Attempting to destroy the known nuclear installations seems altogether insufficient. If Iran — the country that sent young children into combat against Iraq in the late 1980s — had nuclear weapons, which countries might be bothered?

(1) Iraq, the neighbour to the west? The two countries have fought one major conflict and even now their relationship is tense and Iran has been accused of fomenting violence in Iraq.

(2) Saudia Arabia, just over the water? S.A. and Iran are ideological opponents in a battle over who should control the murderous ideology of Islam. S.A. couldn’t make anything for itself but it could afford to buy something.

(3) UAE, also just over the water? Small enough to be very vulnerable, rich enough to buy weapons and arrogant enough to want to wave a ‘big stick’.

(4) Pakistan, the nuclear-armed neighbour to the east?

Sure, a conflict would disrupt trade … but that wasn’t sufficent to prevent the Iraq-Iran war and the Iraq-Kuwait war. These countries are predominantly Islamic with Islamic values, Islamic priorities and Islamic reasoning. What we consider valuable is possibly not at all important to them.

Countries like Russiam, the USA, the UK and France decided that their interests were best served with policies such as ‘no first-strike’ and M.A.D. and thus the enemies ‘co-operated’, in a manner of speaking, to ensure the nuclear option wouldn’t be used.

Iran might well think it’s interests are best served with a first-strike policy and, given their past behaviour, that cannot be ruled-out even though it seems pointless and crazy from our perspective.

Hence, if the other countries think that Iran might be working towards a first strike capability then they might decide to adopt the same policy.

Let’s see. As another poster has pointed out, Israel does not use American tanks, they build their own, the Merkava (now in its 4th gen) because they feel it is better suited to their needs.

American tanks are now equipped with reactive armor and other technological advances developed by the Israelis, including the Trophy tank defense system that is now standard equipment on M1A1 tanks and US APC like the Stryker and Bradley.

They also manufacture their own guns. Ever heard of the UZI? The IDF is replacing the UZI with the Tabor rifle, also an Israeli development.

Yes, Israel uses US military planes, but they’ve developed avionics that are now spec’d on top line US fighters.

They also use US missiles, but they’ve modified them for more precise killing (like taking out Hamas leaders) with less collateral damage.

The US gets very good return value on military aid to Israel.

now I’m ignorant about the details there, but I do know they make their own tanks and they are the best in the world.

they are the world’s top ten arms producer (excel in high tech – precision weapons systems, advanced radar systems ); I believe UAVs(unmanned areal vehicles) were developed in Israel; excellent missile technology – Python, Popeye smart missiles for example; high performance defense electronic capabilities, c3 systems.
