Oh my: Dem strategists set to give Palin the Limbaugh treatment

posted at 5:55 pm on March 30, 2009 by Allahpundit

Like the man said, they’ve exhausted the use of Rush as an attention-getter. So they’re off to hunt bigger moose.

Slublog snarks that the over/under on references to Alinksy’s “pick the target and personalize it” rule in the comments to this post is four. I would have said 40. Don’t let me down.

“Her name conjures up all kinds of reactions in people’s minds,” Carville told me, adding that her association with the campaign will be used to portray the GOP as hidebound and to alienate moderates. “She’s an uncomfortable figure for a lot of Republicans,” Carville says. “They want to move beyond her. We like her.”

“Luckily, she seems to present us with an opportunity every few days,” added a senior Dem strategist. “You could say it’s a turkey shoot.”

Such efforts are aimed at the Dem base. But House Dem strategists hope she can be used to damage the GOP’s image with swing constituencies in the 2010 elections. “When she was campaigning, she rubbed suburban and independent women the wrong way,” one House Dem strategist says. “They are generally very moderate, and she’s a reminder of the extremism of the party and other aspects of it they dislike.”

Think they’re kidding? Have a look at the flier Democrat Scott Murphy just sent out in upstate New York. The obvious response here is “Great! It’s worked wonders for Rush.” And indeed, at least one progressive’s prepared to concede defeat in the Great Limbaugh War of ’09. But: (a) Rush has the time, platform, and incentive to fight daily skirmishes with Democrats while Palin doesn’t and (b) don’t forget that boosting Rush’s profile was the point of the White House’s strategy, on the theory that the public’s antipathy to him would bleed over to the GOP. Surely Emanuel et al. knew that a media war would increase Limbaugh’s ratings; they simply calculated that the political benefit of rebranding Republicans as Team Rush outweighed the cost of making his megaphone bigger. Maybe they’re wrong about that, maybe they’re not, but evidently they’re willing to double down and try the same strategy out on Palin. Exit question: Do gender politics make it more likely that they’ll overplay their hand with her than with Limbaugh? If they’re putting out one ad after another beating up on her while she’s lying low and taking care of business in Alaska, it’ll quickly seem gratuitous.

2. If the aim of the strategy is to drive down Palin’s numbers among independents, it could backfire on the Democrats. A Pew Research poll conducted last fall found that 41 percent of independents said that they thought the press had been too tough on the governor. Now that President Obama’s approval numbers are slipping, especially among independents, that key group could perceive the Democrat’s attacks on Palin the same way they saw the media attacks. If they think the Democrats are unfairly dissing Palin, there’s just no win there for the Dems.

Insight from Redstate.

Wethal on March 30, 2009 at 6:37 PM

They are going to go after her in hopes that she will respond to their attacks while she is conducting state business. Then their operatives in AK will be able to attack her with ethics charges and other crap making her legal bills grow. This is actually right out of Carville’s playbook of attacking ‘Bimbo Eruptions’ like when he was BJ’s hitman. He know’s how to attack women, but I believe he has underestimated this one.

Obama’s Approval Rating Slips Considerably Among Independents
Posted Mar 23, 2009

A total of 47% of independent voters approve of the way Obama is handling his job and 46% disapprove. In February, 53% of independents approved and 39% disapproved.

How does attacking the governor of a distant state address the way Independents are perceiving Obama’s job performance?

William Amos on March 30, 2009 at 6:38 PM

This will work in her favor, as it now gives her a huge opportunity to speak out against Obama and his Democrats and his policies. Every time they attack her in ads, she can appear on shows and radio to denounce the attacks and their policies.

Up to now, she’s been stuck in Alaska and unable to voice an opinion unless directly challenged. Now, she will be challenged and she can make herself a daily and weekly national presence.

The Dems just gave her a huge gift – national presence and national recognition.

Obama is doing a pretty good job of showing of the “moderation” in the Democratic Party. It may not matter what they do. It will all depend on the failure of Barack Obama. Which is pretty much all good for our side.

If Obama does bring back the economy… great. If he doesn’t… better.

How will the RNC and Romney,Jindal,Huckabee,Sanford, etc. react? Will they speak out against this tactic? Stay quiet and gleeful and let the DNC kneecap Palin? Will they jump on board and help destroy her?

Somehow, I see Huckabee commandeering the Anti-Palin express and being more than happy destroying her. (of course Allahpundit will be First mate).

ddrintn on March 30, 2009 at 6:49 PM

It makes Obama look juvenile and erratic. People will question why they are spending time on political strategy when the country is on fire. They are clearly worried about Obama’s popularity.

