Video: NRSC ad targets Obama on hypocrisy

The National Republican Senatorial Committee has a new web out titled “Change You Can Believe In?”  Instead of aiming at the Senate, though, they’ve decided to aim higher — at the White House.  The ad reviews Obama’s promises as a candidate and compares them to his actions in his first 63 days as President.  Needless to say, the comparison doesn’t make Obama look good:

Hmmm.  It’s a good ad, web-only at 95 seconds, but should the NRSC target Obama rather than Harry Reid?  They certainly could do both, and since this is a web-only ad, the opportunity cost is non-existent — in other words, the NRSC isn’t wasting much time or money on it.  Barack Obama is the Democratic Party leader, both nominally and popularly, so any dent in his standing helps the Republicans in Senate races, at least indirectly.  However, it seems to me that Chris Dodd and Harry Reid, both up for election in 2010, make better and more direct targets.

Also, the small part about AIG bonuses feels like the wrong direction for Republicans to go.  That’s playing on Democratic turf.  What do you think?

Transcript follows:

TEXT: “IS HE KEEPING HIS PROMISES?”

TEXT: “CANDIDATE OBAMA”

SENATOR OBAMA: “From the moment I take office, my top priority will be to do everything I can to make sure your tax dollars are protected.”

TEXT: “MAKE SURE YOUR TAX DOLLARS ARE PROTECTED”

TEXT: “PRESIDENT OBAMA”

NBC’S BRIAN WILLIAMS: “So you can understand the outrage when word first broke that AIG was paying out some big bonuses to some of their employees.”

TEXT: “CANDIDATE OBAMA”

SENATOR OBAMA: “I want to use a scalpel, so that people who need help are getting help.”

“Absolutely we need earmark reform, and when I’m president, I will go line by line to make sure that we are not spending money unwisely.”

TEXT: “I WILL GO LINE BY LINE”

TEXT: “PRESIDENT OBAMA”

CBS’S CHIP REID: “…as he signed a bill stuffed with pork barrel spending. Behind closed doors it was critics say, business as usual. 1100 pages loaded with about 8500 pet projects known as earmarks.”

TEXT: “CANDIDATE OBAMA”

SENATOR OBAMA: “The key is making sure that the next Treasury Secretary understands that it’s not enough just to help those at the top.”

TEXT: “IT’S NOT ENOUGH JUST TO HELP THOSE AT THE TOP”

TEXT: “PRESIDENT OBAMA”

MSNBC’S KEITH OLBERMANN: “It’s clear he knew and approved of bonuses that the White House now thoroughly condemns.”

PRESIDENT OBAMA: “I have complete confidence in Tim Geithner.”

TEXT: “CANDIDATE OBAMA”

SENATOR OBAMA: “It’s time to return to fiscal responsibility and pay-as-you-go budgeting.”

TEXT: “PAY-AS-YOU-GO BUDGETING”

TEXT: “PRESIDENT OBAMA”

ABC NEWS: “The president’s budget will leave a whopping $9.3 trillion deficit, far larger than administration estimates.”

TEXT: “IF SEEING IS BELIEVING… IS THIS CHANGE YOU CAN BELIEVE IN?”

PBS’S GWEN IFILL: “He fell well short of some of the things he said during the campaign.”

As for targeting Reid, according to Gallup, the most popular response among Americans sampled for their recent Obama approval polls: “Harry Reid? Wasn’t he like a pornstar who got AIDS or something?”

CK MacLeod on March 24, 2009 at 1:43 PM

Notice, this was the senate repubs. That deafening silence you hear is the republican national committee which should have done this particular piece. Not one thin dime to the RNC until we see them do something, anything, constructive and that bolsters conservative principles.

Old Country Boy on March 24, 2009 at 1:43 PM

Conservatives already know that Obama is a Socialist stooge and fraud. The Democrats [also Socialist stooges and frauds] do, too. And the Undecideds simply don’t give a damn, and never will.

Nothing will change. America is going down the memory hole.

OhEssYouCowboys on March 24, 2009 at 1:44 PM

Awesomely awesome.

Make the charges stick first, then make the Senators up for reelection defend them.

Good comparison, but have to agree on the AIG bit, they should have pointed out that he and his party put those bonuses back in the bill he then signed, instead of harping once again on the populist angle.

