Video: Oakland salutes its four murdered police officers

posted at 1:15 pm on March 28, 2009 by Allahpundit

Clip via Noel Sheppard, who’s assembled an exhaustive video round-up on the murders at Newsbusters. He’s got footage of the infamous Marxist rally in support of the murderer over there too, but I couldn’t bear to watch it let alone post it. Content yourself with this, and with the LA Times’s evocative story on yesterday’s memorial service:

A large blue curtain parted and the coffins were rolled out, one by one. Each was escorted by officers as pallbearers and by immediate family. A bagpipe and drum corps, composed mainly of San Francisco police officers, played a medley of “Dawning of the Day” and “Going Home.”

The last coffin to emerge was that of Sakai who, among other duties, served as a K-9 officer.

When his casket had been placed in a row with the others, each before their respective family members, Sakai’s partner, a German shepherd named Doc, was brought in on a leash. The dog stood at the casket and barked several times before being led away.

Officers from all over North America — Canadian Mounties, too — showed up, a welcome gesture of solidarity in a city where respect for the force has suffered of late. This will change that, but what a price.

that guy who set up the march for that thug was on O’reilly last night. Even mayor Willie Brown was RIPPING him apart.

Got any video footage of the goons in Oakland who’ve been protesting against the Oakland police and belive that the shooter in the incident was a hero, Allah?

BOR has been all over the story, even had one of their rep’s one last night. It’s disgusting and disturbing to say the least.

DeathToMediaHacks on March 28, 2009 at 1:20 PM

the cop was a complete MORON in that incident with Moats. My goodness, Moats was in the hospital parking lot when this goon stopped him. Also he had his hazard lights on the whole way when he was driving to the hospital. Just listen to Moats talking to the cop. He didnt use any bad language or anything. He seems like a class act to me. The cop should be punished heavily.

Mayor Ron Dellums did not speak at the funeral for four Oakland police officers Friday at the request of at least two officers’ families.

Speakers at Friday’s funeral included acting police Chief Howard Jordan, former Oakland mayor and state Attorney General Jerry Brown, U.S. Sens. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. A Police Department chaplain also read a letter from President Barack Obama.

Dellums was on a stage with other dignitaries Friday but did not address those in attendance.

“There were a couple of families whose wishes were that the mayor not speak,” said Dellums spokesman Paul Rose. “And the mayor adhered to their wishes.”

No information was available about which families made the request or their reasoning for it. At a press briefing in advance of Friday’s funeral, police Capt. Paul Figueroa said the families were intricately involved in planning the service. He did not say how speakers were selected.

There are few things a moving as funerals for police officers shot in the line of duty. The young policeman shot in Manchester NH several years ago had a spectacular funeral. Uniformed officers from all over the country and Canada from local, state and Federal even the Forest Service simply stood there absolutely quiet–oceans of them as far as you could see. Long, long lines of motocycle officers standing quietly beside cycles at attention along all the routes to and from the arena where it was held. the sheer awesomeness is too much to describe. I did not know the young man and felt for his family but actually cried when I saw this enormous turn out for a fellow officer from other law enforcement entities. It gave me an appreciation for what they do and how needful they are that will always remain with me. I shall pray for these officers and their familes.

Allah,
To clarify, the cop that killed Oscar Grant was a BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) cop; an agency that patrols multiple counties. He was not affiliated with the Oakland Police Dept; please don’t confuse the two. The OPD has enough problems of its own.

I appreciate that the enemies of our country go out of their way to publicly identify themselves.

That said, the protesters are only the logical conclusion of years of ‘victimology’ preached and taught by people like our current president.

You see, because of something that happened almost 150 years ago to people who no longer live, THESE people are excused from any and all improper behavior and those that try to correct or stop them are the real bullies and criminals.

AnninCA on March 28, 2009 at 2:13 PM

I’m not trying to hijack the thread or take attention away from the Oakland heroes, but I need to give YYZ and myrenovations a well-deserved STFU.

If you had been paying attention you would know the first two victims in Oakland were the officers making the initial traffic stop, a stop that ended poorly. They stopped a driver, the driver somehow gained tactical advantage and the results were deadly.
In the Dallas situation the officer observed a legitimate moving violation. In most states the law justifies a detention and requires the driver to yield to the police officer’s direction. Moats chose not to comply, and took it upon himself to dictate the situation to the officer and refuse lawful commands.
I’m sure YYZ and like-minded fools are blessed with the gift of hindsight and can dictate the officer’s proper mindset with the benefit of the video. I’m curious how many enforcement stops YYZ has conducted upon which he bases his judgement of the, “idiot cop.”
Place the burden on the driver. How would this incident have played out differently if Moats had stopped immediately, complied with the law, STAYED IN HIS CAR, explained his mother-in-law’s situation and asked for assistance? Moats had the distinct advantage over the officer of knowing his own intentions. The officer couldn’t have known the intentions and as a matter of officer safety has to assume non-compliant behavior could be the pre-cursor for a more violent encounter. For Moats to infer — as he seemed to in the video — that he should be somehow exempt from the officer’s directions because he had his flashers on (!) is the essence of the problem…a problem he created by choosing not to stop immediately when required to.
YYZ, I don’t know you, but I think it is entirely inappropriate and disrespectful for you to pass such a foolhardy judgement at the same time you appear to be mourning the loss of other officers who had been killed in a situation so similar in appearance at the outset. Back away and let people do their jobs.

