Glenn Beck: It’s time for a march on Washington
posted at 7:20 pm on March 27, 2009 by Allahpundit
He’s playing this off like he’s just tossing out the idea, but come on: Anyone not think he’s at least toying with the possibility of planning a mass protest himself? His Oprah-fied populism is a huge hit; why not take it to the next level and see how many people he can pull into the streets for a march? He could even get this guy to don his cravat and lead the parade. It won’t do much to scare Congress so long as The One’s approval rating is high, but it might be a shot in the arm for the GOP. All they need is a date — Tax Day? May Day? — and a few hundred thousand conservatives willing to take a day off and travel a few hundred (or thousand) miles. Exit question: Would you go? Nah, you wouldn’t.

Finally, I’m getting some back up on this! See, “Michele Bachmann, Saving America”:

How about a march on Allahpundit? I mean seriously, dude, what’s your problem with people who believe REAL ACTION is possible.
You know what? Go hide under the bed and let the real men straighten our your idol’s mess. The One, Pelosi and Reed, they gotta go.
Stay under the bed, maybe we’ll let you stay.
I mean, seriously – grow a f*cking pair why-don’t-cha!?!

Conservatives don’t do frothy. We do strong and black. Maybe a little sugar.
katy on March 27, 2009 at 8:20 PM
A conservative march will never accomplish anything, especially with the MSM more hostile than ever toward us.
We ought to create more practical ways to spend that kind of money.
jgapinoy on March 27, 2009 at 8:20 PM
The ATL would be classic if Fox pundits do it there…
- Right in CNN’s hometown…
- The ATLis the unofficial home of the “fair tax”
- Easy for people to fly to
- tons of hotel space
- the real conservative pols will make the trip, leaving the RINOs separated from the heard
- much better entertainment after the Tea Party than DC…

Doing my part…
Subject: Notify the Press!!!!
Please write local reporters and media about the April 15 Tea Party. Here’s a sample email, fax, or letter.
To the Editor:
People from around the St. Louis area will hold a Nationwide Tax DayTea Party at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15. The St. Louis event will be in Kiener Plaza in downtown St. Louis.
We are gathering to protest against a Congress and a White House who continue to steal money from our future to pay for irresponsible borrowing and lending.
The US government has borrowed over $3 trillion dollars from us since September, and has taken responsibility for another $8 trillion in private debt. Now, President Obama wants to encourage more of the bad behavior that caused this crisis with a $75 billion bailout for homeowners. Nancy Pelosi wants another $500 billion for pork barrel projects to go along with billions of dollars of pork in the so-called stimulus package. And the Obama administration will use our tax dollars to help Gitmo terrorists acclimate to US society after their release on American soil!
We believe that in this present crisis, government is not the solution to the problem; government IS the problem.
Join us in Kiener Plaza on April 15 at 6:30 to tell the President and Congress to get out of our wallets.
Sincerely,
[your name]

What exactly does Oprahfied mean? Does it refer to the occasional crying?
I do think Beck is a tad melodramatic, but he gets his point across. That is for sure.

I live in Indiana. Not too long of a drive for me. I’ll be there. Hopefully the event will be on a Saturday so I can leave Thursday night after work and take a vacation day on Friday. Regardless, I don’t care if the march is on a Tuesday morning – I’ll be there.
Ummmm… July 4th is on a Saturday this year.

I know some people here in Indiana who are very conservative, but to be honest, I don’t think they would go to a march. They are almost too conservative if you know what I mean. They don’t want to stand out or be loud…but they will vote. That is how people like Mike Pence can still get elected here.
Terrye on March 27, 2009 at 8:27 PM
I like Becks message but I can barely stand to watch. He’s just too goofy most of the time.

Beck is definitely playing an important role in bringing new people into the conservative movement.
Saltysam on March 27, 2009 at 8:30 PM
Gee, 60 million people voted against this idiot, and nearly 50 million bothered not to vote, scared away by the charge of racism, or tired of the rigged voting that never gets prosecuted.
But say HALF those that voted against, 30 million, march quietly on their state capitals and on DC.
Who’d listen?
I’ll take that bet.
klickink.wordpress.com on March 27, 2009 at 8:30 PM
See, that’s part of the problem and I understand it. Conservatives have been just too proper. We seem to have lost the will to fight. I’m talking rolling in the mud, down in the gutter fighting.
Are you in Mike Pence’s district?

