UN panel passes the religious-defamation resolution

posted at 2:17 pm on March 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

The UN Human Rights Council has passed the resolution calling for an end to critcism of religion around the world.  Actually, to be fair, that’s not entirely accurate.  They want an end to criticism of one particular religion — and we all know which religion that will be:

The U.N.’s top human-rights body approved a proposal by Muslims nations Thursday urging passage of laws around the world to protect religion from criticism.

The proposal put forward by Pakistan on behalf of Islamic countries — with the backing of Belarus and Venezuela — had drawn strong criticism from free-speech campaigners and liberal democracies.

A simple majority of 23 members of the 47-nation Human Rights Council voted in favor of the resolution. Eleven nations, mostly Western, opposed the resolution, and 13 countries abstained. …

Opponents of the resolution included Canada, all European Union countries, Switzerland, Ukraine and Chile.

“It is individuals who have rights and not religions,” Canadian diplomat Terry Cormier said.

India, which normally votes along with the council’s majority of developing nations, abstained in protest at the fact that Islam was the only religion specifically named as deserving protection.

I wrote about this earlier in the month, so this resolution comes as no shock to Hot Air readers.  Nor should its passage surprise anyone who has kept abreast of the UN’s efforts on “human rights”.  The HRC and its predecessor have obsessed themselves with anti-Israel and pro-Islam initiatives, and have made a mockery of efforts to oppose racism at its Durban conferences.

Cormier provided one of the few voices of sanity at the HRC.  As I noted on March 3rd:

Where does this stop?  Will the UN next declare monarchy as a protected class of beliefs, about which criticism should be treated as a hate crime?  Fascism?  White supremacy?  How about American exceptionalism?  What about Hinduism, a polytheistic belief system that Islam frequently and bitterly criticizes? …

The notion that ideas and belief systems have “rights” goes against every step towards liberty that mankind has taken.  Individuals have rights; ideas and belief systems have values and policies that should remain open for debate, criticism, satire, and ridicule.  Without that essential freedom, people will fall under the thrall of whatever belief system or ideology can exert the most force over them — a strategy practically designed by and for the radical Islamist extremists to whom the UN panders in this declaration.

This also gives us another reason to oppose initiatives like Kyoto and Copenhagen.  Along with endemic corruption and a chronic lack of accountability, the UN’s values are flat-out antithetical to America’s.  We value individual rights and free speech, and the rights of people to speak trump the nonexistent right to be free from offense — as they must, if we value free speech at all.  Pakistan and the other Islamic nations want to silence the opposition to Islam.  They’re not interested in “human rights” in the sense that Westerners see them (as individually based).

The resolution carries little effect, but it reveals the wide chasm between the West and those who hate freedom and liberty.  The latter won at the HRC, but they can only beat us here if we let them.

Today, I come before you to warn of another great threat. It is called Islam. It poses as a religion, but its goals are very worldly: world domination, holy war, sharia law, the end of the separation of church and state, the end of democracy. It is not a religion, it is a political ideology. It demands your respect, but has no respect for you.

There might be moderate Muslims, but there is no moderate Islam. Islam will never change, because it is build on two rocks that are forever, two fundamental beliefs that will never change, and will never go away. First, there is Quran, Allah’s personal word, uncreated, forever, with orders that need to be fulfilled regardless of place or time. And second, there is al-insal al-kamil, the perfect man, Muhammad the role model, whose deeds are to be imitated by all Muslims. And since Muhammad was a warlord and a conqueror we know what to expect.

Islam means submission, so there cannot be any mistake about it’s goal. That’s a given. The question is whether the British people, with its glorious past, is longing for that submission.

We see Islam taking off in the West at an incredible speed. The United Kingdom has seen a rapid growth of the number of Muslims. Over the last ten years, the Muslim population has grown ten times as fast as the rest of society. This has put an enormous pressure on society. Thanks to British politicians who have forgotten about Winston Churchill, the English now have taken the path of least resistance. They give up. They give in.

Britain seems to have become a country ruled by fear. A country where civil servants cancel Christmas celebrations to please Muslims. A country where Sharia Courts are part of the legal system. A country where Islamic organizations asked to stop the commemoration of the Holocaust. A country where a primary school cancels a Christmas nativity play because it interfered with an Islamic festival. A country where a school removes the words Christmas and Easter from their calendar so as not to offend Muslims. A country where a teacher punishes two students for refusing to pray to Allah as part of their religious education class. A country where elected members of a town council are told not to eat during daylight hours in town hall meetings during the Ramadan. A country that excels in its hatred of Israel, still the only democracy in the Middle-East. A country whose capitol is becoming ‘Londonistan’.

You might have seen my name on Fitna’s credit role, but I am not really responsible for that movie. It was made for me. It was actually produced by Muslim extremists, the Quran and Islam itself. If Fitna is considered ‘hate speech’, then how would the Court qualify the Quran, with all it’s calls for violence, and hatred against women and Jews?

Mr. Churchill himself compared the Quran to Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf. Well, I did exactly the same, and that is what they are prosecuting me for.

I wonder if the UK ever put Mr. Churchill on trial.