AnninCA on March 28, 2009 at 2:13 PM

Doing their job, clearing the area, room by room. As I understand it they didn’t know he was in that particular room. He was in a clost and fired through the door.

No one could ever understand that kind of job unless they have been there.

Yoop on March 28, 2009 at 2:18 PM

In a lot of ways I consider the job of police officers harder than ours. Where we consider almost everyone outside the wire an enemy, the police in this country have to assume otherwise. For the most part, they’re dealing with fellow Americans. People you would assume are basically on your side. How do they make that decision of when to completely change their mindset and consider them an enemy? Split second decisions that the bad guys always have first say in.

The ceremony was beautiful. Too bad Boxer had to speak.

For you officers out there on active police duty, my hats off to your daily bravery.

I think their point was not to let DTMHs hijack the thread with his racist bogeyman innuendo about the stop involving Moats. Regardless of what happened there, this thread was about the Oakland police officers and you busting on YYZ and myrenovations would only serve to open that discussion up and feed the troll.

My heart goes out to the families of the Police Officers. It will only get worse. That man that led the march to call that murderer a hero should have been arrested with all that was there. This is how sick Ca. has become. It will get sicker and sicker each day. Ca. needs a Revolt and I mean a big time Revolt. Get our Government out. This is a glimpse of the future. As the filthy liar continues to dismantle the rule of law, the first responders will be demonized instead of lauded. The troops who dare fire in combat will be sent to war criminal trials under the auspices of the UN. Private gun ownership will be criminalized.

The only way to get back at the third-world dictator in the White House will be violent conflict. I don’t advocate this but it is becoming increasingly clear that it is the only way to thwart the onslaught from the left that is BY THE MINUTE destroying America.

Frankly, I think the public is outraged enough over some of what has happened in the filthy liar’s first 60 days that we are close to a tinderbox situation where one seemingly minor event will be the spark to bring the bastard and all his co-conspirators down.

The police work at the behest of the mayor and the city council. Get a clue!!!!!

RealDemocrat on March 28, 2009 at 4:57 PM

No they don’t. The police work within the guidelines of the law. Clearly you are a real democrat to be so ignorant. The police may work for the city which is run by mayor and city council but that doesn’t make the OPD or any police force a private para-military force working at the “behest” of individuals. Oakland’s mayor can’t tell the OPD to take out his neighbor for letting the family pet poop on the mayoral lawn.

OK guys, it’s time to stop feeding the slime encrusted troll.

Cops don’t get to make policy for stupid politicians. They run the show. We get to clean up the aftermath. If you try and enforce laws that are not supported by the politicians, then your career will be cut short. Or you will be doing parking control duty while waiting out your retirement. Ten years of putting up with that crap was enough. Walk a mile in one of the beat cop’s shoes and you’ll know what the hell I’m talking about.

NO COP DESERVES TO GET MURDERED IN THE LINE OF DUTY ASSHOLE! Try again.

FlyoverJ-HawkFan on March 28, 2009 at 5:03 PM

Splitting hairs here but you really don’t mean to use the word “deserves” do you? It’s not a matter of being deserving or undeserving. Society should not tolerate the violent deaths of any civic public official in the performace of his/her duties. Period.

Unfortunately the police are not in a position where they are dealing with rational individuals who seek to contribute to the well-being of society. On Tuesday, I looked out to watch an angry woman jumping up and down on the roof of a car parked in front of my neighbor’s house. Turns out that this woman’s ex-boyfriend moved out and she totally freaked out. It didn’t escalate beyond a 911 call and a (worthless) PPO against the woman but the principle is the same. Police officers see people at their worst at the very worst times of these individual’s lives. It is one of those factors that our peace officers face every day. You never know where a traffic stop may end up. For these OPD officers, it went badly. They didn’t “deserve” to die but they knew the risks. They are heroes because of that. Where I would like to vent my rage is against those who would demonize peace officers or anybody else charged with the rule of law. They are essentially anarchists.

We’re sick and tired of this crap!!! If you won’t support the taxpaying citizens, we won’t be supporting YOU!!!!!

Highhopes:
I am responding to RealDemocrat, not trying to split hairs here. I could write a book detailing my exploits in just ten years of service. I knew the risks, and all the rest know the risks. He/she is angry about the politics and policies of Oakland. I’m not from California and can tell you what a shithole Oakland is. I just get offended when I hear that “they deserved it”.
