with him.

This is the paragraph he meant:

“And so I’m very much looking forward to meeting her for the first time later this evening. And as you might imagine, Michelle has been really thinking that through — because I think in the imagination of people throughout America, I think what the Queen stands for and her decency and her civility, what she represents, that’s very important.”

I don’t know if this was discussed earlier, but I totally missed that.

He [Obama] spoke slowly, in a meandering manner. Some might say that he was thoughtful and professorial. Others might call his manner circuitous, even yarny. Am I saying that he was a bore? Oh dear. I find that I possibly am.

Saw this at the end–he never quits asserting, does he?

They left with Mr Obama snaking an arm round his host’s shoulder and ushering him from the room. Very much an ‘I’m in charge’ gesture.

One of the most… intrigueing things in this whole weird situation for moi?

The Left, and Obama in particular, is all about respect for other cultures… for Kowtowing to the multicultural set…

And yet, they act like the 60′s stereotypical ugly Americans when dealing with other cultures…

Boils down to class…. the Press is all agog over Michelle O’s cloathing… and how it shows “class”… without the realiziation that Class has nothing to do with cloathing…

Romeo13 on April 1, 2009 at 11:43 PM

The most off-putting thing about these weird little diplomatic blunders from Obama isn’t the rudeness or incompetence it projects, but the way it demonstrates he has no sense of history. Gordon Brown was not just some functionary from a corporation Obama hasn’t gotten around to nationalizing yet, and the Queen is not just a frumpy old lady he’s obliged to humor on a slow afternoon. We don’t expect our leaders to extend proper honors and courtesies to the British because they might get angry and nuke us if we insult them. We do it because we share an ancient legacy of freedom, build on the idea that the rulers of a nation should be constrained by its laws – an idea introduced to the Western world by the British, amid a great deal of war and suffering. Democracy was formulated in ancient Greece, ignited by the British, and fanned into an inferno by America.

It is proper to be humble and gracious in the presence of the Queen, and other heads of state from the great ancient powers of East and West, because they are part of a tradition that deserves respect even if the modern world has transcended it.

Unfortunately, the modern Left has no regard for history – they are primarily interested in burning it down, disdaining its heroes and legends, as part of an implicit suggestion that history truly began with their own wonderful, special ideology. This is one of the reasons liberals are always so snide and dismissive of Western history, so eager to prove that all its heroes had feet of clay. All that matters about the past are its sins, all that matters about English kings is that some of them were oppressive, all that counts about the great men of American history is that most of them owned slaves. To suggest that the kingdoms of Europe, and the early America that sprang from them, did anything great is to downgrade the titanic achievements of New Deal progressivism, and to deny that post-FDR liberals are the first truly enlightened beings to walk the planet.

Deeply marinated in this ideology, Obama could find nothing especially noteworthy about his British visitors. There isn’t much they can do for him, they can’t contribute money to his endless campaign, and they don’t represent any voting bloc in the patchwork Democrat constituency, so they were somewhat annoying wastes of his time… and that is how an undistinguished “community organizer” of no particular achievements and a wafer-thin resume decided it would be appropriate to toss a mass-market trinket from Best Buy, preloaded with his own empty speeches, to the royal descendant of Robert the Bruce, the House of Stuart, and the House of Tudor.

I couldn’t agree more. Without the unique British heritage of hundreds of years of hammering out the curtailment of the power of kings, the rights of men, and the rule of law through words and revolutions (the Charter of Liberties, the Magna Carta, Oliver Cromwell, Lex Rex, John Locke, the Glorious Revolution, William Blackstone, etc.) we would have had no free Englishmen ready for the American Revolution.

Azcoyote – It goes deeper than that. The purpose of official visits (which intellectually deficient mental midgets like athensdork don’t understand) is to build trust and relationshsips.

So, Obama has repeatedly acted like a horse’s ass with the Brits.. Athensdork thinks that is no big deal,.

Now, suppose the Brit Intel services find some fairly credible evidence that the Iranians have a multistage weapon of about 400 Megatons (no misprint)and that they are planning on sailing it into NYC for detonation.

Would they trust Obama enough to expose their intel gathering capabilities and sources??? …or… would they say “But Sir Edmund, The data is ambiguous and we think that Obama chap would bungle it even if we handed it to him on a silver platter wot?? Crumpet sir?? I daresay we should wait and see if anything develops eh??”

HeY Athensdork… This isn’t fun and games or an america bashing class with your favorite idiot leftist professor. When you F-Up in this game a couple of million people die.

Obama has crapped repeatedly on the brits, one of our best alllies. Meanwhile he is desperately trying to perform fallatio on our worst enemies… What could possibly go wrong???

No update on the fact that the Queen requested the iPod?

I guess why spoil all the fun, right?

Hey, Barack, I wanna iPod too!

I doubt the Queen was that petty. Nobody asks for gifts except little children. Is the White House spinning the Queen as a petulant little child?

Show us a link, so we can get the same scoop you seem to have.

Found it:

MAJOR GARRETT (Fox News senior White House correspondent): Yes, a video iPod, which we are told by White House staff the queen requested. She has an audio iPod, but not a video iPod.

Yep, the white house is saying that.

Now, if they lied about it, then yes that’s something to get upset over.

But, I doubt they did. Anyway, if you want to keep up this meme alive, feel free.

And if it’s a lie, I’m soooo sure the Queen would say so. The gracious way she overlooked the Obamas other gaucheries would say otherwise.

Face it. The First Couple is tacky and classless.

Thank you for your kind permission. With that thought in hand, I’m wondering why the Queen would give anyone any hints as to what they ought to give her? If you look back over the years, and at the gifts various Presidents have given her, I doubt she asked for a bronze of a cowgirl “with personal inscription” — that was what I would call “spontaneous” — an unbidden gift.

Consider what the unnamed white house sources are making the Queen look like. How did “asking the Queen” what she wanted happen? That’s the modern AMERICAN way of giving gifts — a “gift card” which requires no thought on the part of the person giving the gift — only on the part of the person receiving the gift. As I pointed out in my root comment, this meme (as you put it) makes the Queen look like a child in a candy shop.

The article I quoted from has the white house putting considerable thought (I believe those were the exact words) as to the gifts of state to be presented to the Queen. There’s no thought involved at all on your part if you ask the intended recipient what they want and then get it for them…

I do indeed think the unnamed white house guys are lying, and I think that the lie is far worse than the original faux pas, since it is intended to improve Obama’s look of culture at the expense of that of the Queen.

I’ll be honest — when someone asks me what I want for a gift, my response is always “nothing — you don’t need to do that”. I expect, if the Queen were asked, that would be her response too.
