Biden to Zapatero: Hey, thanks for all that help in Iraq

posted at 9:48 am on March 29, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Barcepundit catches Joe Biden in Spain doing … well, what Joe Biden does best.  Joe Biden remembered to thank Spanish Prime Minister Jose Zapatero for all the help he gave us in Iraq, except that the only thing Zapatero gave us in Iraq was the finger:

MAN, BIDEN IS A GAFFE WITH LEGS: during his meeting with Spain’s primer minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero in Chile yesterday, Biden thanked Zapatero for his effort… in Iraq (link in Spanish, haven’t found this detail in any English-language media).

As everybody knows, the first decision Zapatero made after his unexpected win in 2004, right after the Madrid train terrorist attacks, was to abruptly and unilaterally pull out from Iraq. So either Biden made a gaffe, or he was thanking Zapatero for angering Bush…

No, I think Biden would have been blunt enough to just say, “Thanks for ticking off George Bush.”  It should be noted that the Spanish Finger to the US didn’t just include pulling out of Iraq, but also refusing to train Iraqi security forces.

Originally, Zapatero explained his abrupt retreat by objecting to a lack of UN mandate for the mission.  When the UN finally did give the US a mandate for rebuilding Iraq, Zapatero refused to return to the coalition.  In doing so, he earned the (unfortunately) undying gratitude of … Moqtada al-Sadr.  So I guess Biden and Sadr share that feeling of gratitide.  In the end, of course, the fast retreat Zapatero conducted did nothing to remove the former al-Andalusia from al-Qaeda’s sights.  Just six months after announcing their withdrawal, AQ tried bombing their High Court.

Regarding Iraq, Biden should have said, “Thanks for nothing.”  But then again, no one but Barack Obama really thought Biden was a foreign-policy expert, anyway.

I have given up thinking poorly of Biden, Reid, Pelosi, Waters and too many others to name. Why, because their constituencies keep re-electing them so the idiocy, corruption, incompetence, stupidity, moron behavior, power driven egos and much more must somehow be values that their voters appreciate and want to see in their representatives. Why make fun of Joe, his home folks think he is the one they want and they reaffirm it every election year? If the folks electing the representatives change their minds about values then Joe will go but until then we are only criticizing the messengers of the people or shooting the messengers so to speak.

No, I think Biden would have been blunt enough to just say, “Thanks for ticking off George Bush.”

Biden’s not “blunt;” he’s just soft in the head.

If he had the balls to say “To Hell with America, I’m in favor of anything that screws Republicans” ONCE, he’d say it a hundred times a day.

What Joe Biden said was what he meant — but it was not what he meant to say. What’s really going on inside his warped head just sort of bleeds over into the stream of unconsciousness that constantly spills out of his mouth. There’s no rhyme or reason to it. It’s all unintentional, but that doesn’t make it better.

logis on March 29, 2009 at 12:07 PM

Is he just being facetious? I suppose the follow-up question is “What is the likelihood that he is being facetious?”

We need to give the Obama administration sincere thanks for its biggest accomplishment to date. Since the election, their stupidity has managed to knock the Brittney Spears’ trainwreck out of the national news. The poor girl just cannot compete.

Thanks, O!

Biden: It’s great to be here today in Hiroshima. Or is it Hiro-SHE-ma? I’ve heard it both ways in committee hearings. Anyway, some say the adminsitration is trying to get me as far away from Washington as possible. Haha God love ‘em! That month I spent in the DMZ in Korea is a month I’ll never forget. But listen folks, this is important. Really important. Let me tell you that August 6 marks a great for our alliance. When we joined together to defeat the scourge of Communism, there was nothing we couldn’t get accomplished together. You with your transistors and techno stuff, us with our prestige in the world. Not looked down upon by the Chinese. But let me conclude here. I’m getting a signal we have to wrap this up. Great folks here in Hiroshima. Love coming here and being with the people.

When will normal Americans stop underestimating the “base” of the Democrat Party and its mission to destroy its enemy…America?