This also gives Palin a national voice again, she will have the opportunity to question the President’s actions more directly and in front of a larger audience.

doug1981 on March 30, 2009 at 6:17 PM

Exactly – why would a sitting President’s people waste time attacking a governor if she has no support? All she has to do is go about her current job of being governor of Alaska and let her supporters call the Dems on their behavior. That way she stays out of trouble with the petty alaskan ankle-biters and may even gain support from people who just think it’s petty for the Dems to be attacking her.

Dr Evil on March 30, 2009 at 6:51 PM

If Palin wanted to, she could stage a pre-emptive strike by going after the administration now, on their handling of the General Motors/Chrysler situation. Given the public’s feeling about throwing money at those companies, the Democrats’ counter-attacks would probably make the UAW happy, but hardly anyone else.

joey24007 on March 30, 2009 at 6:57 PM

The only people that lose from this strategy are the RINOs. (Liberals are going to lose power because of their own failure to lead, not from any political strategy.)

To whom it may concern (especially the trolls):

For those of you who do not see Sarah Palin as a major player or consider Sarah Palin somebody to be dismissed because of her incompetence or stupidity, I would like to point out at the press conferences of head football coaches you always hear questions asked about the opponent’s best players and how the head coach is planning to stop them for doing their job. Of course the head coach doesn’t reveal his actual game plan but does highlight or cite these individuals as key to the results of the game and that his team will devise specific game plans to thwart their abilities or talents from being pivotal to the results of the game.

Isn’t this what Obama and the Democrats are doing now, legitimizing Sarah Palin as a major player by making her a high priority and somebody that has to be dealt with at the highest levels of power?

Didn’t he say early on the best thing would be to let the Autos declare bankruptcy and the government should focus on helping the workers while the companies restructured through bankruptcy.

I would give a lot for Romney just to be President for just 1 year. He could do so much good. I wish Obama would ask him for help and he could work behind the scenes. Man I still support Romney!

I accept the reality that he will never be given that chance. But please you can’t think anyone else who ran last year would have been more prepared to handle this mess.

“Until this moment, Mr. President, I think I never gauged your cruelty or recklessness….It is time to put an end to this character assassination, Mr. President….You’ve done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?”

I had my reservations about McCain but he might have been the best person to be president now. He is fiscally conservative and would not likely go on the spending frenzy we see here. I really believe the best thing to do is let it all collapse which would require enormous political courage. McCain was unlikely to have run for a 2nd term and just might have had the courage to apply the harsh medicine.

And then, they talk.

These beautiful athletes are incoherent.

Maybe Sarah is just this…..absolutely a star at campaigning, and beautifully incoherent.

Boy, we dodged a bullet in Nov. when we elected an inexperienced novice to the Presidency. We could have had Palin, the only one of the 4 folks running that had actually had executive experience. Imagine how lucky we are to not elect a person who could have gone after all the criminals in Congress and handed their sorry asses to them on a platter with a nice smile. She could have tutored McCain in basic economics away from the public eye and we would not be in the biggest spending spree ever seen in the history of man. Yeah, she certainly is inexperienced. We are so screwed and the job of getting this country back on it’s financial feet is going to be really difficult now that we had the “experienced Obama” pound us into submission.

I could see this coming with the way they were whipping up a non-story about her looking for someone to pray with, then Politico (or maybe The Hill) had a story about Palin’s staff “not being ready for prime time” because of “all their gaffes.” No actual gaffes were mentioned, of course. You could have changed the entire article to “Obama’s staff is not ready for prime time” and it would have been far more to the point.

Well, two words: Bring it. Palin is not going under any bus on the say-so of these junkyard dogs.

The argument against a female president (not my argument, but *the* argument) is that they will somehow be weaker than a male president – so let’s see how she does.

Proud Rino on March 30, 2009 at 7:25 PM

She already proved that by coming out of an unprecedentedly vicious slime job with her head held high.

Well, this should push SarahPAC’s fund raising numbers over $100.

SnarkVader on March 30, 2009 at 7:31 PM

Here is the deal.

Attack and be prepared to get counter attacked.

Don’t whine and play the victim like rush.

Man up.

getalife on March 30, 2009 at 6:50 PM

If you are attacked….by that definition you are a victim. However, I don’t recall Rush playing a victim. He fought back intellectually. His ratings soared, and the left backed off. Who manned up, and who ran to the corner?

As for Palin, once again, these attacks are proof, the left needs to demonize someone. They’re scared right now. They know their actions are unpopular, and they’re losing power. The republicans aren’t gaining much, but it’s dangerous for them to lose support. Especially so early in the game. So now they need yet another distraction. If that means attacking the Governor of Alaska..so be it. It just shows their weakness, not Sarah Palins.

