Video: ABC tries to create homophobic scene at sports bar, fails epically

posted at 4:55 pm on March 25, 2009 by Allahpundit

Via Breitbart, the latest episode in an endless series of media stunts involving minorities plopped down in unlikely surroundings — Muslims at a NASCAR event, gays at a sports bar — in order to demonstrate the horrible intolerance of mainstream American culture. It almost never works, but darned if they don’t keep trying. Credit ABC for going the extra mile here, arranging not only for the gay couple to act as bait but actually hiring an actor to heckle them in hopes of goading the other patrons to join in. Like I said last time we covered something in this vein, there is indeed plenty of prejudice at work here. It’s just that it’s on the other side of the camera.

The bull dike was hatin’ on me because I am straight and happily married.

LOL

Maybe she just didn’t like being referred to as a “bull dike.”

lady at bar to guy: Bull, dyke.

I cringed when they had the two gay guys “amp up the affection level” because I feared they would reach the point at which their behavior is considered unacceptable for both straight couples and gay couples in public. And then the newsies would have referred to the “reaction” to that public soft core porn as “homophobic”.

Bingo. I’m uncomfortable with overt PDA by anyone and everyone. Would that have made me a bigot according to these tools?

But enough about the Red Eye afterparty!

Jim Treacher on March 25, 2009 at 6:33 PM

There’s this guy I used to work with in San Francisco. When he first met me and found out I was from flyover country, he assumed that I would be all prejudice-y towards him since he was gay. When I moved jobs, he said that I changed the way he looked at people from flyover because I treated him the exact same way that I treated everyone else.

Wow, it’s almost like he pre-judged you before he knew anything about you. Weird, huh?

Jim Treacher on March 25, 2009 at 6:38 PM

i’d need a complete lobotomy before i would go into ANY sports bar where heterosexual people go to relax and unwind and pull that kind of crap. there are things called GAY BARS.

The Ugly American on March 25, 2009 at 6:48 PM

HOw desperate when at the end the “gal” says that people have to act intolerant, even when they aren’t.
They tried it a NASCAR and it didn’t work…they have always tried to show people in an uncontrollable state when planes are “going down”, but time and time again in real situations very few panic…and then they try this.
Hey, here’s some news for these idiots…the vast majority, the huge majority, are civil, caring, loving people.
The liberals who put these scenarios together are the losers, they wish they were better…but they prove that the ordinary, everyday citizen is better then they will ever be.

Gay friend came to visit us from California (I’m in NC), he was shocked when he saw how large the gay community was…he just couldn’t believe that “Southerners” would accept the lifestyle…like many, his need to be a victim, was greater then his need to open his eyes….basically people don’t care.

That place is right down the street from my house. It looks like a nice place. I would stop in, except they have been cooperating with the jerks at ABC to run sting operations against us “normals”.

The only people I dislike in that whole episode are the folks at ABC.

gridlock2 on March 25, 2009 at 6:56 PM

ABC isn’t just showing predjudice towards flyover country, they’re also acting as if two gay guys in a sports bar = two guys making out in a sports bar and being kind of stupid and bitchy. And then we wonder why kids use “gay” to mean “stupid.” So often. Why not do a news story on issues that actually effect gays and lesbians like the ceiling often placed on unmarried people in corporate America. Or the gay teen suicide/homeless rate. THATS actually important, this stuff. Well it is the media I guess we can only expect this kind of incompetence.

They used to call it PDA (public displays of affection)
I’m talking straight here,, growing up, nobody did that in public. Holding hands, sure, a kiss, sure, but groping each other and hanging onto each other, nobody did that.
Lesson, they needed some agitators to stir things up. I thought they had a term for that,, entrapment.
Be interesting if the tables were turned, what would happen in a gay bar and a conservative looking straight couple came in and just drank coffee or wine, talked conservative politics while displaying one of Rush’s books, or the Bible. Wonder what would be caught on tape?

Close friend of mine is a 40ish lesbian from Tennessee – cute as a button, very wholesome gym-teacher type, a good ol gal.

She and her partner (also a lovely person) used to live in St. Louis, where the annual Gay Pride Parade was family friendly and attracted a wide swath of people.

