Quotes of the day

posted at 10:30 pm on April 1, 2009 by Allahpundit

“I simply can’t believe it. This stunning, unprecedented action has left me speechless for the past two days. I keep saying, ‘Did Obama really fire the chairman of General Motors? The wealthiest and most powerful corporation of the 20th century? Can he do that? Really? Well, damn! What else can he do?!’

He has the massive will of the American people behind him—and he has been granted permission by us to do what he sees fit. If you liked this week’s all-net three-pointer, stay tuned.”

We hear praise of a power-wielding, arm-twisting President who “gets his program through Congress ,[ or by congress]” by knowing the use of power. Throughout the course of history, there have been many other such wielders of power. There have even been dictators who regularly held plebiscites, in which their dictatorships were approved by an Ivory-soap-like percentage of the electorate. But their countries were not free, nor can any country remain free under such despotic power. Some of the current worship of powerful executives may come from those who admire strength and accomplishment of any sort. Others hail the display of Presidential strength simply because they approve of the result reached by the use of power. This is nothing less than the totalitarian philosophy that the end justifies the means. If ever there was a philosophy of government totally at war with that of the Founding Fathers, it is this one.

Yes. And the two articles fit the Orwellian theme:

When asked if he would leave open the option to pressure a bank CEO to resign, Geithner replied: “Of course.”

“Don’t think we’re not keeping score, brother.” That’s what President Barack Obama said to Rep. Peter DeFazio in a closed-door meeting of the House Democratic Caucus last week, according to the Associated Press.

So, we have the least experienced, most leftist President ever, who is a graduate of the most corrupt and ruthless political machines in the country (Chicago), instituting state command and control over major sectors of our economy, while “keeping score” about who is supporting him.

As AllahPundit might say, “What could go wrong?”

Thanks for the link to that article. Wow, every day I think my jaw can’t drop any further, yet everyday there is something else. I just watched a rerun of Greta where she asked Newt whether voters got someone different than they expected. Newt said yes while Greta argued he is doing almost exactly what he said. Honestly both of them have a point. We all knew or saw through the soaring speeches yet somehow this all seems so stunning.

BTW, what did Michelle Obama quote from Alinsky at the Dem convention? The WSJ article mentions it but doesn’t quote it. I am curious what she said.

Patriot33 obviously uses the term liberal here to mean “the other side”–because liberal-facism is an oxy-moron in the strict sense of the term “liberal.” Now that they are exposing their illiberality more and more, it is imperative that we stop calling them liberals. I wish there were a better word than “statist,” all those “ist” terms remind me of my Trotskyist phase–”you obscurantist, revisionist, petty-bourgois reformist. . .” Ugh! Can we just call them A-holes? Yeah, I know, not very precise . . .

smellthecoffee on April 2, 2009 at 12:31 AM

I said “liberal” meaning modern liberals, or progressives. Of course, they are anything but in the classical since. Classical liberalism of the Founding Fathers etc. is essentially conservatism today. That word isn’t the only one the left has twisted the meaning, sadly. A better term perhaps would be Progressive Fascism (if modern “progressives” only knew their history, they wouldn’t dare use the word again to describe themselves). I agree we should call them something other than liberals, why not leftists and leave it at that? That is what they are, in a word.

Patriot33 on April 2, 2009 at 2:17 AM

I don’t know if I can sleep after reading the article in the WSJ.

I’m also really bugged that Michelle touched the Queen. Was that just to show she could? I hope that thought occurs to the rulers in Europe. We may have to turn to them for help overcoming facisim this time around.

Yes not touching the Queen is a stupid tradition, but it is their tradition in their country.

The Obamas are the people who sent back the bust of Churchill. I think they harbor a great haterd of the British. When Obama’s grandfather was tortured in Kenya, Churchill was PM, but Elizabeth was Queen. And Michelle touched her against all protocols.

Why would Obama hold a grudge against Churchill but not Elizabeth?

petunia on April 2, 2009 at 2:19 AM

I found this blog via the Anchoress which shows not everyone in Europe finds Obama wonderful:

Allegedly the most charismatic politician in the world, Mr Obama was a disappointment. It sounded as though he had a blocked nose and so his lack of energy may have been a symptom of a cold. Jet lag, too. He probably wished he could have stayed in bed.

