Video: Maher salutes American troops

posted at 1:35 pm on March 30, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

I stopped watching Bill Maher a long time ago, and it’s moments like this that remind me why he’s a waste of broadcast air time. Maher complains that we need to bring home the troops from World War II by pulling out of Germany and Japan, and gives us this pithy little “salute” to American fighting forces:

Forget about bringing the troops home from Iraq. We need to get the troops home from World War II. Can anybody tell me why, in 2009, we still have more than 50,000 troops in Germany and 30,000 in Japan? At some point, these people are going to have to learn to rape themselves. [boos] I’ll ignore that.

Recall, if you will, when Maher claimed that the 9/11 terrorists had more courage than Air Force pilots and/or Navy commanders. “We have been the cowards. Lobbing cruise missiles from two thousand miles away. That’s cowardly. Staying in the airplane when it hits the building. Say what you want about it. Not cowardly. You’re right.” ABC cut ties with Maher after that statement, leading to his HBO show.

Will HBO keep Maher around after this despicable comment? Probably, unless enough people complain about it. HBO has less pressure in its subscription model; with no advertisers to boycott, HBO won’t have to worry about lost revenue in the traditional sense. If subscribers start lining up to cancel and cite Maher as a reason, however, that could have some impact.

I don’t watch the show anyway, as I said before, so I don’t really give a damn whether HBO gives him a platform or not. Maher crossed over to despicable years ago. Maybe it serves a good purpose to have a spotlight trained on him; we can find more examples of how the Left hates the military, rather than hearing them insist that they love the troops while trying their best to keep them from college campuses and recruiters out of their neighborhoods.

Update: Commenter 1GoodDaddy offers this information, for those wishing to communicate their displeasure with Maher:

How can I contact HBO to express my opinions about their programming?

You may contact HBO’s Consumer Affairs Department at 212-512-1208 Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM Eastern Time. You can also write to us using the link below.

Feel free to go at it.  I think, though, that HBO will tend to see this as an endorsement of Maher’s relevance than any threat to their business.

A Thank You to Our Troops

Knucklehead on March 30, 2009 at 2:26 PM

OK, I do remember seeing that. I will add that the applause I heard yesterday was louder and more sustained.

I’m sure our troops know most Americans support them and just shrug off scum-sucking vermin like Maher as the price we pay for freedom of speech.

Maher will die miserable. Heck, it’s quite ovevious he’s living in misery.

Eff him and the tools who sit in his audience.

JammieWearingFool on March 30, 2009 at 2:34 PM

I got a call once from my cable company offering me free HBO for three months if I added some service or another. I laughed out loud at that and told her that I wouldn’t have HBO in my home if they offered if free for life.

Jvette on March 30, 2009 at 2:36 PM

Hey Assclown, one of the reasons we’re in Japan because it’s a great place to forward deploy our ships at Yokosuka, rather than send them to the Middle East from the West or East coast all the time.

Undeniably, forward deployment is critical to operational success. But you see, we Assclowns are really into irony. Who, do you think, are the champions of wage determinations, environmental and land-use regulations? By making it so expensive to base troops in the U.S. they are making it necessary for us to follow a policy that they despise. We Assclowns derive great enjoyment from that fact.

Sopranos, Rome, Deadwood, Entourage….all good TV, while R rated/adult variety obviously.

I was discussing a potential contract with a contractor at lunch. He was telling me how profound Bill Maher was in his positions. I’m giving the project to his competitor. I can’t trust a person so totally illiterate to handle millions of dollars for my business. Thanks, Bill. You helped me from making a bad mistake.

What do you expect from a POS like BM. This is the same guy who went to a Halloween party dressed as a dead Steve Irwin just a couple of months (if not sooner) after Irwin was killed in that accident.

“Profound”? Wow.

Bill Maher is a professional jackass – nothing more than that, and nothing less than that. If somebody gets off on watching people like Maher or Howard Stern as a guilty pleasure, that’s nobody’s business but their own.

But to BRAG about it?

In a perfect world, you could report someone like that guy to Social Services for his own safety. But in America today, you’d probably be the one who got locked up.