Ladies and gentlemen, the dearest of our many freedoms is under attack. In Europe, freedom of speech is no longer a given. What we once considered a natural component of our existence is now something we again have to fight for. That is what is at stake. Whether or not I end up in jail is not the most pressing issue. The question is: Will free speech be put behind bars?

We have to defend freedom of speech.

For the generation of my parents the word ‘London’ is synonymous with hope and freedom. When my country was occupied by the national-socialists the BBC offered a daily glimpse of hope, in the darkness of Nazi tyranny. Millions of my country men listened to it, illegally. The words ‘This Is London’ were a symbol for a better world coming soon. If only the British and Canadian and American soldiers were here.

What will be transmitted forty years from now? Will it still be ‘This Is London’? Or will it be ‘this is Londonistan’? Will it bring us hope, or will it signal the values of Mecca and Medina? Will Britain offer submission or perseverance? Freedom or slavery?

The choice is ours.

Ladies and gentlemen,

We will never apologize for being free. We will never give in. We will never surrender.

Freedom must prevail, and freedom will prevail.

Thank you very much.”

Here was the new Koran of faith and war: turgid, verbose, shapeless, but pregnant with its message.
- Winston Churchill (equating “Mein Kampf” and the Koran in his book “The Gathering Storm”)

How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property – either as a child, a wife, or a concubine – must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.
- Winston Churchill

He’s correct, but still misses the point. No person should have the right not to be criticized. By basing his no vote on this false premise, Mr. Cormier suggests that Canada would vote yes if the resolution addressed criticism of Muslims instead of criticisms of Islam.

Otherwise, we will hold them responsible for their actions. Any attempt to resists the Islamic Holy forces of Allah is pointless. We are committed to putting all of the world under our jurisdiction.

Aleph on March 27, 2009 at 3:12 PM

And so far, you’ve only got one flying over Achmed’s House of Virginal Camels, where their motto is, “Get a taste of the fruits of blowing yourself up”.

I guess crumbling your piss-filled caves to bits one by one kind of slows down your flag-making abilities.

You know whats loony? Having a bible literalist try to convince me that pi=3. Thats loony.

That’s an old joke and you beat me to it.

kingsjester on March 27, 2009 at 3:19 PM

You cannot speak out against the Holy Koran or against Mohammad, may peace be upon him, or in any way speak or act against the Islamic Holy Forces of Allah. Any group that tries to resists the Islamic Holy Forces of Allah will be destroyed. The Islamic Holy Forces of Allah will overcome the Zionist and Christian infidels and their Hotair stooges.

Allah willing.

yeah you’ll have your 7 years to run wild…then you lose, big time.

its no coincidence that the anti-christ, the beast, that son of satan, BEHEADS those who oppose him…

No dude the bible’s drivel. I could go on and on listing all the inconsistencies and passages that contradict each other. The bible is just a good work of fiction, nothing more.

acat on March 27, 2009 at 3:14 PM

Muslims also dream to see flags that read: “There is no God but Allah” fluttering in the wind over the Alamo after you fail at making your last stand there, Allah willing

I wonder what would happen if the religion of Islam came in direct conflict with………..

………… the religion of Global Warming/Climate Change?

Now, THAT would be something to watch……….

Seven Percent Solution on March 27, 2009 at 3:24 PM

So…I can use the UN to go after those wonderful peaceful followers of Islam who refer to me and those like me, Christians, as a heretical infidels worthy of the most tortuous kind of death, or in the very least treated as dhimmi’s?

What about this central tenet of Islamic law:

With legal cases being dealt with under Quranic law, every case involving a Muslim and a dhimmi receives a “peculiar” treatment in that a dhimmi is forbidden to give evidence against a Muslim. The Dhimmi’s oath being deemed unacceptable in an Islamic court, which makes it virtually impossible for any Muslim opponent to be condemned.

Based on religion…thus, can I go after Islam through the United Nations, a class-action suit, if you will, to stop this wholesale discrimination and degradation of non-Muslims?

Terry Silver on March 27, 2009 at 3:21 PM

yeah dude, thats why 2,500 years ago the bible predicted Israel would become a nation again…and it has…oh and that Iran would be its primary enemy…

all your ‘inconsistencies’ are BS. the bible has stood for millenia…its enemies are dust.

This thread is about a U.N. proposal concerning Islam, not
about Christianity. Stop projecting your guilt and misery on the rest of us and stop trying to hijack the thread.

I think that “the beast” was Nero, actually.

Christians[not Christianity] under misdirected political aspirations did cause a lot of trouble;, in addition, the first couple of Crusades were needed and accomplished their objectives,,the rest were pretty much mercenary based. It is not the fault of Christianity,,,,no where does Christ tell people to go out and kill others in his name.

retiredeagle on March 27, 2009 at 3:26 PM

Who, besides self righteous liberals, cares what the UN does? It’s like a bloated corpse…stinks, takes up alot of room but can’t move unless someone (USA) drags it in a direction it would never have gone if it still had breath. They pass their little pissant resolutions about not insulting Islam while it’s Muslims who are systematically conducting genocide in places like Darfur. Oops…can’t criticize anymore…Allah Akbar, (which loosely translated means stick it up your bunghole Allah).