He spoke slowly, in a meandering manner. Some might say that he was thoughtful and professorial. Others might call his manner circuitous, even yarny. Am I saying that he was a bore? Oh dear. I find that I possibly am.

I read that some there found it rather upsetting that Michelle touched the Queen. IMO, Bush was not a very good speaker but in interpersonal terms he was very charming. I get the impression that Obama is exactly the opposite. Of course, he is only a speaker when he has his teleprompter as we know. The impression of him though is that he must be also engaging and charismatic. I hear no one describe either him or Michelle that way one on one. It is all facade and oddly enough I think Europe is recognizing that long before many Americans.

msmveritas on April 2, 2009 at 2:32 AM

Petunia, I too am annoyed/offended that Michelle put her hands on the Queen. Unlike you, however, I don’t think it’s a “stupid tradition,” I think it’s just elementary respect. You know, “I won’t be wronged, I won’t be insulted, and I won’t be laid a hand on.” Touching anybody in that situation is just a dominance gesture, and you can be sure Michelle knows that.

One thing that nobody seems to have the balls to address, although Rush Limbaugh’s getting close: 0 and the Missus just don’t like white people, despite having been kowtowed to their entire lives by white people simply because of their color.

Ain’t nothing “reverse” about it; it’s just racism.

Upstater85 on April 2, 2009 at 2:44 AM

Interesting, the JFK image is exactly what Chris Matthews keeps looking for in nearly every move Obama makes. If you push people on what JFK accomplished there are no answers. He was promise cut short that is left to be idealized. Carter had higher approvals at this point but we know he ended no where near that. I remember Carter and there wasn’t the idolatry though and the persuasive techniques were entirely different

Do you remember Mush from the Wimp?

Carter left office because he was summarily fired by the American people for simultaneous recession, inflation (stagflation) and weakness in the face of challenge.

Now, he is idolized by the MSM. And liberals, even those who lived through that era, blame the stagflation on that evil Reagan!

Sometimes I think I’m reliving this, except it’s much, much scarier.

Loxodonta on April 2, 2009 at 3:18 AM

Loxodonta on April 2, 2009 at 3:18 AM

I didn’t remember that article but I well remember Carter being fired. I also remember being a freshman in college watching Reagan being inaugurated while the hostages were being released. The media were awful to Reagan almost as bad as they treated Bush. Reagan was the real deal and is finally getting some acknowledgement.

I totally agree about reliving it but Carter never felt this scary. I hope that the coming inflation and weakness is treated as it was with Carter. We are going to need a powerful spokesperson though to start talking common sense and countering the Alinsky tactics of the left. I pray for that person to emerge.

I’m much older than you and should remember more, except the I was working 12 hour days then. And perhaps I forgot, but did I mention that I’m older than you?

As I recall, Carter was not given as hard a time by the press as Bush. There was both positive and negative. I think the same is true of Reagan, except that it seemed like a lot of the media thought he was either a doddering old fool, but unfortunately lovable, or too conservative, but strangely popular for some mysterious reason.

Everything has gotten a lot nastier these days.

I share your thoughts about someone having to emerge to challenge Obama. I have no idea who it will be. I’m thinking it will not be any of the current “leading contenders,” but may be wrong. I really have no horse in the race. I am waiting and watching and hoping the base can stick together and stop dividing into waring camps to be picked off one at a time.

Loxodonta on April 2, 2009 at 3:55 AM

And the media keeps trying to pass it off as people being concerned about new gun control laws. I say horsepussy to that, folks know a fight is coming, whether it be driven by economics, loss of freedom, or whatever. There is a fight coming and folks are preparing for it, you can feel it out there. The wedges have been driven and the socialists are stoking the fires of discord.

I remember when the first AWB passed, there were no runs on guns and ammo like we are seeing right now, AR15 and AK parts were not backordered for 6-12 months, and there was plenty of ammunition available. I ordered some small spare parts in mid-December….delivery is scheduled for early May!

