Obama on troops in Pakistan: Never mind

posted at 12:00 pm on March 29, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Three days after his administration strongly hinted that President Obama would order American troops into Pakistan when targets became open, Obama himself reversed that position.  In an interview with the Associated Press, Obama said he respected Pakistani sovereignty and foresaw no reason to violate it — at least not with ground troops:

As he carries out a retooled strategy in Afghanistan, President Barack Obama says he will consult with Pakistan’s leaders before pursuing terrorist hideouts in that country.

Obama said U.S. ally Pakistan needs to be more accountable, but ruled out deploying U.S. troops there. “Our plan does not change the recognition of Pakistan as a sovereign government,” the president told CBS’ “Face the Nation” in an interview broadcast Sunday. …

Without directly referring to the strikes, Obama said: “If we have a high-value target within our sights, after consulting with Pakistan, we’re going after them. But our main thrust has to be to help Pakistan defeat these extremists.”

Asked if he meant he would put U.S. troops on the ground in Pakistan, Obama said: “No.” He noted that Pakistan is a sovereign nation and said: “We need to work with them and through them to deal with al-Qaida. But we have to hold them much more accountable.”

That’s different than what the administration said on Thursday.  As Wired reported, it sounded like Obama had decided just the opposite:

President Obama has just laid out his new war strategy. And he’s made it clear that the fight is both in Afghanistan and Pakistan. So I asked Dennis McDonough, with the National Security Council: Does that mean U.S. ground forces in Pakistan? Or more drone attacks? “I’m not going to comment on the notions you laid out there,” he answered, during a White House conference call with bloggers.

But during a separate press conference, Bruce Reidel, who recently completed a strategy review of the region for the White House, offered some hints. “Thus far, our policy sees Afghanistan and Pakistan as two countries, but one theater of operations for our diplomacy, and one challenge for our overall policy,” he said. “We have very concrete proposals for increasing economic assistance to Pakistan, proposals that have already been put forward by the Congress. We’re also looking at what we can do on the military side.”

Michele Flournoy, Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, added, “I certainly believe we are going to be increasing our intelligence focus in this [Afghan-Pakistan] theater, and as opportunities arise that may increase the pace of operations, as well.”

“One theater” suggests no boundaries for US troops, a perception that the administration did not reject when explicitly asked on Thursday.  Today, Obama has rejected it, although he threatened to invade Pakistan with American ground troops as a candidate.  So is this “smart power”, or simply chaotic and fumbling messaging from the White House?

More selective patriotism coming from liberals that called Iraq “Bush’s war” since 2003.

We learned to defend ourselves against the unpatriotic bastards and whores from the left for the last eight years. We really don’t need your help from the unpatriotic Hot Air regulars now.

Thanks anyway! No really, thanks all the same!

And to all the Hot Air folks who I really have read so many words of encouragement from over the years, THANK YOU from all of us in the military. You’re patriots one and all. Thank you for all of your support even when President Bush was in power. Thank you for all you did for the military. Thanks for standing up for us against trolls like GAL when their side was wishing we’d lose. Thanks for praying for our safety as they were praying for big casualty numbers in the evening news. Thanks for wishing ill against our enemies as the liberals prayed for more suicide bombers and IEDs.

The best way little miss liberal can prove she is really an independent is to reference her posts of condemnation against Obama for lying and breaking these promises:

No lobbyist in his administration.

No earmarks.

Campaign finance reform

Transparency of government.

JUST WORDS? CHANGE.GOV PROMISES:

(via Instapundit)

End the Practice of Writing Legislation Behind Closed Doors: As president, Barack Obama will restore the American people’s trust in their government by making government more open and transparent. Obama will work to reform congressional rules to require all legislative sessions, including committee mark-ups and conference committees, to be conducted in public. By making these practices public, the American people will be able to hold their leaders accountable for wasteful spending and lawmakers won’t be able to slip favors for lobbyists into bills at the last minute.
Instead we got a bill that the lobbyists got before the Congressmen, was decided on behind closed doors, which will pass without being read. Hope and change?

Reading each bill “line by line”.

pay-as-you-go. Every dollar that I’ve proposed, I’ve proposed an additional cut so that it matches.”

According to his comprehensive tax plan released during his campaign, Obama promised to “eliminate capital gains taxes for small businesses.”

“If your family earns less than $250,000 a year, you will not see your taxes increased a single dime. I repeat: not one single dime.” (February 24th, 2009, Address to a Joint Session of Congress)

What he did next:

Ignored the already-hiked cigarette tax at the time of the statement and then this restated promise was broken just two days later, when the Obama’s budget proposal was released. His new budget raises 45 percent of its revenue from energy taxes that will be paid by everyone who fills a gas tank, pays an electric bill, or buys anything that was grown, shipped, or manufactured.

On the campaign trail, candidate Barack Obama railed against the use of signing statements as an abuse of presidential authority.

What he did next

President Barack Obama, on the other hand, has no problem with such “power grabs”, adding a significant one to the omnibus bill:
At the same time, after Democrats criticized former President George W. Bush’s signing statements, Mr. Obama issued one of his own, declaring five provisions in the spending bill to be unconstitutional and nonbinding, including one aimed at preventing punishment of whistleblowers.

