Obama’s not the only amateur, apparently

posted at 12:45 pm on March 28, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

When I started the Obamateurism of the Day, I didn’t expect it to turn into a franchise.  Demonstrating that Amateur Hour continues at the State Department, Hillary Clinton managed to display an amazing degree of ignorance while making a pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico yesterday afternoon.  While viewing the famous image of Mary as a native peasant that Mexicans believe was divinely created, Hillary asked — well, you have to read the story:

During her recent visit to Mexico, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made an unexpected stop at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and left a bouquet of white flowers “on behalf of the American people,” after asking who painted the famous image.

The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was miraculously imprinted by Mary on the tilma, or cloak, of St. Juan Diego in 1531. The image has numerous unexplainable phenomena, such as the appearance on Mary’s eyes of those present in the room when the tilma was opened and the image’s lack of decay.

Mrs. Clinton was received on Thursday at 8:15 a.m. by the rector of the Basilica, Msgr. Diego Monroy.

Msgr. Monroy took Mrs. Clinton to the famous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which had been previously lowered from its usual altar for the occasion.

After observing it for a while, Mrs. Clinton asked “who painted it?” to which Msgr. Monroy responded “God!”

Who painted it? Didn’t anyone brief Hillary on the history of the Guadalupe apparition?  As it turns out, no one should have had to brief the Secretary of State.  She told the Monsignor that she had visited once before, thirty years ago. She must have thought it was just a good place to take tourist pictures.

The Anchoress notes:

Doh! Another State Department error! It’s a good thing we have a “smart” State Department, now, instead of the “dumb” one we had for the last 8 years!

Some “smart diplomacy,” huh?  First Hillary doesn’t understand multiparty democracy, then she fumbles a snarky “reset button” by mistranslating it and putting it in Latin rather than Cyrillic script.  She can’t even get names straight, let alone sound intelligent when visiting national shrines.  A few more of these and we may have a new feature here at Hot Air.

Update: I just noticed that SondraK sent me this to my Obamateurism folder earlier.  Be sure to read her thoughts.

A coalition of great leadership.

Knucklehead on March 28, 2009 at 1:55 PM

That’s what I was thinking. I never thought I would be nostalgic for the Clinton days. Anyone is better than this arrogant radical. And even though he is incompetent, he is moving at such a fast speed and so boldly, with the approval of Congress and the media, that he is doing a lot of damage fast.

Hopefully, the moderates and independents who supported Obama will start to put the brakes on him. At least for the sake of everyone’s 401Ks, if not for the sake of justice and decency.

It is either arogance or ineptitude that led her to this embarassing moment of smart diplomacy.

myrenovations on March 28, 2009 at 1:45 PM

It’s clearly ineptitude…a bit like Al Gore’s tour of Monticello, asking who the busts of Washington and Franklin were.

That’s why I stopped playing “What if Bush/Any Republican Had Said/Done It?” Imagine the reaction of Comedy Central/Maher/MSNBC-OlbyMad/NYTLATWaPo if Condi Rice ever commited such a blunder?

I suspect the common reaction on the left to this stuff will continue to be a so-what? attitude that Maher himself offered Bill Clinton in comments he made back in ’04: Maher personally savaged GOP critics of Clinton with cries of “Yeah, Clinton made a mistake and got a beej. Bush lies and millions died.”

The discussion at popular lefty salons will be along similar lines: “So what? Hillary muffs one talking to a freaky religious dude and nobody died. Bush blah blah war criminal, oil etc….”

Imo, the most likely SNL sketch to come out of this week would be Eric Cantor at the Britney concert, which come to think of it could actually be funny (though in the cement hands of SNL its likely to turn out a 12-minute bomb loaded with personal insults).

