Pro-abortion groups freak out over license plates

One might think that a license plate that emphasized choice would please the people who style themselves as “pro-choice”. Not in Virginia, though, as Democratic Governer and DNC chair Tim Kaine has discovered. Kaine approved a new option for license plates that displays the phrase, “Choose Life”, and pro-abortion groups have hit the roof:
Tim Kaine, the Virginia governor and President Barack Obama’s hand-picked choice as the head of the Democratic National Committee, infuriated abortion-rights groups Monday by signing legislation that gives abortion foes a long-sought victory.
Kaine brushed off intense lobbying by abortion rights supporters in Richmond to sign a bill that allows Virginia motorists to advertise their anti-abortion views by sporting “Choose Life” specialty license plates. …
“It is surprising that Governor Kaine would do this, but it’s all the more surprising that he would do it as chair of the DNC,” said Paulette McElwain, the president of the Virginia League for Planned Parenthood.
McElwain exchanged numerous calls with the governor’s office over the license plates and organized a grass roots effort that logged more than 2,000 calls to the governor’s staff.
“We provided him with abundant information,” she said. “We’re terribly disappointed that he decided to sign it.”
In Washington, NARAL/Pro-Choice America channeled more than 17,000 emails and 200 calls to the DNC urging Kaine to veto the bill.
“It is unfortunate that, even after receiving thousands of messages from Virginians and pro-choice activists across the country, Gov. Kaine has opted to sign a bill that advances a divisive political ideology at the expense of women’s health,” NARAL/Pro-Choice America president Nancy Keenan said in a statement.
The license plate doesn’t say, “Stop abortion” or “Make women sick”. It says “Choose Life”, and shows a simple drawing of the faces of two children. How is that a “divisive political ideology”? Successful gestation is an ideology?
More to the point, why is the phrase “Choose Life” such a threat to NARAL and Planned Parenthood? At least for the latter, convincing fewer women to have abortions cuts into their revenue stream. They’re going to lose money if women “choose life” and they’ll get to kill fewer fetuses.
And isn’t more than a little ironic that NARAL/Pro-Choice America has such a heated reaction to the phrase “choose life“?
Many states now have specialty license plate programs that allow various groups to promote their mission. Kaine noted when he signed off on the Choose Life plate that Planned Parenthood could come up with its own, but that he had little choice but to approve the request on his desk. All they need is 350 people to prepay a $25 fee for a plate that says, “Kill your fetus,” and they’re good to go.
Kaine himself is a moderately pro-life politician, alhough he promised not to actually act on it as Governor. The pro-abortion lobby feels betrayed by a license plate. Nothing proves their radical absolutism in pursuit of abortion better than this kerfuffle.

I wonder what they think of George Michael’s ‘choose life’ theme back in the 80’s and 90’s. They’re probably OK with that since he’s gay and all. Gayness gets you membership at the liberal OKness I guess.

I don’t see this group going ape over the divisive political ideoplogy over the Washington DC license plates…you know, the one that says “taxation without representation?” That’s also the license plate that was created unilaterally by the DC government, btw.

A child could understand. Why not the democrat party?
jeff_from_mpls on March 31, 2009 at 9:37 AM
To be fair, it is a tactic endorsement of one side. Hypothetically, they’d have the save problem with “choose death.” They’d prob want something along the lines of “choose life, or don’t.”
Trent1289 on March 31, 2009 at 9:37 AM
Well perhaps they could come up with their own design showing a dead infant and the words: “Choose Death”.
carbon_footprint on March 31, 2009 at 9:38 AM
They’re afraid there might be one less dead baby.
Pro-choice is a euphemism for murder.
davidk on March 31, 2009 at 9:40 AM
they’re just ticked because license plates showing an aborted fetus with the phrase “kill babies” wouldn’t sell as many plates and therefore not raise funds for their cause.
gatorboy on March 31, 2009 at 9:40 AM
My Minnesota “Support Our Troops” license plate will probably have to go away too, it’s divisive and an affront to MorOn.org and Code Pink.
Good on Kaine for sticking to his guns and following the law rather than the outraged outrageousness from the ding-dongs.

George Michael was expressing the joyness of his life as a happy gay man, and the future choice to be in a relationship with another man and still have the freedom to cruise other guys in public restrooms.

Or maybe a license plate slogan that says: “This statement is both true and false.”
Pretty much sums up moral relativism.
jeff_from_mpls on March 31, 2009 at 9:43 AM
Like the governor said, if Planned Parenthood or whoever comes up with a license plate, he’ll approve it too. The answer to speech you don’t like is more speech, not telling the other guy to shut up.
Sekhmet on March 31, 2009 at 9:44 AM
The ACLU tried to force Indiana to stop allowing vehicle owners to choose a license plate with “In God We Trust” on it. The ACLU lost last year.
Great how these organziations that alledgedly support choice want to squash it.
WashJeff on March 31, 2009 at 9:45 AM
This just shows that NARAL, Planned Parenthood, the NAG Girls and Statism itself is a death cult. These people love death; death of unborn children in the womb, death of children who have survived an abortion, and later in life, euthenasia of the sick and mentally ill. Statism is evil and always will be.

vitaatcaritas on March 31, 2009 at 9:45 AM
abundant information about what, exactly? I’m trying to figure what logic was used to try to talk Kaine out of approving the plate.