No I wouldn’t go. Primarily because I don’t usually do political things, and these days political things have the possibility of having hair triggers taped all over them.
With my son being quadriplegic and me providing the 24 hour care he needs, I’m not about to expose him to a bunch of liberal idiot anti-protesters and end up in jail for killing one or more of them for even breathing hard on my son.
I’ll let Glen take up my slack on that one.

But I think the tea parties could work better in an area like this.

Terrye on March 27, 2009 at 8:36 PM
What exactly are we asking for in this “march”. I mean Obama is going to be President for some time. A march can’t change that. I might protest the passage of any more spending. I called Congress about that. But there needs to be more of a point than I’m just really uncomfortable about what Obama is doing.
I guess if there was more definition to the march. But this is just way vague. “Let’s march because Obama won the election?”

Where were all of the Beck Lovers when he was on CNNHN? Oh, that’s right, no one here will watch CNN. Believe it or not, Glenn has been like this for well over a year. He was about the only pundit on my ‘must watch’ list during the election season (O’Reilly was totally up Bambam’s a**, and Colmes just bugged the hell out me on H&C). It strikes me as comical that NOW all the Cons find him ‘the new voice in the wilderness’ now that he is on Fox. And why is it that ‘a leader, or leaders’ are needed in order to form a march? Are Cons not able to organize themselves? Hell, even the Fiberals manage to do that. Far Right, Far Left, getting to be harder and harder to find a difference anymore…
pcbedamned on March 27, 2009 at 8:43 PM
I understand what you’re saying. But I’d sure be willing to go to DC. Incredibly, I’ve never been, but I think this is would be the perfect first time!
Terrye, was there a Tea Party in Indianapolis?
Oink on March 27, 2009 at 8:43 PM
We lost an election or two because our pols were dancing around the dictates of the MSM. We’re losing a fight in DC right now because our pols are dancing that same dance.
It is now time to dictate our own dance and if this is how we do it, then we must do it loud and clear and the MSM will either follow or get out of the way.
katy on March 27, 2009 at 8:43 PM
Sure hope so. If not Glenn, then someone.
Would I go? You betcha. I’d like to exhaust non-violent options in the hope of avoiding open insurrection. And with the emerging assault on private property, free speech, rights to bear arms, etc., that’s where it’s headed.
petefrt on March 27, 2009 at 8:44 PM
A march?
Why the hell not.
Count me in, Glenn.

I’m going to the Tea Party in St. Paul, MN on 4/15/09. I would travel to D.C. for a “Tea Party”. Only this time I would be bringing my pitch fork and other “tools” of rebellion.
cjs1943 on March 27, 2009 at 8:44 PM
I agree. Folks, we have to quit being scared and pi$$ed. We have to draw our line in the sand. We have to empower ourselves.
Oink on March 27, 2009 at 8:44 PM
Yeah. Tea parties and such are not going to cut it either.
The Boston tea party was an act of outright rebellion. Protesting with a sign and giving it a cute label just isn’t the same.
What we need is and act that has the same audacity as the Boston Tea Party.
Saltysam on March 27, 2009 at 8:45 PM
Are we represented? Each so-called representative in the House supposedly represents almost a million people. Is that a truly representative body, or is that a collective, party-controlled, oligarchy? Can you truly say with a straight face that any one person can represent the interests of a million people? Bull-pucky!
If we want true representation, the House need to expand by a factor of four so that the regular citizens could run and win without having to kiss the -er- ring of party bosses. Unfortunately, short of major upheaval, this isn’t going to happen.
Random Numbers (Brian Epps) on March 27, 2009 at 8:45 PM
The only other tool you should be talking about is a sign or silly string. Don’t be talkin’ crazy.

I live in California. If there is a NATIONAL protest in DC (as opposed to some locals), I will take time off work, put my kids at Grandma’s house, and fly back East to be there.
Heck, I might even take the kids with me. It would be a good learning experience for them.
crosspatch on March 27, 2009 at 8:45 PM
Just my .02.
I’ve posted before about an experience where I was part of a 10,000 man march on Harrisburg for gun rights. It was about the time of Santorum’s first senate run. About half of the people there were legally armed.
Well, on the way back, we hear the bombastic music
ANNR – “There was a big rally in harrisburg today”
US – “Yeah. we made the news – great”
ANNR – At least 25 people were in senator snothead’s office protesting the plight of the homeless… now for a break”
US – “WTF, WTF?? maybe they’ll talk about us after the break”
ANNR – “In other news today the Phillies are 5 and 4….”
US “WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF WTF ??”
Same thing with the newspaper. Senator Snothead and the 25 deadbeat supporters on the cover above the fold.. The story about 10000 people on the steps — C8, about 1/8 page and half of that was propaganda from the Brady Campaign.
If Beck is going to pull this off, the only way to do it is to set up internet feeds out the wazooo.
BTW – In spite of the fourth estate/fifth column, we did get what we were trying to get.. I guess even the denses legislators looked at the votes (and the fact that the 5000 people on their doorstep were friendly – at least they were on that day :)

