The dysfunctional RNC beats the DNC in February fundraising
posted at 12:13 pm on March 24, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
I’ve been critical of new RNC chair Michael Steele for several gaffes since his election, but the real job of the chair is to organize and raise funds. We wondered whether the disarray in the RNC would result in lost ground where it counts, but as Politico reported over the weekend, it turns out that Steele outboxed his counterpart, Tim Kaine. Now it’s Kaine who has to answer questions about competence and performance:
In the wake of the Democratic National Committee’s surprisingly weak February fund raising, Democratic insiders are questioning the unusual arrangement that has Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine serving as a part-time chairman until his term as governor ends next January.
The disappointing results come despite conditions that are ripe for a Democratic Party fund raising windfall: The party faithful are still buzzing from Barack Obama’s November presidential victory, Democrats have large congressional majorities and Obama is riding high in the polls despite a bleak economic picture. On top of that, the party is now in possession of the vaunted 13-million-address e-mail list he used to shatter fundraising records in 2008.
Yet fundraising numbers reported Friday show that in February, Kaine’s first full month as chairman, the Republican National Committee – supposedly plagued by GOP apathy and a chairman who got off to a rocky start, outraised the DNC $5.1 million to $3.3 million.
Though Kaine plans to devote more time to fund raising now that the Virginia legislative session has ended, he won’t be able to completely throw himself into the money chase – or other party business, for that matter – for another eight months.
Is $5.1 million a good number on its own? I’d say yes, for a party that just lost a national election and faces off against a popular (for now) Democratic President. It’s doubly impressive considering the fact that the RNC didn’t have much of a senior staff; Steele canned most of them, and has only now begun replacing them, including the person in charge of fundraising.
Meanwhile, the decision to boost Kaine through a dual role as governor and party chair looks worse and worse. Kaine isn’t exactly known for fiscal responsibility in Virginia, and he appears to bring those same sensibilities to his part-time job. Democrats thought that the power of Obama and their lock on power in DC would keep the pump primed on its own, and they’ve had a rude awakening.
The Round One victory is a good sign for Steele, and an opportunity to catch his breath after a terrible start in his new position. He has backed away from media appearances in the last couple of weeks to focus on organization and staffing. If he has another couple of months like this, no one will remember DL Hughley by the summer.

Is Obama still raising money???
mad saint jack on March 24, 2009 at 12:15 PM
Well,at least on the fundraising aspect,
thats a bit of hope!!!!!!!!!

A promising note.
DL13 on March 24, 2009 at 12:15 PM
wait until after tonight’s show and obama makes it to the next round, then you’ll see the fundraising numbers pick up
gatorboy on March 24, 2009 at 12:16 PM
Madoff must of hit the Democrats hard.
WashJeff on March 24, 2009 at 12:17 PM
After donating record amounts to Obama, I suspect that many Democrats consider themselves to be tapped out.
Additionally, what argument are the Democrats going to use to convince people to give.
1) We need a congress that will support Obama. (got that already)
2) We need to take over the house and senate in order to pass our agenda. (got that one already)
There’s just not a lot of reason for Democrats to be giving at this time.
MarkTheGreat on March 24, 2009 at 12:18 PM
Perhaps people are just that pissed aboutthe bailouts?
Or is it really a testament to Steele’s organizational skills
Hm