Then they got here, to Houston, where it’s a lot of leather and butts hanging out and drag queens etc – mostly the guys making it very in-your-face sexual. And she gets so pissed off. “Well, good Lord people, no wonder folks get all freaked out by the homos! running around with their asses hanging out in the open! It’s tacky and stupid!” etc. etc. Very funny hear her, and she’s right, of course.

stubbylibrarian on March 25, 2009 at 7:43 PM

I lived in the SF Bay area for a while; the Liberals would believe ANYTHING about flyover country (the South especially); I put them on a few times to see just how gullible some of them were. The levels of intolerance would be entirely unacceptable in the South.
Most major cities have gay and lesbian communities; try looking up “the Lesbian Denny’s” in Phoenix for example.

“Tolerance has become an American value.” The word of the month in my school district is Tolerance. As has been noted in many other articles and fora, it only works one way, toward deviant lifestyle, terrorists, etc. Never towards Christians, especially the evangelical variety.

I’m just surprised they didn’t up the ante even further and have the gay couple proceed to drown two kittens in their pints of imported ale. That, surely, would have revealed to all the latent homophobia of Americans in sports bars. ABCNews wussed out.

I thought the guy who played the agitator wasn’t very convincing. He should have cracked some jokes about fudge packing or something. Making fun and cracking wise instead of expressing hate might have gotten them the reaction ABC were seeking. But that might have turned the tables on them by having the entire bar laughing at the gays instead of hating them. Nothing makes a wannabe victim more upset than to be laughed at and not taken seriously.

Dollayo on March 25, 2009 at 8:52 PM

Hey ABC… how about I wear my “Sportsmen for McCain” t-shirt (I got while working on his campaign) while walking around parts of NYC? I guarantee you will get comments.

I was in a story dateline NBC did a couple years ago. My company did some work for them, but everyone who worked on that project was out when the camera people came by. Since I was still in the office they asked me to sit at someone else’s desk and pretend to work so they could film me. Joking around, I said to the camera man something like “oh, so we’re going to fake this?” and he answered “This is Dateline, everything’s fake.”

Nice to know you’re trawling youtube looking for videos of gays dancing?

Reaps on March 25, 2009 at 9:32 PM

I consulted at a good-sized company once, in a professional office environment, in a standard cubicle setting. A female cube neighbor kept taking breaks with me asking probing questions about my feelings toward lesbians. I kept dodging the questions, until finally I told her that I don’t care what people do in the privacy of their own homes, it is inappropriate to discuss in the workplace.

She immediately went to her manager to complain about sexual intolerance toward her overt lesbianism! I proclaimed my neutrality on the subject, but to her, that was the same as an attack!

What exactly is wrong with these people?!?

I’m gay but Jesus Christ.. what were they going to do next , have them give each other blow jobs in the bar to see what the people would do?

VinceP1974 on March 25, 2009 at 10:39 PM

I really don’t like this show at all.

I think Quinones is terribly unfair a lot of the time.

I’ve seen a couple segments of this show, and from a lot of the footage I’ve seen, it looks like the innocent bystanders don’t even know what is going on half the time. They are often out of earshot of the “offensive” material. They might catch a phrase here or there. But how are they supposed to know what’s really going on?

I also think it’s sad to dedicate a show that sets out to purposefully make people look bad. (Also … is it just me, or does Quinones almost always go into “white” areas to make people look bad?)

Quinones think he’s doing something noble with his show. But me, I think he’s acting like a self-righteous jerk.

All I learned is that gay people are quite bigoted heterophobes. And NBC, which hit bottom some time ago, continues to dig.

I should clarify that. Gay people as portrayed by the MSM, (who actually are bigoted heterophobes.)

Stella451 on March 26, 2009 at 7:59 AM

ABC isn’t just showing predjudice towards flyover country

The funny thing is that this bar is in Garwood, New Jersey, which is the fourth stop out from Penn Station, New York, on the Raritan Valley Line. The bar is about 150 feet from the train platform.