I think Republican’s lack the kind of leader that can inspire and lead the majority of us to do anything more than useless things like write letters and protest in Washington and this somehow equals me being an Obama sycophant in your mind?
Perhaps it’s a good thing that the majority of people don’t have any fight in them if people like you are completely unable to even begin to identify the enemy.
Not that your ad hominem merits a response, but, for your information, the book I’m currently reading is Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell. Before that it was a collection of Reagan’s speeches. Before that it was a work on Stoicism by Seneca. Obviously I’m a flaming, liberal commie here.
Did it occur to you that the proper response to an discussion that people don’t have the will or leadership to fight is to provide evidence that they in fact do have the will to fight rather than to insult the person making the argument?
JadeNYU on March 27, 2009 at 8:46 PM

JellyToast on March 27, 2009 at 8:48 PM
Consider me there, I’m only a 30 minute drive away, and WILL take the day off, paid or not. The reason the left fills the room is because they either have no job, or have a shit ton of payed days off. Face it, we are either working, or raising a family, too busy to protest. We leave it to the skimmers, the ones with all of the free time at our expense.
I’m done! I do OK, but this regime will tax me right out of my house. Between the middle class tax slam coming, cap & trade, and a State Government out of control, they may very well put me out of a home that as of now, I can afford. They will never break me, I will always work rather than take public assistance.
I’m doing the Tea Party in Annapolis on the 15th. I will proudly wear my JPFO T-Shirt, “I WILL LIVE FREE”, not for free. Nice shirt, the Declaration Of Independence, and the classic Minute Man, only he has traded his Kentucky Rifle for an M-14.
See you there!

Glenn is a motivator. Remember the Rallies for America ? Glenn organized them as a way to show support for the troops.
I was at the Cleveland Rally on 3/2/03. The weather was about 25 with light flurries, but about an estimated 10,000 showed up. Flags and patriotism were abundant. Emotions were stirred and citizens responded.
He can do it again.

Just walk through the streets of DC without saying a word. No signs. No chants. Just a million civilians walking together, peacefully and quietly, carrying a lot of cold steel.

You shouldn’t worry what other people think, whether they’re too proper or suspicious. Our freedoms are constantly being attacked on daily basis and we need to fight back before it’s too late! I am very worried how fast we’re on this socialism track since BHO has been in office…very, very worried. We still have some time yet to change our country around. We need to fight back and the sheeple need to wake up before it’s too late!!

ex-Democrat on March 27, 2009 at 8:50 PM
I can’t really comment now, gotta run, but WOW! I was SHOCKED when I read this! This ranks as one of the greatest posts ever at Hotair! Conservatives talking with our feet! That’s what I’m talking about! That’s where we are folks. That’s what needs to be done. And we need these conservative talk show hosts to get the ball rolling, put the word out, get people organized for some peaceful marches. What good is it to build up an audience with tens of millions of listeners and never make anything of it. If you have tens of millions of people listening to you who love you, who adore you, and respond to you and spend hours listening to you every week. If you can’t use those audiences and you can’t mobilize those audiences to influence a couple hundred thousand conservatives, many of whom are evangelical Christians, what’s the point of complaining day in and day out. If conservatives really want change we need to build a mass movement and we need lot’s of people to join us. I’m talking about peaceful marches that fill the streets! If we don’t do this now we will never ever take back the Republican party. We will never have a conservative movement that is truly conservative. Right now we have lesser of the evils. The Democrats are worse than the Republicans. I believe that. I believe that Barack Obama is worse than John McCain. I believe that. But, even John McCain and the Republican party are not offering us answers. The American people desperately want answers! The American people are worried about our borders. That’s why the American people rose up against the illegal alien amnesty bill. That illegal alien amnesty bill had overwhelming support in the Congress; had overwhelming support from the news media; from all the people in the establishment; from the multi-national corporations that control this country – but the America people rose up and said “We don’t want this!” and threatened Senators and Congressmen with defeat! And that brought down that bill and prevented that catastrophe from becoming law giving amnesty to another 25 million illegal aliens. And so the American people are concerned. They sense that we’re going in the wrong direction. They sense something is wrong. They understand that we’re in alot of trouble. Things have to change. It has to change. People need to want it though. We need to aspire to build a movement like this. That will stand for what’s right. That will stand for the truth. That will stand up for justice. That will save America and will take America back.
P.S. Full marks to AP and Glenn Beck. Now if we could just get those folks to believe the God of the Holy Bible (only) and get saved, we’d accomplish something ever greater!!

