Congress about to tackle the biggest issue of our time
posted at 12:55 pm on March 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
I respect and like Orrin Hatch. I hate the BCS. So why does this make me grit my teeth? Andrew Malcolm captures the absurdity of Congressional intervention in college-football championships:
Well, now that Congress has pretty much taken care of all the other problems confronting the country these days, the U.S. Senate has decided to help decide how the United States’ collegiate football champion is determined.
A Judiciary committee subcommittee involved with antitrust and competition policies will hold hearings. The move is driven by Republican Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah. It’s probably pure coincidence that despite going undefeated, Utah was ignored for last fall’s BCS football championship game that ended up pitting against each other the pitiful people of Florida and Oklahoma, both of whom had one loss. At night’s end Oklahoma had two L’s.
Imagine going with those twin nothing places when the TV network could have had several hundred Utahans watching.
Senator Hatch is a good guy, a genuine gentleman, and an occasional guest on my show. But this is a silly, and more to the point, illegitimate use of Congress’ time.
No one dislikes the BCS more than I do. It’s nothing more than a sop to the sportswriters who rank Division I college football teams and to the media that live off the controversy. The NCAA has playoffs in its other football divisions without causing the collapse of Western civilization or Academia. There is no reason why Division I can’t devise a playoff system that would eliminate the frustration of its fans, players, and schools.
But is that a federal issue? In fact, it’s not even a government issue. The NCAA is a private organization, and its decision on how to declare a champion its own. Only under the most liberal reading of the interstate commerce compact would Congress have any jurisdiction on this issue — and I use liberal deliberately, in all its contexts.
Even if it was a federal issue, would it be such a pressing problem in comparison to the myriad of real issues facing the country at the moment? The fate of our borders and the quality of our liberty has scant connection to the BCS. The actions of the federal government in enforcing immigration laws, its drug-war policies, counterterrorism efforts, and so on should be the focus of Senate subcommittees now, not parochial resentments over BCS bowl placements.
Given enough opportunity, I’m sure Senator Hatch will agree.

On second thought, perhaps that is really when our troubles will begin..

You know what, I’d rather Congress waste time on something as frivolous as the BCS. Look at what they have done in ‘trying’ to fix the economy. A whole lot of nothing. All they’ve done so far is bankrupt the nation and led us down the path of class warfare.
More BCS commissions please.

Leaders, you have more important things to do then to worry about football and a talk show host.
Like maybe reading bills before you vote for them????

Oh my GOODNESS!!??!! Seriously? They have TIME for this? Republicans need to spend every waking moment finding their way back to their conservative roots AND stopping the socialist dem machine that is rapidly chewing up every bit of liberty we have.
As much as I find the BCS one of THE most useless things of our generation, it doesn’t affect my life IN THE LEAST! This 0bamba thing DOES! Do your JOB CONGRESS!!! STOP putting your nose where it belongs the LEAST!!!!
Sponge on March 27, 2009 at 1:02 PM
The BCS isn’t perfect, but it’s leaps and bounds better then the polls that it replaced.
One’s win loss record should not be the only thing that matters. What matters is who did you beat. Loading up your schedule with weak sister teams in order to get a good win/loss record used to be the way to get into the good bowls.

I officially amend my position…if this indeed stops them from passing any other bills, or “helping our economy”, we need more football, basketball, volleyball, badminton, fencing, etc. commissions.
And please Obama, keep your focus on talk show hosts, and do not do anything to “help” us, your re-election is paramount, push the bills aside and campaign your heart out…
right2bright on March 27, 2009 at 1:05 PM
Yeah… this is sooooo important!!! I mean, the BCS is far more in need of attention than the Dream Act that was just resurrected with Republican support? Yes, Congress should stay out of this. But it is yet another example of the media enabling, crowning and perpetuating their “champions” through bias and excessive and disproportionately distributed hyperbole. Florida may have been the better team…or not. But no way were the media thugs going to let a flyover zone school like Utah lay claim to the title.

as silly as it seems, college football is big business and the bcs is a monopoly that basically freezes out the majority of D1 college programs for competing for the national championship and the money that goes to playing these big time bowl games or the games that would lead to a national championship like playoffs.
They freeze them out, its unamerican…and as silly as it seems, it is an appropriate use of congress time.
heck, its a better use of their time than what they usually do….think of ways to screw us.

Cantor hosts a fundraiser at a Britney Spears concert. Evidently, he should have stayed home that night to do his homework so that he and Boehner could slap something together better than a glitzy marketing proposal. For crying out loud, Darrin Stevens used to provide Larry Tate with something more substantive on the fly in Bewitched than that puff piece that the House GOP rolled out. And now this? Tell Hatch to put on his f***ing reading glasses, and start poring over the reams of nonsense that Obama’s ramming through seemingly without an objection, for the purpose of doing just that–raise some objections.
Obama fiddles while Rome burns–as the GOP alternately pours gas or heads for the hills.

Only in this universe. In an incident three universes over, the NFL took over college football, which caused an unfortunate nuclear exchange between the United States and Canada over a bad call in the Division II playoffs held at the Ice Bowl which was later traced to a referee who needed Braille to find the restroom. Manitoba was reduced to slag, and the beaver population swelled in the nuclear winter that followed. The beavers cut down all the forests, and, desperate for work, migrated to cities all over North America where they displaced the rats…

My 401k is worth 48% compared to this time last year. The county is fighting an ongoing war on terrorism. There is unrest at the souther border. Regardless of what the Secretary of State says, it’s not the US’s fault. The UN want to take over control of everything, in spite of the fact they are corrupt bunglers who have proven all they can do is steal money and molest little girls. The county is overrun with illegal aliens, in this economy tell me what job an american won’t do. Illiteracy is at an all time high in spite of record spending on education. One of the benefits of locating the nation’s capital in DC was that it was hot and humid in the summer, so Congress always left, giving it less time to make mischief. Sigh… Just to give those of you not aware of who Hatch is, he’s a 75 year old bitty that has been in office as a senator for 32 years.
He should be crapping baby food into his diapers and not pontificating on what judges this nation needs.
He chairs the Senate Committee on the Judiciary, even though he couldn’t identify a good judge if he gummed one in his daily bowl of prunes. He shouldn’t be given control over the common room remote control and definitely not wielding anything other than a colostomy bag.

The schools in Utah get screwed over by the BCS on a regular basis because their fans will not stimulate the local economy of the bowl hosting city nearly as much as other teams that bring in more drinkers.
That said, it’s a private organization and they can choose however they want. This whole thing would be solved if they said, “The teams are chosen based on a combination of the team records and other financial considerations.” People might not like it, but, private groups can do what they want.
JadeNYU on March 27, 2009 at 2:15 PM
I like the BCS and hate any mention of a “playoff” system.
You want playoffs, watch the NFL. They have a great one.
Bear Bryant once said, “we have a playoff system, it’s called the regular season”.
That’s right. It’s the only sport where fifth place teams who crapped up the regular season, get booted from the playoffs.
Give me more games on campus any day of the week, and don’t give me more neutral site games in Miami, with suits attending. More emphasis on conference championships and less on bowls.
No playoffs, ever.

Who can forget how this singularly incompetent dolt after getting the goods on Rockefeller and the Democrats planning the subversion of American intelligence for their political advantage allowed his own Committee’s investigation to be refocused on how the Republican staffers stumbled on the Democrat treason; totally dropping pursuit of the guilty Senators?
