Video: If government doesn’t work, why expand it?
posted at 11:38 am on March 26, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Yesterday, Congress looked into reports that bureaucrats at the Department of Labor showed little enthusiasm for investigating complaints of “wage theft” and unfair labor practices. Independent investigators found that calling the complaint line usually resulted in no action at all, as workers at the agency openly complained about a lack of resources and advised callers to just find another job. The GAO issued a stern report about the failure of the DoL to act on behalf of workers, and Gregory Kutz, Managing Director of GAO’s special investigations unit, testified before Congress to the issue.
This gave Rep. Tom Price, the chair of the Republican Study Committee, an opportunity to point out the basic problems in expanding government power. Watch this colloquy and enjoy Kutz’ obvious discomfort:
Try to imagine, in a government-run health care system, calling to complain about a lack of treatment. What would be the answer — “find another country”? “You’ve lived long enough”? “I’ll bet you’re a hypochondriac”? “Can’t I just eat my waffle?”
The GAO should investigate when government agencies fail to do their jobs and when laws do not get enforced. But we should also remember that bureaucracies serve themselves first above all things, and that placing less power in their hands benefits us more in the long run. At the very least, maybe we should concentrate on fixing what isn’t working before expanding bureaucracies exponentially.

Excellent post Ed. This thread and video should be required viewing for all citizens over the age of 18. Then we can break out into study groups.
It is unbelieavble to me that this is the direction health care enthusiasts want to take our great country. In many cases to accommodate illegal immigrants and non-productive citizens instead of giving them a real hand up in our society.
Priceless and scarily too real. I yield the remainder of my time to the master, Mr. Morrissey.

Ed, man, you just don’t get it. Look at public education. When it fails, what does it need? More resources! So the only answer ro government failure is more government. Get with the [Serve America Act] program!

Ummm… now I know we have decended into the dark recesses of the internet. Please do not click the link below, unless you want to know what motorboatin is.

Google has hurt our society far beyond anything Obama could do.

The most infuriating part about all this is our medicine is already “socialized”, and that is why it is so expensive.
No one in this country is denied health care – rich, poor, legal, illegal, free, incarcerated, sick or just bored. They are all treated by the state. Go to any county hospital’s ER – there they are, every kind of person with every type of complaint imaginable. They get treatment – the best treatment in the world and then they get billed. If they can’t or won’t pay the cost is absorbed into the county budget – that is taxpayer funded health care.
Larger cities provide free or nearly free community health centers, dental centers, school clinics, homeless shelter clinics and mobile health clinics. The clinics do primary care and a myriad of specialties.
The only thing that will happen when all health care is administered by the government is punishment of the quality/quantity of health care for those that can pay.
And of course some folks in the health care field will go Galt.

not punishment – diminished quality.
but it will feel like punishment

Beautifully illustrated, Mr. Price!!

To bad the phrase “you’re fired” is seldom heard in government offices.