This is probably about as far out in the country as Quinones has ever been. He probably expected to see cows running around loose on the streets.

gridlock2 on March 26, 2009 at 8:05 AM

Ummm, I’m sorry but it doesn’t make you an evil person to cringe at seeing two people of the same sex make out. Since homosexuality is clearly not the norm of human behavior (it’s just not- the human body is not built for gay sex, and the species itself clearly has defined gender roles in the sense that a man is built to be with a woman). It makes sense for most humans to have a visceral negative reaction to seeing that sort of thing.

That’s not homophobia (which is a word the gay lobby has hijacked to mean “you disagree with us,” when it actually means an irrational fear of homosexuality), it’s simply basic human nature.

TheBlueSite on March 26, 2009 at 9:04 AM

By the way- if you think it’s evil to find two men kissing disgusting…go all the way. Watch these two guys have sex. If you even dare cringe or close your eyes as it goes in, you’re a homophobe and not suitable for civilized society. The logic only follows that making out kissing is a precursor to (cough) other activities.

I always ask people who make a fuss like this- why is it evil for me not to want to see 2 guys or girls kiss each other, yet it’s okay for you to cringe when they go all the way? Why isn’t the full display of their love just as beautiful as the kissing?

I do agree that I wouldn’t want to see hetero or homosexual couples make out in public- it’s not the time or place.

TheBlueSite on March 26, 2009 at 9:20 AM

Another attempt to ATTACK MIDDLE AMERICA by the left. It’s more disgusting than watching those two guys kiss. When did it become so popular to attack Americans and attempt to call out America as evil? I for one am sick of the left in this country and hope we make a huge change in the next elections!!!

afotia on March 26, 2009 at 9:57 AM

“Defining deviancy down”… a quote by a liberal democrat… Daniel Patrick Moynihan. Nothing “moral” or “emotional” about it… it’s statistical. It is deviant behavior… deviates from the norm quite a bit.

CapedConservative on March 26, 2009 at 10:04 AM

I thought this video shone a good light on Americans. After all, how often are we portrayed as homophobic, gun-totin’ rednecks in the media around the world? This showed that there is good social support for gays…at least in this sample….and in my experiences, this is typical, even understated – around here, that antagonist guy would have been dragged outside and kicked hard.

Gays acting out like raging queens – that’s as socially frowned upon as straight couples shoving tongues down each others’ throats in public – but gays acting as affectionately as any other couple? Not even a raised eyebrow.

LimeyGeek on March 26, 2009 at 10:16 AM

Great, now my favorite sports bar is gonna be lousy with over sexed gays. Thanks, ABC.

mugged on March 26, 2009 at 10:36 AM

Maybe ABC would have had better luck by making a video monitoring this website?

LimeyGeek on March 26, 2009 at 10:38 AM

Allah, you want some good footage? Wear a conservative T-shirt as you stroll around Manhattan, say, near the park or any Starbucks. For an encore, go to Park Slope and the friendly, tolerant, love-filled Village, that’ll be fun too.
Watch the two-minutes hate begin.

I get all kinds of remarks when I wear my “Member Vast Right Wing Conspiracy” shirt in northern VA (I got bothered at a freaking Denny’s), a friend loves to wear his “Liberalism breeds Terrorism” around Old Town Alexandria (Jim Moran, representing) and listen to the comments and what-not.

If you really want some good hate, have a black man do it. Or even better, have a black woman do it.
Heck, try to talk Michele into it. I don’t know how recognizable she is to your average lefty so they might not know it’s her.

Veeshir on March 26, 2009 at 10:38 AM

Not that I’m illogical enough to believe in gays to begin with, but wouldn’t most gays out there be disturbed at the flamboyance of these two Mary’s? Not to mention the obnoxious PDA.

BTW, although it is disgusting and unnatural, and anyone with an ounce of common sense recognizes this, even if they deny it, wouldn’t most of us react negatively to a man and woman behaving this way as well? I know I have. I’ve been in many a bar and seen a couple of drunk and/or redneck couples making out all over the place to the disgust of virtually everyone else in the place.

At any rate, I may have to “tolerate” these people, but I DO NOT have to accept this behavior. The day 1 gay gets another pregnant, or someone finds a gay gene, I’ll rethink things. Until then, I have a touch time believing that it’s just a coincidence that there are 2 genders with unique reproductive organs specially designed (or evolved, if you must) to operate together.