Soros bought his puppet government… You don’t throw good money after bad…
phreshone on March 24, 2009 at 12:20 PM
You wait. People will flood money to the RNC if they espouse CONSERVATIVE values.
marklmail on March 24, 2009 at 12:20 PM
The RNC just brought on another big tech guy to help with online and media operations.
amerpundit on March 24, 2009 at 12:20 PM
The DNC doesnt’ need the money right now, they have the power and are kicking our asses.
We, as a party are in disarray and need leadership.
originalpechanga on March 24, 2009 at 12:21 PM
Good news for RNC, but the devils advocate in me says, the DNC is still on highs from the Messiah’s coronation and things will probably return to form down the road. In the end though it really doesn’t matter b/c b/w Obama’s fundraising and the Soros crowd, the RNC has a lot of work to do. For now, I’m still putting my $$ into SarahPAC.
davek70 on March 24, 2009 at 12:21 PM
I’d still like to see him openly address Spector’s maneuvering in PA. Also working on getting more exposure for guys like Cantor, DeMint, Coburn, etc. in addressing Obama’s fiscal policies.
lowandslow on March 24, 2009 at 12:21 PM
So much for the Repubs and conservatives going quietly into the night…
RepubChica on March 24, 2009 at 12:22 PM
If Steele can’t outhustle Kaine, especially with the sheer animosity toward Obamelosireid from us in the base, he deserves to get tossed out on his ear. More work, less talk.
OhioCoastie on March 24, 2009 at 12:25 PM
Has anybody noticed the GIVE Act? This is Obama’s indentured servitude program. They have added an amendment that will disallow any protest to the programs requirement that your children serve the government. It’s amazing frankly. The amendment was added by California Rep. George Miller – Amendment to prohibit organizations from attempting to influence legislation; organize or engage in protests, petitions, boycotts, or strikes; and assist, promote, or deter union organizing. Please check it out for yourself.
govtrack.us is a great site, it has a link to the actual amendment itself. Please review, this is a direct attack on the 1st amendment.

This, so far, looks like a good thing for the RNC
- The Cat
I think Steel’s problem was that he hit the ground running and from watching MythBusters, that’s not the best way to start.
Conservatives need to real acquire the 11th Commandment.
MirCat on March 24, 2009 at 12:30 PM
Is this a measure of Steele’s success, or a measure of people’s concern over Barry O’s policies?
TheUnrepentantGeek on March 24, 2009 at 12:31 PM
Yep that’s why they always donate to their fellow facists the Democrats.

lorien1973 on March 24, 2009 at 12:35 PM
Why isn’t the RNC running ads of Barney Fwank and his show trial of last week? The ad writes itself. Just show 30 second snippets of Frank, and Maxine Waters (talking about Nationalizing the Oil companies). Frustration here! The ads are cheap to make, use that freakin’ money you’re getting and USE it, RNC!!! Show America how the Democrat party is destroying America.
ckdexterhaven on March 24, 2009 at 12:36 PM
Could it be that Steele purposefully made a controversy which brought attention to himself and the RNC? You know the saying, “Any press is good press.” And how could the press NOT want to cover a flap at the RNC?!?!
It might be time to start saying … Steele, you magnificent bas***d. (too soon?)
AeroSpear on March 24, 2009 at 12:37 PM
Good for you Mr. Steele – weather the storm and you get the job done – clean house and rebuild a real innovative and aggressive team.
Get er done !!!

Memo to Tim Kaine: Your party has driven the country into the ditch, the Democrats are tapped out.
Memo to Michael Steele: Keep sending me those letters and postage paid envelopes begging for money and I will keep sending them right back to you, empty, along with my little notes. I will not support the RNC until you pledge no more funds for Spector, Collins and Snow.

Is this another ammendment added in the dark of night? OMG, this is the scariest regime evah.

I got it, but only because I’ve read a lot of your other comments. The “/sarc” is pretty much always necessary on the internet.
OT: I’d never clicked on your blog before. Interesting bit about SquareEnix.
Sir Corky on March 24, 2009 at 12:40 PM
That’s such a simple concept that it never ceases to amaze me how it escapes the attention of the leaders of the Republican party and it’s elected representatives. They want to pander to the fringe elements and gain their approval while ignoring their base.
Oldnuke on March 24, 2009 at 12:41 PM
Good for Steele, but I’m not yet satisfied – and hopefully, he isn’t either.
beatcanvas on March 24, 2009 at 12:42 PM
I’d say it’s precisely because the Democrats won the election and have such a strangle-hold on DC that they aren’t making any money. They don’t need it and the people who are not DC cockroaches understand this.
Republicans making money just makes sense.
But this begs the question, who gives money to these people? Why?
amkun on March 24, 2009 at 12:43 PM
NO protesting?? I just sent my traitor Rep and e-mail protesting this. He actually voted for this.
No way will I allow my grandkids to do this…or my daughter. I guess I will get thrown in the gulag.
becki51758 on March 24, 2009 at 12:46 PM
I just wonder how many of the RNC donors are financial services employees who had been giving to Democrats until last month.

