Just leave it alone

posted at 10:30 am on March 29, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The New York Post has a story about a certain videotape that they haven’t fully seen, featuring a person whose identity they haven’t confirmed, allegedly using illegal drugs.  The purveyor of this tape wanted $2 million for it because it reportedly involves the daughter of a high-ranking American politician, but has cut the price to $400,000 instead.  The Post says they won’t pay for the tape, but they have run the allegation in its newspaper.

What should be done with this story?  It should be dropped.  I’m not linking it because I find it objectionable on two levels.  First, it shouldn’t have been reported at all until identities were confirmed.  It may be sad to say that a videotape of an ordinary woman snorting cocaine isn’t newsworthy, but it just isn’t, especially when the woman’s identity hasn’t been confirmed anyway.

If the woman’s identity was confirmed and she was a public official, then that would be news.  The person alleged to be in this tape is not a public official, but the adult daughter of a public official.  Does this inform us of public policy, competence or integrity in office, or corruption or abuse of power?  Not at all.  So what’s the point, except to take a cheap shot at a public official we may not like?

The Post should have left this alone, and so should the blogosphere.

My issue is really with what Hot Air often does. Bloggers here seem to feel that to be honest, they must be the first person to reprimand a Republican politician and elevate the story for recrimination.
At the same time, they seem to think there will be a gold star for leaving some Dem story alone.

Couldn’t agree more. While I admire the decency, it gains us NOTHING!

I’d suggest Ed read Breitbart’s Rules for Conservative Radicals. We are in a battle for our lives and the old rules of decency and fair play can’t apply because the enemy uses these techniques against us.

For those of you just tuning in: It’s Ashley Biden — Joe’s daughter — on tape snorting down some lines of blow.

Can the drugs be traced to Mexican drug cartels?

Just asking!

Interesting. By calling them “old”, I’m inferring from your statement that the “rules of decency and fair play” did not used to work in this country. Why? Well, because our culture prevented it. Few people put up with such garbage. Now, it’s commonplace. By using the weapons of the enemy, you are becoming more like him. You are accepting his ways as good and proper. Much of our country has been convinced that new rules for decency and common sense were needed and have now adopted them. Our culture has changed. How and why?
“To prepare society for psychological control, the very soul of the individual must be destroyed in its youth by disturbing it with evil via forced schooling and media.” ~ György Lukács
“A quiet revolution can be dispersed throughout a culture over a period of time to destroy it from within. Mass psychology and media can break the traditions, beliefs and morals and the will of a nation so there is no possibility of resistance.” ~ Antonio Gramsci
“Socialism is precisely the religion that must overwhelm Christianity. … In the new order, Socialism will triumph by first capturing the culture via infiltration of schools, universities, churches and the media by transforming the consciousness of society.” ~ Antonio Gramsci
“The civilized world has been thoroughly saturated with Christianity for 2,000 years and a culture based on this religion could only be captured from within. By winning cultural hegemony, men could be made to love their servitude.” ~Antonio Gramsci
If we adopt the culture of the enemy, then what have we gained? This is not to mean that we should not be shrewd, but it does mean we should not sacrifice our ethics and morals for the enemy.

The Post should have left this alone, and so should the blogosphere.

^^No one should be outright slandered – but it should be investigated and, if true … it should be PUBLISHED.

Ed … you KNOW what the liberal media would have done with this if it had been one of the Bush daughters. YOU KNOW.

Now I don’t like sinking into the mud to their level any more than you do – but we are on the verge of a Civil War in this country and the only thing might save us is if Constitutionalists (i.e. Conservatives) can get a grip on the public trust again.

THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN unless we get a bit dirty here. We are working against an Executive and Legislative Branch controlled by the Goons. So is most of the Judiciary and there is no doubt that the State Propaganda arm (i.e. MSM) is against us as well.

I for one would rather get a little dirty in the political tactics department – it may SAVE US FROM HAVING TO PICK UP A GUN LATER.

No more fighting with one arm tied behind our backs. If it was Biden’s daughter snorting coke – let’s see the video. God knows we had to sit through the crap about Palin’s daughter. And letting this pass won’t cause the MSM to become civil toward us in the future.

THERES A WAR ON ED. Soldier up!

Interesting. I think I’ve bumped into some of these people, that identify as conservative but always seem to want to discourage conservative efforts, and make sure we are giving Obama a chance (and then another chance, and another, and another…), even on the very blogs where we learned what kind of man he was before the election.

Thanks for posting that. Good food for thought.

capitalist piglet on March 30, 2009 at 1:52 AM

Come on, Ed. If you wanted it left alone, you would have left it alone. You didn’t.

The allegation that Biden’s daughter snorted cocaine is no more protected than any of the allegations Sarah Palin’s family had to put up with.

