Obama on troops in Pakistan: Never mind

posted at 12:00 pm on March 29, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Three days after his administration strongly hinted that President Obama would order American troops into Pakistan when targets became open, Obama himself reversed that position.  In an interview with the Associated Press, Obama said he respected Pakistani sovereignty and foresaw no reason to violate it — at least not with ground troops:

As he carries out a retooled strategy in Afghanistan, President Barack Obama says he will consult with Pakistan’s leaders before pursuing terrorist hideouts in that country.

Obama said U.S. ally Pakistan needs to be more accountable, but ruled out deploying U.S. troops there. “Our plan does not change the recognition of Pakistan as a sovereign government,” the president told CBS’ “Face the Nation” in an interview broadcast Sunday. …

Without directly referring to the strikes, Obama said: “If we have a high-value target within our sights, after consulting with Pakistan, we’re going after them. But our main thrust has to be to help Pakistan defeat these extremists.”

Asked if he meant he would put U.S. troops on the ground in Pakistan, Obama said: “No.” He noted that Pakistan is a sovereign nation and said: “We need to work with them and through them to deal with al-Qaida. But we have to hold them much more accountable.”

That’s different than what the administration said on Thursday.  As Wired reported, it sounded like Obama had decided just the opposite:

President Obama has just laid out his new war strategy. And he’s made it clear that the fight is both in Afghanistan and Pakistan. So I asked Dennis McDonough, with the National Security Council: Does that mean U.S. ground forces in Pakistan? Or more drone attacks? “I’m not going to comment on the notions you laid out there,” he answered, during a White House conference call with bloggers.

But during a separate press conference, Bruce Reidel, who recently completed a strategy review of the region for the White House, offered some hints. “Thus far, our policy sees Afghanistan and Pakistan as two countries, but one theater of operations for our diplomacy, and one challenge for our overall policy,” he said. “We have very concrete proposals for increasing economic assistance to Pakistan, proposals that have already been put forward by the Congress. We’re also looking at what we can do on the military side.”

Michele Flournoy, Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, added, “I certainly believe we are going to be increasing our intelligence focus in this [Afghan-Pakistan] theater, and as opportunities arise that may increase the pace of operations, as well.”

“One theater” suggests no boundaries for US troops, a perception that the administration did not reject when explicitly asked on Thursday.  Today, Obama has rejected it, although he threatened to invade Pakistan with American ground troops as a candidate.  So is this “smart power”, or simply chaotic and fumbling messaging from the White House?

strosfan on March 29, 2009 at 12:13 PM

It is one theater, at least the north-west areas of Pakistan and eastern Afghanistan. But you can’t chase militant in Pakistan with ground troops from Afghanistan which will only push them deeper into the mountains. The ground troops should be dropped in Pakistan and chasing them from there, in effect let the terrorists get caught in a pincer from both sides. I doubt anybody’d be willing to do that.

On the whole, Obama is hitting Pakistan because it was an ally, however insalubrious, of the US and to keep people from focusing on Iran.

Put me in the “another Black Hawk Down!” category. God save them!

On election night as the results were coming in, I was frightened for our nation, but I wept for our military and their families. They begged us not to elect this Marxist as their Commander in Chief. Many bloggers, and more public voices pleaded with Americans to stop and singularly think about our men and women in the military before pulling the lever for this Marxist. Or to stay at home and not vote because you were hacked off at the Republicans!

As everyone is constantly saying these days, “There are consequences to elections.” It is beyond heartbreaking to me that our bravest and brightest are the ones who are going to pay the highest price; along with their families for THIS election. “I am so sorry” just does not seem to adequately describe how bad I personally feel for placing these people in such a horrific situation.

