Unbelievable: Obama’s new HHS nominee has tax problems too

posted at 7:15 pm on March 31, 2009 by Allahpundit

And by “unbelievable,” I of course mean inevitable. Remember, she was the “safe” choice for HHS after Daschle got dinged for — that’s right — not paying his taxes.

By CBS’s count, this is the sixth nominee to have tax trouble. Yes, really.

In the letter, which was sent to senators and dated today, Sebelius wrote that she had made changes related to charitable contributions, business expenses and the sale of a home, according to the AP.

The wire service reports that she and her husband paid just over $7,000 in back taxes, along with $878 in interest, for the years 2005-2007…

On the charitable contributions front, she writes that she could not locate three acknowledgment letters out of her 49 charitable contributions in excess of $250, and thus eliminated those three deductions.

She also writes that she had “insufficient documentation” for some of her tax dedications for business expenses, though because of the Alternative Minimum Tax they did not affect the amount owed. She also said she mistakenly paid off a home loan that included deductable mortgage interest.

The Standard has a copy of the letter, in which she claims not to have noticed the errors until she asked a CPA to vet her returns from 2005-07 as preparation for her Senate confirmation. Exit question: Why didn’t a CPA at least catch the error on mortgage interest when the returns were originally prepared? Or do we have another implausible case here, a la Geithner, of a public official — the governor of Kansas, in this case — using Turbo Tax or something to do her own returns? Don’t politicians use accountants anymore?

Update: No biggie, says Baucus.

“Congress is going to need a strong partner at the Department of Health and Human Services to achieve comprehensive health reform this year, and we have that partner in Gov. Sebelius,” Baucus said. “There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Gov. Sebelius has the political experience, determination, and bipartisan work ethic to get the job done with Congress this year. She’s the right person for the job.”

I’m sure it’s been said before…

It’s clear the Dem pols love to raise our taxes because none of them pay their fair share.

This is why Democrats don’t mind high taxes, they don’t pay them anyway.

Seven Percent Solution on March 31, 2009 at 7:24 PM

I’m not trying to be glib, but I think this trend among Democrat politicians explains their willingness–almost eagerness–to raise taxes.

Either they think people will cheat on taxes anyway so the hikes won’t be impactful, people cheat so they deserve to pay more to pay their real “fair share”, or, at a minimum, they won’t have to pay those taxes themselves, so who cares.

How hard is it to know that you paid off your house and can’t deduct the interest on a loan you no longer have? That sounds dishonest and something someone would do because they thought they could get away with it.

How exactly do you mistakenly pay off your mortgage anyway? This doesn’t compute.

Sucks to be Daschle right now.

It looks like the best position to be in is to be the second/third string person.

Sure, the first guy got thrown out for tax issues more minor than your own, but, what does that matter? You’re the right person for the job.

Question, if SHE is the right person for the job, was it a mistake for Obama to nominate Daschle in the first place? Or are there just plenty of right people for the job and, while she’d be fine, they could also find someone without tax issues to be the ‘right person for the job’?

jimmy the notable on March 31, 2009 at 7:23 PM

The Flat Tax is useless. We tried that back in the 1980s and it wasn’t long (I think it was five minutes) before congress started screwing with it.

The FairTax is far preferable, as it will result in the repeal of the 16th Amendment, the disbanding of the IRS, and will force the federal government to operate within its means.

A flat tax does none of that.

Don’t politicians use accountants anymore?

Well it certainly isn’t like American politicians can’t afford them.

But if they use accountants, they can’t cheat on their taxes and get away with it. That is, unless their accountant is especially thankful for the extra c-note or twenty.

If not for the appointment vetting, these numerous Uncle Obama shills would still be cheating. Given the HUGE percentage of appointee’s getting caught cheating on their taxes, via the extra vetting, I think a vetting of each and every politician in America would be warranted at this point.

Looks and sounds to me like tax cheating by our elected politicians is a common place occurence. Something should be done about that.

A woman in my Master’s program worked for the firm that did one of the SCOTUS Justice’s income tax returns. The specifics don’t matter but it was one of the “she” justices. Several times and especially this time of year, the Justice and her spouse would have to come in to sign stuff. The firm treated these brief meetings as they would a combined visit of the President, Pope, the Queen of England. Far beyond the normal making sure the conference room was clean and getting somebody to bring in pastries.

For accountants yes. That is their job. Every accountant I have even gone asks about receipts and proof. Of course it could be simplified, but the lawyers and accounts lobby would never allow it. As far as enforcement, how can so many elected people be cheats, where is the IRS? Are the giving out get out of jail cards to elected cheats?

I have no love for the nominee Sebelius. As governor of Kansas she was a twit. I have little respect for the Obama administration or most of the Dems in congress. However, I think night2bright has the right of it. The tax code is too extensive and complex for even accountants to correctly do taxes or IRS examiners to audit taxes. How can we blame nominees whose personal taxes are the farthest thing from their minds, just like the rest of us. If anything this demonstrates to the world and I hope to the dems in congress, that the US tax code needs to be simplified. I believe Obama has a plan for this with his simplified reporting form. How much did you make last year? Send it in.

And not all politicians are crooks. Not all dems are crooks, and contrary to the opinion of the kos kids, not all repubs are crooks either. However those that aren’t need to get on those who are. Loxodonta on March 31, 2009 at 8:23 PM

Random but related thought.

Virtually all of the filthy liar’s nominees have had ethical issues. Some were serious enough that it merited withdrawal (Richardson, Daschle), some criminals got through with a full court press by the administration (Geithner), most are somewhere in-between where the criminals and ethically challenged actually get confirmed (Clinton et. al.).

In short, the filthy liar has surrounded himself with equally shady characters when he needs to be surrounding himself with individuals unquestioned reputation and ethics. It’s one thing to elect an untested socialist from South Chicago but that doesn’t mean we want to transform the nation into Calumet City, IL.

There is a way to test that: Start appointing conservative GOP’ers to Cabinet positions. See how many accept and then get hit with the back tax problem.

See, that’s the difference between libtards and regular folks. After tax cheat #2 got outed, uh, you’d think the next guy to get offered the job would say “thanks but no thanks, I’ve got tax problems; don’t want to embarrass you even more”. No, no, no. Tards just can’t walk away from power.

So, they accept and then get offended that somebody actually cares they’re tax cheats. See, they’ve already been told that they’re “the right person, in fact, the only person, for the job”. How does a crack head just walk away from an unlimited supply of crack?