Hillary should have been prepped. It is one thing if she asked a history professor who he thought really painted it. However, she reportedly asked the rector of the Basilica. The head of the State department should be aware of the beliefs and customs of the people she is visiting on behalf of the U.S. government.

dedalus on March 28, 2009 at 4:39 PM

The hand of Mary, whose womb our Lord Jesus Christ reside for 9 months, at work! Why did Hillary visited the shrine of Holy Mary of Guadalupe, not once but twice? Why did she offer white flowers? She has no reason to pander to Mexicans. Holy Mary of Guadalupe converted Mexicans from pagan practice of human sacrifice to Christ. Since Hillary is already christian in name, Holy Mary of Guadalupe, don’t need a miracle like San Juan Diego. Just a little curiosity and discovery of Truth embedded in the Catholic church teaching, tradition and scripture. Holy Mary of Guadalupe, patroness of Pro-Lifers, pray for us. Holy Mary of Guadalupe, protector of the unborn, pray for us.

atemely on March 28, 2009 at 4:41 PM

AMEN!

P.S. The miraculous image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was left on the cactus fibre tilma (cloak) of St. Juan Diego, a humble peasant in 1631. Of the many miracles of physical science associated with the tilma itself, to this day, no one can explain how it even exists, as the cactus fibres have a lifespan of about 20 years before disintegrating, and the tilma has not been preserved artificially in any manner.

As well, it is not known how such a detailed image could have been produced on rough cactus fibre and the “paints” used to produce the image cannot be identified – they are neither animal, vegetable or mineral in make-up.

Reproductions of the image spread throughout Mexico quickly and the bloody human sacrifice which was a staple of Aztec life ended.(During special holidays, as many as 20,000 natives were sacrificed in a day on the flat top pyrimids by the Aztec priests. The poor victims would have their hearts cut out of them while they were alive to witness it.)

Within 10 years, nine million were baptized into the Catholic faith, which to this day has been the strength and beauty of the Mexican people. Our Lady of Guadalupe has been named the Patroness of the Unborn and her intercession is asked to end the human sacrifice of abortion.

I have personally seen abortion bound women’s hearts turn away from taking the life of their children when they have seen her image outside of the abortion mill as they entered. They have gone inside and come out later, saying when they saw Our Lady’s image, they could not take the life of their child. These women may not have ever seen this image before or known it’s history. Nonethless, Our Lady’s presence helped them to choose life for their children.

Pope John Paul II named her Patroness of all the Americas.

“Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.”

No.

This is a clear case of using the ignorant sentiment among the leftist Americans to blame the US for the ills of the world, which plays well with certain so-called centrists too.

But what she did, and it’s a disgrace to the office, is to use international diplomacy as cover for her egocentric desire to affect domestic policy.

And I wouldn’t doubt it one iota if Obama used Hillary’s ego to steer her right where he wanted her to go on this.

Saltysam on March 28, 2009 at 5:08 PM

The “A” answer – the one that, had she been properly briefed, and marginally interested in what she was being briefed on – would have been to keep her pie hole shut if she didn’t know exactly what she was looking at. A respectful silence is never the wrong choice.

uncivilized on March 28, 2009 at 5:10 PM

DIRT doesn’t matter. You don’t defeat a trans-national terrorist organization by occupying medieval villages.

Yesterday, President Obama presented his “comprehensive new strategy” for Afghanistan and Pakistan. It was neither new, nor a strategy. Behind all the rhetoric, he just said, I’m sending more troops and more money.

Barack Obama? I heard Lyndon Johnson. The only LBJ touch that BHO lacked was the word “escalation.”

The rhetoric was masterly. The content was drivel. He said, “The situation is increasingly perilous.” Which situation? Why? For whom? Certainly, it’s becoming more perilous for our troops as we escalate in support of the wrong policy.

Or how about Obama’s ringing claim that the Taliban have “nothing to offer the Afghan people but terror and oppression?” Many Afghans — at least among the Pashtun plurality — don’t agree.

The tribals deep in those valleys and the Pashtuns in Pakistan feel a lot closer to the Taliban’s values than to ours. They might not mind a new road, but they’ll skip the bikinis and Budweiser, thanks. The Talibs are home-boys. We’re the foreign element. Why is that so hard to grasp?