I think he is referring to the unfortunate incidents in Okinawa over the past few years.

In other words, if we pull out US troops, the only people left to rape the local nationals will be themselves.

A rather pathetic joke.

Mine wasnt the only complaint apparently according to the cs rep.I was not rude to her,I stated what I thought and informed her that I would be sending this video on to every service member I know, and as you all are aware, after 23 years as a milspouse I know a lot of military folks that wont be too pleased with this.I am including the cs number along with the video. Thank you once again Mr.Morrissey for tolerating this BS long enough to keep us informed about it.I hope BM has the delightful chance to meet some of our men and women in uniform and tells them personally how he feels…

Simple math proves that anyone subscribing to HBO is inadvertantly supporting Mr. POS Maher. Take The Hint!

DannoJyd on March 30, 2009 at 3:09 PM

Total waste off effort to call HBO’s customer service and bitch. The only effective way is to call your service provider to cancel HBO and cite “Real Time” as the reason.

Take The Hint!

DannoJyd on March 30, 2009 at 3:09 PM

Exactly right. Complaining to the minimum wage worker at a HBO’s call center won’t do anything. To make this effective you have to have the guts to call your cable or satellite provider, cancel HBO, and specifically cite Maher as the reason.

Hey, I got it HBO and Starz for free as a promotion but called to cancel. Talk about some shock and awe…

I suspect he’s tired of his show and wants out.

That is Spangdahlem Air Base, September 11th, 2007. We had a genuine threat called into the base a few days before. CNN had a crew there filming us at the gate. That’s me (on the left) with the blurry M4 Carbine strapped to my chest during a K9 alert on a rental car outside the main gate. We were already in our body armor because of the threat. The German media and CNN were poised across the street while we sent the robot in to check the car. They refused to listen to us as we demanded they step back from the robot. I started screaming “mach SCHNELL!” to get them away, but media the world over is quite stupid.

Maher is a piece of garbage. He has no idea the friendship we have with the German people. Jerk.

Otis B on March 30, 2009 at 3:26 PM

Um, isn’t he right on the larger point though? Our troops shouldn’t be used to prop up the economies of socialist Europeans who hate all non-left wing Americans. Of course he doesn’t think of it like that, but its still what the situation is.

Using the misdeeds of a few as an argument for a withdrawal from NATO and an abandonment of agreements with Japan and, perhaps by extension, Taiwan, is a nasty way to go about doing so.

His credibility suffers as a result, and being expected to provide a reaasonable argument following those ridiculous comments is hardly worth the time.

Who’s more bitter- Matthews or Maher. Maher desperately tried to be Michael Moore and Matthews thought he was going to get the Meet The Press job or become a senator. Failures all around. Maher thrives on being inflammatory and still carries around a chip on his shoulder for losing “Politically Incorrect” due to his remarks about the 9-11 terrorists. He clearly thinks he is “misunderstood.”

Well, here’s what I understand about him. He spews out this kind of garbage purely for effect. What he really believes, I have no idea. I stopped watching him because he is an unapologetic misogynist, and because he won’t stop banging on about how religion is the root of all evil.

To me, the trouble with a guy like Maher is similar to the scene in Cabaret where the guy is dancing with the monkey and everyone is laughing along – until you realize that the monkey represents something else and it becomes suddenly not so funny any more.

I’d be willing to bet that Maher wouldn’t think that scene was funny at all.

Maher is like the Gremlin in the land of Soros

Nature abhors a vacuum and the emptiness inside this raging Gremlin has been filled with spite.

My cable is filled with ads for Maher’s anti religious vehicle.

If he eliminated all the symbols of his enemy, flag, country, soldiers, church people, reactionaries and non conformists he would still be left with his enemy.

I think Maher understands unless he eliminates the human race itself his enemy will still live. Even then he will find he has been fighting an enemy within himself as we all are.

