The mirage of “green jobs”
posted at 2:54 pm on March 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Barack Obama promised that his cap-and-trade energy policies would fund an explosion of “green jobs” as government pushes for mass-production-capable alternative energy sources. Spain used to think the same thing, but Bloomberg reports that the explosion turned into an implosion (via Barcepundit):
Subsidizing renewable energy in the U.S. may destroy two jobs for every one created if Spain’s experience with windmills and solar farms is any guide.
For every new position that depends on energy price supports, at least 2.2 jobs in other industries will disappear, according to a study from King Juan Carlos University in Madrid.
U.S. President Barack Obama’s 2010 budget proposal contains about $20 billion in tax incentives for clean-energy programs. In Spain, where wind turbines provided 11 percent of power demand last year, generators earn rates as much as 11 times more for renewable energy compared with burning fossil fuels.
Spain wound up paying $775,000 for every green job they created through subsidies since 2000. That’s almost $100,000 per year per job, and that cost only includes the created jobs. The cost of the 2.2 jobs lost would hike that cost considerably, as well as the lost tax revenues, the increased government assistance, and the opportunity costs for pulling capital out of the markets.
Why did the jobs disappear? In part because of the higher capital confiscation of the government, and in part because the green policies pushed industry out of Spain. Actually, the study didn’t count jobs lost through “industrial relocation”, which in this case amounts to capital flight. The largest stainless-steel producer in Spain directly linked its decision to move operations to South America to the higher energy costs imposed by the government.
In the US, we could see a massive flight, and not just in manufacturing. High-tech industries that rely on cheap energy could be forced to find less expensive environments. Bloomberg’s economist notes that Microsoft and Google have already relocated their servers once to get cheaper energy. The Internet is flexible enough to allow employers to go almost anywhere in the world to host their servers, and in this economy, there will be plenty of competition for them.
Before we buy into the “green jobs” argument, we’d better make sure existing jobs don’t disappear into a wormhole at a faster rate.
Update: I forgot to hat-tip Barcepundit. My apologies — I thought I had included his link originally. Be sure to visit his site for his thoughts.

Yep, as Levin was describing yesterday on his radio show, there is a farmer from the Midwest, I believe, who has stopped planting on 800 acres in order to ‘cultivate carbon credits’. He gets paid, by some Chicago company, for his carbon credits he earns by not planting anything. This is the biggest scam in the history of the world.

Right out of the Nazi Party Platform written by Adolf Hitler;
“We demand a land reform suitable to our needs, provision of a law for the free expropriation of land for the purposes of public utility, abolition of taxes on land and prevention of all speculation in land.”
“We demand the creation of a healthy middle class and its conservation, immediate communalization of the great warehouses and their being leased at low cost to small firms, the utmost consideration of all small firms in contracts with the State, county or municipality.”
“We demand the nationalisation of all (previous) associated industries (trusts).”
“We demand a division of profits of all heavy industries.”
“The first obligation of every citizen must be to work both spiritually and physically. The activity of individuals is not to counteract the interests of the universality, but must have its result within the framework of the whole for the benefit of all Consequently we demand:”

To review : Our energy costs will skyrocket as Obastard will not drill our own oil while bankrupting the coal industry and refusing to build nuclear power plants at the same time. The US will instead invest billions in alternate energy that has already proven to be inadequate while making the US even more dependent on foreign oil. Is this his plan or did I leave something out?

America will be a different ballgame. More like we will lose 5 or 6 jobs
for every “green” job created. This experiment will lead to a worldwide
depression and it will take people with “real vision” to overcome the
green weenies like Al Gore. Just look to Kalifornia, rolling blackouts
this summer that should herald a new brave era in such expensive
energy that many companies will flee the state as that will be the last straw.
The last ones leaving Kalifornia won’t have to turn out the lights,
there won’t be any power to run them.

Thankfully we have this called the unemployment rate that’s the ultimate determiner of how effective he is with the economy. And when it reaches double-digits, his rhetoric will ring hollow.

The whole Green thing is such a joke. We have our “esteemed” Senator Feinstein blocking solar panels in the Mojave desert because they might harm some tortoise or something.
If you can’t build solar panels in the God-forsaken Mojave Desert (used to live in the High Desert – it is God-forsaken), where in the world do you build them?
And yet, I’m sure Sen. Feinstein blathers on about Green this and Alternative Energy that, until it comes time to actually do something and it all falls apart for a tortoise.
It’s pathetic and unserious. Just like the president’s proposals.