I hope and pray as each one of us gets up each day to hear the new Marxist move of our overlords; I seriously pray that we take the time to be more determined than ever to become extremely active in doing something, ANYTHING to defeat these people on behalf of these men and women in the military, and on behalf of the family members here at home. The economy is impacting their families and they have one serious loon as a Commander in Chief. If you cannot get motivated because you are mad at the RNC, then get over that and think about these people. If you are not for war and are not a big military supporter; you had better come to love them because we are going back to a pre-9/11 mentality, and THEY are the only things between us and another attack. We cannot and must not allow our military to believe we have let them down and will not fight here at home. WE MUST NOT GIVE UP AND WE MUST FIGHT! Go to a tea party, send email to Congress, talk to your family members and neighbors and for the love of these who REALLY VOLUNTEERED to protect and defend YOU; fight like hell during these NY elections and for the 2010 elections. We are Americans by God, and WE THE PEOPLE must fight against tyranny that is now not just foreign, but very, very much domestic.

Now go out there Americans and kick some liberal butt! Fight for your Constitution! Fight for our military! Fight for your children’s futures! Fight for the love of this nation! WE ARE THE LAST MAN STANDING!

mossberg500 on March 29, 2009 at 1:08 PM

Obama rightly identified the main threat to us as al Qaeda, which he wants to “disrupt, dismantle and defeat.” Then why are his efforts overwhelmingly directed toward the Taliban?

I don’t like the Talibs, but they didn’t attack us on 9/11. Dirt poor, they just made the mistake of renting some fleabag motel rooms to al Qaeda. And they paid heavily for it.

The Taliban strategy is to make Afghanistan ungovernable for us. What if, instead of trying to claim worthless territory in the name of a corruption-poisoned Afghan government, we flipped the rules and just kept Afghanistan ungovernable for the Taliban?

We’d need far fewer troops. And the investment’s return would be higher.

Or how about Obama’s ringing claim that the Taliban have “nothing to offer the Afghan people but terror and oppression?” Many Afghans — at least among the Pashtun plurality — don’t agree.

The tribals deep in those valleys and the Pashtuns in Pakistan feel a lot closer to the Taliban’s values than to ours. They might not mind a new road, but they’ll skip the bikinis and Budweiser, thanks. The Talibs are home-boys. We’re the foreign element. Why is that so hard to grasp?

All of this circles back to the core of the problem — and it’s not Afghanistan. Afghanistan’s not worth a mullah’s hemorrhoid. Putting the bulk of our effort into Afghanistan amounts to attacking a crisis in California by rescuing Nevada. It’s Pakistan that lies (and lies and lies) at the heart of this problem.

To his credit, Obama noted Pakistan’s importance. Then he got all the solutions wrong.

Start with his inane — but touchingly American — statement that “the people of Pakistan want the same things we want.” Oh, really?

How many readers think Sharia law would be a good idea? How about beating the crap out of women just for yuks? Or stoning them to death because they smiled at the wrong time? And let’s ban alcohol, bare arms, dating and jobs for women. And grow those beards, fellas!

Yeah, we’re tight. We’re such good buds that, while the Pakistanis protect the worst elements within the Taliban, manipulate our key supply line and pander to terrorists, Obama wants to guarantee Pakistan’s stunningly corrupt politicians $1.5 billion in aid every year. Plus military aid.

Why on earth should the Pakistanis help us when we reward them lavishly for screwing us?

And since it’s still our policy to punish those who aid terrorists, we need to punish ourselves. We bear a portion of the responsibility for every Pakistan-backed terror attack on India. Why? Because the Pakistanis know that, no matter how brutal the deeds of their terrorist auxiliaries, we’ll step in to “mediate” and prevent the Indians from retaliating.

Want a truly fresh strategy that would work? End all support of any kind to Pakistan. Close our embassy. Do what makes military sense and reduce our forces in Afghanistan to a level that can be supplied by air. And concentrate on destroying al Qaeda, not on “owning” village X. (Obama’s approach just stinks of Vietnam.)

Imagine how different the situation would be if we weren’t Pakistan’s strategic prisoner and didn’t stand between Islamabad and Delhi. What if the Pakistanis had to behave responsibly and stop sponsoring terror attacks against India — or face India’s wrath? Nuclear war? Pakistan would vanish, India would lick its wounds. And the Pakistanis know it.