Unfortunately, it appears the RNC would rather tell a strong conservative like Dick Cheney to get lost, than launch a truth campaign against Obama. I think the Beltway Elitists that make up the RNC truly want to remake the GOP into Democrat-Lite.

Very good ad. It needs to be shortened to 60 seconds and run before and after one of Obama’s free infomercials known as a “press conference.”

You have to understand, honesty and integrity and keeping your word only applies to Republicans. Democrats are not to be held to such a high standard because they represent the part of our society that has been dumbed down by the Left’s assault on morals and intelligence. Before you know it, all the people should be there if everything goes according to their plan. It’s kind of like a futuristic society in an apocalyptic Sci-Fi movie, or something.

Nice little fun one-day ad for the Senate Republican staffers to concoct, though I wonder if the idea isn’t so much to attack Obama as to make Keith Olbermann’s head explode by using his sound bite in the add to help pile on the charges against Barack.

Harry Reid is Mormon. Ask him if he supports the Mormon Church’s stand on Prop 8 in California (his neighboring state – so it is relevant). If he says he supports and agrees with the Mormon Church – then he loses a lot of libs. And if he says he disagrees with the Mormon Church then he loses a lot of Mormons who vote for him because he is mormon. There is a very large Mormon population in Las Vegas, and losing their vote would be big.

tarpon on March 24, 2009 at 1:55 PM

+1

This is a good little ad, and it’s useful to hammer the “all Obama statements come with expiration dates” line, particularly since it’s a line of attack likely to rattle him personally – he always looks surprised when his own words are thrown back at him. I think he expected the MSM to handle this stuff for him. Narcissists and egomaniacs love to talk about themselves, but they rarely do well on pop quizzes about their favorite subject.

Having said that, a positive agenda and display of leadership are what the GOP needs to put in front of the public. To a certain extent, the bad track record of politicians as a class immunizes them from charges of hypocrisy – it’s like criticizing a raccoon for rooting around in your garbage. It’s what they do. The GOP should also remember that they couldn’t make aggressive criticism of an impeached felon stick in the late 90s, even after the media had begun falling out of love with him and nursing feelings of betrayal. They won’t have much success getting a love-struck media to report critically on what Obama’s doing wrong, and even less success getting them to report what he should be doing, but they can compel coverage of their own ideas and let the public decide.

Doctor Zero on March 24, 2009 at 2:09 PM

whitetop on March 24, 2009 at 2:09 PM

Great ad. Now we need another one that focuses on some of his other promises:

Fix America’s damaged reputation with our allies by:
-snubbing the British Prime Minister with lame gifts
-snubbing NATO on the Supreme Commander appointment
-cozying up with Iran

Ending partisanship and being the first “post-partisan” President by:
-ramming through a stimulus bill with no Republican support to speak of.
-pandering to Pelosi and Reid, the two most parisan congressional leaders in recent memory
-attacking Rush Limbaugh (not even in any government possition)in highly partisan tirades

roxer on March 24, 2009 at 2:13 PM

Well, at least the earth is healing and the oceans are receding…

I wish that the NRSC would stop pandering wrt to the bonuses and leave the populism to Punchy. AIG was liquidating a division and promised a retention bonus to those who stuck around despite the fact that they were facing certain job losses. The bonuses cost millions but saved the company billions… we should say thanks because we, the taxpayers, own 80% of AIG.

Laurence on March 24, 2009 at 2:15 PM

but should the NRSC target Obama rather than Harry Reid?

Yes. The best way to attack any Democrat is to attack Obama, using simple truth and reason.

And I agree that we need a leader and not a target, but we must address the way people think nowadays. They only pay attention to negatives and they only pay attention to the sitting President.

Grafted on March 24, 2009 at 2:16 PM

Great ad. And it’s only the first very small salvo……remember, the Republicans just three weeks ago were afraid of The Messiah and were kissing his _____. Now they are NOT afraid of him and as a matter of fact, see The One as a gift from heaven to save conservatives! So, in the end, Obama is really The Messiah for Republicans after all……………..

Turn the tables on the Dems. They want Rush to be the face of the RNC? Fine. We’ll make Obama the face of the DNCC. Everything he does reflects on the Dems in Congress. We have to instill in the publics mind that when they see the Democrat candidates’ name on the ballot, they see Obamas’ face.

Cut off the serpent’s head.

Obama, the myth, needs explication.

It is MAGNIFICENT that the Senate Republicans have the fortitude to put priorities in order.

