Video: Are you ready for President Steele?

posted at 8:05 pm on March 25, 2009 by Allahpundit

Don’t laugh. Come 2016, that Democratic field’s going to be wide open.

No, I kid. But I would like to know how a guy who’s now even more suspect on abortion than Mitt Romney plans to rally the Republican base to his side in a primary. His answer, presumably: The base didn’t prevent Maverick! from being nominated last year, did it? In which case, touche. Exit question: Never mind his presidential ambitions. Does he seriously expect us to believe his bumbling answer on D.L. Hughley about Limbaugh’s show being “ugly” was a deliberate, strategic provocation? Come on, buddy. Lie to me if you must, but don’t insult me. Click the image to watch.

You have to admit, ‘President Steele’ would be almost as cool as ‘President Wood’. Well, just saying the name anyway…

austinnelly on March 25, 2009 at 8:09 PM

I’m very introspective about things. I’m a cause-and-effect kind of guy. So if I do something, there’s a reason for it…

It may look like a mistake, a gaffe. There is a rationale, there is a logic behind it,” he said. “I want to see what the landscape looks like. I want to see who yells the loudest. I want to know who says they’re with me but really isn’t.”
“It helps me understand my position on the chess board. It helps me understand, where, you know, the enemy camp is and where those who are inside the tent are,” Steele added. “It’s all strategic.”

Strategery.

getalife on March 25, 2009 at 8:12 PM

Let’s see how he does as RNC chair. I’m not really impressed with him so far. In fact, the exact opposite. But I’m willing to give him a little while longer.

scrubbiedude on March 25, 2009 at 8:14 PM

The “grand strategery” theory makes him sound even more silly than just about anything else I have heard him say or read that he said.

myrenovations on March 25, 2009 at 8:14 PM

Put him in the WH now then we could still say our President is a black guy but not an empty suite.

lavell12 on March 25, 2009 at 8:14 PM

I won’t vote for him.

amerpundit on March 25, 2009 at 8:15 PM

Steele can be GOP head. What America needs is a conservative party. In Canada, we had something called the Progressive Conservatives, who, for decades, were anything but conservative – as the first part of the name implies. Then another party formed in its collapse called simply the “conservative party”. That party is now in power.

America should take note.

He’s taking plays from O’s book in order to give the GOP the true leader they deserve…

Don’t be so sure. The Democratic field could be wide open in 2012. Obama is doing such a great job only a few months into office. Don’t be surprised if he becomes the second sitting president not to get his party’s nomination.

You must be a troll.

Mulroney did to the PC party what Bush/Cheney have done to the GOP.

The party infighting lead to a socon/fiscal con split along ideological and regional lines.

It wasn’t until the socons realized their extremist policy positions would keep the party split and out of power did the parties unite to form a MODERATE governing party.

A moderate conservative party much more sympathetic to socon concerns than the Liberal majorities ever had been or will be.

The GOP would do well to study the Canadian conservative movement.

right now we are at the darkest hour with socons actually believing they will get power without moderating their extremism.

If most everyone adopts socially liberal positions they will eventually (actually quite rapidly) adopt liberal positions on fiscal matters and foreign policy issues also.

Maragaret Thatcher ignored issues like family and education, culture and morality, for the ten years she was in office and the fruit born of those years is David Cameron who is a liberal squish on every issue.

aengus on March 25, 2009 at 10:19 PM

I don’t think Steele will be president. Really I don’t. But I think people have deliberately miscontrued his stand on abortion. He is prolife and always has been. The fact that he accepts the reality that some abortions are legal in the United States, does not mean he likes the idea.

It seems to me that we have enough real problems to deal with, without going out of our way to create more.

Terrye on March 25, 2009 at 10:33 PM

aengus:

I don’t think that is true. I know some libertarians who think the state should stay out of a lot of social issues entirely, but they are very conservative when it comes to federal spending.

Terrye on March 25, 2009 at 10:35 PM

Please vote for my dog, he’s a Border Collie cross so he has plenty of energy and he really needs a job. He could get a lot of use out of the new swingset at the White House, and his name is Sam (a good patriot name)

Has anyone noticed that both Obama and Steele are having problems staffing their cabinets?? I have to say that I am not real impressed with Steele so far, but maybe he just needs to grow into the job.

kringeesmom on March 25, 2009 at 10:37 PM

If abortion is what half the Republican party is going to be worked up about right now then the party is screwed, sorry….

I hate abortion, but if thats your test for candidates in the primaries then good luck in the general election where the economy and foreign policy are going to be the biggest issues for the next 50 years no matter what. The average american who just shows up and votes every four years could care less about how Michael Steele feels about abortion. And I could care less too if he’s going to help us get people elected

As for rallying the base, hopefully Steele will change the base of the GOP and take advantage of the anti government feelings out there right now and bring us to the economically libertarian base of Reagan and Goldwater.

You realize this term is just as rude as those who called Steele an “Oreo?” Many people in my family are of mixed-race and/or ethnicity. I don’t appreciate your use of this term.

Do not mistake my admonition for a call to silence you. I prefer your honesty. Equally, I reserve the right to point out your racial button-pushing.

Perhaps you don’t care whom you offend. Maybe you just snub me, and tell me to kick rocks. That’s cool. Something that you and I both know is that you would not dare speak this way in public. That’s probably why you felt the need to regurgitate that crap here online.

I know you are so weak that spouting off online is all you can do. I excuse your weakness and pity your meekness.

I like Steele, but I don’t think he’s presidential material. Cabinet material…definitely!

I don’t think that is true. I know some libertarians who think the state should stay out of a lot of social issues entirely, but they are very conservative when it comes to federal spending.

I don’t doubt it. But I’m thinking more of cultural attitudes than policy positions. I am religious but I think very little of “faith-based initiatives” which are a pointless waste a money.

If staying out of social issues entirely means not just refusing to fund them (which is sensible) but showing complete indiffernce to them on a moral and cultural level then that will contribute to societal decay in the long run, the latter stage of which is all-out liberalism.
