Video: Maher salutes American troops

posted at 1:35 pm on March 30, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

I stopped watching Bill Maher a long time ago, and it’s moments like this that remind me why he’s a waste of broadcast air time. Maher complains that we need to bring home the troops from World War II by pulling out of Germany and Japan, and gives us this pithy little “salute” to American fighting forces:

Forget about bringing the troops home from Iraq. We need to get the troops home from World War II. Can anybody tell me why, in 2009, we still have more than 50,000 troops in Germany and 30,000 in Japan? At some point, these people are going to have to learn to rape themselves. [boos] I’ll ignore that.

Recall, if you will, when Maher claimed that the 9/11 terrorists had more courage than Air Force pilots and/or Navy commanders. “We have been the cowards. Lobbing cruise missiles from two thousand miles away. That’s cowardly. Staying in the airplane when it hits the building. Say what you want about it. Not cowardly. You’re right.” ABC cut ties with Maher after that statement, leading to his HBO show.

Will HBO keep Maher around after this despicable comment? Probably, unless enough people complain about it. HBO has less pressure in its subscription model; with no advertisers to boycott, HBO won’t have to worry about lost revenue in the traditional sense. If subscribers start lining up to cancel and cite Maher as a reason, however, that could have some impact.

I don’t watch the show anyway, as I said before, so I don’t really give a damn whether HBO gives him a platform or not. Maher crossed over to despicable years ago. Maybe it serves a good purpose to have a spotlight trained on him; we can find more examples of how the Left hates the military, rather than hearing them insist that they love the troops while trying their best to keep them from college campuses and recruiters out of their neighborhoods.

Update: Commenter 1GoodDaddy offers this information, for those wishing to communicate their displeasure with Maher:

How can I contact HBO to express my opinions about their programming?

You may contact HBO’s Consumer Affairs Department at 212-512-1208 Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM Eastern Time. You can also write to us using the link below.

Feel free to go at it.  I think, though, that HBO will tend to see this as an endorsement of Maher’s relevance than any threat to their business.

It was clearly a joke. When did Cons become avid users of the PC-Police? Apparently all jokes are now outlawed since we have a Democratic President.

You mean that “Black” President…The one that turned the south lawn into a watermelon patch, the card that got someone fired because someone can’t take a joke…who is the PC-Police?
Try telling a joke about the “Black” President and see where that gets you…now tell a joke about military raping women.

Who was he agreeing with, oh perpetually ignorant one? Care to know?

P.S. The quote about the troops needing to rape themselves is despicable indeed. Any large group of people will result in crimes committed including most heinous. America has no business maintaining an empire, and one doesn’t need to become a pig to argue that.

Hey Maher, I’ve got a great USO tour set-up where you could tell that joke. You get to stand on this stage in front of this back-drop that looks like a wall . . . and you get to tell the joke blind-folded, smoking a cigarette . . . It’d be the laugh of your life, I promise.

Bill Maher is a dork. He’s the Pee Wee Herman if politics.

JellyToast on March 30, 2009 at 6:28 PM

Dinesh D’Souza, who was NOT arguing that American pilots were cowards.

Did he object to Maher’s agreement? No. As did Limbaugh who defended Maher’s words. Because they both understood the context. And D’Souza explicitly stated that he disagreed with Bush that the terrorists were cowards. As does any reasonable person.

To say that someone who’s willing to die himself is a physical coward is to put the English language on its head. Words have meaning.

radiofreevillage on March 30, 2009 at 6:31 PM

LOL he meant that the Japanese needed to learn how to rape….. hahahahahahaha

OK. that actually makes sense. Sorry, I just came home and running around doing errands while reading the blog.

I’l admit I do feel like a dork now. What’s Ed’s outrage about then?

radiofreevillage on March 30, 2009 at 6:33 PM

P.P.S. Still, the insult is there. You people are confusing me when I’m too busy paying attention.

At any case, personally my opinion of Maher has been decreasing lately. But I think you need to be outraged selectively. I’m much more annoyed by his obsession with “evil corporations” than I am with his much more politically incorrect but essentially true statements.

rob verdi on March 30, 2009 at 7:37 PM

radiofreevillage at 6:31 PM-

Words have meaning.