Please little miss independent.
Where are your criticisms and condemnations for your liberal hero and the mounting lies and broken promises he has on his record just a few months into his Presidency.

Obama is just so confusing or confused. One day he is invading Pakistan, then he is not, then he is..is not..is..is not.

Whatever.

So, I take this means that if he has Osama in his sites and can not use a drone, he will call the Pakistani leadership and ask them if it is okay for him to go get Osama? It seems to me that he was pretty hard on McCain and Bush for letting a little thing like a border and a nation’s sovereignty get in the way of going after the bad guys. The real bad guys, not the fake bad guys like AlQaida in Iraq and Zarqawi.

Yeah, sure getalife supports the troops. smirk. snort. eye roll. sigh.

BTW, I saw a headline at CNN about some Spanish judge wanting to try Alberto Gonzales and several other Bush administration officials for Gitmo etc.

Just imagine the reaction if the United States decided to start dragging Arab and European and Chinese officials off to jail for much worse.

Who even asks what goes in a French prison? How many people get locked up and lost in China? How many Arab countries routinely torture and kill without any semblance of due process. The hypocricy of these people is just stunning.

There are about 700 people at Gitmo and they have been getting all sorts of press for years. I bet there are people languishing in Turkish prisons for a lot less and a lot longer and the Spaniards could give a rat’s behind.

this is likely less of a policy change than it is face saving for the Pakistani government. I doubt America’s military stance has changed all that much over the last 12 months. We’ll be conducting our own war and denying that we are doing anything wrong. Pakistan looks the other way and crows about their ’sovereignty’ (which they don’t recognize over the Taliban).

ThackerAgency on March 29, 2009 at 3:31 PM

So is this “smart power”, or simply chaotic and fumbling messaging from the White House?

Neither. It’s simply the standard mentality of a Progressive. Whatever he says is true, for the instant he says it. Then, when he says another thing – even if it contradicts the first in reality – that second assertion is also ‘true’. The paradox is resolved by recognizing that, to a Progressive, there is no such thing as an objective fact, true independent of what anyone thinks. There is only perception and belief.

They are beyond lying because that would entail at least an implicit recognition that reality is real, no matter what anyone says or believes.

Obama is stupid enough to trust the Pakistani government and call them first before making a strike.
Just like the super smart liberals in the Clinton administration called Afghanistan first before sending over millions of dollars of Tomahawks to blow up a camel and a couple of tents because the Afgans warned Osama of the attack.

We are being blackmailed by the Pakistanis because of supply routes and need for our money that we have no idea where it is going. They will only give us a few hits at a time to keep us in the game:

WASHINGTON — The Taliban’s widening campaign in southern Afghanistan is made possible in part by direct support from operatives in Pakistan’s military intelligence agency, despite Pakistani government promises to sever ties to militant groups fighting in Afghanistan, according to American government officials.

A Pentagon review of conditions at the Guantanamo Bay military prison has concluded that the treatment of detainees meets the requirements of the Geneva Conventions but that prisoners in the highest-security camps should be allowed more religious and social interaction, according to a government official who has read the 85-page document.

But if This judge wants to go forward with this, maybe he could call these Obama administration officials to testify.

One of the things we clearly want to do with these prisoners is to have an ability to interrogate them and find out what their future plans might be, where other cells are located; under the Geneva Convention that you are really limited in the amount of information that you can elicit from people.

It seems to me that given the way in which they have conducted themselves, however, that they are not, in fact, people entitled to the protection of the Geneva Convention. They are not prisoners of war. If, for instance, Mohamed Atta had survived the attack on the World Trade Center, would we now be calling him

My husband retired from the Marine Corps in 1998; his Certificate of Retirement has Billy Bubba’s signature on it. My husband won’t display it, for that very reason. In fact, I’m not sure where it is, but I know it’ll never see the light of day.

Hawk,

Godspeed comrade…

Baxter,

Excellent posts here today…

I just got this from newsmax:

Hezbollah Smuggling Across U.S.-Mexican Border

America’s porous southern border is an entry point for more than Mexican cartels and their illegal drugs — the Iranian-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah has been smuggling drugs and people into the U.S. as well.

Hezbollah has long been involved in narcotics and human trafficking in South America, and is now using the same routes into the U.S. that the Mexican cartels use for smuggling, according to an exclusive report in The Washington Times.

The group relies on “the same criminal weapons smugglers, document traffickers, and transportation experts as the drug cartels,” said Michael Braun, who recently retired as assistant administrator and chief of operations at the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

“They work together. They rely on the same shadow facilitators. One way or another, they are all connected,” he said.

Hezbollah, which fought a 34-day war with Israel in 2006, funds its operations in part from a large Lebanese Muslim diaspora, and some of that funding comes from criminal enterprises.

Salim Boughader Mucharrafille, a Mexican of Lebanese descent, was arrested in 2002 for smuggling 200 people, including Hezbollah supporters, into the U.S. He was sentenced last year to 60 years in a Mexican prison.

