Oh my: Dem strategists set to give Palin the Limbaugh treatment

posted at 5:55 pm on March 30, 2009 by Allahpundit

Like the man said, they’ve exhausted the use of Rush as an attention-getter. So they’re off to hunt bigger moose.

Slublog snarks that the over/under on references to Alinksy’s “pick the target and personalize it” rule in the comments to this post is four. I would have said 40. Don’t let me down.

“Her name conjures up all kinds of reactions in people’s minds,” Carville told me, adding that her association with the campaign will be used to portray the GOP as hidebound and to alienate moderates. “She’s an uncomfortable figure for a lot of Republicans,” Carville says. “They want to move beyond her. We like her.”

“Luckily, she seems to present us with an opportunity every few days,” added a senior Dem strategist. “You could say it’s a turkey shoot.”

Such efforts are aimed at the Dem base. But House Dem strategists hope she can be used to damage the GOP’s image with swing constituencies in the 2010 elections. “When she was campaigning, she rubbed suburban and independent women the wrong way,” one House Dem strategist says. “They are generally very moderate, and she’s a reminder of the extremism of the party and other aspects of it they dislike.”

Think they’re kidding? Have a look at the flier Democrat Scott Murphy just sent out in upstate New York. The obvious response here is “Great! It’s worked wonders for Rush.” And indeed, at least one progressive’s prepared to concede defeat in the Great Limbaugh War of ’09. But: (a) Rush has the time, platform, and incentive to fight daily skirmishes with Democrats while Palin doesn’t and (b) don’t forget that boosting Rush’s profile was the point of the White House’s strategy, on the theory that the public’s antipathy to him would bleed over to the GOP. Surely Emanuel et al. knew that a media war would increase Limbaugh’s ratings; they simply calculated that the political benefit of rebranding Republicans as Team Rush outweighed the cost of making his megaphone bigger. Maybe they’re wrong about that, maybe they’re not, but evidently they’re willing to double down and try the same strategy out on Palin. Exit question: Do gender politics make it more likely that they’ll overplay their hand with her than with Limbaugh? If they’re putting out one ad after another beating up on her while she’s lying low and taking care of business in Alaska, it’ll quickly seem gratuitous.

Blowback

Hey, this will only raise Palin’s popularity with the base and make her the inevitable 2012 nominee.

And anyone who think the Democrats are “smart” strategists; take a look at at Rush’s increase listener ratings (UP 50% since the Democrats attacked him); and the subsequent drop in Obama’s approval ratings (DOWN 25% in the Approval Index since the Rush strategy was implemented).

Norwegian on March 30, 2009 at 6:03 PM

Carville needs some new ideas. I just think this has gotten to the point that it’s really lame.

I looked at that flier and it has a picture of Rush, Bush and Sarah at the bottom. The Politico has this Update:

UPDATE: A very smart reader points out something I hope I would have thought of had this item not been posted in the middle of the night: “Special elections are about base turnout. I’m sure that was only sent to Democrats to fire them up. No lessons from that mailer about swing voters.”

benny shakar on March 30, 2009 at 6:06 PM

What a jerk.

Palin should ignore this obviously. Unlike Rush, she doesnt get 3 hours a day to rip the libs a new ahole. Thats why picking a fight with Rush is a bad idea because he is articulate and has the megaphone to kick some ass.

Palin has a full time job as a governor so she cant do that. Also, she isnt as articulate and if she had 3 hours a day like Rush, it would take about one day for everybody to find out that she doesnt know Africa is a continent, etc, etc, etc ad infinitum.

The Wall on March 30, 2009 at 6:06 PM

Its really the “Defend Obama” strategy masked by picking another target and putting the focus on them.

Sarah wear this as a badge of honor because it shows they are afraid of you.

William Amos on March 30, 2009 at 6:06 PM

Well..

If Palin gets some staff around her that can coordinate her Alaska level work and her national level work properly, and she has surrogates who can go out and saturate the airwaves defending her, and then she gives several well-placed speeches… Lots of ifs… BUT, I think the liberals will find her a harder target to destroy than they think.

What liberals always fail to learn is the middle and center-right of the spectrum, where most Americans live are apathetic and slumbering. Start pissing them off, and they awaken. Once that happens, you’re not putting the genie in the bottle.

I don’t think they know where to stop in attacking Palin. It will backfire on them.

