Video: The obligatory “conservative MEP eviscerates Gordon Brown” clip; Update: Too soon to judge Obama, says MEP

posted at 3:55 pm on March 25, 2009 by Allahpundit

In which a tough couple of days for Keynesians in the European Parliament suddenly turns bloody. If you didn’t follow Drudge’s link and watch this earlier, watch it now. Same effect as seeing a boxer trap his opponent in the corner and connect with a flurry of power punches: Is it the poetry or the sheer brutality that makes it so impressive? Or is it the contrast with Boehner and Mitch McConnell lumbering around the ring, day after day?

Here’s his YouTube page, chock full of more in this vein, and here’s his blog, in which he marvels at the ability of the ‘Net to turn a backbench parliamentarian into an international fiscal conservative hero overnight. Exit question: We’re all agreed that Hannan gets to deliver the GOP’s response to next year’s State of the Union, yes?

Update: Eh, not quite the conservative dreamboat we hoped he’d be: He’s anti-stimulus but willing to give The One a few more months before pronouncing judgment.

Well, I won’t deny that Obama has done plenty of irritating things, ranging from the idiotic stimulus package to the way he dissed the Prime Minister (yes, I know the man’s a clot, Mr President, but he’s our clot; and, tired as you may have been, I suspect the Royal Marines in their Forward Operating Bases in Helmand, fighting a war that few of your allies will touch, are pretty drowsy too).

On the other hand, the US remains more popular than it has been for years, and Obama’s own approval ratings, though fallen, are well above the vote he received in November.

The only fair answer I can give is that it’s too early to say.

Blowback

If you get BBC on cable some time take a minute to watch the Questions to the Prime Minister.

This description is from Wiki:

Opposition questions are usually highly critical of government policy, with the response from the PM also usually equally caustic in response forming a highly combative, confrontational debate between the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition. Remarks, questions and responses from both leaders are often jeered or cheered loudly by their respective party backbenchers.

The Brits know how to speak.

Oink on March 25, 2009 at 4:07 PM

I can forgive Hannan for still being dazzled by Obama – he’s concentrating on the soundness of the U.K. Heck, maybe he’s happy that the US is taking a backward step, as it’ll give the U.K. room to move up.

When? When we a)impose term limits or b)reassert state and individual rights.

I propose that conservatives nominate a slate of candidates committed to serving 1 term, and who would run on a platform of:
passing term limits for all elected offices.
passing the line-item veto
rolling back welfare programs
lowering taxes
cleaning up our medicare and social security issues.
simplifying the tax code
requiring year-to-year renewal for the legal justification for all non-defense Federal programs.

Call it the “Save our Future” campaign, or the “Jubilee Party”.

Hannan is a ton better than the Tories’ current choice for PM, David Cameron, who basically is a CINO (Conservative-in-Name-Only).

For those of you who don’t follow the European Parliament (who does?); Hannan was kicked out of the “centre-right” caucus for being too Euro sceptic.

Exit question: We’re all agreed that Hannan gets to deliver the GOP’s response to next year’s State of the Union, yes?

No, not based on the interview I just heard him do with Cavuto. He seems to have his information about the Republican vs Democrat platforms in the ’08 election from CNN.

He was an Obama supporter.. because Bush had lost his way? Did he not know Bush wasn’t on the ballot?

He supported Obama because it was good for the world that American elected a mixed race anti-Iraq war President? So the world would like us again?

Oh and he didn’t support the GOP candidate because Bush denied States’ Rights on the gay marriage issue.

See it’s a dangerous thing to equate what is called conservative in the UK with what is conservative in the USA.

Exit question: We’re all agreed that Hannan gets to deliver the GOP’s response to next year’s State of the Union, yes?

No. Don’t assume one good response and a generally good record for an MEP equals American Conservatism. There are several British MPs I would much rather have deliver the response: William Cash (MP-Stone) or John Redwood (MP-Wokingham). These two men are true conservatives in the Sarah Palin/Ronald Reagan mold.

Hannan, while generally good on budget/EU issues, is more of a squishy leftist when it comes to foreign policy, the environment, death penalty and numerous other issues.

Norwegian on March 25, 2009 at 4:40 PM

This could happen here too. Art II Sec 3 states in part: “He shall from time to time give to the Congress information of the state of the union, and recommend to their consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient;…”

Congress could make it happen by defining the phrase from time to time as monthly and the phrase recommend to their consideration as a verbal argument only. TOTUS not allowed.

Now who in congress would vote against this? This camera time would be priceless. Would BHO dare veto this law? I think not.

True.

And neither will national security issues, thus the reason the GOP has a three legged stool approach.

But in this instance I’m not aware of any one on the GOP side of the Iraq War that was against it even after things looked bleak because they were worried about what the rest of the world thought about the USA. I find it comical that a UK MP would, as it seems, be so concerned about that world view of America.

I think maybe he was like some of those former Republican and Independent voters and bought into Obama as a centrist. I’d describe him more closer to a Blue Dog Democrat.