When they start showing just a wee bit of energy at turning the dial from CNN/ABC/CBS/NBS/NPR/MSNBC and canceling/not renewing NYT/WAPOO/LAT/Newsweak/Time etal.

It’s SLooooooooooowLY happening now. CNN dying. NYT dying. Magazines dying.

As a recovering liberal, the leftists MUST shut down non-leftist information because Americans would never buy their cr@p socialism without propaganda.

Here’s what we all need to do. It’s simple but not easy.

Start speaking up with friends, families, acquaintances.

Let’s roll. Most libs are not stupid, just uninformed drones.

Good thing the press spent months looking through Palin’s trash, huh? Wouldn’t want a moron for a VP after all.

I’m not sure which is more risible, that the press turned Obama into some post-partisan secular messiah, or that they turned Biden into a foreign policy brainiac.

Is there anyone in Obama’s administration that isn’t a moron, a neophyte, or a crook?

18-1 on March 29, 2009 at 1:07 PM

I would much rather have Joe as President.
Sure, he’s liberal and a walking train-wreck, but I also think he means well (sadly) and probably loves the country , as it exists. I think he would also do the politically expedient thing often, which would be nice right about now.
The other guy- not so much.

jjshaka on March 29, 2009 at 1:16 PM

I think it is wonderful that in these dark and dangerous times, with social and economic upheaval, war and fall of western civilization, we at least have the hilarious antics of the most moronic vice president in U.S. history.

The left of course, would say that he is no Dick Cheney.

Exactly.

Actually, this is the one time that Biden did NOT make a gaffe. Spain did us a favor doing its about-face in Iraq because they labeled Spain as dhimmi-land. Consequently, they labeled America as not dhimmi-land which Gen. David Petraeus promptly set out to prove.

Now he’s in charge of Afghanistan and everybody knows that this is not good news for the enemies of America because Petraeus has battlefield cred.

President DonkeyEars is letting the CIA do what it does best – terrorize the enemies of America with 21st century weapons (Predators).

It’s called counter-terrorism, not anti-terrorism. There is a difference.

For what it’s worth…

I was in an on-base civilian pizza joint in Al Talil Air Base Iraq when the word came out that the Spaniards were pulling out. The Spanish Officers and NCOs were embarrassed and really quite devastated. They tried to apologize for their governments decision.

Zapatero is a humongous p*ssy and the saddest excuse for a Prime Minister Spain has had in years.

madne0 on March 29, 2009 at 3:11 PM

I think the best explanation here is that Biden and Co. simply don’t know what the hell they’re doing.

Yeah, getaclue is a laugh riot. You should witness its frantic spin cycle over on the Pakistan thread. It claims to support the troops, but when asked if it supported those same troops in 2004, it instantly turns itself off and refuses to answer.

Del Dolemonte on March 29, 2009 at 5:17 PM

During the Bush administration, I was convinced that the State Department was functioning as a shadow government with the intent to undermine Bush’s presidency. This was evidenced in how they supported various diplomatic missions and other activities.

Now, I’m not so sure that they were against Bush as much as initially thought. All of these gaffes: the embarrassing DVD gift to Brown, the mistaking of O’s counterpart in Italy, the Hillary gaffe in Mexico, and now this Biden gaffe should have never happened. State has protocol officers and briefers who are supposed to make sure that these kinds of things are handled appropriately. So, either someone in State hates The One even more than they hated Bush, or the Obama administration is ignoring their protocol officers. Something is wrong with this picture.

unclesmrgol on March 30, 2009 at 1:04 AM

Biden should thank the PREVIOUS President of Spain (Jose Aznar) for his TRUE help he offered us in Iraq.

He would be following in the footsteps of the Big O, who thanked FORMER French President Jacques Chirac and looked forward to “working with him the next four years”, rather than CURRENT French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who is more Pro-American than Chirac was.

By the way, Zapatero is Spanish for “shoe-maker”. I wonder if he made the shoes someone threw at George W. Bush?