And how about asking ourselves the fundamental question: “Why is India a success story and Pakistan a complete failure?” Any chance that backward Islam might have something to do with it? We can’t bribe people to succeed.

Our president identified al Qaeda as Pakistan’s No. 1 enemy. That’s wishful thinking. Pakistan’s leading enemy has always been corruption. No. 2 is its home-grown Islamist insurgency. Al Qaeda’s way down the list.

Our pathetically naive president articulated one sound goal — defeating al Qaeda — then told us how he wasn’t going to do it. Like LBJ, all he can think of is more troops and more aid. Can’t we ask ourselves why the Taliban’s thriving? After the military beatings we’ve given them? How many of our troops must die for an empty policy?

Ho . . . ho . . . BHO. . . Why don’t your supporters go?

Heck, flying airplanes with human pilots in those valleys is hard enough-witness the numerous crashes of planes carrying Himalayan mountain climbers.

Paraphrasing Gen Petraeus (see headlines): I wouldn’t necessarily conclude that Obama is in totally over his head, that he’s virtually begging Russia and Iran to push us out of Central Asia, Israel to act on its own, India to seek accomodations elsewhere… I wouldn’t necessarily conclude that it’s getting time for conservatives to re-assess their assumptions about the uses of American power under this new economic and political context.

He just pronounces things the way he wants to, on the theory that if he says it that way, it must be the right way.

Actually the only thing that Obama has got right about Pakistan is learning how to pronounce them like a Pakistani or an Indian does. As an Indian i can attest that he pronounces it the right way.

He visited Pakistan in the 80’s as a young man – http://exposingliberallies.blogspot.com/2008/08/obamas-1981-visit-to-pakistan.html – most readers of HotAir probably know this by now.

He does not pronounce Pakistan the way a typical Caucasian or a black American would – because..umm.. he is not a typical black or white American. It is this “exotic” quality of Obama that endears/endeared him to the liberal elites. Of course, exotic is a word you use with islands, animals etc but for liberals it is a compliment when you use it to describe a person’s background !

And by the way should’nt this latest joke by Obama be filed under “Obamateurism of the Day” or something? He has been the Obamateur for the longest time – right since he announced his candidacy. His amateur views on Iraq, Afghanistan, economic policy, Social Security was on full
display.

Thank you liberals and “independents” and “moderates” for successfully foobaring America for the next several decades. You should all be mighty pleased with your President.

Wit the cooperation of the Iraqi people. A surge strategy is possible in Afghanistan, but a ground force invasion of Pakistan is suicide.

It doesn’t really. If he gets Bin Laden in the crosshairs, he’ll shoot to kill — as will Bush, a point Obama concedes.

Obama: Afghanistan Is “America’s War”
In his interview on CBS’ Face The Nation, President Obama was asked whether the Afghanistan War was now his war. “I think it’s America’s war,” said Obama. “What we want to do is to refocus attention on al Qaeda. We are going to root out their networks, their bases. We are gonna make sure that they cannot attack U.S. citizens, U.S. soil, U.S. interests, and our allies’ interests around the world.”

Petraeus: “I Wouldn’t Necessarily” Agree With Cheney That Obama Is Making Us Less Safe
Appearing on CNN’s State of the Union with John King, Gen. David Petraeus was asked his opinion of Dick Cheney’s comments that President Obama’s decisions were increasing the risk of a terrorist attack. “Well, I wouldn’t necessarily agree with that, John. I think that, in fact, there is a good debate going on about the importance of values in all that we do,” said Petraeus, outlining his own opposition to torture.

Nuff said.

Hearing this from a liberal literally makes me clench my fist. You are an abhorrent lot. How in Gods name can you come here after the last eight years of liberal attacks on President Bush and the military and profess your freaking holier than thou attitude.

Damn you! I wish you were banned.

I am honestly starting to feel hate for you all. This is and has always been a game to liberals. A game of words and a game of timing. You hate the military when a Conservative is in power and yet you demand support for the liberals you put in power.