I would go, all the way from the Midwest.
And for all those who doubt that marches make a difference, I can tell you that they do. The marches during the 60s for civil rights and against the war drew attention to the issues. And the larger they became the more influence they had on the government. Slime like Schumer assume that people don’t care because they never see any response from people. Marches do what simply writing petitions and sending emails cannot, put faces on the protests.

Each representative represented far fewer than 1,000,000 people at the founding of the United States.
In Federalist Papers 55 and 56 it says that a representative should have a district with no more than 30,000 people.

I’ll go even further: From your moniker, and not knowing your age, I might hazard a guess that you’re either a student, a grad, staff or faculty member of NYU. From your lack of initiative you’ve exhibited in your placations, you have no desire to start anything like a business or to be your own boss, opting to let others do all the heavy lifting and take the risk while you stand on the sidelines and hope nothing goes wrong because it would affect your little world somehow. You’re the type who might cheer for one side in a battle, but if that side loses, you’ll run out and bayonette the wounded to ingratiate yourself to the winners.

The thing about this though is that just last week Glenn was saying that we shouldn’t march on Washington right now because it would be the wrong thing to do at the wrong time. I have stood for election against a liberal district rep who held the office for 40 years. I mean, if he’s just a liberal presence for MM to fend of the Fairness Doctrine Dogs, then how sincere can she be about being a true conservative?
AP’s gotta go.

I will attend local Tea Parties but I doubt I could travel to DC. We can adopt many of the tactics that the loony left has used in their protests over the years but not the style. I would say have a fife and drum corp dressed in 1776 fashion with a Color Guard to lead the march, dress in the attire you wear for work be it Carharts or business. I would also have Samuel Adam’s and Patrick Henry’s famous speeches read aloud, they inspire me when I need it.

Hell yes I’d go. I will either be driving across the country or participating closer to home.
We are condeming our children to a less bright future and laying the foundation for the demise of our republic.
We are at the precipice.

Anyone know if there is ANYTHING going on in New Mexico, I mean, besides the occasional Mexican Army incursion, on April 15th?

The enumeration of the House is left to the Hose, true. Until the end of the 19th Century, the House expanded it’s numbers with the population. Theere has been no such expansion for the last century, save for the addition of new States. Is it any wonder that there has been no viable third party threat to either of the two major parties for more than a century? The House should be the cauldron in which third parties are formed, but it is now under the semi-oligarchical control of two groups. I seriously doubt that the Founding Fathers would approve. I would go farther and say that they would be rabidly opposed to such a non-representative government-by-party situation and would countenance resistance, perhaps even rebellion, against such.
Try reading the words of the Framers. Government by, of andd for the Party is NOT their goal. They wanted government by, of, and for the PEOPLE. The current system serves to stifle the people, not serve them.

A hit and a miss.
I’m a mid-westerner born and raised. I worked hard all the way through high school and graduated 6 in a class of 400. I was 1 of 6 students at my school to get the I.B. Diploma that year and 1 of 4 students to complete the two semester Organic Chemistry course.
I was able to afford NYU because I’d worked so hard through high school and I got half of it covered in scholarships including a National Merit scholarship. I finished at NYU in 3 years because I always took the maximum number of credits allowed.
After college I moved into a studio apartment with a roommate to save money and worked my butt of in order to repay my student loans in 5 years.
Now, I work ~50/week because I both like my job and I’m helping my parents pay their bills. With the rest of the money, I sponsor a boy in India and a girl in Bangladesh through World Vision and have 3 active loans on Kiva.org. I also donate money to political causes/candidates that I like such a both of Bush’s campaigns (I worked 70 hours in the call center and was a pollworker for his second campaign), McCain’s election (more of a lesser of two evils scenario), Concerned Women for America, and others.
I recommend that, in the future, you don’t pretend to know who someone is based on their screen name and a single comment that you seem to purposely be misreading.
Now, back to my question, what have you done to take a stand that makes you A) so much braver and B) so much better than me?