The Romans faced the conundrum and dismantled many perceived enemies in the arena, yet the excess did not give comfort and they lost the will to fight for their empire, a suicidal bunch in the end

entagor on March 30, 2009 at 4:46 PM

Other Meany-Maher mutterings & malice:

–To celebrate the Halloween that came right after the beloved Steve Irwin was killed by a sting ray, Maher donned a khaki shirt and shorts, and he had a fake sting ray tail attached to his chest.

–Maher was slapped with a $9 million palimony suit by an ex-girlfriend who alleges that he subjected her to physical and verbal abuse, including “degrading racial comments”. The plaintiff was Nancy Johnson, a Black model and former flight attendant.

–Maher: “When you look at beliefs in such things as, do you go to heaven, is there a devil, we have more in common with Turkey and Iran and Syria than we do with European nations and Canada and nations that, yes, I would consider more enlightened than us.”

–Maher: “I have two dogs — if I had two retarded children, I’d be a hero. And yet the dogs, which are pretty much the same thing. What? They’re sweet. They’re loving. They’re kind, but they don’t mentally advance at all. Dogs are like retarded children.”

Many of the things Maher has said about religion are too obscene and grotesque to repeat.

For a rebuttal to the charges Maher makes against religion, see my blog post “Bad or Good?”

Here’s a great twist on rendition: guys abducting American cijust rizens (like him) and dropping them off in different countries in order to liberate them from American oppression. I think having this clown wake up from his chloroform nap in an Iranian or Noeth Korean village would really do him some good. And for good measure, slip some forged citizenship papers into his pocket, so he can really feel at home.

1. The U.S. military won’t give a second thought to this tools joke.

2. This tool would never say such a thing in the presence of military personnel, especially Marines, SEALs, or Rangers.

3. It wasn’t the most vile thing said on that show. Guest panelist Mos Def said it was Bush policies at Fannie Mae over the last 8 years that lead to our current economic crisis, and the audiance, oh that blissfully ignorant Maher audiance of his just clapped away at that view of the “history”.

4. Someone’s hero… Christopher Hitchens was sitting right beside Maher when he made the crack about the military. No one heard a peep out of Hitchens either.

Bill Maher is a racist! Bill Maher is anti-semitic! Bill Maher is a bigot!

What is Bill Maher? He has no power than that which you grant him. He is nothing without his HBO platform from which to spew his hatred. Does he speak for the majority of Americans? Does he speak for you? Bill Maher is nothing. He is celebrity, not a hero, not courageous, not brave! He knows nothing of the sacrifice my American brothers and sisters give on the battle field in the real war zone or on the battle field here at home. He knows nothing of the struggle of middle Americans trying to raise their children with ethics, values and morals. He espouses none of these things; instead he rails against them.

I like to think of Dirty Harry as the ultimate conservative and as he would say…

…Bill Maher “is a legend in his own mind.”

Uh, no thanks. Enjoy the nascar season though!

That’s OK – I’ll come over to your place.
Where you at?

I learned early on in the Army that I might have been put into a position at some point in time in which I may have gotten shot or blown up defending a few a$$holes who happened to wear the same uniform as myself…they were after all, fellow countrymen and brethren soldiers.

I guess that logic extends to the country at large.

Can’t throw out the baby with the bath water.

Or in Maher’s case, the thermometer with the vomit.

It was clearly a joke. When did Cons become avid users of the PC-Police? Apparently all jokes are now outlawed since we have a Democratic President.

I would really enjoy breaking that punk’s face open. If anyone has earned a good old fashioned a$$beating, it’s Bill “hung like a baby hamster” Maher.

If he had any guts at all, which he doesn’t, he would have Todd, Sarah, and Track Palin as guests on his crappy show.

Say it to their faces. I dare him.

I take it to be what he thinks is a clever way to say they should f**k themselves.

He is disparaging our troops, Jvette. He means that our troops rape Germans and Japanese.

Jokes are funny. That wasn’t funny, it was propaganda disguised as humor. What is good for the goose, is good for the gander. Make him suffer for being a jerk. He deserves all of these comments and more. He’s intentionally hurtful, he gets no sympathy from me. It’s a cumulative effect from several years.
