Netanyahu: Stop Iran or I will
posted at 10:56 am on April 1, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Benjamin Netanyahu may have pulled off quite a feat in striking a Likud-Labor alliance, but don’t think that he’s completely mellowed. Before he took the oath of office as Prime Minister, Bibi told Barack Obama that the US had two missions — fixing the economy and preventing Iran from getting nuclear weapons. Netanyahu also warned Obama that Israel would accomplish the second mission if the new President wasn’t up to the task:
The primary imperative for the United States and President Barack Obama is to put an end to Iran’s nuclear race, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said before his swearing-in Tuesday, adding that if the US failed to do so Israel might be forced to resort to a military strike on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear installations.
“The Obama presidency has two great missions: fixing the economy, and preventing Iran from gaining nuclear weapons,” Netanyahu told The Atlantic. The Iranian drive for a nuclear weapon was a “hinge of history,” he said, emphasizing that all of “Western civilization” was responsible for preventing an Iranian bomb. …
Netanyahu suggested that Israeli preemptive strikes against perceived threats were the result of the Jewish people learning from a long history of grappling against those who threatened their collective existence. He cited Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s repeated calls to “wipe Israel off the map,” as well as a recent remark by the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, to the effect that Israel was a “cancerous tumor.”
The new relationship between Israel and the US has already gotten off to a rocky start, and that can be seen in the difference between priorities. Notice that Netanyahu doesn’t mention the establishment of a Palestinian state as one of Obama’s missions. Netanyahu may have softened on that issue, but not to the point where he’s become misguided as to the real existential threat to Israel. The Palestinians are a problem that requires management, but do not by themselves pose a threat of annihilation to Israel. A nuclear-armed Iran does.
Obama wants to open a dialogue with Iran, but Netanyahu seems very skeptical about the possibilities for success along those lines. He declared himself pessimistic that dialogue alone would have any effect, but thought tougher economic sanctions had a chance. However, Netanyahu also pointed out what should be obvious — that Iranian theocrats don’t always act in pragmatic self-interest. That makes them more dangerous than any other nuclear power, he argued, because of the strong streak of millenialism in Tehran. Once they had the bomb, they might act rationally — but how could we trust them to do so?
It sounds as though Israel will only give a very short window for the US to take effective action before Netanyahu acts on his own. If he does so, it will put Obama on the spot; will he back the traditional American ally, or will he side with the country that hid its nuclear program for years and supports international terror through Hezbollah, Hamas, and Iraqi insurgents? Either way, an Israeli action will make Obama look impotent on the world stage. Netanyahu is clearly sending a signal for Obama to avoid looking emasculated.

I [heart] Bibi. Gov. Palin should wear that color more often.
Actually, I think the RNC should give her those silly clothes they bought for the family. I’m an RNC member…perhaps I’ll drop them a line. Their money is all raised from donations, right? If the AFL/CIO can use “donations” taken from members’ paychecks against their wills to vacation in 5 star splendor, why can’t the RNC buy clothes for Palin with money that was freely given to them?

I’m not convinced. We’ve been hearing about “what Israel is going to do if ((insert thing)) happens.” Remember when they were going to bomb Iran if Obama won the election?
Lehosh on April 1, 2009 at 11:03 AM
Obama has terrorists for friends so he’s more likely to side with Iran. I can’t see Obama acting in America’s or Israel’s best interest. It would require a tremendous ideological shift on Obama’s part to be loyal and helpful to our allies. Instead he will send Israel some DVD’s and Iran will likely get bailout funds.

New Game: Six Degrees of Palin-Nation.
We must link Sarah with the story with the fewer than six connections.
1. Netanyahu warned Obama that Israel would accomplish the second mission if the new President wasn’t up to the task.
2. Second mission would likely involve nuclear weapons.
3. Nuclear weapons are hot and so is Sarah!

Illinidiva on April 1, 2009 at 11:15 AM
So let bibi handle it.
The evidence is far from clear as to
a)how far Iran is from any weapons grade anything
b)whether or not a contained nuclear Iran would present more of a threat than the already nuclear state of North Korea. And i say this not to insist that Iran could pose no threat…but that the threat posed by Iran may not outweigh the costs of preventing a possible outcome. so long as Iranian potential remains clouded…it is difficult to assume the threat outweighs the cost of full scale war.
The israels have much less to lose, so if they feel like gambling with international stability or a regional conflagration fine…but the US need not stake a position one way or the other yet.

RJC Outraged by Obama Administration’s Decision
on UN Human Rights Council
Washington, D.C. (March 31, 2009) The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) expressed outrage at news reports that the United States will seek to join the United Nations Human Rights Council.
RJC Executive Director Matthew Brooks issued the following statement:
We are outraged to learn that President Barack Obama has decided to change the Bush administration’s policy of boycotting the U. N. Human Rights Council. The Human Rights Council is an arena in which undemocratic regimes, such as Saudi Arabia, Cuba, and Angola, have equal standing with truly free countries such as Canada, France, and the United Kingdom.
The Council’s record of upholding human rights is abysmal. The Council has failed to address some of the most serious human rights abuses of our time, including those taking place in Darfur. It is especially blind to human rights abuses by its own member countries.
On the other hand, the Council is a central venue for the most virulent Israel-bashing. Anne Bayefsky has reported that the Council, “has adopted more condemnations of Israel than all the other 191 U.N. states combined, while terminating human rights investigations on the likes of Iran, Cuba and Belarus.
Much of the Council’s agenda is at the behest of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, and the resolutions it submits to the General Assembly are unremittingly anti-Israel and anti-Western. The Bush administration, and other Western governments, have strongly opposed attempts in the Human Council to pass resolutions that would limit the right of free speech in democracies.
President Bush understood that there could be no positive result from American participation in an international body so inherently hostile to Israel and so fundamentally incapable of acting in defense of human rights. That President Obama has chosen to reverse American policy on this question is a blow to the U.S.-Israel relationship and a cause for deep concern among American Jews.

It sounds like some nonsensical thing that liberals say to justify taking the blame away from those who are responsible and spreading blame and misery on everyone else.

ernesto on April 1, 2009 at 11:23 AM
Seems to me the only threat to international stability in this situation is Iran having a nuclear weapon.
If Israel “did something,” that would get a bunch of Euroweenie bureaucrats up in arms and anger the already perpetually angered Middle Eastern countries, but if Iran got the bomb, everything changes.
It shouldn’t matter “how far they are” because they’re getting closer every minute. What matters is whether they get it or not.