But the cross-border flow of drugs and people has intensified since the U.S. reduced access to the country by air and water following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. And the drug wars between the cartels have claimed the lives of more than 8,000 people since January 2008, destabilizing Mexico along the border and prompting President Barack Obama to send additional agents there.

Adm. James Stavridis, commander of U.S. Southern Command, recently told a House committee that the connection between drug traffickers and “Islamic radical terrorism” is a growing threat to the U.S.

Braun said members of the Quds force of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have been operating in South America and “could be commanding and controlling Hezbollah’s criminal enterprises from there.”

And a senior U.S. defense official said that in addition to Hezbollah,
al-Qaida could also use the Mexican cartels’ trafficking routes to smuggle operatives into the U.S.

“The Mexican cartels have no loyalty to anyone,” another official told the Times. “They will willingly or unknowingly aid other nefarious groups’ [entry] into the U.S. through the routes they control. It has
already happened. That’s why the border is such a serious national security issue.”

Just think, we’ll be paying these terrorists our tax dollars soon enough, while putting their children through school. The Obama legacy!

Just like they created the Gorlic wall, said we would lose in Iraq, and fought against any regulation of Fannie Mae.

This is just scary stupid.

hepcat on March 29, 2009 at 5:49 PM

It’s important to remember all that is involved in “supporting the troops”.

To do so, one has to support all of the troops, not just certain groups of troops. If getaclue wants to support the troops in Afghanistan looking for al Qaeda that is fine, but getalife then also has to support the troops fighting Bush’s war in Iraq. The same war that O’bama is on record as having opposed from the very beginning.

Likewise, when one says they support the troops, they also have to fully support the troops’ mission, as the two cannot be separated. This is a mistake Leftists frequently make.

Third, one cannot support the troops unless one also supports the officers who command those troops. And it’s common knowledge that in the officer corps, Republican officers outnumber Democrat officers by a 7 to 1 ratio. People like Wesley Clark are the exception, not the rule. To support the troops one has to support all of those evil Republican command people.

And finally, one cannot support the troops without also supporting their Commander in Chief. Another reality that Leftists frequently ignore.

They can be excused, of course-after all, 90% of them have absoluterly no knowledge of the military or how it works.

Del Dolemonte on March 29, 2009 at 5:50 PM

If the troops are reading this thread:

Good luck and get obl and his thugs.

You have my support.

We are and we are not buying your crap.

We served proudly under President Bush and were aware all the while of the Left’s hatred towards us. We saw the anti-military rallies from your side. Now that Obama is President you think patriotism is somehow cool. In a flash you went from having us air raiding villages and killing innocents to professionals you can now suddenly be proud of. I think I can sum it up in just 2 words.

F**K You.

Guardian on March 29, 2009 at 5:51 PM

The more I read it, the more I’m convinced that getalife is an Eliza Doolittle program that gets fed a weekly script by its “progressive” programmers and is programmed to monitory HotAir and post talking points from its canned scripts:

Eliza Doolittle

Given the lack of intelligent debate from getalife, the pretty much 24/7 nature of getalife, and given that its postings are sort of on topic most of the time, one could reasonably conclude that a well-written program could respond in the manner that getalife responds to stimulus.

If this is not the case, then I would contend that getalife is the wetware equivalent to a canned script since it exhibits no originality from James Carville talking points and thus is providing no value-added to the “progressive” movement.

Tim Shipman, a British reporter, is already comparing Barry to Jimmy Carter.

It’s a little early to write off President Obama, and it’s hard to imagine him failing as dramatically as did Jimmy Carter. But the mere fact that commentators, British as well as American, are making the comparison is not good news for the president, and his plans to turn America into a slightly less collectivist version of Europe.

Del Dolemonte on March 29, 2009 at 5:54 PM

That should be ‘monitor’, not ‘monitory’

Del Dolemonte on March 29, 2009 at 6:16 PM

Del Dolemonte on March 29, 2009 at 6:16 PM

It depends upon the depth of the responses to those posters. For example, if you look at the link to Eliza Doolittle type programs I provided, the program does not just parrot the talking points, but will appear to be answering the responses to the program:

For example, the DOCTOR program can appear to be responding to questions in a context in which the question “Who is your favorite composer?” can be answered acceptably with responses such as “What about your own favorite composer?” or “Does that question interest you?” A reasonably respectable update to that program could produce an intelligent-seeming contextual conversation on things such as, for example, supporting the troops or not supporting the war in Iraq.

I’m not saying that getalife really is a program, just that its responses are pretty much indistinguishable from such a context-driven program. A program would certainly provide a good explanation for how its responses seem to be scattered throughout the day, every day and at all times of the day.

Guardian has a point. I wonder if getalife was with Murtha when he called our Marines cold blooded murderers. Betcha money he/she/it was. I wonder if the claims of wanton torture by our troops of all prisoners seemed plausible to getalife, or if it seemed like an anti war ploy to demonize the troops and undermine support for the war?

I think we all know the answer.

getalife is just partisan. If the president who took out Saddam Hussein had a D behind his name instead of an R, all that flag burning crap would never have happened.