All of this circles back to the core of the problem — and it’s not Afghanistan. Afghanistan’s not worth a mullah’s hemorrhoid. Putting the bulk of our effort into Afghanistan amounts to attacking a crisis in California by rescuing Nevada. It’s Pakistan that lies (and lies and lies) at the heart of this problem.

To his credit, Obama noted Pakistan’s importance. Then he got all the solutions wrong.

Start with his inane — but touchingly American — statement that “the people of Pakistan want the same things we want.” Oh, really?

How many readers think Sharia law would be a good idea? How about beating the crap out of women just for yuks? Or stoning them to death because they smiled at the wrong time? And let’s ban alcohol, bare arms, dating and jobs for women. And grow those beards, fellas!

And how about asking ourselves the fundamental question: “Why is India a success story and Pakistan a complete failure?” Any chance that backward Islam might have something to do with it? We can’t bribe people to succeed.

Our president identified al Qaeda as Pakistan’s No. 1 enemy. That’s wishful thinking. Pakistan’s leading enemy has always been corruption. No. 2 is its home-grown Islamist insurgency. Al Qaeda’s way down the list.

Our pathetically naive president articulated one sound goal — defeating al Qaeda — then told us how he wasn’t going to do it. Like LBJ, all he can think of is more troops and more aid. Can’t we ask ourselves why the Taliban’s thriving? After the military beatings we’ve given them? How many of our troops must die for an empty policy?

Hey, hey, ho, ho, BHO, why don’t your supporters go today?

Don’t like Albright, but good God man, she towers over Hillary in that position.

Saltysam on March 28, 2009 at 5:14 PM

The “A” answer – the one that, had she been properly briefed, and marginally interested in what she was being briefed on – would have been to keep her pie hole shut if she didn’t know exactly what she was looking at. A respectful silence is never the wrong choice.

uncivilized on March 28, 2009 at 5:10 PM

I vote “uncivilized” as primary counsel to her thighness.

I must say, though, “respectful silence” is exactly what she has no talent for whatsoever.

A really good book on Our Lady of Guadalupe – inspiring accounts of miracles granted through Our Lady’s intercession and the miraculous image itself:

The Wonder of Guadalupe

I think it is available through TAN Books.

This is a clear case of using the ignorant sentiment among the leftist Americans to blame the US for the ills of the world, which plays well with certain so-called centrists too.

Saltysam on March 28, 2009 at 5:08 PM

She has a big ego and it will probably lead to a public spat with Obama. Certainly though there is a lot of evidence supporting her point that American drug consumption funds a variety of gangs, some of which are in Mexico.

dedalus on March 28, 2009 at 5:32 PM

Once again I am amazed that our SOS cannot even figure out how to google or wiki. Obviously, she is surrounded by incompetants, but the question is “Who chose them?” My opinion is that Obama and pals threw Hillary a bone with the SOS position, knowing that she would fail. That way they have effectively undermined her position of power as Senator and she’ll be too old to run in 8 years. Thoughts, anyone?

I’m not going to get off topic and ponder why these public miracles only appear to those of the Catholic faith but I gotta tell you as a Protestant- The concept of “intercession” with God is really really offensive. It’s like slipping a $20 bill to get a good table.

God is within the heart and works within each of us. Why do we need the cult of Mary (a decidedly Catholic thing) or a relic to do that which God has pre-ordained for each of us?

highhopes on March 28, 2009 at 5:41 PM

As a Catholic and Latino, there are three things I know are absolutes:

1. God created the heavens and the earth,
2. Jesus will return, and
3. God gave the image of the Holy Mother to the Blessed Juan Diego.

How the Sec. of State could not know this, even with an entire office dedicated to this very matter displays sheer and blantant stoopidity.

Stoopid, I tells ya.

A miracle in Poland, dear to the heart of Pope John Paul involve a painting of our Lord Jesus Christ from St. Faustina’s instructions – Divine Mercy. Shrine is in Krakow, Poland but there is a shrine of the Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, MA. Pray, Hillary will visit Poland or MA, to atone for her diplomatic gaffe on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 19, 2009, Sunday after Easter. Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and the whole world. (diary of St.Faustina, book 1, p. 197)

Actually her position might be bolstered by either of those sites. They are as clueless as she.