There’s one in Denver if you’re up for the drive.

If you will get your head out of your resume’, as impressive as you make it sound, and look, you’ll see I answered you.

Oink:
I saw this at the WIBC website:
Protesters are planning a modern-day “tea party” on the steps of the Indiana statehouse.
This time, organizers aren’t speaking out against a tea tax; they’re protesting spending in Washington.
Indianapolis Tea Party spokesman Dustin Doyle cites the federal bank bailout plan as an example. He claims dozens of fellow frustrated Hoosiers have been attending grassroots meetings to organize the upcoming event.
Doyle says the goal of the tea party is to send a message to state and federal lawmakers that there is growing opposition to irresponsible spending. He expects up to 3,000 people to attend.
The protest is set for April 15 from Noon to 2:00 p.m.
I went to DC back in the 80′s. I was there with WIFE {Women Involved in Farm Economics} to lobby for family farms.
It is a great place to visit.

This came through while I was still writing my post, so you can ignore my final question as you already answered it.
I’m glad to have you on the conservative side in spite of the fact that you seem a bit unable to identify who are your political friends and who are your political enemies.
As it turns out, we’ve done a lot of the same things politically, I suppose the difference between us is that you are still optimistic and believe they’re effective and I’ve grown pessimistic and doubt that anyone in Washington or the various state houses are listening.
That doesn’t make me a liberal and it doesn’t make me a coward….it could possible make me a negative nelly or just a realist (depending on whether or not they actually are listening).
Keep up the good work, but do try to save the fight for the actual liberals.

Hmmmmmm. I hear Denver is nice this time of year….

And I recommend to you that the next time you want to spar with people who are tired of what’s ahppening to their country AND want to do something about it besides write a bread and butter letter, you go have a nice warm bath and then put your feet up.
AubieJon on March 27, 2009 at 9:20 PM
Other than an occasional 2 feet of snow and gale force winds in late March, it really is. Michelle Malkin was here for the tax rally a few months ago at the capitol. This one will be much bigger.

Sorry wrong answer. Take your Rice-a-Roni, the San Francisco Treat and leave in shame.
What you don’t get is that Beck isn’t preaching “frothy populism.” There is a groundswell of real Americans who have had it watching the filthy liar and complicit traitors like McCain and your own cowardly Buckeye RINOs. The time to take America is now. Incumbent polticians are not going to be unseated without national organization.

We will be planning our own Million Man March on Washington, DC to protest the plans of President and Democratically controlled Congress to “Sock-it-to the Wealthy” with their “Steal from the Hard-Working” programs. Their “Potato in Every Pot and Hand in Every Pocket” plan is just going too far. Instead of the ceremonial burning of the American Flag we will be burning the works of Karl Marx instead. Everyone is encouraged to bring a copy for the burning. For those having difficulty locating a copy of the Communist Manifesto might try their local library; I understand that each library has at least 15 or 20 copies that were placed their by the DNC. Just remember to bring back the ashes so you wont be charged for losing a book. You will have reduced it to its lowest common denominator so there should be no charges. See you in Washington….
Remember the Tea Party

granted. but there’s a reason it has not changed with the size of the population. substantially increasing congress’ size would not serve your interests at all. you would end up with a representative whose power and voice would be diluted among the thousands of others (as you suggest). that rep would probably have 2 minutes of floor time in an entire cycle, and the vote would be worth just as much as now, since states would still be represented at current proportions. your local cause would not get any more attention. and that’s not to mention the enormous bureaucracy, tens of thousands of gov’t paid staff, etc. so i guess james madison is not rolling in his grave just yet, if you know what i mean.
also, see my previous point about state legislatures, etc.

With the bonus of burning jet fuel and adding to the carbon footprint? You bet your ass I would.

Tax Day? May Day? — and a few hundred thousand conservatives willing to take a day off and travel a few hundred (or thousand) miles. Exit question: Would you go? Nah, you wouldn’t.
I’ve been thinking a lot about this question. 2 jobs, 3 kids 6 and under, mortgage payment, utility bills,… hmmmmmm. Road trip to DC does not sound like it’s in my future. I like Chuck Norris’ idea, fire them all then rehire the honest ones.

And everybody should visit. The problem is all the elected officials who never leave. We need the Congressional version of terminex to get rid of the infestation.