Go Michael go! Now let’s boost Sarah, Mitt and Newt – let’s get the conservatives going……….!
Cinday Blackburn on March 24, 2009 at 12:54 PM
Totally agree. My concern is that they make the mistake of thinking that since they are raising enough money to cover, they can stay on the fence instead of going conservative. And in that case, the dollars will never translate to votes.

That vaunted email list is likely turning into slim pickings: between foreign addressees who made illegal contributions and non-Party types (most of whom likely disappointed in ‘the One’ by now), I doubt half of them are worthwhile.
michaelo on March 24, 2009 at 1:12 PM
Word is Congress is looking to confiscate this RNC “bonus”.
LibTired on March 24, 2009 at 1:15 PM
Just because the DNC numbers are abysmal should not excuse equally pathetic fundraising by Steele.
cadams on March 24, 2009 at 1:15 PM
Obama’s approval rating is dropping steadily, but his negatives are going through the roof. That’s where the money is coming from: when people stopped kinda sorta suspecting what Obama is, to people actually SEEING it in action.
logis on March 24, 2009 at 1:15 PM
He talked about the poll showing Obama at 50-50 and Obama bypassing MSM to reach people a la Leno and 60 Minutes. He asked Rush about the possible connection there. Rush went on with the trends in polls going downward for Obama popularity but he emphasized the Congressional Ballot showing Republicans pulling even and ahead of Dems.
msmveritas on March 24, 2009 at 1:17 PM
For the out party’s national committee to so vastly outraise the majority party’s national committee is pretty impressive. I used to work for a small think tank that tracked campaign finance, and the majority almost always outraises the minority. This is a good sign.
paulzummo on March 24, 2009 at 1:19 PM
The DNC is using tired gasbags like Paul Begala in its fundraising appeals, with shrill nonsense like calling Bobby Jindal a liar.
The RNC has an unparallelled direct mail operation and has for years. The person who ran it from 2000 until 2007 is a good friend of mine. She is now running direct mail for the NRCC and they are raking it in as well. People do not hear about these loyal career political staff people who know what they are doing, but the Republicans have a lot of them.
rockmom on March 24, 2009 at 1:22 PM
New people are not going to understand you at all. Don’t use the sarc/ tag, though, no matter how much Madison Conservative cries about it.
BadgerHawk on March 24, 2009 at 1:51 PM
Now work on closing primaries.
jukin on March 24, 2009 at 2:00 PM
Steele needs to start recruiting candidates and bashing the dems on the economy. Hang AIG and the 90%
tax rateclawback on the Dems. He should ask “Who’s next on the libtard tax parade?”He should be demanding accountability in government. Force the Dems to defend Frank, Dodd, and Rangle.
Republicans lost congress because of some twisted emails. Here we have crimes (tax evasion, prostitution, conflict of intrest etc.) Where’s the outrage?
Iblis on March 24, 2009 at 2:05 PM
If that’s why you think the R’s lost congress, then they have more problems than you think.
lorien1973 on March 24, 2009 at 2:07 PM
I figured everyone would get the “steele calls republicans nazis” thing.
I won’t use that sarc tag though. It’s dumb. It should be apparent. If it’s not. Oh well. Sucks to not get the joke :P
lorien1973 on March 24, 2009 at 2:08 PM
Go Steele!
Less talk, more buck$!
sarahpalinfan99 on March 24, 2009 at 2:24 PM
The country learned that Obama means death for America and collectively sent about as much as a MLB pinch hitter makes in a season to the opposition.
It’s in the Democrats’ best interest that Steele stays in charge at RNC and Democrats would be wise to contribute dollars to the RNC to help keep him there.
Buddahpundit on March 24, 2009 at 3:52 PM
Except for the fact that they gave huge amounts of money within the last six months to get their guy elected, and then saw their portfolios take one to the chops when the market tanked (and let’s not forget that those greedy Wall Streeters were almost certainly disproportionately Democrats)–I would think they’d be feeling the pinch about now. Disappointing, maybe. Surprising? Not necessarily.

If Steele runs off Conservative votes, then it wouldn’t matter if Steele raised a billion dollars would it? The GOP CANNOT win without Conservatives, that’s just a FACT.