Not gonna search for it now… but there was an article last week about a new Study out…
Apparently the overpressuization caused by windmills is causing damgae to Bats inner ears…
And of course, in an unrelated article, the Senator for California called for no Solar Power plants in the California deserts… because it ruins how it looks…
I ran the numbers last year, and if you take all the energy we use for transportation (calculate the amount of Kilowatt hours per barrel of oil), you would need to deliver 1.4 times the amount of electricity generated in the US last year for transportation alone….
Now, with the physcis problem of Line losses (almost 50% of the electricity generated never reaches the consumer)… you would therefore have to generate 3.8 TIMES the amount of electricity we generated last year to support both consumers, and transportation.
Wind and solar my A$$.
Romeo13 on March 27, 2009 at 3:30 PM
There’s an assumption at the heart of all these tax-the-rich and fund-the-green proposals, and it’s a lie: rich people and factories have no choice. Rich people, though, will stop working so hard or will move their accounts and homes elsewhere; factories will do the same. They have done it in Spain and in California. They will leave the US as well.
PattyJ on March 27, 2009 at 3:32 PM
Other than assassination or abdication, impeachment is the only way to be rid of him….as far as I know.
“High crimes and Misdemeanors”…I reckon Obama won’t be found guilty of any ‘crimes’….but I do wonder if his abject incompetence can rise to such a nationally threatening level that we can impeach under the concept of ‘misdemeanor’.
The next hurdle is getting congress to go along with it. Fat chance. They’re in collusion.
I think more radical measures may well be necessary.

What all these libs seem to forget is that coal and petroleum come from the Earth as well in their zeal to find ways to supposedly replace them.
One of the biggest lies ever is that the world is ready to run out of oil. i’m not saying we shouldn’t find different ways of doing things, but this is just fn’ stupid.
There are tons of missed opportunities for wealth creation, jobs for middle class people, and lower prices for consumer missed becuase of these greenie tards. Oil shale in Colorado and other places goes unused, oil off shore and onshore goes unused cuz they will not let anyone explore for it.
It’s utterly amazing how libs don’t trust big business for anything, but will trust big government for damn near everything. It makes me even more sure by the day that liberalism is a mental illness.

We don’t need impeachment…
Just a fair hearing by the courts on the meaning of the “Native Born Citizen” requirement for President…
The founders were clear by their writing that they put that in so you would not have a President with any chance of divided loyalties, and the common definition at the time of the signing, was that Native Born meant both born in America, and of an American Citizen FATHER.
Technicality? maybe… but it is an interesting Constitutional question…

The environmental movement seems to flourish off accidents that happen. Anyone who has ever been to Santa Barbara, CA sees oil derricks offshore that have gone unused for years because of an accident 40 years ago that the government helped create from what I read.

You know what makes me laugh about the bat argument… what ever happened to darwins Survial of the Fittest? They force us to learn evolution then require us to not utilize that information.
Part of the ‘Smart Grid’ technology is trying to reduce line loss (it will always remain around 25-30%). And that is one of the times i think the government kinda has a use in, open bids for government loans to the power companies for capital investment in upgrading the electrical grid of this country. However green jobs are a falacy. The only time solar can become a viable source is if the US Manufactures solar pannels, but guess why we cant? ENVIROMENTAL REGULATIONS. It takes a ton of very bad chemicals to make a Photovoltiac cell. But if we stimulate manufcaturing the panels cheap enough to toss em on yer roof… i think thats a damn good plan.
Electric cars are never going to work unless we find a way to use solid state capactors as the battery source.

Yes, except nobody rides to the rescue.
We must “sacrifice.” That would be “we” as in *us*, you and me. Not, say Obama, or any of his cronies in power. *They* need not suffer, as they are superior, and without them, the rest of us would not have enough intelligence to take care of ourselves or survive; not to mention the planet would die!!!!111eleventy!
We will shiver and suffer and go without, because they think we should. They really do think we should. I can’t emphasize that enough.
They think Americans have been Bad Children, and need to Learn Our Lesson. For a good long time. We are all guilty (mostly for just being here, but also for being a successful society), and besides, we don’t need much anyhow, being the lowly masses.
They, of course – those in (they hope)perpetual power – can have and do whatever they like. They *should* live in comfort, as we are dependent on them, in their natural superiority. So they can jet everywhere, eat the finest foods, warm their homes, accumulate wealth, because they are, naturally, the exceptions to the rules they make.
Essentially, these leftists hate people. They hate us. They can’t just knock us off, so the least they can do is make us do with a lot less prosperity. A lot less. Every single step this administration takes is to that end.
And whatever we do have, we must spread around to others who don’t have as much. And I do mean spread around – not just here, but all over the world.
And people voted for this? People actually want these things? More suffering (in a land of plenty, yet!), less security, eating dirt and groveling before every other country in the world – people actually want this?
Alana on March 27, 2009 at 4:02 PM
Lest I forget – mere suffering isn’t enough. We must also be coerced into “mandatory volunteerism” – i.e., forced to work directly for the government.

Last year, I had a chance to drive through a wide swath in Belgium and France and I was shocked by the number of wind turbines we encountered. Yes, that is correct: 3!!
