Glenn Beck to Michelle: Are you worried about Obama’s mandatory volunteerism plan?

If ever there was a segment with potential for GB to veer off into Alex Jones territory, this was it, but it ended up both (relatively) subdued and informative thanks to a sterling turn by the boss. Read her column yesterday on this if you haven’t yet. The real worry here isn’t mandatory volunteerism (oxymoron duly noted), as that provision’s been stripped out of the bill — for now — but an ever-bloating federal bureaucracy and the politicization of civic groups to partisan ends. Consider this the ultimate “What if Bush did it?” hypothetical. Exit question for lawyers and law professors: Is compulsory national service constitutional, at least during peacetime? No privacy implications in being conscripted to serve the state absent a national emergency?
Update: You’ll be cheered to know that the Senate version of the GIVE Act passed this afternoon, 79-19. Here’s the roll. Among those voting yes was our former Republican nominee.

What “able young people” are they speaking of? Kids today cannot do much except text one another on their celly’s. It takes an incredible amount of effort and supervision just to get a group of them to pick up trash at a park. I cannot see the benefit of inefficient make-work.
The city where I live boasts 50% graduation rates. I think putting more expectations on students will drive graduation rates lower.

Right now, the focus should be on just that, the ever growing government with the help of Republicans. But the provision was there originally and it was Alex Jones who brought it to our attention, so all Kudos to him because it probably helped get it stripped out. I’m sure Allah meant to credit him.
It’s funny, Alex Jones continues to be correct and all conservatives do is ridicule him. Dude’s been spot on, I have officially become a big fan. “No matter how many and great the obstacles put in his way by human frailty and sin, the Spirit, who renews the face of the earth, makes possible the miracle of the perfect accomplishment of the good. This renewal, which gives the ability to do what is good, noble, beautiful, pleasing to God and in conformity with his will, is in some way the flowering of the gift of mercy, which offers liberation from the slavery of evil and gives the strength to sin no more”.

If Republicans are going to rescue this country from the jaws of tyranny we must clearly distinguish ourselves from the Dems. There must be a line in the sand. Rule #1: Don’t squander $6 billion dollars of our money on programs which are not essential. And that’s the nicest thing I can say about this legislation.
To put that number in perspective, the Department of Education has a budget of $68 billion a year. This is nearly 10% of that number.

Obama is going to lose a lot of his supporters over this especially among the youth. They don’t like to work for money let alone for free. They can volunteer all they want now, as Demint pointed, out if they want to and those that do are generally religious conservatives.
I will making sure my niece doesn’t fall for any of this nonsense by explaining she can do more through the Church than she can through the government.
That said I don’t really have a problem with Americorp as they do good work, my main problem comes with the money getting spent in the bureaucracy and not in any worthwhile projects.
From what I understand they won’t be able to engage in political or religious work so what will they be doing? I would guess picking up trash, rebuilding trails in parks, staffing food banks and such, not easy or glamorous work so the youth won’t like it. This will be just another crash and burn program that will persist for years with all the money going to those that run it but don’t do anything with it.

They’re thinking that volunteering is good. They’re thinking that young people today need to do more, and learn to serve others. They’re thinking it would be a good thing for young people to serve their country for a while. And, of course, the really objectionable part about making it mandatory was stripped from the bill they voted on.
All too often, people vote for what sounds good without thinking through all the consequences.
That said, “thinking through the consequences” should be part of the job description for Congress.

In 1923, the Hitler-Jugend (Hitler Youth) had a little over one thousand members. In 1925 the membership grew to over 5,000. At the end of 1932 it was at 107,956. By the end of 1933, it had grown to 2,300,000 members. Much of these increases came from the merger of other youth organizations with the HJ. (The boy scout movement was banned, then the sizable Evangelische Jugend, a Lutheran youth organisation of 600,000 members, was “integrated” on February 18, 1934).
By December 1936, HJ membership stood at just over five million. That same month, HJ membership became mandatory, under the Gesetz über die Hitlerjugend law. This legal obligation was re-affirmed in 1939 with the Jugenddienstpflicht, now HJ membership was required even when it was opposed by the member’s parents. From then on, most of Germany’s teenagers belonged to the HJ. By 1940, it had eight million members.

The Obama regime is working on a complete socialist takeover of America, way beyond the “social democrat” systems in Europe – like in the Netherlands where I’m from.
Obama’s new state looks more like Italy under Mussolini or Venezuela under Chavez. Note he’s only three months into this!
Republicans and conservatives seem clueless. They think Obama is like Clinton or Carter. They think it’s all about taxes and pork. There are much more fundamental things at stake.

You forget that the Constitution doesn’t mean what it says or what the people who wrote it said it means it means what Obama and 9 black robed monarchs SAY it means.
Why the 13th Amendment was REALLY about abortion you know, about the right of women not to be enslaved by the “massah” in her womb. It wasn’t about your children’s right to not have to serve in an Obama
indoctrination camp“community organization”.Up next: The 22nd Amendment only means that George W Bush can’t run for a third term, not awesomely awesome Obamessiahs, especially in this atmosphere of perpetual crisis. There’s like a crisis or something man!
wildcat84 on March 27, 2009 at 9:08 AM
At this point they are pushing so far, so fast that I am actually beginning to believe that revolution is inevitable.
They are trying their damnedest to transform us into a proto-communist state as FAST as possible, exploiting a crisis atmosphere, before the next elections.
At the rate they are going, I’m beginning to have some doubts as to whether we will GET a vote in 2010 and 2012. Or even if we do if it will MATTER, considering how Obama is integrating his vote fraud ACORN arm into the census and the voting process.
Remember it doesn’t matter what the voters vote for it matters who gets to count them. And with many states having Soros/ACORN hand picked secretaries of state (such as the odious Jennifer Bruner in Ohio) and as we are seeing in Minnesota, what we vote for on election day doesn’t matter.
They couldn’t get away with banning the Republican or other parties or taking away the right to vote outright. But they are trying to get away with institutionalizing democrat vote fraud and election rigging. Note that vote fraud always seems to go only one way…