The Soldiers Creed does not apply to you. I do not support you. I do not deploy for you. I will not die for you. As an American who wouldn’t lift a finger to try to get people of your own political persuasion to support George Bush, you come here now and try to act as though the Conservatives here are something less than Patriots? Damn your very soul. I have read during my deployments these people on Hot Air and their comments were always in support of the servicemen and women who were overseas.

While you called the Marines in Haditha murderers, while you donated money to the insurgents in Fallujah, while you said the war couldn’t be won, while you told young people if you didn’t get good grades your only future was the Army and Iraq and when you were protesting the war, these Hot Air people did things like protect the families of our fallen from “Democrat” Pastor Phelps and his vile followers, put together care packages, donated money to military causes and came here and supported us with words and encouragement. I know because I read it.

You should be ashamed. I honestly feel more and more like you must have to be paid for what you do here on Hot Air. Only a paid mercenary could be as cold and as calculating in their words.

The advanced party for my unit is pulling pitch in mere days for OEF for the second time in three years. If God forbid some harm falls on any of us, just understand none of it is for you. A paper cut in the office would be too big of a price to pay for dedicated support the likes of which you liberals have given. Any sacrifice my unit might have to make would be in spite of you.

Patriotism Alert: Airman Shot In Heart By Anti-War Protestor; MSM Covers Up Anti-War Motive
—Ace

Attempted murder is the highest form of patriotism.
Want to know the kicker? The MSM is covering up the anti-war lunatic’s motive, refusing to inform the public why he shot the airman.

this 22 year old guy walked up to him and asked him if he lived in the house. When Jon said yes, the guy said “not any more” and shot him point blank in the chest. He tried to shoot him again, but his gun jammed. Jonathan made it into the house. The guy then shot himself. Turns out the guy left a couple of suicide notes stating how much he hated the military and he wanted to go out making a statement, so he chose to make his statement on Independence Day trying to kill a soldier.

Another outbreak of Democrat anti-troop hatred

By Michelle Malkin • November 6, 2006 07:27 PM

Police arrested 24-year old Michael Burkett of Boise early Sunday morning after officers with Capitol Mall Security reported spotting him vandalizing two flag polls on the grounds of the Idaho Statehouse.
The flags are memorials to soldiers who lost their lives in the war on terror.

Burkett was charged with resisting arrest and Malicious Injury to Property. He and his 22-year-old brother, Tom Burkett, also charged with the vandalism, are the sons of state Sen. Michael Burkett (D) of Idaho’s 19th district.

Hoosiers react to monument vandalism

Kris Kirschner/Eyewitness News

Indianapolis, March 30 – Wednesday seemed like a normal spring day at the Canal Walk. But for visitors to the Medal of Honor memorial, a dirty secret marred an otherwise beautiful place, where vandals did a lot of damage.

Glass panels on the monument were smashed early Tuesday morning. Obscene words about President Bush and Gov. Daniels, along with peace symbols were spray-painted on canal walls.

Vandals burned dozens of small American flags that decorated veterans’ graves for Memorial Day and replaced many of them with hand-drawn swastikas, authorities said Monday. Forty-six flag standards were found empty and another 33 flags were in charred tatters Sunday in the cemetery, authorities said. Swastikas drawn on paper appeared where 14 of the flags had been….

Special report: Tracing the Left’s escalating war on military recruiters

http://michellemalkin.com/2008/03/07/special-report-tracing-the-lefts-escalating-war-on-military-recruiters/

His words conveyed a clear message: Of all the recruitment centers under his command, the one in Lawrence was facing major trouble from protesters and dissidents. “Over the last four years,” he said, “it has been a living hell here… We’ve had to install bomb-proof glass, security alarms and panic buttons, internal security cameras… I’ve had my tires slashed and car painted on… People come inside our center and vandalize it in front of us… We’ve had to shut down on more than one occasion because of you people blocking our doors… Our offices get vandalized at least once a month… We’ve had to replace our locks more times than I can count… Nearly our entire recruitment budget for this year has gone to security.”