Now, whether she’s electable to national office, I dunno. Personally, if she serves another term in Alaska, and then serves in a Cabinet post for the next Republican President, I think she can run nationally. There’s too much for liberals to hit her with right now.

But, she won’t go quietly. She’s also not given to lay low and just take abuse. I have a feeling this lady will give just as good as she gets.

Remember, hotstuff is still ratings gold. Win-win situation for hockey-mom.

RepubChica on March 30, 2009 at 6:08 PM

The shtick is already getting old. Even Obama’s cheering section in the media will see through it and start reporting it as “the Democrats are trying to paint” rather than exploring the merits of the question like they did with Limbaugh. This will de-fang the argument.

I look at this as good news for that reason and because the Dems are almost certainly blowing their wad long before the election. By the time the midterm rolls around, everyone will be tired of hearing this crap, and they might have to actually engage on substance.

She will have to respond if they beat up on her, but ehr response should be simple. Ask the question, why is barak Obama trying to beat up on me, all these months after the election? I’m just trying to raise my new baby and run my state during the recession.

She is responding to the recession the exact opposite of how Obama is. Where as Obama is throwing money at every problem he sees, Palin is taking a page from Reagans book and cutting taxes and rolling back government interference, a stark difference which she should highlight. we’ll see who’s strategy works out better.

And Rush Limbaugh needs to give Palin air time to defend herself and get her message out as well.

If Fox News continues to keep getting viewers while MSNBC and CNN fall further and further behind, then we watch newspapers go out of business. Y’know… Sometime these idiots have to get a clue. People aren’t buying what they’re selling.

The majority of the country who voted for Obama did so because he was NOT Bush. Not because they liked him or his policies. When you have a mobilization of people purely on a protest vote, you CANNOT read that as a mandate.

Watch what happens if his approval ratings start to hover around 50% and the numbers for generic congressional ballot (R vs D) start to trend in Republican’s favor. Combine that with more eyeballs going to Fox… I think they will realize their game is up.

BUT…

That’s not enough. Republicans have to come up with another Contract with America. If the voters in 2010 or 2012 are not COMPELLED to vote and ACT, they won’t. That’s our challenge as republicans and conservatives. Don’t let up. Speak out, get others engaged. Only then will we beat this scourge back, once and for all.

Like most here, I’m confident Governor Palin is politically savvy enough to play these attacks to at least a draw and possibly to her advantage, but I’m worried about the scurrilous lawsuits. The audacity of hope was for his campaign
Fear and demonetization will be for his reign
His candidacy was rather like that of a Henry Houdini
His presidency is shaping up to be far more like that of a Benito Mussolini

So Rush Limbaugh and now Sarah Palin are to Obama what the Jews were to Hitler? Yes, I guess pretty much so.

If Barack Obama and his brown shirts keeps this up much longer I will have to change Mussolini to Hitler and change Houdini to something that rhymes with it.

MB4 on March 30, 2009 at 6:17 PM

This is a great thing for Sarah Palin, if the Dems. actually go through with it, which I am not convinced they will.

It makes Obama look juvenile and erratic. People will question why they are spending time on political strategy when the country is on fire. They are clearly worried about Obama’s popularity.

This also gives Palin a national voice again, she will have the opportunity to question the President’s actions more directly and in front of a larger audience.

Huge mistake by the Obama team if they go through with it.

And most Americans don’t find her extreme, they are smarter than that. Any problems they had with her were based on the fact that they felt she was not ready for primetime. That argument will be moot by 2012.

If your question is what disasters the One has to respond to and we know he’ll do a crap-A$$ job of it… Well there are two. I hope and pray there is not another 9/11. If there is, all elected officials will have some very difficult explaining to do to the American people.

If you ask me, should that happen, people will realize why Americans rallied to Bush’s side after 9/11. I’m just not sure Obama can inspire that same unity, because his cold and detached demeanor will be all wrong then. There are some things Americans need sometimes, which you just cannot script on a teleprompter.

Sarah walked into the valley
With the truth clutched in her hand
She was only a girl
But she knew someone must take a stand

There will always be a valley
Always mountains one must scale
There will always be perilous waters
Which someone must sail

Into darkness, into danger
Into storms that rip the night
Never give in, never give up
But give thanks for the golden chance to the vile demons fight

This will blow up in their faces. The good governor has already proven she’s not going to run and hide because of their lies and smears.

