Quotes of the day

posted at 10:30 pm on April 1, 2009 by Allahpundit

“I simply can’t believe it. This stunning, unprecedented action has left me speechless for the past two days. I keep saying, ‘Did Obama really fire the chairman of General Motors? The wealthiest and most powerful corporation of the 20th century? Can he do that? Really? Well, damn! What else can he do?!’

He has the massive will of the American people behind him—and he has been granted permission by us to do what he sees fit. If you liked this week’s all-net three-pointer, stay tuned.”

He does not have the will of the sane American people. Does that count for anything?

sheesh on April 1, 2009 at 10:35 PM

He has the massive will of the American people behind him—and he has been granted permission by us to do what he sees fit.

No he doesn’t. He has the massive will of maybe 30% of the population behind him. Others are apathetic or in opposition. Anyway, as I said in the headlines thread, “Sieg, Heil!”

And does it bother lefties that Moore seems to be even fatter than Rush?

NORM!

Good job to Glenn Beck for starting off by quoting definitions. That’s half the problem with this whole issue. The language has been so muddled up that it’s hard to even have intelligent discussions about whether, yes, Obama is acting like a socialist and fascist in many ways, and what that means.

Why that’s a dangerous threat to our liberties!!!

The Obama Administration running entire businesses and industries across the country?

Ho hum. No danger there.

For some reason property rights and economic freedom cannot be threatened in the minds of our civil libertarians.

What an idiot. Even if you agree with any of his premises, what he says makes no sense.

He cites Wall Street’s negative reaction as a good sign? He uses the quote “should send a chill through all Americans who believe in free enterprise” as a sign of support? He acknowledges the $23 million golden parachute and then says “See ya. Don’t wanna be ya.”

This is just illogical, incoherent stream of consciousness based on a misplaced anti-business emotion.

Yes, it could be a case where we are moving into a new -ism. Mark Levin was very smart with his new book in defining all of the radical left movements into the word statism. Instead of getting hung up on terminology, he focuses on the actions of the left. Levin’s book will go down in history as the savior of this country, IMHO.

carbon_footprint on April 1, 2009 at 10:57 PM

Under both systems, sacrifice is invoked as a magic, omnipotent solution in any crisis—and “the public good” is the altar on which victims are immolated. But there are stylistic differences of emphasis. The socialist-communist axis keeps promising to achieve abundance, material comfort and security for its victims, in some indeterminate future. The fascist-Nazi axis scorns material comfort and security, and keeps extolling some undefined sort of spiritual duty, service and conquest. The socialist-communist axis offers its victims an alleged social ideal. The fascist-Nazi axis offers nothing but loose talk about some unspecified form of racial or national “greatness.” The socialist-communist axis proclaims some grandiose economic plan, which keeps receding year by year. The fascist-Nazi axis merely extols leadership—leadership without purpose, program or direction—and power for power’s sake.

that’s hyperbole to begin with. large-scale forced labor didn’t begin until wwII broke out. so the economic boom had nothing to do with forced labor. the extermination of jews et. al accelerated in the later years of the war.

between 1933 and the war, there was political oppression and anti-jewish measures, etc., but again, it had nothing to do with the economy itself. indeed, the reason germany was able to fight the war for so long, on so many fronts, was its highly efficient war economy it had built in the previous decade. check.

But the powers he is grabbing today can be used by a dictator tomorrow.

Isn’t that what the left said about the NSA program? Sure, it may be used properly today to stop terorrists but tomorrow that power may be abused.

But for some reason (I think I know why) our liberal/left friends see no dangers in this accumulation of power by Washington.

I guess they imagine that the powers will always be used wisely.

getalife needs to get a clue. Fascism, Socialism, and Communism are not mutually exclusive. In fact all three movements are essentially identical in their ultimate goals.

Nazis were not “right” or conservative like liberals like to portray. The only reason Hitler had a problem with the Communists in Russia is because Germany also had a Communist party and he felt threatened that the Communist party in Germany would rise and take away his power.

The fasces was used by the Romans as a symbol of authority and power. Hitler usurped Roman symbology for his own purposes.

IIRC, the House of Representatives has displayed it on the wall since the beginning of the Capitol, as well as the Mace. This is an ancient symbol, used by the Founders, and to say it is associated exclusively with fascism is absurd.

A jaw-dropper.

I tend to go with “statist” as, sadly “fascist” has lost true meaning through overuse.

“Socialist” might be fine except that one can point to some pleasant countries with socialist policies, not truly socialist though.

Sure. All it takes is an Enabling Act, a slavish media, an impotent legislature and apathy on the part of the sheeple.

Without capitalism, what kind of movies could this man possibly make.

sherry on April 1, 2009 at 10:58 PM

The same as usual: propaganda films. State command economies churn them out frequently. Of course, the financial rewards will be lower after the dollar devaluation and we all become public employees.

Loxodonta on April 1, 2009 at 11:22 PM

This is an ancient symbol, used by the Founders, and to say it is associated exclusively with fascism is absurd.

A jaw-dropper.

cadetwithchips2 on April 1, 2009 at 11:20 PM

When this symbol is stamped onto the “patriotic foods,” it might not be so absurd anymore…

You are right. It’s all in how the symbol is used.

Do you/we think that FDR was a dictator?

Well, I think the concern is along the lines that Tocqueville discussed in Democracy in America.

That a sort of “bland despotism” envelopes democracy where the people become entirely dependent on the state and the state directs all of their affairs.

Is this a dictatorship? No, not really. There’s no name for it really (which is why Tocqueville couldn’t come up with one).

It’s a type of statism that clearly the Framers were worried about.

It’s certainly not freedom.

Fascism has lost meaning because we have let the left continually redefine the term so as to distance themselves from their ugly cousin… We should never let them forget.

HA commenters, so long as getalife and horde ruin threads on HA, go on strike. Sooner or later someone will notice and get rid of such auto-comment-generators.

This back-fro with them is utterly stupid, self included.

Toiling in a government rice paddy while someone whips your back is “public” employment? Technically, I suppose so.

I like Goldberg’s “American Fascism with a Smiley Face.” Sounds just like the CEO in Chief.

Upstater85 on April 1, 2009 at 11:26 PM

HOW MUCH DO YOU GET PAID?

Jamson64 on April 1, 2009 at 11:06 PM

Clearly too much. We only hired getalife because he has a rich connected daddy.

“Patriotic foods” usually have Eagles stamped on them. Know who else used Eagles? Hitler! [o noes!]

heh.

cadetwithchips2 on April 1, 2009 at 11:27 PM

getalife needs to get a clue.

MobileVideoEngineer on April 1, 2009 at 11:20 PM

Exactly. I say again, National Socialism was heretical Marxism. The difference was the “National” part, which afforded Hitler the use of Germanic myth.

I’d brand it on their foreheads, but then people would call me “extreme”.

Yeah, he definitely has a lot of similarities to Mussolini – including the adulation of the Chris Matthews type.