Barack Obama is the Democratic Party leader, both nominally and popularly, so any dent in his standing helps the Republicans in Senate races, at least indirectly. –Ed

–at best DIRECTLY.

Reid is not popular. Is Dodd getting rave reviews? No. Their survival is based upon the perpetuation of Obama’s myth. Remove the serpent’s head and the myth of Socialist popularity turns to dust.

When I look at the so-called leaders in the House and in the Senate, all I see is some gutless wonders. They’re good on some issues on some days, but continuity? They should be buying tv time then to get their message out if the news organizations won’t give it to them like they give it to dems.

Scrappy on March 24, 2009 at 2:09 PM

Excellent ideas! I’d like to see the Republicans run some adds asking a few inconvenient questions, along the lines of Captain Kirk asking why God needs a spaceship:

Why shouldn’t we tax Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, and Barack Obama at 90% to recover the huge amount of money THEY took from failed financial institutions?

If Obama places a high priority on resolving the financial crisis, why is there only one person appointed to a position at Treasury 90 days into his administration?

Why is it bad for banks to loan too much money, to people who can’t repay it, but good for the government to borrow trillions of dollars from our children with no intention of repaying it?

If no one is allowed to earn bonuses at AIG, is this also true of other government-run businesses and departments? If not, why not?

When the government hires people to work at AIG, and the other companies it is taking over, does it tell them they might need to return a portion of their earnings at the end of each year, based on public outrage?

Stockholders are entitled to see a business plan from the company’s management. Now that the American people are partners in the auto companies, and majority stockholders in AIG, when do we get to see the business plan to turn them into profitable enterprises?

What made the Obama Administration think it would be a good idea to tax military personnel for their health benefits? What made them decide to withdraw this proposal?

Besides votes on whether or not to form a labor union, what other votes does Barack Obama believe should NOT be conducted in private?

Stockholders in a company insist on assurances that incompetent management will be terminated. Why does the Obama Administration insist on recycling so many obviously incompetent people into positions of power? What part of Jamie Gorelick’s resume did they find attractive?

Using Olby in an NRSC anti-Obama ad….priceless.

29Victor on March 24, 2009 at 3:32 PM

It’s a good ad, but I think it’d be a mistake to read too much into it as far as its impact or what it indicates about the strategy we’ll see. The real decisions won’t be made until it becomes clearer what the possible political narratives will be, namely surrounding the economy.
I think taking a few cheap shots about AIG bonuses is fine. The shots are cheap, so whatever, why not take a cheap bump. What’s important is that it can’t become the focus, using populism as a compliment for serious strategy is one thing, but when a strategy focuses around populism you wind up with a bunch of empty suits.

galenrox on March 24, 2009 at 3:33 PM

I would like to have seen anything at all about the many lobbyist waivers, 5 days for public bill review prior to his sig / 2 days before congress sig.

There are lots of things that could have been in this that aren’t… using contractually agreed bonuses as a chip was a mistake.

I’m a fan of the GOP going ahead and attacking Obama. He’s the top of the ticket. And Obama is carrying out the liberal agenda that stands in stark contrast to conservative principles.

It’s good to point out when he doesn’t keep promises. I’d prefer them to spend more time talking about why the actions he IS taking are wrong and bad for the country.

The Democrat party won by campaining against and demonizing President Bush. The NRSC isn’t lying, they aren’t demonizing Obama, they are pointing out the facts. Nothing wrong, and not a good strategy, unless Obama really plumets in popularity.

Guilt by association doesn’t work well unless people don’t like the politician. I don’t think Republicans should try to demonize Obama.

I think they should go after Dodd, and other beatable Democrats.

Rode Werk on March 25, 2009 at 1:03 AM

Rode Werk

I agree that they should go after Dodd, et al, but disagree about Obama. Of course they should go after him. His defenders are not quite as eager to take bullets for him right now and that leaves him a bit more vulnerable. When you see a weakness in the castle wall, you attack it. If you are good enough, and your attack plan is well-concieved, you will breach that wall. If you never attack, the wall stays up and you continue to stand on the outside while the defenders hurl cattle at you and fart in your general direction.

btw, when the black race-baiters start to turn on Barry (they never liked him anyway—not one of “them”), it’ll be over for the Magic Marxist.

Olby and Chrissy will void themselves on-camera.

Let’s roll.
