Open thread: Polls close in NY-20; Update: Murphy by 65 votes? Update: Thousands of absentees

posted at 9:28 pm on March 31, 2009 by Allahpundit

The boss is spot on: If we lose, it means nothing, and if we win, it means everything. This is Gillibrand’s district, which used to be solid red until she stole a victory there a few years ago by pretending to be a Blue Dog. The question is whether bailout/stimulus fatigue will drive it back into our column or whether The One — who finally endorsed the Democrat a few days ago — can keep it blue. More background here from MKH, noting that Murphy is now a slight favorite to win after trailing early on by 16 points. Jim Tedisco, the Republican, tried to make up the difference yesterday by campaigning through the night. It feels like Groundhog Day at this point. Will the GOP see its shadow or we will have six more years of political winter?

I don’t want to get people too excited, but if Tedisco pulls this out we might just be in for a humpbot cameo.

Update: Live results here. With 206 of 610 precincts reporting, Tedisco leads by four.

Update: Dave Weigel snarks, “Jim Tedisco’s ability to blow a 20-point lead proves that the GOP is back, baby.”

Update: With 505 of 610 precincts reporting, it’s Tedisco by … less than one percent.

Update: With all 610 precincts reporting, it’s Murphy 77,344, Tedisco 77,279. Are there 66 absentee ballots out there for the GOP? Should only take us a few weeks and, perhaps, a long court battle to find out!

Needless to say, there shall be no humpbot tonight.

Chocolate Bunny Kill

Update: There won’t be a winner for a long, long time.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Murphy had 77,344 votes to Tedisco’s 77,279. Somewhere between 6,000 and 10,000 military and absentee ballots remain uncounted, according to the Associated Press, and overseas absentee ballots will continue be accepted until April 13. In short, no winner will be declared any time soon.

Yeah, I remember that comment Obama made about 57 states and he actually said three to go so he thought there were 60. I know, cuz I was sitting there with Joe Biden and it came on right after FDR came on the TV in 29 and addressed the American People when he was President in 29 and told them to chill the hell out about the Depression. Then we went down to Katies Restaurant and I squared Joe away about which article of the Constitution governed the office of the VP. You know cuz he got it wrong in the debate. He met an Indian guy there and asked him which 7-11 he worked at.

hawkdriver on March 31, 2009 at 11:28 PM

capitulus,

Sadaam also routinely violated the terms of the cease-fire aggreement he signed onto by firing at the aircraft patroling the no-fly zones.

I was piloting one of those aircraft. Maybe your perspective would be a little bit different if your were at the business end of a (thankfully out of range) surface to air missile.

Sadaam broke the deal and faced the wheel (consequences)

So you’re saying that an attempted assassination of an ex-President of the US, as ordered by the head of state of a foreign country that the US was at war with only a short time earlier, isn’t a Casus Belli? You’re cool with that, huh? That’s just a big joke to you, right?

That was just dumb. For one thing, the red states are a geographic area. They include all sorts of people. For instance, those drop outs in the inner cities I was referring to by and large come from blue states. People who come from smaller communities in the hinterlands by and large actually do finish high school.

Which is more than can be said for a lot of Obama’s base.

And the stem cell thing I just do not get. I know that Obama signed some executive order saying we could destroy at tax payers expense all the embryos we want, but he was unaware of the Dickey Wicker thing in the House bill that made the order moot. If he had actually read the bill he would have realized that Congress has stated since 1996 that federal money is not to be used to destroy embryos.

Dummie.

Terrye, you’re just too logical, spouting facts and figures like most of the regulars here. Unfortunately, ignorant and rather stupid trolls like capitulus (and its alter ego getalife) neither understand nor care. They don’t want to become educated, they only want to believe in the wonderfulness of utopian dreams. Emos are all like that, no reasoning, no understanding of cause/effect, no ability to actually apply logic. Unfortunately, lazy students who don’t learn, fall into that trap due to the tendency of people to want to be liked, and then don’t achieve those things necessary to become productive and valuable members of society. Our shining example for the world is beginning to look like old bath water circling the drain, helped along by the dunce in chief and his idiotic ideas and minions.

Political Debate 2001-2008

Liberal: What’s the deal with the incredibly low education levels in states that voted for Bush, seems like people ignorant of domestic and world affairs voted for this guy. Great, we’re ruled by the ignorant masses.

Conservative: Sorry your elitist Ivy League educated liberal couldn’t appeal to “real America.” We don’t really think a college education is worth much a damn what with the liberal professors and “intellectuals” who think that brain smarts matters more than core family values. We’re just fine believing what we believe here in the real America.