I suppose their tactics make sense in the short term: try to distract voters from the daily blunders Team Obama is making, although, that will get harder and harder to do.

What will the Dems do once Al Franken is seated and he starts running his mouth on a national stage? Talk about a fundraising opportunity for the GOP . . .

NebCon on March 30, 2009 at 6:26 PM

“When she was campaigning, she rubbed suburban and independent women the wrong way,” one House Dem strategist says. “They are generally very moderate, and she’s a reminder of the extremism of the party and other aspects of it they dislike.”

Yet suburban women also admire a woman who was successful on her own, not on her husband’s name, like Hillary. They may not like a bunch of men (unless the Dems use women to criticize Palin, in which case it could be reduced to “catfight!”).

Suburban women may also be evaluating their future taxes under Obama, and wondering if maybe fiscal conservatism has something to say for it.

Women who’ve had some tough decisions may privately respect Palin for not aborting a Down’s syndrome child, although they’d admit they might not have the courage themselves to raise such a child. Same thing with not aborting her first grandchild.

I wonder how many of these “moderate” suburban women also have this to say about Billary: “If he’d been my husband, I’d have divorced him years ago, after first neutering him.”

All I can say is that this is probably not a smart move to make because it would essentially make Palin the administrations de facto public enemy no.1 and by default hand her the leadership of the GOP as the party rallies around to defend her. It would also give her massive exposure to the general public and because she is not afraid to defend her self or say what she thinks it would have the effect of raising her profile amongst voters.

Its almost like the Democrats are going out of their way to create very thing they fear the most. A populist conservative candidate who is intelligent, charismatic, articulate and unafraid to take the fight to her enemies.

Anyone who thinks palin is, “lying low and taking care of business in Alaska” either isn’t paying attention, or gets their news from sarah’s fanboys.

benny shakar on March 30, 2009 at 6:06 PM

Palin is laying low and doing the business of the Alaskan People benny shakar. You’d know that if you didn’t wake up in the morning and put your Anti-Palin bathrobe on, pour coffee in your anti-Palin coffee mug, stare into your anti-Palin screensaver, roll your mouse on your anti-palin mouse-pad, and start trolling conservative blogs bashing Palin. She campaigns every day only in your zombie psychosis.

Yep. “The Wall” is supposedly a Romney supporter, whose only real effect on HotAir is to make every other potential Romney supporter write him off as a national GOP prospect.

Norwegian on March 30, 2009 at 6:20 PM

Its these romney backers that have me so turned off to Mitt. I dislike the huckers as well but there really is no difference between the two.

William Amos on March 30, 2009 at 6:28 PM

God the way you guys jump at every hint of a new Demo political strategy. Meanwhile the GOP hasn’t released a budget, has massive infighting over what their budget plan is and all of the facts of the supposed GOP budget indicate that it would increase the defecit. What the DNC is doing in terms of strategy is the least of your problems.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present the opening act and understudy to Poptech. He’s working on his cut and paste skills.

Wall needs to add more “ROFLROFLZOFLQWOFLROFLPIFFLEPOFFLE!” before I accept him as a serious stand-in for poopdeck.

Well, this worked so well it gave Rush so many more viewers. They do it to Palin and it will only make her more popular.

Yeah, she’ll be the symbol of the opposition, which is what she should be anyway. We certainly don’t have anyone in Congress to fill that role.

Bring it, bastards.

Meaning: what will the Dem’s pretext be for a pre-emptive attack on Sarah, which they will then claim was a defensive response? Mentioning the Gulf of Tonkin was just Dem-speak for a non-existent pretext for pre-emption. I was trying to make it extra sweet for Benny, on the give’em-enough- rope theory.

smellthecoffee on March 30, 2009 at 6:31 PM

What’s so extreme about her?

Ampersand on March 30, 2009 at 6:04 PM

She didn’t abort Trig. The GALL of that woman.

Mommypundit on March 30, 2009 at 6:31 PM

I have wondered how conservative women out here in the big world–and there are many of us–can show group support for Sarah(other than the obvious money to her PAC, which many already do)in such a way and in such large numbers that the media has to take notice..All one read or saw during the campaign were large blocks of so called soccer moms and lib professional women and feminists ranting about how unfit she supposedly was. Is there no practical way to show large groups of cons women supporting her? And do it in such a way that is is obvious that there are a great many of us and we mean what we say. Just wondering?