So do the moral concepts behind them.

Cowardice is exactly what the terrorist jihadists demonstrated most nakedly on 9/11.

They sucker-punched a group of unarmed and unwary people… to the point of mass-murder… and, rather than face the consequences of their craven and despicable crimes, offed their own sorry asses [and slaughtered thousands of unsuspecting civilians… men, women and children] in order to escape the possible pain of any righteous justice.

Being willing to merely die is often the most cowardly way out of a situation.

Killing unarmed civilians after tricking them into submission is hardly the work of the brave.

They were psychopathic cowards of the lowest type, equivalent to a punk beating and old lady to death for her rent money and then shooting themselves in the head when the cops show up and surround them, rather than risk being roughed up in prison.

Moral imbecility is a risible symptom of a weak intelligence.

profitsbeard on March 30, 2009 at 7:38 PM

Maher has always struck me as a developmentally challenged man-child. He has the emotional and psychological maturity of a toddler who has learned that shouting an obscenity will cause the adults to stop talking and focus their attention on him for a few moments.

He’s too pathetic to hate; he truly embodies the concept of being beneath contempt.

cruadin on March 30, 2009 at 7:44 PM

My only child (son) is in the USAF in S Korea. When is maggot Maher going to ask for his “return”.

I will be calling my cable company tomorrow and cancelling HBO. The price I pay isn’t worth this trash. And yes, I will tell them the reason.

I guess Bush and Cheney avoiding any combat in their younger years was just a coincidence? Republicans calling out Mahrer when their own leaders were chickenhawks and you can add Rumsfield to the list too. Better clean up your own house before you start ripping on someone’s record. Republican chickenhawks, like Bill kristol and el rushbo. Talking tough but peeing their own pants. Nice track record goopers.

Yes.. he has even told a few race jokes about Obama. You are acting like a bunch of feminists who read a transcript from an Andrew Dice Clay show.

Maher is irrelevant.

As you say AP, it’s better that he keeps throwing these despicable views up where it’s recorded forever. That way when the libs start screaming that we need to intervene militarily here or there, or start whining that we need fiscal conservatism, we can shove maher right up their arses and let THEM twist in the wind.

So where’s Reid running around the Senate with his panties in a wad circulating a “letter” amongst the Congress to “denounce” Maher’s over the top charge.

How difficult could it be?

Reid got 41 Senators to sign a “letter” a while back?

Here Ill help!

Maher’s comment was a “disgusting attack“, and stated, “In a single moment on his show, Maher managed to question the patriotism of men and women in uniform who have put their lives on the line and many who died for his right to sit safely in his air-conditioned studio peddling hate.”

How hard can it be reid? Just cut and past!

DSchoen on March 30, 2009 at 9:38 PM

Who cares what Maher says, let him exercise his First Amendment rights, so what. The way the world is going, at some point he may need his ass covered, and someone may use their First Amendment right to walk away.

He is nothing new, he throws bombs, if bombs come back, he’ll want protection from those he threw the bombs at. Growing up, we called them P#$$IES.

Bill Ayers used to throw bombs(literally) at Cops, then demanded the protection of the Police when pressed by FOX reporters at home. What would you call him besides a terrorist? P#$$Y!!!

Bill Maher is cocky, but his cockiness is covered by personal security, screw him, let him spew his venom, anyone believe in Karma? He will be paid back in spades.

Sit down on Ferguson toilet.

Relax anal sphincter muscles.

Ahhh!

First of all, a “chickenhawk” in the bird world is a vicious attack bird, one that makes a living ripping the hearts out of any prey it finds.

The word “chickenhawk” refers to several (5 or so) closely related raptors. For you public ed Democrats, that means “a hawk”. Big bird that flies in sky and attacks and eats little birds.

They have been regularly seen taking down prey outweighing them, in some cases much larger.

But I digress. After all, the term “chickenhawk” went out of fashion on 9/10.

The whole “chickenhawk” meme is total BDS horse hockey anyway, because it ignores facts. It’s a generated hatred of something that the haters simply cannot comprehend.

Democrats happily supported an admitted draft-dodger who served 2 terms as President.