DeathToMediaHacks:

The more interesting issue is that Democrats did well with high school drop outs and college professors, the very rich and the very poor.

The middle is getting squeezed out of existence. and then what?

Terrye on March 31, 2009 at 11:47 PM

Conservative: Those ignorant ghetto residents stole the election, dropping out of school, not educating themselves how can they think they even have the right to vote. Look at their education test scores, frickin jungle bunnies.

Liberal: Uh…so are you guys the elitists now?

DeathToMediaHacks on March 31, 2009 at 11:42 PM

Nah, not much has changed. The Democrats still need ignorance to be successful.

ddrintn on March 31, 2009 at 11:47 PM

I don’t think either you or OBL will be in any shape to speak. As far as Laura Bush is concerned, she is a classy lady and God forgives. She will be there too, along with the man that kept your stupid ass safe for the past seven years.

HornetSting on March 31, 2009 at 11:44 PM

That settles it – if you get the Decider and his zonked out wife then I’m happy being on the other team. Remember, you get #3 to sign something for me and I’ll find out OBL’s secrets and might even throw in who killed Vince Foster. Deal??

I’m a Bachelor of Science in Professional Aeronautics.

Most of the people I work with have Masters in the same. We go to NASCAR Races. What’s your point you bigot?

hawkdriver on March 31, 2009 at 11:45 PM

Mine is a Bachelors of Fine Art in Classical Music/Piano with an emphasis in Theory.

Good God, the moron has to go after Laura Bush. That is really pathetic. I guess she made the mistake of not being ashamed of her country.

DeathToMediaHacks on March 31, 2009 at 11:42 PM

Nice try. Your liberal media are the ones who made those generalities. They were the ones who used class warfare to act as though Conservatives were out of touch old rich white guys in the past. It was the media who then proclaimed that we were illiterate NASCAR morons who where too stupid or bigoted to vote for “the greatest man who ever lived”.

Nice propaganda Saul.

Punchenko on March 31, 2009 at 11:51 PM

For starters, fix the damn ballot boxes,

and return to the old fashion, non computer

ballots!

Like this:

Republican————————-O!

Democrat Communist—————–O!

——————–
——————–

Put the x in the circle, any line outside the box,its crap!

Elininate all Computer ballots!

The goal is to stop Capitulus Crapitulus and his or hers ilk
from frauding the voting system!

Thats the good old fashion way,in Ontario Canada, and it
eleminates all fraud!

And,have the boxes locked and accounted for!

Or allow ACORN and Team Liberal,to hack into the computer
ballots and keep scamming the votes!

And,how about a Voter Card,with your fingerprint!

I have watched Liberal fraud, steal the American Election,
its time to end this nightmare!!!

A complete voter voting overhaul is needed!

The more interesting issue is that Democrats did well with high school drop outs and college professors, the very rich and the very poor.

And marginally well with middle class voters also. I think the posters who go on and on about “ignorant ghetto residents” electing Obama are as stupid as the morons who went on and on about “ignorant white trash” electing Bush two times. The reality is that while certain Democgraphics can be particularly Democratic or Republican neither party has a monopoly on ignorance and (as we’ve seen from the wave of white collar financial crime) on criminality that hurts the society as a whole.

I feel like the people who make these claims actually know nothing about why people win elections at certain times. A truly honest conservative would recognize that Barack Obama basically ran the *exact* same campaign Bush ran in 2000. Go back and watch some of those debates and speeches. The similarities are striking. Outsiders tend to win after two terms of the same guy.

And if your party overseas policies which seem to be pro rich people and then lots and lots of rich people seem to screw over the U.S. economy in deep systemic ways, well duh your party is going to be out of power for a while. That’s not the MSM or ignorance, it’s political reality. Deal.

Good point – and that is why I refrain from going after the Decider’s dad. The poor guy had to wake up next to the guy from the Quaker Oats box every morning. Sure, she tried to hide it with a blue dress and pearls, but still – there was the Quaker Oats guy.

Sad.

I’ve a Masters in picking up cigarette butts, polishing brass, knocking down Jim at the VFW, and 400yard Sub-Minute of Arc. What’s the point?

The election process is corrupted. Period. Until we all have the brains to recognize an ‘X’ on the right side or the left side of the page we are doomed as a society. Lefty one or Righty one.

Hopefully Tedisco goes with the help of these absentee ballots in a margin that would not merit a recount or a fiasco in the courts.