Loxodonta on April 2, 2009 at 3:55 AM

I completely agree, I think we may be surprised who will emerge and I am not committed to any horse yet either. It is my great fear that the base would wage war rather than unite and support a viable candidate. Perhaps the wandering in the wilderness will allow some of the warring tendencies to burn themselves out. For now I must catch a bit of sleep and try to stop worrying. Goodnight!

No Liberal will dare to take on Limbaugh in a debate. They reserve themselves to a private studio, camera, and microphone. Twenty years now, Limbaugh has been in the cross-hairs of the Liberal machine. They have thrown everything they have at him, with no victories recorded. Limbaugh gave them the golden egg with his drug addiction some years ago, and even that incident left them without victory. Liberals won’t debate their ideology, just won’t happen. They shut down the conversation with rude-obnoxious behavior and walk. Not one Liberal, including the rookie president, will ever take on Limbaugh in a debate. I remember when the Mayor of Salt Lake City decided he’d take on Sean Hannity in a debate format. The guy got his ass handed to him along with a broom & dustpan to sweep up what was left of his reputation. Sean’s good, Limbaugh is the master.

Why is this guy relevant anyway? He’s just some blowhard that has weasled his way into the film making business by spouting a bunch of biased bs to support his liberal agenda without any cold, hard facts to support it. Does he have any cold, hard facts to support his statements about GM? I won’t read his article because I know damn well it will make my blood pressure go through the roof. Wait till the long arm of government starts messing with his livelihood. Then listen to the fat boy sing.

Obama has turned out so much worse than I ever really believed he could. I am shocked that someone this ruthless and ethicsless could get to the Whitehouse. I want to plead with Europe to stop him! There is truly a madman in the Whitehouse. World beware his lust for power is limitless. Help us China, Germany, Sarkozy? Stop this man.

No one else is going to help us. We have to break through the mental block of the “moderates” ourselves.

I’m reminded of the “If you aren’t outraged yet, you aren’t paying attention” bumper sticker.

So wish I could show that must-read piece to some of my more… unfortunate minded family members.

I remember a rant from my uncle on the 4th of July last year talking about how the Swedes were the happiest people in the world because the government takes care of them all.

…….Yeah.

“Oooh, ahhh, that’s how it always starts. Then later there’s running and screaming” Jeff Goldblum in Jurrasic Park:Lost World

Then you should remind them of how the Nazi Party got its start.

My hunting buddy is teaching me how to reload right now. This is the way to go. The bullets we just produced in my garage, are much better than anything I can purchase.

Keemo on April 2, 2009 at 8:46 AM

Same here. And once you get the basics, it’s easy to move on. I started .223 and after I saw the tighter groups I was getting with the reloads I picked up the stuff I needed to to the rest of my rifles too 30.06 and 30-30 and I’m waiting on the dies for my 9mm pistol.

BTW, I collect almost all of the .223 that’s shot at our range (McKellers) here at Bragg. Almost no one reloads and they don’t mind you sweeping up their area. I have more .223 brass than I could ever reload.

Rainy day stuff, you know?

I agree we should call them something other than liberals, why not leftists and leave it at that? That is what they are, in a word.
Patriot33 on April 2, 2009 at 2:17 AM
I’m for it. They are anything but liberal… Although I think they are starting to fit the 20th century definition of progressive quite well…
Upstater85 on April 2, 2009 at 2:29 AM

Exactly.

That word implies that they advocate ‘Liberty’ – look at their actions and policies and it’s clear that the last thing they want.

All the Leftists care about is Power.

The best word to describe the Leftists is Socialist-fascist, or Demo-fascist or Demon-fascisti.

Moore was so much easier to stand when all he could do was inhale Twinkies.

“Waiting for the news that MM choked to death on his chicken samich.”

Never happen. The State will put a feeding tube in him and keep him alive. He’s already brain dead so not much would change.

DWB on April 2, 2009 at 11:22 AM

Why not call them what they are right now? They fit the definition of fascists, so that’s what I’ll call them.

Chaz706 on April 2, 2009 at 11:34 AM

Please please oh please get rid of that photo of Michael Moore.

It is not Halloween.

You’re a smartie.
I want that brass collection opportunity for myself!
I got a guy who reloads. I save all of our brass.