Here’s the thing. She is surrounded by “professional” diplomats. Her department publishes notes for the public which include cultural and religious comments about other nations. Her immediate staff should be providing her with enough of a brief that she understands what visiting the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe means without making stupid comments about the namesake relic. If this were GWB’s administration, I’d suspect that the leftists of the State Department working to embarrass the President. But Hillary and the filthy liar in the White House are of the same mindset? Why are the supposedly smart careerists of the State Department letting this woman fail? She got the job as part of the post-primary deal. Is she deliberately being set up so that the filthy liar can fire her?

The reality of intercession is Christian to the core – is throughout Scriptures and finds it ultimate triumph in Jesus Christ, our Intercessor before the Father, who took our sins upon Himself on the Cross so that we could have eternal life.

On a level personal to you and I, I assume that you have at times been asked to pray for others and have asked others to pray for you. I assume that you have done so. This is called intercession. I also assume that you did not give nor take offense when doing so.

The Blessed Mother also intercedes for us by praying for us and by commending our needs to her Son. Her only concern is that we spend eternity with Him. Do I think that the prayers of the Mother of God are heard by Him in a special way? You bet I do. Do I love and honor Jesus’s Mother even by the tiniest fraction as much as He does? I hope I do.

This is my Roman Catholic faith. I will defend it to the end but I have no intention of being offensive to you while doing so.

God bless.

interesting that in the bible, Jesus never refers to her as ‘mother’….instead addressing her as woman.

and when told His brothers sisters and mother were there to see Him, He said:

Matthew 12:

46While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”[g]
48He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”

He didn’t exactly exalt her, now did He? and of course that part about His brothers is VERY inconvenient to catholics….

off topic but watch Journey Home on EWTN, Monday, 8pm EST. Last week, Marcus Grodi’s guest was a Methodist convert. Don’t confuse public miracles with personal prayer of intercession. Sometimes, we ask a friend to pray with or for us. Why not ask Mary, who birth our Lord Jesus Christ to pray with and for us. Public miracles are continuum of miracles initiated by Jesus Christ when he converted water into wine at a wedding on request of His Mother. That’s all my catechism for today.

Ah shucks yall’, with Hillary’s, (aka It’s Our Fault Clinton) competitive spirit, she wants as many gaffes as Joe and Barry!

Just a few hilliarisms:
1. Reset button.
2. “I never understood multiparty systems”
3. Sniper fire in Bosnia.
4. “Who painted it?”.
5. Assasination gaffe.
6. Mispronounced names
Thank goodness she is the smartest woman in the world!

ok, here it is…

[46-50] See Mark 3:31-35. Matthew has omitted Mark 3:20-21 which is taken up in Mark 3:31 (see the note on Matthew 12:22-32), yet the point of the story is the same in both gospels: natural kinship with Jesus counts for nothing; only one who does the will of his heavenly Father belongs to his true family.

according to YOUR source, natural kinship with Jesus counts for NOTHING…

so why do you think asking mary to interecede will help??? hmmmm??

right4life on March 28, 2009 at 6:44 PM

I was amazed when BHO picked Hillary for SOS that almost no mention was made that barely six months before the whole Obama machine, along with Leno, Letterman. Stewart, Colbert, et al, were laughing themselves sick, because Hillary’s main claim to foreign policy expertise was her story about going serpentine on the tarmac at Tusla airport. We shouldn’t really be suprised that she’s acting like a dolt, but Barry has actually been worse, serially insulting visiting heads of state, groveling before the Iranians, writing letters to the wrong leaders in Europe, unilaterally lifting sanctions on Syria and on and on. Unfortunately it’s clear our enemies have recognized what an appeasing incompetent he is, and are clearly emboldened by that fact. Despite all the left’s ranting for eight years that Bush was making us less safe by preventing another terrorist attack on US soil, Barry has done more in two months to place us all in peril, than even Bush’s worst critics could claim for his entire term.