And of course, Sarah was put thru the ringer during the campaign. I’m sure she’ll man up nicely.

capejasmine on March 30, 2009 at 7:31 PM

sorry for the double post

Clyde5445 on March 30, 2009 at 7:31 PM

If she’s all that you dudes seem to think she is, then I’m sure she’ll knock this one out of the park. If she falters or disappears, then she wasn’t what you thought she was anyway, and better to find out in 2009 instead of 2012, right?

There are 68 million voters out there that have no idea what Obama is all about the just hate the other side and attack anything that is not dem/libs. They are not going to get any smarter or change their minds critical mass has been reached and there is no going back.

Is anyone getting that we are less than 100 days into this assw*pe’s presidency, and his minions are SO freaked out by how BAD he is, that they have to huddle together like a bunch of rats, first to PLOT to trash Rush- HUGE backfire, and they’re SO incredibly lame that they try to employ the same tactics against Sarah Palin??!! This is insane! We have a bunch of idiots running our Gov’t! They aren’t even smart enough to be good thugs!

capejasmine on March 30, 2009 at 7:31 PM

My guess is when Palin makes her come back she’ll be kicking a$$es and taking names. Her handlers in McMav’s camp were brain dead, and she wasn’t quite ready for prime time. Now she knows how the game is played and she’ll have a strategy and a real team. If nothing else the entertainment value will be outstanding.

She can handle anything the Bambi and his children can throw at her and do it with style and aplomb. We on the right side just need to make sure that we all have her back rather than stabbing her in the back as some of us have been wont to do.

Democrats’ desperation delivers sickly sweat stains spreading swiftly.

Sweet.

hillbillyjim on March 30, 2009 at 7:37 PM

Do the democrats plan on actually governing over the next four years?

joey24007 on March 30, 2009 at 6:57 PM

If by “governing” you mean “continuously campaigning for the Presidency”, yes.

If you mean actually operating the government in an effective manner, then no, not even close.

If, and this is a big if, there is economic recovery by 2012 barring some other unforseen disaster Obama is going to be reelected. Otherwise we are going to want to run a very strong candidate. If Palin handles this well it will only help her. If she doesn’t we are way better off knowing that. All in all, though, this ia a big fail for Obama, there is real pain out there and he promised a post partisan presidency. Sooner or later people will have to wonder why he is concerned with Palin when people are out of work.

ddrintn on March 30, 2009 at 7:44 PM

Are Republicans mad about this? This is a good thing. The argument with Palin was that she wasn’t tested, so test her.

Proud Rino on March 30, 2009 at 7:25 PM

Two things:

she was tested, Obama was less “tested” and the argument was sexist, at BEST.

Ok, that’s three.

She went through the freaking WRINGER because she was a powerhouse from day one and took the wind out of Obama’s sails. The attacks against her were unprecedented. Well, unless you don’t count the 8 years of character assassination of GWB. This was fast and furious for Palin. The left “won” by slandering Palin, capitalizing on snobbery within our ranks, and hiding Obama’s record and/or lack thereof!
Obama was UTTERLY inexperienced. He still IS…and refuses to govern like a statesman. He is a complete buffoon who is endangering our nation moment by moment. PALIN WASN’T EVEN GOING FOR THAT JOB…She might have been as forgotten as Biden these days, even.

No, the argument was/is sexist at it’s core. Blatantly disregarding this woman’s record and ongoing achievement while glossing over or padding Obama’s shaky, short, yet, radical record is nothing but sexism and outright bias.

Mommypundit on March 30, 2009 at 7:45 PM

Smells like a cover-up to me.

How is Palin at all relevant to anything the liberals, or any conservatives are doing today? Don’t you just love it when the democrats run scared!

msmveritas on March 30, 2009 at 7:44 PM

Not really a given. Lots of folks already have buyers remorse, and inflation has not hit the fan yet. There is no possible way borrowing massive debt and printing boatloads of currency during a recession will not drive up inflation.

Hee hee. A liberal saying ‘Man up’ that always makes me laugh. Yeah, don’t attack poor wet eared rookie; give him a chance. All you stupid libs can do is make excuses for Obama; the sad thing is most of you know how much he sucks, you just won’t admit it. And when was Rush whining? Last I listened to him, he was crowing about it because his ratings are up. He’s laughing at you people, getadouche. Weren’t you warned about huffing paint thinner before posting?

swede7 on March 30, 2009 at 7:49 PM

I highly doubt anyone would be able to say they were better off at the end of the Obama administration but if some miracle happens and things are generally ok he will get reelected. I think it would take a miracle for Obama to have general peace and prosperity. Well a miracle or a Republican Congress with a lot of discipline.