They also gave a pass to another Democrat President, LBJ, whose intimate dealings with Halliburton make the evil Dick Cheney look like a fool who just fell off the turnip truck.

Having a decorated military person as President is no guarantee of success. JFK is proof of that. And his successor, the Halliburton guy, also served in the military.

Nixon did too.

By the way, athensgeek, did you know that as President admitted draft-dodger Bill Clinton staged 4, count ‘em four, photo ops on US aircraft carriers?

That’s 4 times as many as the evil Bush did.

Hey Maher. I’d like to see the troops come home too.

My mom’s dad spent his first tour of duty in Europe. I look forward to meeting him some day. He’s been there since 1945. His dog-tags are still draped over his tombstone in Holland.

FU, you slimy bucket of puss.

GT on March 31, 2009 at 12:13 AM

Maher can say whatever he wants about our troops. The damage was done a long time ago and is reflected in the way that “todays military” thinks it needs to present itself. We can all boycott HBO all we want. The damage is done.

When our military thinks the only way to recruit people is to present itself as a way for a person to fulfill his or her own desires, we’ve already lost. When service to country no longer matters, but only service to self, joining the military is nothing more than a career move.

Kind of ironic considering that there is no company left today that offers a career. Just a job. Not the same thing.

The Mahers of the world won a long time ago. We live in a time when a commercial for “todays military” can’t show a young person telling their parent that they want to join the military to fight for and defend America. No. Not even after 9/11, which so many liberals still think was planned and carried out by the PNAC crowd as a modern day Pearl Harbor. Instead the parent is a saint for even listening to the kid.

Kid. My father was 17 when he joined the Navy. He didn’t do it as a career move. He did it to defend his country during WWII.

It’s funny how the “jokes” have changed. My father always used to tell us six kids “if I knew then what I know now I never would have left the Navy”.

He hated the Navy.

I had no idea this two-bit goober was still around. Last I saw him he had a lowly bit part on a “Murder,She Wrote” re-run my grandmother was watching. I think he played Roddy McDowell’s sidekick. How desperate can one get to get a role?
Maher apparently realized his lack of talent had him doomed to bit parts on tv shows. So, much like the talentless Andrew Dice Clay, he figured out that his only way to relevancy was to be an unhinged lunatic.

Yes. A lack of patriotism, immorality, moral equivocating, selfish liberal lifestyles and socialist ideas have all spread and taken a toll on our country. And it can be very disheartening.

But no. The Bill Mahers of the world have not already won. Your father did not fight for our country in vain, and it’s still worth fighting for. This culture war is not over.

————

Let those who have failed take courage,
Though the enemy seem to have won;
If he be in the wrong, though his ranks are strong,
The battle is not yet done.
For sure as the morning follows
The darkest hour of the night,
No question is ever settled
Until it is settled right.

My husband told me about this last night on the phone. He was clearly pissed off about it – we have friends stationed in Japan, and they are indeed honorable servicemen and women. I told my husband not to let it bother him, though – the mentally diseased often have no control over their outbursts, and so we shouldn’t take offense. Instead, we should feel sorry for people like Maher, as at this time, he’s too far gone for there to be a cure.

My life is a bit less stressful now that I have embraced liberalism as a mental disorder… their silly outbursts are just as uncontrollable as the tantrums of an autistic child. Just my take on things.

Maher is exactly the kind of Leftist narrow-mined bigot he pretends to despise on the Right. I stopped watching him years ago. Dennis Miller is MUCH funnier and always has been.

And yes, the 9/11 hijacker were cowards. Attacking civilians with military tactics and violence is cowardly.

It stuns me that the Libtards would say that they civilian humans somehow “deserved it”, but had this been 3000 bunnies, PETA would have advocated wiping out Afghanistan and half of Pakistan by now to let it be populated exclusively by donkeys & chickens.

I would love to tell Mr Maher that I was an army soldier in Germany once. I never raped anyone. As an MP, I had occasion to respond to a couple of sexual assault incidents. But for this jerk to state or imply that rapes were or are endemic to American troops in Germany, Japan or anywhere else is just plain wrong.

Ten Bill Mahers couldn’t make one US soldier, airman, sailor or Marine.