Live by the sword, die by the sword. This is war.

Don’t go all Frum on us, Ed.

Kane Rogers on March 30, 2009 at 4:12 AM

I say she is fair game due to the tarring and feathering of Sarah Palins family.

Not to mention the hack jobs done to Bush’s daughters at every chance.

You set the rules dems, time to drop the hammer. This is indeed a war and these bastards need to be driven off a cliff.

gdonovan on March 30, 2009 at 6:03 AM

I didn’t even know Biden had a daughter and, for her sake, I hope the charge isn’t true. If it is, it displays a lack of character and intelligence. To see such a thing and not connect it to the rank stupidity of her father is, though unjustified, almost impossible. You’d have to think it’s a genetically inherited kind of stupid.
Yes, Ed, the Democrats opened this playbook on the Palins. You think we wouldn’t at least take notes?

Ed,

You need to study your Christian history more.

Christians are (or should be) Alpha Males. Here is the wiki link for the Seige of Malta.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Malta_(1565)

This is war. If you are not up to it, simply look the other way and us Catholic wardogs will quietly bite and make off with the red meat and fight the ‘statists’.

(I don’t use liberals anymore. I use the proper term ‘statists’ in respect and homage to ‘The Great One’.)

I think it’s time to put Joe on the spot. When Bristol Palin was discovered to be pregnant – the MSM gave Sarah Palin not a bit of rest from it. Even though getting pregnant is STILL a legal activity in this country – Gov Palin was still forced to explain it. Bristol was held up as a “bad example” for American youth – and Gov. Palin was forced to acknowledge it.

Joe Biden – a MAN WHO HAS FOUGHT FOR TOUGHER DRUG PENALTIES – now needs to explain why his daughter should be exempt from those penalties?

Joe Biden – needs to answer this question … “Is your daughters conduct an acceptable example for America’s youth?”

What is Joe’s plan to “clean up” his junkie daughter? This isn’t the first problem with drug use she’s had – this is a pattern. Sarah Palin had to offer up a “marriage” for her daughter’s sins – what’s you’re plan to rectify your daughter’s sins?

How did Joe’s daughter acquire Cocaine in the first place? Did she use one of Obama’s old drug dealers? Did she find her own?

This needs to be Anderew Sullivan’d!

Democrats started the gotcha game with family; remember the douche-nozzle restaurant owner in Austin calling 911 when they tried to buy alcohol? Underage wimmen drinking was all the rage in the papers. Now we have the VP’s daughter snorthing up blow like a dirt devil going through a paprika spill…sorry, this needs to be beaten into the ground. Maybe after they’ve been in the barrel a few times, they’ll knock it off. No, of course they won’t, but we seriously need to stand up and go on offense. This ‘grab the ankles and act superior’ bullsh*t needs to stop.

The fact that they did not pay or run the story, only proves that it is a liberal’s family member.
Of course I could be wrong…they never ran a story about Palin’s kids, or the Bush twins when they were caught doing something…did they?

Sorry, I cannot leave this story alone.

I am a gossip monger. I am not a journalist.

Plus, the liberal media used President Bush’s daughters to hold court against President Bush’s “crimes”, so now it is time for a little payback.

I guess I am just a mean person. Oh well.

I wonder if she’ll go on to document this in a biography, “Broken Dreams of my Father” or “The Audacity of Blow”. Who knows, maybe she can parlay this into a run for state office, then national and finally the Presidency. No experience necessary.

peacenprosperity on March 30, 2009 at 11:53 AM

I don’t understand why it should be left alone simply for the fact that if it’s true, it’s news. Look at the John Edwards scandal! No one in Lefty MSM wanted to investigate and report on it, but it finally came out and look at the effect it had on his candidacy. Yes I know Biden’s daughter isn’t running for anything, but she is an adult, and she ought to be setting an example (which she is actually doing quite nicely). The irony is that the example she’s setting is that dems and their relatives and friends can talk all day long about being for this or that, but at the end of the day they don’t really believe it or live their lives by it, and they get a pass from everyone.

4shoes on March 30, 2009 at 12:59 PM

I don’t really care about Biden’s daughter. I have 4 kids in their 20′s and they sometimes do things they shouldn’t. It’s not necessarily a reflection on me or their mother. Our children are not us.

I think we should leave it alone. We are better than that.

FWIW Joe Biden is a worthless piece of crap.

I don’t want to read 5 pages of comments so could someone give me a recap? How many of the 400+ comments said We’re better than the Left, how many said Children of politicians should be off limits, how many said offspring of a Republicans are always attacked, how many said Hell no – after the trashing of the Palin kids?

My vote is for Republicans being a bunch of weenies who seem to like getting crapped on.