We’ve had the same plate in Florida for some time now. I have them on all my cars. I wasn’t living here when they first came out but I recall hearing about the same “outrage” when they became available. It’s just another example of the left allowing only speech they approve of.
crusader1145 on March 31, 2009 at 9:47 AM
How soon before they organize “civil disobedience” against cars with the license plates?
ctmom on March 31, 2009 at 9:47 AM
Don’t these people claim that they want to make abortion safe, legal, and RARE?
They give away their true motivation with protests like this. They want to make abortion the only option for women who are having questions or doubts.
There was a big protest locally over a counselling clinic that actually let women know all of their options, even adoption. As well as letting them know what kinds of support would be available if they decided to keep their children.
MarkTheGreat on March 31, 2009 at 9:47 AM
I wouldn’t put that on my car out of fear that someone would shoot me or run me off the road. I don’t understand the need for controversial plates, it’s just asking for trouble.

Heh. I didn’t vote for Kaine, but I’m glad he did this. Though the above is also true, and I expect the pro-choice folks will have their own version soon. The whole thing is silly, people drive around with bumper stickers that say the same, why not have it on a license plate?

Isn’t “choose life” part of the pro-choice dogma or is the only acceptable choice in pro-choice movement the choice of death?

MarkTheGreat on March 31, 2009 at 9:49 AM
As a pro-choicer, I have no problem with the plate unless there is some kind of regulation forbidding political statements on license plates. Pleae let’s not play innocent and pretend that “Choose Life” is not a political statement. It is. It is the motto of the political movement to ban all abortion.
Chekote on March 31, 2009 at 9:49 AM
No. The phrase would be the oft-used pro-abortion slogan Every Child a Wanted Child. But that would take up too much space on the license plate, so they’d have to shorten it. Maybe — No Child Unwanted. Wait — isn’t that what Choose Life means?
unclesmrgol on March 31, 2009 at 9:49 AM
It’s a license plate, not a fu*king soapbox or a billboard.
Both sides need to go get a bumper sticker and stfu.
In the 70’s, the provincial government in Quebec had the stupid idea to only require a rear license plate. This led to an annoying whoring up of the front license plate into everything from Pepsi ads to political statements to hackneyed FU*K WINTER/MY OTHER CAR IS A PORSCHE/I HONK FOR GEESE/etc cliches to beloved cartoon characters peeing on the competition’s truck. Epic, epic fail.
It’s a license plate. It has one purpose. Let it do its job.

Like most Libs, they only like choice if you choose the same way they do. Examples:
Freedom of speech – as long as your speech is tolerant, understanding, and otherwise filtered.
Also – you’re free to put an effigy of Pres. Bush in your yard, but not a Christmas tree.
Freedom of the press – as long as your articles support the Democrats.
Freedom of Assembly – as long as you’re marching for a Leftist cause.
Freedom to organize in the workplace – as long as you unionize.
Free trade – as long as we “protect American jobs”, don’t pay “excessive” salaries, and give loans to people that can’t repay them.

It is gut wrenching how so many people are so tirelessly dedicated to the abortion death mill cause.
Anyone who believes that true evil does not exist, has never been on the inside of an abortion clinic, or is too morally and intellectually bankrupt to notice it.
Not content with millions of murdered children every year, they also want to kill any sort of alternative message.
I am glad I have a soul and a mind and am not a pro-abort.

That depends if you dismiss those who have a position based simply on a label rather than hearing them out. Anyone who is truly patriotic about America is “pro-choice”, because this country stands for the individual’s right to make choices about how they will live their life without the state making those choices for them. Just because feminists and neo-eugenics creeps have hijacked the phrase doesn’t mean we can’t still claim it.
“Pro-choice” means being in favor of every American’s right to make their own decisions, be them about firearms ownership, what church they choose to go to, what they want to eat, where they want to live, what job they want, etc. Lots of those choices are disliked by others. The beauty of this nation is the protection of those choices from the law, while still being subject to all the consequences those decisions carry(well, unless you choose not to pay your mortgage).

Anti-abortion, but pro-choice: I hope we can get to the point where abortions are no longer performed (except for rape/danger to the mother/etc), but I accept that this imperfect world is not there yet – especially with jacka$$es (like, say, the Pope) railing against birth control and ludicrously suggesting that abstention is the ONLY thing that should be taught, or people using abortion itself as a form of birth control.

Keep government out of your bedroom. Too long for a plate. We need something shorter. Any ideas?
